overall personality:
Sam has always been sly and cunning, using his wits to give him the upper hand in most situations. Or, on more than one occasion, land him with more money in his pockets than before. Avaricious and ambitious, once he has a goal in his mind, it is extremely difficult to veer him off said path. Given his tenacity, his can be known to be stubborn and extremely difficult to convince when he's in the wrong. This does make him somewhat difficult to work with and under, but he is known to have a softer and generous side to those he sees himself reflected in, such as poorer students or families and even those with a knack for criminal activity. As such, he will not hesitate to assist when he can, monetarily or otherwise, and has set up a small foundation in order to give back to communities that have helped him before. Despite valuing loyalty himself, Sam is rather quick to turn if something will benefit him, which has proven to anger some people. He is rather lonely due to this and still remains as such.
As for now, he has started writing his memoirs, hoping that it will possibly leave some kind of impact and remind the world that he did, in fact, exist. Being forgotten is one of his biggest fears, which is likely why every time he has attempted to be a part of something bigger, he can't just do the bare minimum and instead gives it his all. This can be both a good and bad thing, since his own history has led him down both very good and very bad paths. For the time being, Sam has chosen to be a bit more mellow and less argumentative, opting to lay low since he fancies Scotland quite a bit.
personal history
origins:
originally from zihuatanejo, mexico, but moved to culiacán, mexico with his uncle at seventeen
relations:
ermila luisa rosales mendez | mother | shoemaker | deceasedpets:
Ermila died while Sam was off at Ilvermorny. Before this, he was essentially a mama's boy and adored his mother. Bringing her up is likely to get a Look that may either escalate or disappear, depending on what is being said. Sam used to visit her grave consistently while still in Mexico.
luis angel de la rocha martinez | father | hotelier | deceased
Technically a stranger to him, Sam only met his father twice, and the second time was to kill the man. Luis never bothered with his son and instead opted to pretend he never existed. He never knew about Sam's magical tendencies.
seville raul rosales mendez | maternal uncle | butcher | living
Seville was the one that raised Sam once his mother was gone He convinced Sam that attending a magic school would benefit the family in the long run and ultimately ended up accidentally alienating him once Ermila was killed during Sam's fifth year. Sam refused to see or speak to him once he graduated.

history:
Born out of an affair, never meeting his father for most of his childhood, Sam spent most of his childhood running around and scamming tourists out of money. His mother tried to instill in him a moral code, but this was always undone by his uncle, who encouraged Sam's natural silver tongue and deft fingers. He grew up in a small mud and aluminum shack in the shanty slums outside Zihuatanejo, and was generally a rather curious child. Learning his mother's trade, Sam made shoes out of leather his uncle skinned off of animals and he would often help sell off their meat. From a young age, Sam began to notice the absolutely income inequality between his own small family and the tourists that came to their city laden in legends and mysteries. He made a personal vow to get his mother out of poverty by any means necessary.
On his tenth birthday, a small eagle appeared to him as he was returning home with groceries and spoke to him, telling him that he possessed magical abilities and could harness them further if he attended a magical school. He rushed home and told his mother and uncle, who both reprimanded him for making up stories and forced him to admit he had been lying. It wasn't until a month later that the eagle appeared at their front door and asked to be let in that they started believing Sam. Once inside, the eagle shed its form and became human. This man, Arnold Thayer, was the one that informed Sam of his status as no-maj-born, of his possible future, and of Ilvermorny. Sam was hesitant to even consider this and his mother urged him to disregard this. Magic was of the devil, she'd said. But his uncle had pushed him and reminded him of how easily things just seemed to find their way into his hands, or how he just seemed to have a way with people. Imagine if he worked on those skills and then some, and he'd come back home a conquering hero, able to bring his mother to the United States and give her something better. Sam accepted and was taken to the United States.
At Ilvermorny, two statues did light up for him, Wampus and Pukwudgie, with Sam eventually choosing Pukwudgie. While at Ilvermorny, he tended to stick to other Mexican students but did manage to learn English. It was in Ilvermorny that Sam began to learn more about the anti-no-maj sentiments that permeated wizarding culture right after the First Wizarding War, and growing more and more uncomfortable at being no-maj-born, he began to claim he was a descendant of another household. Eventually found out, he was bullied relentlessly and ostracized further, forcing him into pouring all his efforts into his academic achievements to get everyone to leave him alone. The only reason he learned so many spells was originally to defend himself, and later on to enact revenge on those that had made his life miserable. Every year he would return home, he would resolve himself to never return again, but somehow would always end up talked into returning by his uncle, who continued to paint a prosperous future in which Sam was always their savior.
