WITH THE LOCK PICKED AND THE LESSON learned, Nate was confronted with the prospect of an empty room with just he and Evy inside of it. The anticipation was thick, a heady feeling that tightening his skin and stiffened his posture. Arm around her waist as he ushered her inside impatiently, regretting all at once the fact that he wasn't the one in front anymore. Evy had been the one to unlock the door, with just a couple of hair grips and minimal assistance - that was hot.
"Cold out here, nah?" He replied thickly, aware of Evy's teasing. She'd always been aware of how her taunting affected him, stringing him along as long as she had, there was no denying it. They had toed the line for months, edging towards a precipice, but it was always Evy that pulled away at the last second. Giving a little rope, and then pulling all of it back just as quickly. Nate should have known such a scenario was possible, but he was always just eager enough to be left hanging.
Her hand catching his as she giggled at the sudden intrusion, and he was reminded viciously once again that she was ticklish. He grabbed it momentarily, lacing their fingers together as she walked into the classroom, but it was Evy who let him go. His hand falling loosely at his side as he kicked the door shut behind him with a hard thud. She turned and Nate watched her, his jaw flexing as he ground his teeth and refrained from going to her - from showing her exactly what he wanted to do in an empty classroom unsupervised. Her eyes were two gleaming orbs flickering all over his face, lit by the meagre lighting through the two glass panels situated at the very top of the door. The light weak and intimate. He looked down his nose at her.
"I can show you," He replied lowly, his hand coming up to wrap cleanly around her wrist where she played with his tie, he tugged on it gently, urging her towards him. And then she spoke, her eyes pinned to where his knuckles were exposed while wrapped around her hand. He let go as if her skin burned, taking a calculated step backwards. She sounded concerned, almost sympathetic, it burst their bubble all at once. He felt doused in cold water, reminded sharply of Claudia and classrooms and Simon-fucking-Svendsen.
He turned his back, as if he were going to simply walk out without another word. But, he paused, unable to complete the intention. Nate's bruised, scabbed hand came up and he swiped it across his mouth in absent irritation. "D'you think I came in here to talk about my fucking hands, Evy?" He asked, turning back with a cruel laugh. "What do you think happened?" He asked her, head tilted, hands hanging limp at his sides - like a broken doll. "I think it's pretty fucking obvious."

So let's get covered in flames and play some games with the smoke A split second. That's all it ever took, didn't it? An empty classroom, just the two of them and Evy wondered how patient Nate was if she'd decided to reward him just yet. Evy liked how his hand felt on her waist and his gentle guidance closer toward him, though she'd taken care of much of that physical gap. It was no secret that Nathaniel Forrester was goal-driven. The chances he’d continue to play a game that wasn’t chess past that point was slim. Being able to control his attention was something that made her heart beat a little faster—even if pulling away was something that took more willpower than she cared to admit at times.
Luna had already rolled her eyes at Evy and threatened to douse her in cold water the next time she caught her staring at the brooding seventh year as he played chess in the corner of the Common Room. Their act was as delicate as the act of lockpicking itself. Requiring finesse and patience—it made it all the more worthwhile. The momentary distance between them had allowed Evy to recover from how Nate had hovered over her while she’d taken her try at the lock, the way his face settled so close to hers and his breath lingered her neck and ear. While Evy had control of the situation at large, it didn’t stop Nate from pushing almost every. Single. Button.
But Evy took a chance. Was it a way to stop him in his tracks? Yes. But, she’d heard the concern in her own voice she had asked him about his hands. It wasn’t so much that Evy wanted to know, but she heard the rumors. There was nothing like growing accustomed to having someone in one’s corner only to turn around, and they weren’t there anymore. The thought reminded Evy of her own fractured life and family and the feelings that came with it. Nate recoiled from her and pulled his hand out of hers, the annoyance and frustration clear in his voice as he turned back around. It wasn’t the first time he’d ever snapped at her, but that didn’t mean it ever sat easy with her. And she had tensed at the thought that he might just walk away without a word.
Evy paused, her eyes scanning him. This was the side that rarely came out, that look in his eyes—it wasn’t that hunter’s look anymore. ”I heard.” She replied quietly, arms crossing for lack of knowing what else to do with them for the moment. She paused, noting the annoyance building within her. ”Stop being an ass—I was just going to ask if you were alright.” She followed up, less quietly. Evy scoffed lightly as she shook her head, looking away for a moment, wondering why she even bothered. She should have known better. Maybe he was angry at her for bringing it up or distracting him on their path to finally closing that gap, but Evy had thought about what her own reaction might have been in his shoes.
She took a few steps closer to him, her gaze finally returning forward. When she stopped, her arms fell to her sides. A part of her was mad at herself for bringing it up, if only because he could just walk away and ignore her. ”If you didn’t want anyone to ask, you should’ve healed them.” She added, stating the obvious—now that he’d brought it up. As if by habit, she looked up at him, a bit of a challenge in her eyes. She was annoyed for asking and taking a sharp right turn in this conversation, though she was a bit more annoyed at his response. ”Why did you come in here, then?”

