The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable Evelyn stacked her books into her school trunk. Typically she would have left this for the day before, but it took her mind off things. It also kept her from staring at the closed door of the other room in the house where Sarah was, and Dakoda used to sleep. The holidays had been very different from the years before. Dragons had attacked the village, she figured the usual Hogsmeade weekend in January would be canceled, plus their family was missing members for Christmas. Her books were stacked in a corner, all facing different directions, but she couldn’t be bothered to fix them. There were inkpots, quills, parchment, and other school supplies she would need during the year. But, just like every year it didn’t take her long to accumulate her stuff.
In times like this, she was jealous of Mina and Callisto. They were able to go and do what they wanted. She wished Mina was at least here, she always had exciting stories she insisted were true, but Ev had a hard time believing they were more than just a story. Still, it was interesting and let them spend time together. The Prophet lay on her bed, the moving images on the front displayed the crazed faces of escaped inmates—all but Sarah. She’d decided to turn herself in or something and was now working for the Ministry. It was a twist and not what she expected of her. Wouldn’t she want to run? Ev stood up and picked up the paper, and tossed it on the end of her bed before laying down on her stomach so she could flip through it. But she hadn’t gotten very far when she heard a knock from the doorway.

January 2025
Even though she had gone into Azkaban trusting that Elaine would be able to get her out and even though she had barely been in prison relative to many of her fellow inmates, it felt incredibly strange to Sarah to be on the "outside" once again. Her hair was back to its natural color at the roots; it had grown out while in prison so that the vibrant blue that had once been her hair color was faded with split ends. She had a wand again; she could probably manage to get it to look decent without much assistance, but she hadn't gotten around to it yet. For the sake of not having much of anywhere to go except the Purifiers' base, Sarah had landed at her parents' for the time being, made all the more awkward by the fact that Evelyn, her youngest sister, was home from Hogwarts for the winter holidays. Sarah had kept her distance from her, mostly because she knew that it must have been strange for her. While Mina and Callisto were old enough that they had clear opinions on everything that had happened, Evelyn was young enough that she was sort of a wildcard. She was young enough to be impressionable still, but she wasn't so young that she didn't have a clue what was happening. With Sebastian, it didn't really matter as much, since he was too young to comprehend it all to begin with, but Evelyn? She, too, had lost her brother because of her own sister's actions. There was a silver lining to that, however: Evelyn had her back, and she could control how she presented the situation. If she heard the story straight from her mouth, Sarah thought, then maybe she would be more inclined to believe her. That didn't mean that she had to tell Evelyn the truth, of course; she just had to keep everything straight. Not finding Evelyn elsewhere, Sarah went over to her bedroom and knocked on the door. She didn't hear a response from her at first, so she spoke through the door instead of knocking again. "Hey, Ev?"evelyn rhea oliveira

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable She’d always been taught about the importance of family, and they’d existed as a unit of very different personalities. Dakoda had always made time for her, and now that she was a bit older, she could understand why her sisters might not during their teen years. Still, Sarah had hardly tried to speak to her much since coming home, and Ev didn’t mind—she didn’t know what to think about it all. When she thought of Dakoda, she felt her breath catch in her throat, and her eyes begin to well up, but as always—she shoved it down. Some days it didn’t seem real, and she’d go about her routine until something reminded her of him, and then she’d remember.
Evelyn glanced up at the closed door when she heard a knock—if it was her mother, she’d have probably just walked in. Which meant it was one of her sisters, and she didn’t really feel like talking to any of them today. But the door didn’t open, and instead, she heard a voice, Sarah’s voice. Evelyn let out a frustrated sigh through her nose, an annoyed look on her face as she put the Prophet back down on the bed. Her initial reaction was to ignore it, but Sarah had pretty much left her alone her entire time home so far, so there was a curiosity about what she wanted. ”What?” Evelyn responded, voice slightly raised to make sure she could be heard through the closed door.

