March 20th 2026 Tonight was Hufflepuff Karaoke Night. There were a variety of tunes students were singing ranging from Muggle Music to Wrock. Now, Newt wasn’t much of a singer, especially if it didn’t involve singing in the shower in the privacy of his home..Newt could hardly handle public speaking in a room full of people...singing? Heck no. But this didn’t mean he wouldn’t partake in the festivities by watching and rooting for his friends. Newt wouldn’t ever miss a reason to hang out and bond with his housemates when presented to him. He enjoyed the Hufflepuff camaraderie, it made him proud to be a member of the most down to earth house at Hogwarts.
Newt and Cheese were tucked toward the back of the common room chatting as everything was going on. Music and off key singing rumbled in front of them; the current seventh year girl was confident but off key. Truthfully, it made his ears hurt.
The boy sank into his chair as people looked at them, encouraging them to participate. Luckily someone else volunteered so they were free for a few more minutes. Newt turned to Cheese, ”Ugh, I don’t think I’ve got it in me to sing in front of everyone, man..” Newt admitted to Cheese with a nervous laugh and shifty eyes, watching as the next participant took the stage, which happened to be the fireplace. Cheese was one of Newton’s favorite people he met at Hogwarts because he felt like the other boy understood him. He loved quidditch, was awkward around girls, and was too nice for his own good, like Newt. It was tough being a nice guy. Raphael Caelan McLaggen

20 March 2026 It could be tough to be a Hufflepuff – everyone assumed they were a house of pushovers, and for the most part they tended to be right. There were exceptions, of course, and even Raphael found the occasional reason to stand up for himself and put his foot down. But, if there was ever such a thing as being ‘too nice’ then it could definitely be found here. Still, as annoying as it was to be excluded from the feud over Quidditch Pitch time or talked over in class, he still really liked being a Hufflepuff. The entire house turned out for Quidditch matches to support the team, even the students who didn’t find the sport to be very interesting. And Rafe had never been told no when he asked to take a photograph of a Hufflepuff for the paper – feeding the owls in the Owlery, watering the Flitterbloom bushes in the greenhouses, or anywhere else Cheese might run into the yellow-and-black robes of Hufflepuff. Also, karaoke! Cheese loved to sing, and he had a hidden talent for it too – not that anyone had ever heard the boy outside the safety of the Hufflepuff common room. Still, that wasn’t his favorite part of their traditional karaoke nights. He just really liked hanging out with the other Hufflepuffs, choosing silly songs to belt out, and sneaking into the kitchens to politely request biscuits and butterbeer. The timing of this particular session was a bummer, though…Hogwarts was taking interested seventh years to the Ministry career fair in a couple hours, and Cheese was on a mission. Not a career-oriented mission, because he’d already spoken to the representatives from The Daily Prophet yesterday. But Addy had been avoiding him for a week now, since their slip-up in the Quidditch changing rooms, and she’d promised that they weren’t going to do that anymore. His palms were sweaty at the thought of confronting the girl of his dreams about this will they/won’t they dynamic they’d been in all year, but it just had to be done. Cheese blinked himself out of his thoughts as Newt gloomily admitted he didn’t think he could sing in front of the crowd. Suddenly Rafe remembered where he was, and took a sip of the forgotten butterbeer he was clutching tightly. “But our duet!” Rafe protested, giving Newt his best puppy eyes at the reminder that they always sung a song together on karaoke night. Cheese really valued his friendship with Newton, mostly because the rest of his friends were girls that liked to boss him around, and Newt wasn’t either of those two things. The best part was that he never had to explain himself either, because the odds were good that his friend was already thinking it too. “I have to go in a bit anyway,” Cheese said, voice brimming with nerves at the thought, “They’re taking us to the career fair soon.”@newt

March 20th 2026 As Cheese protested Newtons nervousness with an excellent pair of puppy dog eyes, he waved a hand in the air. "Okay, okay..well, since you begged." Newt gave in easily, "Try those puppy dog eyes on Addy and see what happens.." he quipped with a laugh. Newton felt the nervousness well up in his stomach but he was going to do it anyways, he always did! The Hufflepuff common room was the one place he felt the most at home since leaving Ilvermorny, he knew once he got up on that fireplace ledge and sang his heart out with one of his best buds, he'd be glad he did it. Newt detected the nerves in Cheese's tone, cocking his head to the side with curiosity as his brown eyes fell on his friend with a smile. "You nervous for the career fair thing, dude?" he asked him curiously, patting him on the back reassuringly. A part of Newt knew that he should have been more worried about what wanted to do after school, but he wasn't sure if he'd be in the UK or America. One thing he knew was he wanted to be in a greenhouse somewhere, that's all that really mattered.Reaching for one of the binders with the songs, he extended it toward Cheese. "You pick the song. Just don't pick 'I Got You Babe' from Sonny and Cher again." he joked lightheartedly, taking a sip of his butter beer. They never actually did that one, yet.Raphael Caelan McLaggen

Rafe gave a nervous laugh at the thought of trying the begging look on Addy. It did tend to work on Brígh every now and then, whenever he was particularly uncomfortable about something or he wanted to avoid getting whacked over the head again with her Gobstobes set. She let him get away with some things, unless it was a midnight trip to the Forbidden Forest or anything else that required a ‘bodyguard.’ But Addy? She had an iron spine, and there were only a few ways to lure her into doing something that she didn’t initially want to do. Sound logic, or Butterbeer. Sometimes used with success whenever Cheese needed help with homework, but it happened about as often as a blue moon. “The puppy dog eyes don’t work on Addy,” Cheese pointed out to Newt, “Which is why Hufflepuff hasn’t been able to get even a twig of a broomstick onto the Pitch this season.” They’d tried all the usual Hufflepuff tactics to change her mind – asking politely, baking cookies – but with no success yet.
Still, the fact that Newt had picked up on his hopeless situation with Addy made Cheese blush as he stared intently at the pair of fourth-year Hufflepuffs stumbling through the words of a song. He accepted Newt’s reassuring pat on the back with a grateful smile, although his shoulders scrunched with tension at the thought of the career fair. “Kind-of,” he admitted, feeling his knee begin to bounce with anxiety. “But not really about finding a job. It’s just, Addy will be going and she’s been avoiding me so I think I’m going to try to talk to her there because…it’s at the Ministry, right? No escape.” Cheese leaned back dramatically as he drooped into the comfy armchair. “But man, what do I say to her? Tell me what to say,” he fretted, finally turning to give Newt a pleading look.
He was grateful for the distraction of choosing a song, because if there was anything Cheese had learned over the last year…it was that he was absolutely dreadful with girls. He never knew how to deal with attention from one (like an actual real live girl), and he’d never gotten any indication from the girl he was actually interested in that Cheese was anything more than just a friend and an occasional hook-up. He stuck his nose into the binder and flipped through the pages, laughing at Newt’s condition. “Why not babe?” he laughingly asked as he jostled Newt with his elbow and kept flipping through. He tilted the binder to show Newt a page. “Okay, we have to do Queen. Six minutes of pure awesomeness.”