IT WAS A REPRIEVE, MESSING AROUND WITH A standard lock and flirting with Evy. Taking Nate's mind off of the mess that had consumed his personal life. Evy was separate, Evy was his. Like a toy mouse to a cat. They took turns batting each other around, with very few consequences. He had been quite content to simply play that game, maybe fool around until she inevitability pulled away to tease. Unfortunately, there just something a little too intimate about the dark. Nate flexing his fingers reflexively, enjoying the naked ache as the healing skin stretched.
"Heard what?" He replied coldly, nostrils flaring as he squared his jaw. Nate would not add weight to the circulating rumours, not with Evy, not with anybody. "I'd hardly ask you for help if I wasn't." He snapped meanly, knowing it was uncalled for before he'd even said it. "We're not exactly friends, are we?" No, because Nate couldn't keep a friend long enough. Plus, it had always been just a little too tense for friendship between Nate and Evy. They couldn't sit in quiet together, not without Nate's thoughts creeping elsewhere; to touching and teasing.
Using his sharp tongue to push her away, Nate did not expect Evy to close the space between them. His body tensing as her arms uncrossed. He wondered, briefly, if she was going to hit him. He'd have preferred that really, rather than her laser focus. "Maybe I like them they way they are," He shrugged, fingers curling and uncurling over and over. He tried to ignore the way it hurt, the way he felt the scabs splitting. "Maybe I didn't expect anybody to pay attention," He added, his voice dropped an octave.
And then she stopped, her steps halting and her eyes flashing in challenge. It was Nate's turn. He took a deliberate step forward, like a choreographed dance. "You're not stupid," He told her with a tut, a slight curl to the corners of his mouth as he took another forward. This time his arm came up and his hand found the side of her neck, rough, scabbed knuckles catching on the underside of her jaw as he unfurled his fingers against her neck, catching on the fine hair that fell near her ear. He watched his thumb settle on the soft crease near the corner of her mouth, let it press gently. Lifting his gaze to catch on her own, his mouth falling open as he took a breath. He didn't kiss her just yet, almost daring her to pull away.

So let's get covered in flames and play some games with the smoke It was captivating—addicting even to have such a routine. It seemed like harmless fun, the flirting and the cat and mouse game they played. Teasing until you had their undivided attention. Evy couldn’t quite remember how it all started, but she only ever remembered what it felt like. And she also remembered and liked the sense of control she had. Overall that time, however, it wasn’t as though she hadn’t gotten to know Nate a little bit. It was hardly the same level of friendship she had with others or Luna, even. But when she’d asked about his hands, shad had asked genuinely and not as some sort of distraction.
The shift in Nate’s demeanor and stance was evident. The boy that whispered suggestive things in her ear while standing much too close wasn’t standing in front of her anymore. Evy felt defensive as she sat on the regret of trying to be nice. ”Forget it.” She simply replied dismissively. She didn’t need to say it. Everybody in Slytherin knew, and one just had to listen to the loudest whisper in the Common Room. That regret only grew as his responses grew icier and more pointed. Evy’s jaw clenched as she shook her head slightly with a light scoff. As the anger began to creep up, she wondered what was, in fact, so alluring about someone who could sting with so few words.
And it was no wonder Evelyn let very few people so close to her. Whether one was completely alone or surrounded by a family—it was easy to be alone with not many people to rely on. At that moment, she would have liked to walk past Nate, charming the door to lock behind her and letting him pick his way through that lock. But after she’d asked him the obvious question about his hands, he responded in his typical nonchalant way. But Evy was taken slightly aback—it was hard not to notice someone’s hands damaged that way his were—especially when a short trip to the hospital wing would have fixed it right up. And Evy wondered if she had been the only one to pay enough attention to such a detail. ”I noticed.” Evy muttered. ”I noticed in the Common Room.”
It was Nate’s turn to take a step forward. Evy didn’t move. Someone like Nate didn’t need their ego fed knowing that they had ‘won’ in any way just because Evy felt like walking away. It had been fun until it wasn’t. But—then that familiar feeling of that slight chill going up her spine as his knuckles lightly went across her skin, they felt rough from their condition. She didn’t dare look away. She didn’t want to. Nate was right. She wasn’t stupid—none of this was a surprise to her. Just another version of their little game. The sting of his previous words almost felt like a faint memory now, but she took a small step forward to test him. ”Maybe I just want to hear you say it.” She spoke in a low tone. ”What do you want, Nate?”

