We are not the names that we've been given We speak a language you don't know James crossed his arms, eyes concentrated on the floor, but he listened intently to the Head Hit-Wizard as they went over the plan again. The past two days had been a bit of a whirlwind, and for once, he kept his mouth shut, and he didn’t even smile as he comprehended the gravity of the situation. Fortunately, there were other Order members here, and of course, Bianca led the charge of this mission. Elaine was in the Castle. The thought gave him chills and made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. His instinct was to run in there, but he knew he’d be magically grabbed by the back of his shirt and then pinned to a tree and forced to sit out.
Still, he was worried about Lily and his mother. She was there and without a clue of the danger beneath her feet. As well as all her classmates and James’ friends. Order members were on site in the Castle, but unfortunately, they had to start in the village due to Hogwarts’ grounds enchantments. His boss finished his briefing and left to speak to Bianca and the Head Auror. James glanced around. Nobody was really paying attention to him, so he stepped away from the other Hit Wizards and Witches to walk down an empty alleyway. When he felt he was far enough, he took out his wand and took a deep breath.
Just like he’d seen his father do once before, a thread of silver formed from James’ wand and took the form of a hippogriff. The Patronus Charm, a quick way to communicate and honestly easier for James than managing to send a hurried message on his phone. ”The Ministry has assembled Aurors and Hit-Wizards to raid the Castle tonight. Tell the others and stay safe.” The majestic creature went off and James glanced around him again to make sure he wasn’t seen. Phoenix Rising resurfacing had been his idea, and Brigh had recruited her friends. James knew they would be alright, though he hoped collateral damage could be avoided at all costs. Glancing back up at the Castle he paused a moment before returning to the group.

Brígh lounged lazily on one of the armchairs near the fire, putting off further homework that she really didn't fancy doing. She and Addy had finally come to terms with one another, and agreed that they wouldn't keep secrets anymore. In all honesty, Brígh was relieved that Addy and Cheese had finally gotten together. Brígh felt quite proud really, having brought the pair of them around. They were off snogging somewhere or something, Brígh wasn't entirely certain. She supposed she ought to meet them down at dinner, but she was having a much nicer time producing colourful bubbles from the end of her wand.
It was in this exact position some short amount of time later that a streak of silver flew in through the window of the common room. The fire roared, but the room was mostly empty. "The Ministry has assembled Aurors and Hit-Wizards to raid the castle tonight. Tell the others and stay safe." James Potter's voice spoke from the mouth of the hippogriff patronus, more cryptic than ever. Brígh stared at the spot as the patronus dissipated, and she was no less confused than when it had spoken. Why was the Ministry sending in reinforcements? For what? Was there to be an attack on the castle?
More slowly than she would have liked to admit, Brígh scrambled from her spot on the armchair and sprinted up the stairs to her dormitory. She made a beeline for her bedside table to collect her phone - before noticing that Lily was sitting on her bed. "Lily!" Brígh exclaimed, and in a split second made a decision. "There's going to be a fight. The ministry are coming to Hogwarts. Can you help protect the younger students? Help me and Addy?" she pleaded quickly, her eyes darting around the room. "James told me," she added as an afterthought. Finally, she found her phone and tapped in Addy's number. This was much more urgent than a text message.
"Addy, can you find Cheese, Eggy, and Dicky and meet me in front of Greenhouse three? The Ministry are coming to the castle... for something. I dunno what," said Brígh quickly to Addy before her friend could even speak. "I'll explain more soon." And she hung up. Brígh turned expectantly to Lily. "Well? Are you coming?"

I will overcome And I refuse to run May 15, 2026 tagged ”Dicky—how in Merlin’s name do you know so much about first edition books?” Addy shook her head, sitting back in her chair in disbelief. They had the Charms textbook still and after all the drama regarding Dicky walking in when Addy and Cheese were in a compromising position, she’d finally let him have the book. Plus, with exams approaching Addy didn’t quite have the time so sit and flip through its ancient pages and absorb the knowledge. The thought made her stomach flip, just a few more short weeks and she’d be done with her schooling and off to work at the Ministry of Magic.
Addy’s phone began to buzz on the library table and she grabbed it before the Librarian told them they were being too noisy. The screen told her she was receiving a call from Brígh, which was unusual since they all rarely called one another versus messaging. She couldn’t even speak a word before Brígh’s voice strung together a lot of words at once and Addy tried to understand it all. ”The Ministry? Brigh—why—wait. Brígh!” The call ended and Addy sat in disbelief and stared at her phone. Looking at Dicky she blinked a few times. ”Brígh said the Ministry is coming to Hogwarts and to meet her at Greenhouse three.” She paused wondering if Brígh had lost her mind or maybe James had told her something.
”Dicky, can you call Eggy?” She stood out of her chair and placed her books back in her bag, while pulling out her phone to call Cheese. There was a chance he had gone to Dinner already and so had Penelope, but if this was nothing she could at least drag Brígh to dinner since they were already late. ”Lets go.” Putting her phone to her ear she walked swiftly out of the library, very few students remained that had chosen to skip dinner and study for their exams instead.

