Selene wasn't much of a rule breaker. She broke a few minor rules at times but nothing too serious. She knew that between Luna being a bit of a control freak and Phoebe's sleepwalking the triplets had to be careful that people didn't start to think that any of them used Phoebe's condition as excuse to sneak out. Least of all Luna because her sister would have her head if she cost Slytherin a lot of points. So today she'd sneaked into the kitchen long before curfew to start on a batch of cookies. She had expected to be the only one, but the house elves didn't mind too much as long as those that stopped by were nice. Selene liked baking every once in a while so it was good she had the option to sneak into the kitchen to... actively do something. She knew people of people came in with the purpose of taking food and leaving but well, a few people enjoyed baking itself. She was one of them. She hummed softly as she started to gather some of the things she needed, helped without having asked for it by the house elves. She thanked them and was nice and polite to them of course. Never be rude to somebody that prepares you dinner! A few minutes at most after she arrived and had just put on an apron another person entered the kitchen. She recognised him as a hufflepuff one year above her. Usually walked around with a big camera around his neck. She knew him more because he was friends with their newly appointed quidditch captain rather than anything else. She smiled at him. "Raphael? I think? You're friends with Addy, right?" She asked kindly, wondering what he'd shown up for. "I'd offer you a cookie but I'm afraid I've barely gotten started on them." Raphael Caelan McLaggen

Early February 2026 Rafe couldn’t sleep. He lay stock-still, afraid his tossing and turning would wake the rest of his dorm mates, but his mind was going a hundred kilometers an hour. There was just too much to think about these days. His professors were starting to become quite nervous as they moved closer to the NEWTs, and as a result had begun to assign extraordinary amounts of homework and got snappy whenever someone gave a wrong answer in class. Jimmie had also been on-edge lately, although Rafe figured that was more about making the school paper a success than about exams. Still, she was more crabby than usual, which was saying something, and that meant Rafe appropriately cowered in fear and didn’t contradict anything she said. And then there was the Hufflepuff team’s campaign to get more time on the Pitch – the only way they stood a chance at not ending up bottom of the rankings – which was made all the more awkward that it was only happening because Addy had finally gotten her dream badge (not that he even wanted to open that can of worms). After what felt like ages, he gave up on sleep and silently slouched out of bed. He sat in one of the plush armchairs that lay scattered around the common room, but found he was too jittery to stay seated for long. He spent a few minutes idly studying one of the Flitterblooms that grew in the common room, watching the bush sway softly in the moonlight, before deciding that a midnight snack would be just the thing before heading back to bed. One of the perks of Hufflepuff House was that the kitchens were practically next-door and therefore provided easy access for the hungry Hufflepuff. Raphael liked to make himself comfortable in a corner and watch the house-elfs work, occasionally snapping a picture or hesitantly piping up to get a snack. That sounded nice, even if it was a technical violation of curfew at this point. And he didn't have his camera with him. Well, stranger things have happened, right? Poking his head out the door to ensure the corridor was empty, Rafe slunk out and quietly made his way to the kitchens. He didn’t expect much activity this time of night, since the house-elfs would have already finished cleaning up after dinner. They’d more likely be out lighting the castle fires. So the presence of another being – another human being – startled him into stopping short and staring. He recognized her, sort-of. Everybody who played Quidditch was familiar with the other players, and naturally Rafe knew the members of the Slytherin team better than most. But they had a set of triplets and he’d never been able to tell them apart (until they began to speak, at least). He gave a sheepish laugh as he stuffed his hands into his pockets at the sound of his real name – he spent so much time with Addy and Brígh that sometimes he forgot his name wasn’t Cheese. “Yup, that’s me. Addy’s friend,” he said with a nod, trying not to sound disappointed or frustrated or worst of all, weepy. That was the reality of the situation, after all. “Erm, and you’re…Selene? Or Phoebe? Definitely not Luna, I don’t think she’s ever smiled at me before.” He gave a weak chuckle at his own (kind-of true) joke. @selene