IT WAS LIKE WHIPLASH, THE WAY THE TENSION shifted from weaponised to electric. How one moment Nate was prepared to storm off, and the next he felt steeled to pin Evy in place. He could not decide if he hated her, or wanted to consume her. The delicate way she had whispered 'I did' in response to his wounds. How it caught like fire in peripheral and froze him in place for a moment, before he began to close the space between them once more.
Evy did not retreat, but Nate hadn't expected her to. He hadn't wanted her to. It wasn't a pursuit, and Evy wasn't a lock to be picked. She looked at him with an open, challenging expression. It was the same thrilling draw, with a different outcome. Except, it wasn't as weightless as some of Nate's other hook ups. Evy knew him a bit better, or tried to, as much as he attempted to slip out of sight. She was as competitive as he was, it was a dangerous game they were playing.
Nate still pressed his fingers into her neck, his knuckles throbbing just a little bit. In time with her thrumming pulse. She whispered into the charged air, a final taunt that Nate wouldn't shy away from. He didn't say it, though. Wouldn't give her the grim satisfaction of knowing - out loud - exactly what he wanted in that moment. Instead, his thumb pulled down at the delicate skin around her full mouth. Nate leaned in quickly, closing that last shred of space between them as he looped his free arm around her slim waist and captured her mouth in his. Absently, he found himself thinking with a sharp inhale and gnashing teeth - finally.

So let's get covered in flames and play some games with the smoke Evelyn never considered herself to have a particularly formidable personality. Standing next to her older sister Callisto she was a mere child to her energy. Even Mina had a bigger personality in her own way. Maybe Evy was more like Sarah, staying quiet until she felt the need to remark—watching instead. But, this was different. The arrogant way Nate would act or present himself wasn’t typically what drew people in, not even Evy, but something about being near him kept her there. The simple ways they taunted and teased and pushed limits to test who would break first. The mere idea left Evy forgetting to breathe.
Even Mina might tell Evy to watch herself and be wary, but they weren’t here. Not that they ever paid attention. Nate didn’t speak, his hand didn’t move, and she waited for him. It would be a surprise for him to submit to her request—it wasn’t his style. She fought the urge to turn her head as his hand moved across her skin. It was warm. Merlin, what was this cursed effect he had on her? But he still did not speak. Instead, he moved forward, and she let him. Her arms went up around his neck as she kissed him back. All this build-up and how she quickly alternated from resisting the urge to kiss him in the hallway to slapping him moments later.
But after Evy let herself have a few moments where she pushed herself against him, she pulled back just slightly. Her hands moved down to lay flat on his chest, and they slowly moved further down, fingertips trailing down his abdomen. Unfortunately, there was the need to breathe. She breathed heavily, her face felt warm, and Evy felt his breath on her face, but she let her fingers stop before continuing downward. Evy leaned in as if to kiss him but stopped. Though she was tempted, very tempted that part of her knew that if she let Nate have his way and win this game—he’d likely never bother to talk to her again.
She didn’t like to be alone. Evy kissed him but forced herself to pull back again though still barely away from his face. Recalling his earlier words, she spoke. ”Shame, isn’t it?” Her breathing was still ragged. ”This could have been fun.” Now, she pulled back further to meet his eyes. Evy could see it, he was focused, and that usual solemn and intense glint replaced with something more primal. ”But we’re not exactly friends, are we?” Evelyn quoted. To say that she hadn’t seriously considered ignoring their earlier argument would have been a lie. After she spoke, Evy took another step back. This game wasn’t over, far from it. And besides, she was late for Charms. Giving him a bit of smirk, she walked past him.