▲ Doing schoolwork before dinner was certainly a strange occurrence for her. She even had a whole two books spread out on her bed for it! The concentrating part was the hardest but though, and she found her eyes flicking over to see what Brígh was doing every now and then. She desperately wanted to talk with her roommate because it would be a welcomed distraction from her work, but she wasn't going to initiate the conversation. Then the onus would be on her if she didn't finish her work. During one of her so not subtle glances at the other girl, a silvery wisp appeared in the room, and Lily heard her older brother's voice coming from it. Leaning around her bedpost, she spotted the hippogriff that made up James's patronus taking to Brígh. Something about the castle was being said, and then the patronus disappeared. Lily stared across the room as Brígh started to move, then turned and started talking about how there was going to be a fight at the castle soon. That didn't make much sense. "Errr...okay? I'm not the best at shield charms or anything. Don't you think we should tell a professor?" She didn't doubt what was being told to her because it was coming from James, but her slowness with processing everything was severely hindering her reaction. The hippogriff had sort of appeared out of nowhere, and why hadn't James told her first? Sliding off her bed, she grabbed her wand and the map, shoving one into each pocket, and listened as Brígh called Addy Slater on her phone. Merlin it would be so easy if she had one of those too. Only a few more months and she could! As long as she graduated of course. "Yeah! I can go over to the boy's dorms and try to get them moving if anyone is still here," Lily said excitedly as everything started to add up in her head. While she wanted to see a fight, this wasn't any place for her to be and Brígh seemed nervous on her phone call. Giving her roommate a thumbs up, she hopped out of the dorm and onto the staircase, before running down and heading towards the other stairs that led to the boy's dorms. The common room was basically empty though when she went through it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

It was getting dark outside, but Raphael was so absorbed in his task that he hadn’t noticed. He wanted to finish developing the last of his photographs before going down to dinner, so he hovered impatiently over the half-filled trays in the darkroom attached to the tiny room the Art Club used for storage. Those meat pies were practically calling his name, after all. Cheese gave a satisfied hum as the images finally started to appear, and he carefully retrieved the photographs and hung them on the line. But…that dark smudge in the corner couldn’t be right. He had been doing this for too many years to have accidentally underexposed the images, and the rest of the graphic looked fine anyway. Narrowing his eyes, Rafe leaned in closer to study the blurred figure that hovered in the back of his shot – a photo he’d taken on his way to the kitchens for a quick snack. After a few moments of examining the rest of the roll, Cheese’s irritation began to waver and turn into concern. The dark shape wasn’t a mistake, or the result of sloppy technique. No, he could find the same figure in multiple shots, all different locations he’d taken in the dungeons around his common room and the kitchens. That was definitely a person, but they couldn’t be a professor. Raphael hadn’t seen anyone he recognized, and the way the they clung to the edges of the hallway, like they didn’t want to be seen…he began to check the stacks of images he’d developed this morning – but no, the figure didn’t appear by the Owlery or the Courtyard or even the Black Lake. Only the dungeons. Rafe mulled over this fact, indecision playing across his face. It was just like Brígh had told him all those months ago, wasn’t it? She was convinced something would happen at Hogwarts, and even more so that there was something she could do about it. But this couldn’t be that, right? Rafe jumped slightly as the sound of Addy’s ringtone cut through the air, and he quickly pulled his phone up to his ear. He wasn’t sure what exactly he was expecting – a nice hello from his girlfriend? A stern reminder that he hadn’t studied for their Transfiguration NEWT since last weekend? “…where are you?” he finally asked after several moments of silence. Addy’s words tossed through his mind and Rafe felt his heart sink into his stomach. Something wasn’t right. He paused a moment longer, then stuffed as many loose photographs as he could into his bag as he tore out the door. Cheese wasn’t a member of Phoenix Rising – he hadn’t quite joined Brígh in her insanity to start a student vigilante group. But somebody needed to know about this, and when it came to her and Addy’s safety…he would do anything. “…something…to do…with the kitchens,” Cheese panted, out-of-breath from running down several floors and across the grounds to the greenhouses. He shoved the photographs showcasing the dark figure into Brígh’s hands, then struggled to catch his breath. “Please don’t go to the Great Hall,” he said, fear lacing his voice – because surely everybody, including him, had been able to put together at least some of the pieces, right? A strange figure lurking around the kitchens after lunch. And everybody would be gathering for dinner now, if they hadn’t gone already. Cheese felt a chill travel down his spine at the faint glow that lit up the castle in the distance. That wasn't any regular fire... BRÍGH ENNIS O'DALAIGH