Some things were natural and easy to Selene while others were ever so challenging. People were not all too difficult as treating them kindly often was enough to elicit at least a decent response (unless one was dealing with Luna it seemed). She measured some of the ingredients for her cookies into a large bowl as Raphael agreed he was Addy's friend. For a moment she thought to caught a hint of something in his voice, but since she didn't know and couldn't place it too easily she mostly opted to ignore it. No doubt Luna would have instantly exploited it, as she often did. She was without a doubt the most Slytherin in personality of the triplets and it showed. He then played the usual guessing game and Selene found herself smiling ever so slightly at the mention of her sisters. "The first." She said as she motioned to a chair near her. "You can sit down if you want to. I promise I don't bite." She said jokingly as she grabbed a few eggs. She then mused for a moment as she cracked the egg into the bowl. "I suppose we're hard to tell apart for most, at least until we open our mouths. Luna gives offense easily, almost as if for sports. Phoebe is more likely to get so caught up in her enthusiasm that she overwhelms people. I suppose I stand out from them more for what I am not compared to them than the traits of my own." Selene suggested out loud, although still smiling. She really did not mind, as there was no harm in being known far more by deducting she was not her sisters than by being recognised as herself. In the end it all had the same effect after all, she was identified as herself. She started mixing the batter and looked at Raphael curiously for a moment. "Just wondering... why did you introduce yourself as Addy's friend rather than Raphael or that nickname people use a lot? Cheese, right? Why would you opt to introduce yourself as a subset of somebody else rather than your own person?" It wasn't meant to give offense, but she seriously wondered. She didn't usually introduce herself as a certain triplet or 'not Luna' as she found herself to be the most defining part of who she was. While her sisters were definitively very important to her she didn't usually see herself as not-them as much as just herself. She then smiled. "You don't have to answer. You're right about Luna though, she doesn't smile a lot. It gives her away." Raphael Caelan McLaggen

The first words out of his mouth were, unsurprisingly, not particularly tactful. But Rafe assumed that Selene must hear it all the time, because she didn’t react badly to him guessing which triplet she was. In a very not-Slytherin move, she didn’t turn defensive or snarky or aggressive. Not like he thought Luna might – they’d never spoken much, and really only about Quidditch – but she always had some clever little comment to make. The kind that got him all flustered as he tried to compose an intelligent response, but which inevitably ended with him wishing he had Addy or Brígh’s ability to murder someone via argument. No, Selene only smiled and invited him to sit, which Raphael did uncertainly as he watched her crack eggs into a bowl.
“I didn’t mean to suggest that,” he rushed to say as she mused that most people could only guess which triplet she was based on process of elimination. “Sorry. I only meant that it’s easy to mix siblings up. I used to have professors accidentally call me by my brother’s name all the time, even years after he graduated.” Rafe shrugged slightly as he admitted it, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. It didn’t particularly bother him, because he knew that he and Mickey both had something of their dad in their faces and builds, but he knew some people were sensitive to it. Like accidentally saying Claire instead of Addy – any poor soul unfortunate enough to make that mistake would definitely not make it through the night. Anyway, there were probably worse things in life than being compared to his perfect older brother, at least according to their dad's estimation of his children. Probably.
If there was anything he was expecting from Selene, her next words made his mouth drop open in shock and he blinked at her blunt honesty. “Um…” He honestly hadn’t thought about it. Hogwarts wasn’t such a big school, so most of the introductions had already been done in first or second year. It had been a long time since Raphael had needed to worry about what name to use, especially once Cheese had become a popular nickname for him. “I-I’m not a subset of somebody else,” he spluttered, trying to come up with something more articulate to say. “I just…don’t usually do the talking. Addy and Brígh are much better at it.” At least, they didn’t seem to embarrass themselves so much, and they certainly knew how to hold their own in an argument. He did tend to fade into the background sometimes, but he'd never seen it as a loss of his identity or something. His eyes dropped to the bowl she was still adding ingredients to, and the Hufflepuff in him was stronger than any indignation he might feel about her blunt observation. “Can I…help with something? I usually do the mixing.” It was true – Penelope always took the lead on anything in the kitchen, ever since they’d been little, and Rafe was nothing if not good at diligently following instructions.

