What's it gonna be today? Keep chipping at my soul March 14, 2026 @sacha Rhys could barely breathe against the pressure in his chest. A combination of anxiety and rage, it was some kind of miracle that he’d walked out of Vasilia’s pub as calmly as he could manage, and there were no fists thrown at faces that deserved it. Again he wondered how it was just his luck—things were going well. And now he’d found out earlier in the day, by total accident, that the woman he’d fallen in love with was long-time best friends with the person who’d made his existence hell when he was at Hogwarts. The thought had Rhys drinking the entirety of his glass of whiskey in one go, though the bartender hardly reacted when the empty glass was placed back on the bar.
It was a small world, they’d say, and they would be right. Rhys thought about talking to Ilija, but he was sure he had his own stuff going on—plus, it seemed strange to talk to him about his own sister in this way. The bartender came by and refilled his glass with a wave of his hand though he didn’t stop for conversation. The bartenders knew Rhys was hardly one for conversation, and he was a familiar face at many by now. At this point, the whiskey only made the pace at which he was running around in his own mind faster, at least until he was brought out of his thoughts by someone loudly taking the stool next to his. Glancing over, he saw the long hair recognized the unbothered demeanor of an old friend. Sacha might remember Rhys getting pummeled in the hallways at school by Idris, though perhaps it was smart of him to have steered clear at the time. ”Sacha.” Rhys acknowledged him, drinking this next glass in one go as well.

Sacha was the sort that you could talk to without fear that he'd ever really pay much attention to what you were saying unless you wanted him too. He was in many ways the best sound board. It was how he'd come to join Rhys for drinking from time to time. Rhys wasn't much of one to talk often, and Sacha didn't mind. He didn't care enough to have long conversations with Rhys. Though when Rhys did need to talk Sacha was great at nodding at the appropriate times and not giving Rhys any unsolicited advice, as that wasn't what Rhys ever wanted. Even better? Unless Rhys actually wanted Sacha to remember the conversation (which he usually didn't) Sacha didn't pay close enough attention to actually recall it later. Thus Rhys was free to say whatever he wanted without fear of his words coming back up later.
Sacha had just gotten out of a particularly long rehearsal half an hour ago and decided that it was an ideal time to go have a few drinks. He'd been feeling slightly annoyed because the conductor had kept everyone late. It was due to a few mistakes from some of the other musicians. As such, the entire orchestra had to stay to keep playing the piece until those previously mentioned musicians had gotten it right. As he entered the Leaky Cauldron he spotted the familiar broad back of Rhys Greyback at the bar. It wasn't that Sacha actually recognized Rhys by his back, it was simply that he didn't know anyone else that could exude this much irritability from just their posture. Was Rhys ever not irritated? Rarely, it was probably why Sacha had come to recognize him so quickly. Rhys just always had an aura of angst that no one else seemed capable of.
Sacha crossed to the bar, pulled out the stool, and sat. He shrugged the violin case off his back and leaned it against the stool. With a quick motion he made it clear to the bartender he wanted the same as Rhys. Then, Rhys spoke, acknowledging his presence, before downing his drink. Sacha paused, before motion again to the bar tender two fingers, specifying to bring two drinks. "Rhys," he answer nonchalantly. It was a bit... unusual for Rhys to be drinking here. He was pretty sure Rhys had been drinking at some bar in the alleys mostly, but he hadn't bothered to find out where or what pub. "How many drinks deep are you?" He asked casually. It didn't think that shot he'd just down had been Rhys' first.

What's it gonna be today? Keep chipping at my soul March 14, 2026 @sacha Rhys would always be appreciative of his friends and their bonds, but he was also grateful that he hadn’t run into any of them after leaving the pub. The last thing he wanted was for any of them to tell him that there was nothing wrong, let it go, or try and fix it with some advice he would tune out. Rhys was angry, and he wanted to stay angry because he didn’t know what else to do at that moment and with the circumstances that were his life. And least of all, he didn’t want to see Vasilia—not because he actually didn’t want to, but Rhys was aware of his temper and how much he could run his mouth when angry.
Sacha asked how many drinks he’d consumed, and Rhys stared at the half-empty glass in front of him. Truthfully, he’d lost count as he ran circles in his own mind instead. ”No idea.” Rhys answered truthfully, drinking the entirety of his glass in one go. His anger was overwhelming him, it felt heavy, but at least some of the weight was being lifted by the amount of whiskey in his system. He let out a frustrated sigh. Sacha was an unlikely friend from their school days but mainly because they didn’t push one another, like a natural set of boundaries they never crossed. ”Do you remember Idris?”

Sacha wasn't someone that cared much to pay attention to people's emotional state. But there were some that were easier to read then a book. Like Rhys when he was angry. But to be honest? When wasn't Rhys angry? You didn't drink as much as Rhys and not have anger issues. But at least Sacha wasn't much affected by the anger. That and if Rhys went on a rage fueled rant, Sacha was very good at just tuning it out and not actually listening to a word that was said.
It took the bartender a moment before bringing the glasses Sacha had ordered. He'd known Rhys was about to empty his glass, hence the order of two. He smirked just a little at Rhys' words though. "Must be bad," he commented. For Rhys to be that many drinks in so early in the day? Something must have happened. Sacha raised his own glass to his lips and took a sip. He didn't chug alcohol like Rhys, much preferring to savor the flavor. Idris though? THat was a name he hadn't heard in a long time. Back in school he'd been some asshole in the year below Sacha. He'd gotten in a lot of fights, if he recalled. "Vaguely," was his answer as he took another sip from his glass. "Didn't interact much with him. Why?"

What's it gonna be today? Keep chipping at my soul March 14, 2026 @sacha Sacha responded as expected. And that’s what Rhys needed. He was angry, and the fact that he had resisted the urge to put his first through a wall was quite a feat. Honestly, Rhys couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so angry, he was undoubtedly an angry guy, but this was a whole new level for the moment. So the last thing he needed was advice or anyone trying to fix it, which is why he’d left the pub as soon as he could sneak away because he knew what Vasilia would do. She’d probably try to defend Idris, and that was because she was a kind and good person, and in Rhys’ mind, Idris deserved nothing of that beautiful person that she was. Then again, Rhys himself hardly felt worthy most days.
And as soon as Rhys had finished off his drink, more arrived—courtesy of Sacha. There were rarely comments on his drinking, which is all he wanted to do at the moment. ”Thanks.” Rhys managed to mutter as the bartender arrived and left. Drinking from the new glass, he placed it down a moment before responding. Finally, he turned slightly in his stool to face Sacha. ”Guess who Vasilia’s best friend is?” It was just like the Rhys’ life where something good would happen, and the other shoe would drop. Really, he was angry because he felt defeated. This was the downside to finding someone so wonderful and that wonderful person making him fall in love with her—her best friend was someone who had made his teenage years barely tolerable. The thought infuriated him a little bit more, and he ended up draining his glass again.
