i'm not looking for salvation just a little faith in anyone or anything Archie stood from his chair and raised his hands over his head. Hours spent in his charm slumped over the lengths of parchment he had assigned for his NEWT students. Exams were approaching, which meant that many students were buckling down, and many were catching up, and he wondered why he tortured himself by assigning so much work, but these kids needed to be prepared for whatever career they chose. His stomach let out a low growl, telling him it was dinner time. Ever since he’d started teaching here, he’d grown accustomed to the schedule of meals and his work life. It was simple, and one might even say boring, but he enjoyed it far more than he ever did Cursebreaking.
Long and hot days in the sands of Egypt or whatever tropical location he was assigned to. It wasn’t the life for him, though he’d enjoyed the historical part of it all. Archie waved his wand, and the parchment rolled themselves up and neatly placed themselves in his bag. He’d come back for these after dinner since he didn’t want to walk into the Great Hall with a bag slung over his shoulder. Leaving the lounge, he heard the footsteps of kids running to dinner late and others taking their time, but he didn’t say anything as he took his own time toward the Great Hall. As he neared, he spotted another Professor, but there was something about her expression that was troubling. ”Ivy?” He greeted her, his usual friendly expression. ”Are you heading to dinner?”

Ivy had been on edge since she'd left Anastasia in the ministry just a few days ago. She'd been unable to eat, and her sleep was restless. The days ticked by, each slower than the last, and Ivy was growing ever more certain that Elaine would strike. But when? She couldn't know. Ivy had stayed away from the Purifier safe houses as of late, focusing instead on her teaching and her students. She had pulled aside a few clever, but very confused students and ensured that they knew how to defend themselves if necessary. At least, she hoped. Ivy knew that if it came down to it, she would put her life on the line for this.
Ivy had taken to patrolling the second floor corridor when she was not forcing herself to be busy with marking papers or teaching classes or pretending to sleep. Perhaps Elaine would strike from the traditional entrance? But Ivy couldn't be certain - the mirrors after all had become very useful in coming into and out of Hogwarts. Still, it was better than nothing to make sure nothing was amiss near the out of order girl's toilets. Ivy nearly jumped out of her skin when she was addressed, her eyes wide and her dark hair wild.
"Oh, Archie," said Ivy, placing a hand on her chest. "You gave me a fright," she said, her tone not at all as casual as she had hoped it might be. "I er... I'm afraid I haven't any appetite," she said slowly, her gaze darting around the hall. "It's a bit late though. You should get down. Won't want to miss pudding," said Ivy, forcing a laugh.

i'm not looking for salvation just a little faith in anyone or anything Ivy seemed startled when Archie approached, which was different than her usual cool and calm demeanor. Like many times, they crossed paths in the staff room and in the castle where she seemed so in control. ”I apologize.” Archie added after she’d jumped. There was an air of anxiety about her, sometime in her tone. And while they were friends, he didn’t know her as well as he would have liked to even begin to decipher what might be going through her mind. ”Everything alright?” Maybe it was just the stress of the end of term. Magical Theory was a heavy subject, and in the way his own was with numbers, it was a stressful time for the NEWT level students.
Glancing at his wristwatch, he realized dinner was likely half over by now, and perhaps he could wait and drop by the kitchens later. The house-elves were always warm to the staff or at least when he would drop by. A few remembered his face from when he’d been a student. ”I doubt Alfie and Blaise have left me any.” The mental image of Blaise feasting away from a bit bowl of the pudding was humorous and also incredibly unlikely. A small grin came to Archie’s face but slowly left when he heard a low rumble. It wasn’t his stomach this time, and he slowly turned to face the rest of the Entrance Hall and noted the doorway leading to the dungeons.
But while he didn’t note another rumbling noise, he did smell something. Even if it had been more than a decade, he didn’t need his NEWT level Potions course to know what that smell was. ”Ivy….do you smell smoke?”

Having been on edge for days, Archie’s approach nearly drove Ivy out of her skin with fright. She appraised him as he apologised, a strange feeling surging within her. Archie had always been kind to her - to the point that she wondered what she’d done to deserve it. Again, Ivy was reminded of how she had always put her pupil’s needs before her own, and was certain Archie had done the same and respected her priorities. She opened her mouth to say something, to warn him to keep an eye out for anything strange or peculiar stemming from this very spot, when Archie observed at Alfie and Blaise wouldn’t have left any dinner. Ivy cracked a reluctant smile at that. ”A shame - the best course of any meal is pudding,” she said agreably.
As if on cue, a rumbling noise resounded throughout the castle. In the blink of an eye, Ivy’s wand was drawn, pointing towards the door of the unused girls toilet. But Elaine did not emerge. Earthquakes were not only uncommon, but almost impossible in Scotland. Ivy’s heartbeat tripled, beating a tattoo inside her ribcage. ”Archie, I -” But Ivy didn’t get to finish her thought. Archie’s head whipped around towards the staircase, looking suspicious. Did she smell smoke?
Ivy inhaled deeply, and her stomach dropped. ”Elaine,” she whispered, more to herself than anything. Her worst nightmare had been confirmed - that was no ordinary smell of acrid smoke. There was the tangy burn of magic that lingered, and Ivy knew that her former master had to be behind it. She lunged forwards, grabbing Archie’s hand tightly. ”Archie, gather as many students as you can and get them away from here. Get them out of the castle. Prioritise the students. Please, trust me,” said Ivy, her eyes wild with terror. ”Otherwise, we won’t survive the night.” She didn’t release his hand but instead dragged him along in her wake as she sprinted down the hallway, her eyes peeled for further signs of danger. Ivy had known about the dragon - but there was something different about this fire. A different magical source.
As Ivy and Archie wheeled around the corner, two yowling cats raced up to them. Jiggy and Sapphire darted up to them, Jiggy leaping straight into Ivy’s awaiting arms and curling onto her shoulder. Hazel’s cat was equally energetic, clambering up Archie’s robes and curling with fright on his shoulder. ”That’s Hazel’s cat,” she pointed out. ”Hazel… I need to find her,” said Ivy. She froze. ”Archie, we need to split up.”

i'm not looking for salvation just a little faith in anyone or anything Ivy seemed on edge and jumpy. Much like the brand new Cursebreakers, he’d encountered before leaving the profession and after they’d just finished a difficult assignment. As he smelled the smoke, he also gave additional pause as he heard a rumbling noise. That was new, and it didn’t sound good. Suddenly, Ivy grabbed his hand, and she gave him a set of instructions. It was drastic in his mind considering the smoke could very well have been from a student prank, and so could the rumbling, for that matter. ”Ivy…what’s going on?” She clearly knew more information than he did, but there was legitimate fear in her voice.
Archie wanted to ask more questions, but she pulled him down the hallway, and as they turned a corner, cats approached them. One of them climbed up his robes, and he winced as he felt the claws through the layers of fabric touch his skin. But Archie recognized them, as did Ivy. He paused, giving his colleague and friend a look. But he noticed the smoke start to thicken and become more visible. As a Professor of Hogwarts, it was one of his duties to protect the students, and in case this wasn’t a bad potions experiment gone wrong, he’d rather prepare for the worst. Archie nodded, giving Ivy’s hand a light squeeze before letting go and going up the stairs and skipping steps.