Brígh gave Addy no time to reply before she hung up the phone, turning her attention instead to Lily. "Yeah... good idea. And get Simon too, if you don't mind. Tell him to meet me by greenhouse three," said Brígh, offering Lily a tight but tentative smile. Lily dashed off to sound the alarm, and Brígh took a moment to collect herself. So, the ministry was coming here. That must mean something serious was going on. And James had essentially directed her to get Phoenix Rising together - which reminded Brígh to send Kat a quick message to meet her outside of greenhouse 3.
And if she was to gather Phoenix Rising... surely that meant something to do with the Purifiers. Were they going to be at the castle as well? James had made it out to appear there would be a big fight. Brígh gripped her wand tightly before following Lily out of the dormitory and through the common room. She instead clambered through the portrait hole and down the stairs. There was a rumble from deep within the castle - Brígh couldn't identify the immediate source of the sound, but it didn't sound very promising. Remembering to jump the trick step, Brígh flew down the staircase and emerged into the Entrance Hall to quite a sight.
Brígh barely had time to understand what was going on, only that there were bodies strewn across the floor. She couldn't stop - she had to rally the troops. Smoke was billowing up from the dungeons - she could only hope that Addy had managed to escape and clear out as many younger students as possible. She was glad she'd given the directive to meet outside, before braving the twisting halls of the castle. It seemed there was a fire somewhere within the castle. And thankfully, the professors already knew. Brígh flung open the oak front doors and sprinted through them, skidding to a stop outside the greenhouse.
Turning back to the castle, Brígh spotted a glow from the low set dungeon windows. A graceful, flaming serpent slithered past, exploding the glass as it went. Fiendfyre! Who could have been behind something so cursed? Brígh swore loudly, tempted more than anything to launch herself into the fray. But James had told her to get out. "Addy!" cried Brígh as soon as the blonde came into view, shortly joined by the lanky form of her boyfriend. "Addy! Cheese! Purifiers! Fiendfyre! We need to help!" Cheese thrust some developed photographs into her hands, and she quickly examined them. It turned out her gut feeling to put Cheese on the case had been right. There was something suspicious about the smudges of the photographs - Cheese was too practiced to make mistakes. "But what about the other students?" she asked in a rush.

@tagged dinner was the last thing on kat's mind as she sat in the back of the library. she'd been pouring over different charms books for the better part of the afternoon trying to finish off homework that she had been putting off for far to long. if she missed dinner she could always sneak into the kitchens on her way back to the dorm room later that night. it was one of the perks of being in the dungeons, it was easy access to the house elves that were all too eager to help the students out when they got hungry. her concentration was broken when suddenly she got the news that brigh wanted to meet her outside the third greenhouse. she frowned a little as she contemplated what the message could mean, what it could be and why now. she didn't ignore it though, as she got up and started packing her stuff up. it was then she started to feel a rumble through the floor of the library. that couldn't be good. she abandoned her book bag and hurried through the shelves, out of the doors of the library and down a staircase that would lead to the grounds.
it didn't take long for her to start smelling smoke, the halls slowly growing dark with the black heaviness in the air that seemed to seep up through the stones beneath her feet. she did what she could to avoid the main passages in the castle, lest she be stopped by a professor and herded away from where she was trying to get. at least she'd been at the school for the last seventh year and it was easy enough to find her way outside without being stopped. though she did figure that the professors at the school were distracted with whatever had caused the rumble. she ran through the grounds, making her way to where brigh and her friends were all gathered and she came sliding to a stop when she reached them. "what the hell is happening!?" she asked as she followed brigh's gaze to the castle in time to see the serpent slithering past windows, leaving them broken in it's wake. "i didn't see any coming from the library. most of them would be at dinner." she looked at brigh and even though she didn't know what the hell was happening, she knew they couldn't just stand here and do nothing.