For some odd reason poor Raphael got very defensive over the fact he had identified her very much by who she was not, which didn't bother her in the slightest. She shrugged at his defence. "We look very much alike so we get that all the time. It would be a rather strange thing to get angry over if you ask me. Even more so since we are identical triplets." She was also aware that she wasn't quite as vocal as Luna, nor as energetic as Phoebe. She was a calm person and more likely to disappear into the background, which hardly bothered her. She didn't exactly need a spotlight on her life to feel like she belonged in it. She knew it was her life to live, and that was enough. "It must be hard to constantly be compared to an older sibling constantly. At least my sisters and myself don't set a premise for one another as we all are on the same stage and pace within our school and career." She mused, not wanting to imagine constantly being compard to their older brother. Luckily the three were so different and strange in their own way that nobody tended to tie them to their brothers too much. They were three that just happened to be related to their brothers. His response to her question was a little flustered, which she could understand. She tended to be rather direct in her way of dealing with people and sometimes it wasn't quite expected. She kept a straight face as he explained and nodded a few times. "So should I call you Raphael or Cheese?" She then asked, a small smile playing on his lips as she asked him for his own preference and in a way, what he identified as more. "Though I can easily understand why they tend to lead in conversations. They have rather strong personalities between them. In that sense they kind of remind me of Luna." She gave him a sly little smile. "She has the honour of being the most easy of us three to identify because of her assertive style of interacting. It can be challenging to get a word in once she decides how she wants things." Selene said with a slight chuckle as she handed him the bowl after he offered to mix the ingredients for her. "Maybe we can also bake a cake. It's been a while since I did that. I usually end up going for cookies for some reason. Our grandmother from dad's side used to bake them with us when we were little. People say I remind them of her." Selene admitted and then frowned, although an amused twinkle played in her eyes. "I wonder if I'm going grey already." Raphael Caelan McLaggen

Rafe couldn’t sympathize much with what it must feel like to be a triplet, because his own experiences with having two older siblings had been much different. His first year had been the only one where all three had been at Hogwarts at the same time, and even then there hadn’t been much overlap between the Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. He and Ella had an age difference of four years, after all, and it was even larger between him and Mickey. They’d set a path for him to follow, and in many ways he was in his current predicament because of it. Mickey being a Quidditch superstar (and truly their father’s son) had set the bar high for Ella and Rafe. Ella had decided to reject the family completely, and her decision to run away had only increased the pressure on Rafe to an unbearable degree. Cormac had made his thoughts perfectly clear on how he expected his youngest son to act, and convincing him that Raphael could somehow balance between Mickey’s total obedience and Ella’s complete disconnect seemed increasingly impossible.
He didn’t know if he wanted to share all that with someone else, even his closest friends, because he was sure it would cause them to see him differently. So instead he shot Selene a muted smile and said, “I guess it’s hard. My dad expects I’ll turn out either like my brother or my sister. Doesn’t seem to have occurred to him there might be another option.” He paused before hesitantly adding, “It must be nice to be with your sisters all the time. Are you close?” Raphael didn’t know much about the Trelawney triplets outside of the fact that they’d all gotten onto the Slytherin Quidditch Team. He knew some teams invested heavily in researching their opponents, but the Hufflepuff captain had always told them to just play their best and not worry too much about what the other teams were doing. Rafe accepted the bowl obediently and began to mix – he was the usually the muscle in the kitchen, after all! He laughed at her question and thought about it for a moment, because Brígh had been the one to assign him the nickname and it had caught on so quickly that it just became his title. “Cheese is fine, I like it,” he decided. It was true too, since it reminded him that he was part of a group, and not just by himself like he’d been afraid would happen seven years ago. Still, he could do without Brígh’s ‘clever’ spin-off nicknames.