January 2025 "What?"
Sarah wasn't surprised that Evelyn's response came through the door even once she had spoken. She would have been more shocked had Evelyn come and answered the door, though she knew that it was partially because Evelyn was a teenager and partially because she didn't really have a reason to get up and answer the door if she didn't want to.
"Have you—" Sarah started, Evelyn's door still shut in front of her. She cleared her throat a little and cracked the door open just barely—and just in order to keep from raising her voice too much. Making a good impression on Evelyn meant not yelling at her unnecessarily, Sarah felt. "Have you got a winter cloak I can borrow?" she asked, knowing that she had been audible for sure that time. "I'm not sure where my winter"—Sarah stopped herself from cursing—"stuff went, and Mum hasn't had time to help me with that…"

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable Evy rolled onto her back, again letting out another sigh. Even such a simple request like she’d been asked to move a mountain, and really she could hardly muster up the energy to move off her bed. She heard the door crack open, and Sarah’s voice was much clearer, but she focused her gaze on the ceiling. Any energy she’d had begun to well up in her chest, Sarah’s presence was just a reminder of what’d she lost.
It took a moment, but Evy closed her eyes and took a breath before rolling back over onto her stomach. Her grey eyes were cold and tired, but it had been a number of years (at least she felt) since Sarah had looked at her for more than a few minutes. ”In the closet.” Evy spoke evenly, picking up the paper once again. Whether or not their mum was too busy was a toss-up on whether she was actually busy or she was just saying she was. Her eyes moved back down to the Prophet in front of her, and she spoke again though she kept her gaze on the paper. ”I think your stuff is next to Dakoda’s in the other room.”

January 2025 "In the closet," rang Evelyn's voice, again without Sarah's actually seeing her youngest sister. She still hadn't actually come to answer the door, Sarah noted, though she didn't expect much. Just as she was about to turn and make her way to the closet for the cloak, she heard Evelyn add, "I think your stuff is next to Dakoda's in the other room."
Merlin, thought Sarah to herself, wondering if that was done out of convenience or as a deliberate signal that she, too, was dead to the rest of her family after going to prison. "Thanks," she called back in Evelyn's direction nevertheless, going into the other room to see what she could find.
It looked something like a shrine to Dakoda in there, his belongings neatly arranged as though he'd be walking through the doorway at any given minute. Sarah noticed that her belongings, on the other hand, were mostly in boxes—or so she guessed from the labels written on them. Without thinking much about how much of the room screamed her late brother's presence, she went ahead and tore open the nearest box of hers.
"Ev?!" Sarah hollered, looking down at the contents of the box and out in the direction from which she'd come. She had been expecting Christmas morning, but all she'd gotten out of that was a box of what had been in her kitchen—plates and mugs and all manner of things that she hadn't touched in ages. "Do you know which one's the winter clothes?" she continued, looking around the room as she spoke for any indication of something other than housewares.

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable Hearing her brother’s name come out of her mouth tugged at her heart, but she shoved the feeling down. That’s how she was dealing with all of this, for now, just shoving it down because Evy had no idea what to do with this feeling of loss. She could still remember the confusion shock she had felt when she found out about Sarah’s involvement. First the kick to the chest that he was dead and then knowing that your own sister did it? Well, it was a lot, and honestly, Evy had gone numb for some time after. Sarah responded with a ‘Thanks’ and she could faintly hear the footsteps of her sister retreating from her door. Finally, some peace.
Or not. When she heard her name again, Evelyn let out a frustrated sigh and paused. Maybe if she just didn’t answer, Sarah would leave her alone? It had seemed to work so far for the entirety of her winter break, but today just didn’t seem to be the case. Finally, she stood up, leaving the open paper on her bed, and she opened her door with the energy of someone who clearly didn’t want to be there. She walked over to the room, ready to snap at her sister but paused at seeing her brother’s things. But, her eyes only lingered for an extra second. ”The one in the back.” She pointed out. ”It says winter clothes.” Evy crossed her arms, annoyed that she’d had to walk over.

January 2025 Rather than hearing a verbal response, Sarah could hear her sister's footsteps. She turned her head as Evelyn entered the room and saw that she looked hardly thrilled to have been asked another question about where her belongings had gone. It was either that or having her cloak borrowed, Sarah thought, and she assumed that Evelyn probably preferred not to loan her a cloak if she could avoid it.
"The one in the back," Evelyn stated, and it was only at that moment that Sarah caught sight of the relevant box. As Evelyn explained to her, her arms crossed in frustration, it was labeled as containing winter clothes—and it made Sarah look (and feel, admittedly) stupid for not having seen it.
"Brilliant," Sarah replied, not overly enthused but still glad to have found what she was looking for. "Thank you," she added, already moving towards where the box was. It took her a minute or two to free it, and it took her another minute to open up the box. The task would have been a lot easier if she could have just summoned what she wanted, but she wasn't sure if her cloak had made it into that box.
Digging through the clothes in the box, Sarah was annoyed by how much there seemed to be to sort through. Some of the garments in there were definitely from Hogwarts uniforms past. At long last, she managed to grab one of her more recent cloaks and heaved it from the box. Without looking back towards Evelyn, Sarah paused and straightened out the cloak. "Ev, can you tell me if this looks alright?"