During his fifth year, Sam dated a girl named Penelope Rothstein and while everything had been going great and they'd started talks of possibly living in a magical community in the States together, everything fell apart when Sam was notified via letter that his mother had been murdered by his father over a trivial money matter. Sam left midway through his fifth year and attended the funeral, during which he finally met his father. Sam's hatred for the man only grew when he overheard him being thankful that she had died, and with her their affair had never come to light. Sam cut ties with his uncle after inquiring about whether the man was truly his father and if he'd known this the entire time when he'd asked about his parentage. His uncle's hesitance to reply gave him all the information he needed and Sam left for school immediately. Sam returned to Ilvermorny with a new mission: he was going to make the man pay. With one set goal in his mind, Sam's relationship with Penelope deteriorated until he became so constantly angry, he yelled at her and nearly slapped her. To say their relationship ended right then and there would've been an understatement.
With revenge on his mind, Sam excelled in the most useful classes. Defense Against the Dark Arts proved useful to expose him to different types of jinxes and hexes, but potions provided his main escape. Discovering a knack for potions, Sam pushed in this subject until he was an indispensable student to his teacher, constantly being of assistance for more advanced potions and proving an invaluable asset when he began interning with his professor's experimental potions research facility. Upon graduation, he made a conscious effort to never tell anyone about his newfound dream in life, and returned home with a vast array of spells and potions to use on the man.
When he returned, Seville grew wary of seeing his nephew's bloodlust and insisted on leaving the city. Sam agreed, feeling a fresh start would work best, but not before disappearing for two weeks. For two weeks, he kept his father barely alive and conscious as he tested all kinds of different potions on the man, not caring for pain or long-lasting effects. When he'd finally managed to experiment to his satisfaction, Sam left the man for dead in his home, a disgustingly opulent home that had been passed down for generations.
In their new city, Sam was no longer interested in holding any kind of job that entailed no-maj labor and after various fights and arguments, lost communication with his uncle, and instead opting to live with a new friend he had made in the city, also named Samuel, with a connection to the cartels. With magic by his side, evading no-maj dangers came as a breeze and he was quickly recognized as a skilled carnal (low-ranking soldier) and became acquainted with several different families running the area. For various years, Sam put in the work that was expected, amassing a small fortune and making a name for himself until he became a sergeant in the ranks of the Sinaloan cartel. While he entertained several flings throughout his twenties and thirties, Sam opted to remain alone for the most part, as it meant less people to watch out for, and with magic facilitating everything for him, it wasn't long before he had outlived most of the young men he had been recruited with, including Samuel, and was promoted up the ranks until he was in the president's ear. Essentially the right hand man for the Sinaloan Cartel's president, Sam controlled a large portion of the state until he became far too cocky with magic, and was, in short, caught by wizard killers.
In order to escape with his life, he bargained with the group to spare his life in exchange for a power vacuum in Sinaloa, which would allow a new seat of power to come and snatch it up. Miraculously enough, Sam was able to escape with his life, albeit a few broken bones and a snapped wand. Ensuring the president of the cartel was killed and the vacuum went on, leading to a tumultuous few months, Sam was quick to try and hide out in the magical spaces reserved for his kind. But when he heard of his uncle possibly becoming a target because the cartel figured out he'd been the rat, Sam was quick to come up with a plan. Maybe he didn't want to interact with his uncle anymore, but he didn't want his only father figure dead. As such, he ran to the U.S. government and offered up information and possible extraditions if and only if he could be moved away from everything.
Capturing several influential members with the help of U.S. agents as well as lower branches of the MACUSA, Sam was placed under no-maj witness protection and shipped off to Scotland as soon as the Second Wizarding War had all but ended. Having been away from the majority of magical spheres, Sam was all but shocked to hear that the no-maj hatred had continued for so long and opted to keep his bloodline a secret. After all, he was in a new country with no connections, so who would ever know he was lying?
Since 2000, Sam has been keeping with his no-maj cover story of being an author, and has managed to hire a ghostwriter for all these years. Loving their work, he continued to hire them whenever he believed a new book was in order. However, unbeknownst to the U.S. government, old ways are hard to abandon and Sam opted to open a magical business, but seeing as his experiences with legal business ventures were rather limited, one of the only options that appealed to him: a casino. Having had SOME experience helping rig games and fudging books, he thought it would be loads easier to run on legitimately. And while challenging, keeping intelligent people on deck definitely helped in the founding of the Gamblin Galleons Casino.
Most of his time was spent either laying low or working on his casino, as he figured he'd had enough excitement in his lifetime. Even when students from Hogwarts were being kidnapped or attacked, Sam turned a blind eye. However, when he heard of Ilvermorny being attacked, Sam was one of the first to petition the Ministry to do something about it and has started keeping an eye out for shifty characters in his establishment, mostly out of a sense of loyalty to the school that handed him the easy pass in life. When some Ilvermorny students were transferring to Hogwarts, Sam set up several accounts at different stores in Diagon and Horizont Alley, offering to pay for school supplies for students who seemed out of their depth.
During the Hag's Fever quarantine, Sam became even more of a hermit, only leaving his home when absolutely necessary and opting to receive and send everything by owl. Once quarantine was lifted, he finally left his home and made his way back to the casino, starting to work once again, hands on. However, with so many months alone only interacting with one or two people, he did start to lose it ever so slightly.