“Luna is…” But Raphael trailed off, because he wasn’t exactly sure how to finish that sentence. Opiniated? Intimidating? She didn’t care what others thought of her, which was an admirable quality, but she also tended to bulldoze over other people to get what she wanted. “She’s not a bad sort of person,” he said instead, “I just get the impression she isn’t around many people who value her properly.” Maybe it was an overly Hufflepuff way of thinking, but Raphael thought that people lashed out mainly when they themselves had been hurt – it was a way of sharing the pain, and ultimately feeling less alone. He hoped it was that rather than just a mean streak, because that meant some proper care and attention could sort things out. Selene’s observation about becoming a grandmother made him laugh again, and Rafe shrugged. “What’s wrong with that? Everyone wants someone who knows how to take care of people.” The thought of baking a cake made him wince, though. “You’d have to tell me what to do. I can burn water. But I’m much better at the decorating part, that’s just art.”

Raphael mentioned the paths laid out for him and Selene thought it over for a moment. It seemed common to be unable to see options that had not yet occurred to most people. Selene usually lived in the future enough to know there were so many unseen paths that predicting the future was very difficult. She'd tried but her prediction of late had all been claiming one disaster after another. She'd considered telling somebody, but the accusation that Luna had thrown at her the last time she'd failed to see a rather large and dangerous event was still fresh in her mind. What reason would anybody really have to believe her in the first place? He mentioned being close with her sisters and she smiled slightly and shrugged. "We used to be closer when we were younger." She simply stated, as if that was all there was to it. He opted to go by Cheese, which was fine by her. If it was a name he wanted for himself ther was no issue. No matter what names they were given, the names they chose for themselves mattered at least as much. "I like it. Nobody ever really gave me specifically a nickname. It's kind of nice that your friends did." Selene said with a smile. Sometimes she did wish to be seen as more than an extension of her sisters but that seemed to be her doom. People thought they involved her when they truly involved her sisters more. If she was left on the outskirts of interaction it was all fine because they saw her as part of it regardless. In due time, Selene figured it could lead to some bitterness and resentment on her side but for now it was okay. School was designed to figure all of that out after all. No need to rush things. Selene mused for a moment on her sister. "I think she's insecure up to some point. She's the middle child in every single way. Older and younger brother, older and younger sister and yet nobody really treats her as the center of their attention. I sometimes wonder if she dislikes not having something other than the middle that is obvious. It's challenging enough to be part of a set, but even more so when that tends to be all you're recognised for. By now her scowl and overwhelming personality distinguish her, but that might be good. At least it gives her a chance to stand out." Selene said with a shrug. It was the best she could figure as to why Luna had a much more conflict seeking nature than either of the other girls. He mentioned everybody wanting somebody that knew how to take care of people and a knowing smile and twinkle to her eyes told him he was right. "Naturally. That is why most grandparents feel so sad after their spouses die. They are caregivers, but who takes care of them? On the physical side that would be doctors and nurses, but who do they really confide in since those that are still around at that age are usually those they spent their entire lives caring for. That dynamic is hard to switch around." She said and winked. She wondered if he'd ever considered it, but she wasn't going to burden him with her concerns. She was most likely to actually share those with the elderly. They seemed to understand better and were amongst the few that Selene actively trusted to be able to build a mutual bond with. The others? She'd let them come to her if they needed somebody. That seemed to be her thing after all. He mentioned then that she'd need to tell him what to do to bake the cake since he could burn water and she giggled for a moment. "I'll do everything that includes heat then. You can mix and decorate, as none of the recipes I usually use can be mixed too much." She said in amusement. They existed, the recipes that needed to be light and fluffy and could be beaten dead if mixed too much but a simple cake like the ones that she enjoyed making? Simple and not easy to mess up as long as you didn't get confused on oven time and temperature. Raphael Caelan McLaggen

Cheese let the conversation lapse into a comfortable silence for a moment as he focused intently on mixing the bowl. He wasn’t much of a baker, and he’d certainly never tried to do it alone before. No, the fun part about spending time in the kitchens was doing it with your friends – sneaking in with Brígh for a midnight snack, or flipping through Hufflepuff cookbooks with Penelope for something new to try. He’d once spectacularly failed to sculpt Hogwarts out of a chunk of chocolate, but it had convinced him to put in extra hours for his Charms homework without being prompted by Addy, and it had led him to convince the Art Club supervisor to host a special seminar on sculpting. All in all, he had good memories in the kitchens, and he was secretly relieved to have found Selene here tonight too. He’d already tried the whole being-alone-with-his-thoughts thing, and that had only led to him tossing and turning in bed.