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable Evy watched, almost a bit pitifully, as Sarah fumbled through the boxes. Maybe she’d forgotten how to use magic with her short stint in Azkaban. But also Evy didn’t know how the boxes were organized. Her mom had packed them but made Evy put them in the room. She almost turned to go back to her room and find a way to keep busy until Sarah left her alone, but she wasn’t sure if she would just get another very random question. Finally, Sarah seemed to find what she was looking for, but Evy still leaned against the door frame with her arms crossed rather defensively.
And then came the next random question. Evelyn was glad she’d just stayed put. ”It looks fine.” Honestly, she didn’t really look. But she just felt annoyed having to answer. ”What’s with all the random questions?” She finally asked, her grey eyes looked coldly at her. Really, what she’d wanted to ask was why she was here? How could she walk into their brother’s room so easily? At the thought, Evy shook her head as she pushed the feelings down again.

January 2025 Evelyn hovered in the doorway, arms crossed as she leaned against the doorframe. She didn't leave, though, even though she easily could have turned around and gone back to her own bedroom. Instead of leaving, she gave her a response about how the cloak looked, simply saying that it looked fine. "What's with all the random questions?"
Sarah turned her head to look at Evelyn then and saw the intensity with which she was looking at her. "What?" she asked, wondering why Evelyn was suddenly so suspicious of her. She had only wanted her sister's opinion. "I just wanted to know if this looks nice or if I should wear something else…"
She adjusted the cloak a little bit more and looked down at it to check that it looked okay. Really, she wasn't sure she had worn it since she had gotten pregnant with Sebastian. The cloak was a little too warm to wear inside the house, however, and Sarah took it off again and draped it over her arm. It would do, and it wasn't as though she had the money or the time to get it altered by a professional at that second.

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable The snapping at people was hardly a new behavior for Evelyn, but it was now a more frequent one. With her mood typically low and she wanted to be left alone. Sarah, of all people, was asking her questions was pushing all the buttons today. Sarah turned when she asked, stopping what she was doing entirely. Evy sighed in frustration. ”You know…I just don’t—“ Again, she recrossed her arms and shifted her weight to her other legit. ”How are you so normal right now?”
It was honestly a bit infuriating now that she lingered on the thought longer. They were standing in Dakoda’s room for Merlin’s sake, and as Evy avoided eye contact, knowing that she may very well cry if she thought about it too long, her gaze lingered on Dakoda’s old broomstick in the corner. He had taught her how to play Quidditch when she was eight years old, and he was already finished at Hogwarts. Mina had been close to him as well, but Evelyn didn’t have the luxury of moving out at sixteen and halfway through her fifth year at school. ”It looks fine.” Evy added. Still in disbelief at how normal this conversation was.

January 2025 "You know…" began Evelyn, "I just don't—" Sarah didn't get to hear what she "just didn't", though, until Evelyn rephrased what she was trying to say. "How are you so normal right now?" she demanded to know.
"Ev," Sarah sighed heavily. She didn't know what she was supposed to say, whether to her sister or in general. Prison was prison. Though she had known that she would be getting out of Azkaban, Elaine had had no influence on how she had been treated on the inside. It wasn't exactly a walk in the park.
"It looks fine."
Sarah nodded instead of saying anything else at first, but she ran her free hand through her hair. None of this was easy for her, either, but Merlin, if she wasn't glad to be permitted the use of a wand again. She hated feeling like she was back to being a teenager because she was back living with her parents, and she knew it had to be weird for the teenager who had been living under their parents' roof.
"You can, erm… go back to reading Witch Weekly or whatever you were doing," Sarah added somewhat dismissively, though she did want to give her sister an out. She didn't really know what Evelyn did for fun, truthfully, though she seemed to have kept her head on straight, unlike her or Mina. That said, she doubted that Evelyn was keen to have friends over anytime soon, not with her sister fresh out of prison and Azkaban all over the news. "It's fine."

