Don't put your life in someone's hands They're bound to steal it away She was late. Again. On a typical day, Evelyn would have walked to the Great Hall with Luna, but she’d had to finish up an assignment for Charms since she still had to complete her Arithmancy assignment for the following day. Exams were fast approaching, and even Evelyn, usually unbothered by most things, felt the pressure. Walking out of the Common Room entrance, she only heard the usual noises of the torch flames and the few paintings either mumbling or snoring. It was quiet down here.
Evelyn was just about to the top of the steps to the ground floor when she heard raised voices, but they weren’t students. She glanced at the painting next to her—it was a knight and his horse in a field. But suddenly, he was joined by other knights, wizards, and faces she recognized from other paintings. What in Merlin’s name were they doing in this. It wasn’t often that they left their own frames, maybe to a direct neighbor but not one that was up the stairs. Evy’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion as they tripped over one another.
But she walked up the steps and traversed up the staircase to the Third Floor, where she wanted to drop off her late Charms assignment if Professor Yaxley hadn’t gone to dinner yet. Or she could leave it on his desk as well. But as she stepped off the moving staircase and walked the lonely hallway, she heard a loud noise. It was different than the usual random noises one would hear, and it certainly wasn’t Peeves but more of a rumbling and a roar. Evy paused, gripping the strap of her messenger bag tightly. Tentatively she took a few steps backward towards the classroom before beginning to note to smell of smoke and then the roar of flames out of another classroom.
Evelyn tripped backward as her eyes grew wide at the sight of flames, but the smoke was beginning to sting her eyes. She stumbled to stand up, and she almost fell again when some glass shattered next to her, but she made her way to a classroom. It was empty, and she waved her wand to help clear the smoke after closing the door behind her. She was breathing heavily from running and the smoke. She didn’t have any messages pulling out her phone, but she messaged Luna, and then she messaged the first person to pop into her head. Her sister Sarah would surely have a way to contact the Headmaster or at least help as a Ministry Law Enforcement. But her phone was also loud with notifications from other students. They’d seen the fire as well. ’There’s a fire at Hogwarts. I’m stuck on the third floor. I don’t know where the professors are.’ It wasn’t as though she could send them a text message, and as much as she had practiced, her state of mind didn’t let her cast a corporeal Patronus to send a message. She was stuck. Slowly she walked back toward the door and cracked it open. While she could hear some burning, all she could see was the thick smoke.

May 15, 2026 Sarah got out her phone as soon as she felt it vibrate, expecting it to be from someone else within the Ministry. She was already nearing the gates of the school but stopped, checking to make sure that there wasn't something else. It wasn't someone from the Ministry, though; it was Evelyn.
There’s a fire at Hogwarts. I’m stuck on the third floor. I don’t know where the professors are.
Typing as quickly as she could, she wrote Evelyn back:
On grounds. Interpol were called. Use Bubble-Head Charm. Window?
It was a terrible suggestion, Sarah thought as she sent it, that her sister might need to jump from a window to escape the school, but it was better than the alternative. Evelyn needed a way out, and there was no guarantee that the castle would remain stable enough for her to evacuate via the staircases. She could already see people beginning to pour out of the building. The longer her sister waited, the less likely that she would be one of them.
In the meantime, Sarah raced towards the castle, wand drawn. She scanned the third floor as she ran. It would be a long way down from there.

Don't put your life in someone's hands They're bound to steal it away Evelyn was taking a moment to gather herself. And she kept glancing at her phone to see if Sarah had seen her message or if anyone was messaging her. She wondered where her friends were and if she should stay put or find a way to the Great Hall. But she didn’t know where this fire was coming from, but she only had to deal with smoke for now. Her phone buzzed, and she saw a response from Sarah, and she felt a bit better now that Interpol was here. Did that mean the Aurors were as well? This couldn’t be just a small fire if the Ministry was here.
Still, Sarah’s suggestion was mildly helpful. The bubble-head charm would help with the smoke, but as she ventured toward the window, she was reminded how high up the third floor was in this giant castle. She wrote another message quickly, noting the smell of smoke getting stronger. ’I’m in the Charms corridor. Going to try and find my way to the tower entryway.’ It was closer than the Entrance Hall. Evy crossed her bag across her chest and slowly opened the door of the classroom. She didn’t see giant flames, and the thick smoke hung to the high corridor ceilings. Walking slowly, she turned right leading to a tower on the castle's south side, but the smoke thickened, and she fully collided with something. At first glance, she thought she might have hit a suit of armor as she had been looking behind her, but then she realized it was another. ”Sorry.” She coughed and heard more voices. ”Do you know where the fire is?” Evy stood up. Maybe the person had seen something from the direction they came.