“I like it too,” he agreed, finally gingerly setting the bowl back on the table, “But now Brígh only uses my full name when I’m in trouble, and that’s something my mum used to do. That stays between us though, or I’ll get a good whack ‘round the head.” Rafe looked at Selene sternly for a moment, but he couldn’t hold the expression on his face for a long time, even as a joke. It was quickly replaced by a smile, and he fidgeted with all the ingredients Selene had laid out on the countertop while he waited for more instructions. He twirled an egg around, watching it spin and doing it again once it began to slow down. It was easier than having a sustained conversation about Luna, because he really didn’t know any of the triplets well enough to make judgments about them. Sure, he’d played against them before, and he had the occasional encounter with Luna off the Pitch too. “Well, she definitely stands out,” Cheese agreed, laughing slightly to himself – it seemed a nice enough way to end that topic, right? He didn’t want to insult Luna, but he also got the impression Selene wasn’t ready to spend the rest of the night singing her praises either. He didn’t really want to get involved in that at all.
He didn’t know what to say when Selene mentioned caregivers and aging. That stage of life seemed so far away to Cheese, and he’d never really spent that much time thinking about death. Merlin, he didn’t even know what he wanted to do after Hogwarts, and that future was only months away. “Oh! Erm…” he said, a little startled at the idea that she might be expecting a response. “That’s why family is so important, I guess. Even if you want to shove them off their broomstick every now and then.” Not that Raphael would ever manage that – being the youngest had its perks, but the ability to outfly Mickey or Ella had never been one of them. And he still had a sneaking suspicion that Mickey had pushed him on purpose as kids so he could beat Rafe at the ‘Lil fierce flyers’ competition. Alas, they would never know. Selene’s cooking instructions worked for him – Rafe squirmed excitedly in his seat at the chance to decorate – and he nodded as he peered into the bowl. “Aye aye captain,” he said in a mock-serious tone. “So…this next maybe?” Cheese picked a random packet from the table, squinting at it before handing it over to Selene for inspection.