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable Ever since her parents had sat her down and told her the news, Evy had felt like she was in a daze. Reading helped, and she’d managed some writing, but her heart wasn’t in it. In a way, it still didn’t feel real, like he would just pop through the door at any minute—maybe he’d bring Ophelia with him. She was always kind to Evelyn. Evy looked at her sister. In the right light, her own gray eyes appeared green, and so did Sarah’s. A chill ran up her spine as she recalled the loud argument she’d heard just after their gloomy Christmas. Callisto hadn’t wanted to tell Evy, and Mina thought otherwise. In the end, they hadn’t told her, but she’d heard everything regardless.
Years of sitting in a shadowy corner of the stairs and listening through the railing had taught her how to listen since her age gap often left her in the dark. Sarah excused her, not that she needed permission, and that made Evy feel like not moving after all—why did she have to listen to Sarah anymore? Anger welled up in her chest, and she looked away, crossing her arms tighter. ”The Prophet…” Evy muttered. ”I was reading The Prophet.” Evy correctly her sharply, and then she let out a frustrated sigh. She wanted to ask why she was here? Why had she done it? Why had her oldest sister gotten their older brother out of the way? Just why? But as she stared at the part of the room her mother kept perfectly neat for Dakoda, she just looked down at the floor. ”I just miss him.” Swallowing through a lump in her throat, she kept staring at the floor. She should probably just go back to her room now.

January 2025 Evelyn remained stubborn, saying that it had been the Daily Prophet that she had been reading. The newspaper had more credibility than a witches' magazine did, perhaps, but Sarah realized that she had put her foot in it without trying. That was obviously Evelyn's way of pointing out that she was more grown-up than she was giving her credit for, even if she was the baby of the family apart from Sebastian. It was becoming clearer that her stint in prison had taken more of a toll on Evelyn than she had expected, though Sarah didn't really feel sympathy for her. She had done what she had done for a good reason, not that the rest of the world seemed to see it that way.
Now that she was back on the outside with an agreement to work on catching some of the other people who had been imprisoned alongside her, though, she would take that sympathy card and play it.
"I just miss him," Evelyn said aloud, obviously referring to Dakoda without mentioning him by name. It had to have been hard, but Sarah also had to wonder what Evelyn would have thought of Dakoda if he had turned her in like he was going to. How would she have felt to know that one of her siblings had put the other behind bars? That was worse than death in some ways, wasn't it? It would have divided the family more, probably.
Sarah watched Evelyn for a second, allowing herself to relax a little. She had to build up what she was going to say in a way that wouldn't contradict anything that she had said before. Having her teenage sister raise alarm bells wasn't the best way to start off the new year or her newfound freedom. Remaining quiet, she reached out her free hand to Evelyn if she wanted to take it. Though she hated what she'd done for the position that it had put her in with Evelyn in that moment, she hadn't spent her time in prison in remorse. Evelyn didn't need to know that, though, and Sarah put herself in that mindset.
"I knew I came here too soon," she began, her attempt at making herself sound as though she still carried more regrets with her than she did. Her childhood home wasn't really hers anymore anyway, Sarah knew, looking between her sister and the floor. "I–I don't want to hurt you, Ev. I'll go back to my room. Mum can help me later, and you'll be back at Hogwarts before the next full moon anyway, so…"

The pressure of this life is so You can't be held accountable Sometimes Evy hated the age between her and the rest of her siblings. It made her feel distant, and she could see in old pictures how she’d follow Dakoda, Sarah, or Callisto around while they were home from school. Maybe it's why she had grown so close to Luna as her best friend. Someone her own age to talk to and vent or help process things. Who could she talk to in this family, really? Evy felt it more at that moment as she still felt the pain in her chest. Merlin, she wanted to ask Sarah—was what Mina said true? Why didn’t Callisto want to tell her? She hated that her older siblings still saw her as some ten-year-old girl.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Sarah move, and Evy looked at her and then down to her hand but hadn’t entirely processed it before Sarah spoke again. The tone in her sister’s voice brought Evy back to reality, and she uncrossed her arms. ”You’re not going to leave again, are you?” She found herself asking, her eyes a bit wide and watery. Like the anger that her sister had killed her brother was temporarily set aside by the internal panic at the thought of not seeing Sarah again. Sebastian already lived with them, and nothing else had tied Sarah back here before. The conflicting feelings weighed heavier together. The question was at the tip of her tongue, but she couldn’t bring herself to ask it. But really, in that very second, she was just wondering if she’d come home to just her nephew and parents when she came home for the summer.