"No need to worry, I'll keep the secrets to the grave." She said, feeling that uncomfortable tingle up her smile as she said it. Sometimes she got that sensation when a glimpse of the future was finding it's way to her, and other times it was just because certain topics made her slightly uncomfortable. This time it seemed to be an ever so faint and short feeling of dread and despair. Since there was nothing to link it to and no indication as to what it might mean, she ignored it. Maybe if she'd been with her sisters, she would have investigated, but these days she avoided doing so. He mentioned family was important when growing old, but Selene knew quite a few of the people in the care home had lost theirs early or fought with them too often. He was both right and horribly wrong in his assumptions. "I guess you're right." Selene said, as if musing to herself. "We are stronger together...." She mused then, thinking of the way all their seer abilities seemed strongest when they were together. Perhaps they'd have been a true prophet of some sorts if they had not been triplets but a single person. Selene had never really understood the appeal of packets for baking after she'd started baking from scratch. Yet she looked at the packet, more to see what the end result was supposed to be, and then nodded thoughtfully. "I think we can do that..." She mused and started gathering up some ingredients. The packets were nice enough for inspiration on what to make, and that was really all she needed in the end. To know what to make so she could actually make it. She liked how predictable baking was in that sense. One could easily predict what happened if they forgot an ingredient or used too much of one or the other. It just made sense. There was a sudden change of expression on Selene’s face for a moment before it returned to its usual calm and relaxed state – subtle, but Cheese had happened to be looking and wondered what that was about. She’d looked uncomfortable for a moment, like when a bad thought suddenly occurs to you and stops you in your tracks. He’d had a few of those lately, finding himself in the middle of a task when a huge wave of anxiety would hit him. Rafe wasn’t usually a classic worrier, since he preferred to wait until things happened to him before he tried processing it, but seventh year was a time when even the most laidback student could gain an edge. There were NEWTs to worry about, and the whole big question of what came next after graduation. Some students had it all figured out already, but Cheese had never been a good planner and he’d been hit this term with an overwhelming feeling that he was falling behind. All the rollercoaster drama with Addy hadn’t done wonders for his self-confidence either – but he forced himself not to go there.
Instead, he shot Selene a concerned look. “Erm, you okay? I’m not making you uncomfortable, right?” Rafe checked, letting go of the egg for a moment as he straightened up. Raphael didn’t think he’d said anything particularly outrageous, but he couldn’t figure why else a look of discomfort would cross Selene’s face. At any rate, she didn’t look uncomfortable anymore, only thoughtful as she contemplated his observation about family. Cheese thought he remembered Selene had said that she had other siblings too besides her sisters, but besides that…he really didn’t know enough about the Trelawney family to make any observations. His idle comment was only based off his own complicated family dynamic, and his extensive experience dealing with having diametrically opposed siblings and distant parents. It was hard to believe that he, Ella, and Mickey were all related sometimes. They all had that same trait of avoiding discussing the elephant in the room, and of course the natural McLaggen talent for flying, but besides that…
He watched with interest as the loose ingredients in the bowl slowly started to resemble some sort of cake batter. It only occurred to him then for the first time that after Hogwarts, he was going to be responsible for cooking his own meals. For someone that had lived first off his mum’s cooking, and then that of the house-elfs of Hogwarts…it was a daunting thought. Raphael foresaw a lot of takeout in his future, not that he had much of a talent for Divination at all. “I wish I could do that,” he observed idly, a little note of regret in his voice as he started to fiddle with the ingredients on the table again as he grew a little restless. It was hard to believe it was already past curfew, because Rafe felt like he’d just been hit with a spell that made him twitchy. He felt more wide awake now than in History of Magic, although Professor Selwyn did a good job keeping the students on the edge of their seats with spontaneous reenactments of magical historical events.

He asked if she was okay and she just smiled slightly and shrugged, moving on to the next part of the baking. "Sometimes, when somebody says something, I get like a tingle down my spine. Kind of like a very short burst of anxiety? It's like the feeling something bad is going to happen, I guess?" she said with a bit of a shrug. She knew it was a mock vision of sorts. Something that might have given more information if she's been around her sisters rather than off on her own. All their powers were stronger when they were together. "It fades and it's rather hard to say where it comes from, but it's just a feeling. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has those moments from time to time. Maybe it's stress related," she mused for half a second before shrugging it off again. Whatever it was, she didn't want to worry about it right now. She didn't want to have to worry about it ever. He said he wished he could do that as she started baking and she chuckled. "It takes some practise and sometimes I mess up too. My nan taught me from a relatively early age and I've liked it ever since. Same with knitting. If you practise enough and buy a few decent books you'll manage to nail the basics in no time. Setting timers helps a lot, mind you. If I bake with Phoebe I always use them because she can be very distractable at times." It was one of those things where her enthusiasm about things some times ran away with her a little and while Selene never really minded it all that much it had meant she'd adapted and found ways to make sure they didn't accidentally burn something along the way. Plus it helped the girl that couldn't keep track of time if her life depended on it to still be on time with things. How often had she walked off for just a minute or gotten places early in her mind only to forget later and find something burning while feeling a weird sense of deja-vu where she thought she'd gotten something out of the oven. Selene was horrible at keeping track of time without the proper tools to do. "All it takes is practise and knowing your weaknesses. Timing is mine, so timers are always my best friend." Cheese shot her a puzzled look as she explained the odd quirk that happened sometimes when talking to people. He supposed it was a very literal way of bringing to life the saying of someone walking on your grave, although he couldn’t personally relate to the thought. He wasn't a deep enough thinker for that, and he certainly never got a chill like he knew something was about to happen. “You can…tell when bad things are about to happen?” he asked in a hushed voice, eyes widening in awe at the thought. Despite it being the middle of the night, and Cheese shuddered at the thought that he had classes early tomorrow morning, his mind was racing with all the implications of what Selene was describing to him. It suddenly occurred to him that her last name was Trelawney, and she had several famous Seers in her family. Something he should have known, since his dad had all sorts of horror stories about Divination classes at Hogwarts and what a wash the subject had been. Cormac didn’t believe in Divination, but that Trelawney had famously turned out to be the real deal, so… “Maybe it's not just a feeling,” Rafe suggested, his face still slack with wonder at the thought, “Maybe you’re a Seer! Wouldn’t that be something?” He'd never really considered that there must be students with clairvoyant abilities at Hogwarts, and now he found himself wondering if some Slytherin somewhere was using it to cheat on their homework.
But Selene didn’t look excited at the thought that she might be having visions about the future, and her tone was doubtful as she explained what she thought about her interesting ability. She seemed rather ambivalent about the whole thing, and Rafe wondered if her sisters knew or if it was a point of tension with someone else. He couldn't imagine why, or what the negatives of having such a cool quirk would be. But, at any rate, it really wasn’t his place to pry, and given that she didn’t look all that thrilled at the ability to know when something might happen…well, Cheese left it alone and instead pondered a different mystery. He tilted his head as he studied the bowl, and his terrible inability to cook. He could get away with it for now, but it wouldn’t always be that way. Very soon – Merlin, very very soon – he was going to have to find his own way in the world and take care of himself. And Raphael was woefully unprepared. He’d never been good at being alone, and between home and Hogwarts…he’d never had to be. Always surrounded by his family, or his friends, or people that were meant to be there to take care of him. So the thought of being out in the big wide world, and not even be able to prepare a simple cake batter…well, it did worry him. Dragon scales, how was he going to feed himself? Cheese wasn't a Seer, but he could see lots of takeout in his future.
So he listened carefully as Selene mentioned that she’d been learning how to cook for a long time, and that she quite liked it. Cheese nodded as he observed out-loud, “Looks like I might have to learn too. Er, you know, with graduation and all that soon. Guess I know what to ask for as a birthday gift?” It had completely slipped his mind that his birthday was in less than a month, but a cooking book or some sort of instruction manual for life didn’t sound like a bad idea. Cheese made a mental tally to write to his mum – she’d be less uptight than Cormac about a boy learning how to cook. He might mention it to Penelope too, since she had shown quite a talent for anything that required the use of a kitchen, but the thought of syaing that to Addy made a blush rise to his cheeks. He hated admitting to her when he couldn't do something -- she was already so much more talented, and way out of his league. As for Selene’s last bit of advice, well, that was just good advice for life generally. Practice and know your weaknesses. Cheese had always tried to be thoughtful about acknowledging what he wasn’t good at, although he knew that list was plenty long. And first and foremost – his tendency to let people walk all over him. So he nodded wisely and smiled as he said, “You could put that on a poster!” He’d been spinning one of the eggs around, although he gave it a rather enthusiastic twist and winced as he watched it sail off the table. “Oh…sorry. I’ll just, uh, stop touching them.”