I will overcome And I refuse to run May 15, 2026 tagged Putting the phone to her ear, she listened to it ring a few times. It made her nervous, and her heart flopped around in her chest. Even though their technology had been updated, sometimes the phone service was spotty when it came to the dungeons. From what Addy had researched, Muggles had similar issues, so it couldn’t be helped. If Cheese was still in the Common Room…well, she just hoped his phone worked. Finally, it connected, and she realized she’d been holding her breath while walking with Dicky toward the Tower Entrance of the Castle. ”Rafe—Brigh said the Ministry is coming to Hogwarts and to meet her at Greenhouse Three.” There was a pause, and finally, she heard him speak. ”I’m leaving the Library, Dicky is with me. I’ll see you there.” She paused, wanting to say more, but then she hung up, and they made their way down the hall.
It was surreal. Addy recalled the events with Ethan and the students dying a few years before this, and even then, it had felt like some strange dream. But she paused, Dicky almost running right into her. ”Did you hear that?” She asked, though voice filled with trepidation. A low rumbling, but unlike anything she’d heard before. Addy’s curiosity arose along with her fear, and she decided it was in their best interest to get to the Greenhouse as soon as possible. As they got to the exit, she saw other students hurrying their way out, this wasn’t a good sign, and she swore she overheard people saying something about smoke and fire, but she didn’t have time to stop and ask. Her main concern was getting to the Greenhouse and making sure everybody was okay. While Phoenix Rising was a small group, there were enough of them to hopefully do something.
She could see Brigh and soon Raphael, and they all stopped as they caught their breath from the journey. But she looked behind and just in time to see flames and smell the smoke that apparently was coming from the Dungeons. Her eyes grew wide—The Common Rooms. But surely everybody would have been in the Great Hall for dinner, right? Soon Kat joined them, and Addy nodded to greet her, still catching her breath but mainly thinking. ”Where’s Eggy? And Max? And Simon?” There were still people missing. ”Brigh—that fire is coming from the Dungeons, which means it's going through the Entrance Hall. We’d have to find another way in. I came from the Towers, but we don’t know where that fire is going.” Or where it had originated from. As much as Addy wanted to run back in and help, she was thinking about survival first. Fire, even in the Magical World, was not a force to be underestimated. She gave a worried look to Cheese, lingering for a moment before looking back at her friend. ”I’m assuming you heard from James? What else did he say?”

May 15, 2026 Penelope was grateful that her phone's constant buzzing had been enough to get her, Peyton, and Persephone to remain working on a Herbology assignment in Greenhouse Two before they could make it back into the Great Hall for dinner. It was all in the name of being able to check her messages, but they seemed to have had the right timing—or pure luck. Something was happening, and Brígh needed Phoenix Rising in Greenhouse Three. They were practically there already, and Penelope hurriedly messaged back everyone she could think to contact in Phoenix Rising:
In greenhouse 2 with Peyton and Persephone.
Instructing Peyton and Persephone to stay put and stay together as soon as she noticed the smoke coming from the castle, Penelope took a deep breath and got her wand at the ready. Brígh had convinced her that she needed to learn how to be prepared for anything, and it was only moments later that she saw everyone beginning to assemble.
"Addy! Cheese! Purifiers! Fiendfyre! We need to help!"
As much as Penelope hoped that that was only an exaggeration, she bolted out of the greenhouse and over towards the others. "Peyton and Persephone are still in Greenhouse Two," she relayed, her heart pounding. She didn't know if she would be better off bringing her sisters into this or not, but a part of her was afraid to lose sight of them for very long.

May 15, 2026 Max, too, was still on the grounds as dinner began, given that her Cornish Rex, Oscar, had decided to chase after a bird instead of coming back inside with her at the end of her free period. As she began to hear a commotion in the castle, it was clear that something had gone wrong beyond the average Dungbomb. Seeing students pouring out onto the grounds, including a number of students who had gone in the direction of the greenhouses, Max was prepared to go over and ask them what they were doing—until she realized that the students who had passed by were other members of Phoenix Rising. She took in a deep breath and pulled out her mobile phone from her bag, its battery dead.
Cursing, she scooped up a protesting Oscar and made her way in the direction in which she had seen the others travel and continued until she found them gathered outside Greenhouse Three. She heard a brief mention of her own name, too, from Addilyn Slater. Knowing that she couldn't very well carry her cat into a duel, she was relieved to hear Penelope Bainbridge mention that her sisters Peyton and Persephone were still in Greenhouse Two, from which she had apparently come.
"I'm here," Max called, though most of her energy was focused on dealing with her cat. "I'm not taking him back into the castle," she commented to the others, glancing between the castle and Greenhouse Two. She wasn't going to risk that. "I'll… erm, be right back." If either of the other two Bainbridges were allergic to cats, they would have to forgive her, Max thought.
Returning from Greenhouse Two one cat—and her school bag—lighter, Max clutched her wand in her hand, standing beside Penelope. She looked around at the others, trying to figure out what the plan was going to be.

Questions were flying left, right and centre, and Brígh felt a surge of anxiety well up within her. Hogwarts was going up in flames, with Fiendfyre raging. She knew only Elaine could have done this. Only someone so evil, so careless and self centred could have destroyed a beacon of hope for so many. Purebloods and muggleborns alike. She took two deep breaths, her face lit up orange from the flames. And then, a calm snapped over her, overtaking her fear.
"Right, Cheese said something about the kitchens. I'm sure the house elves know something's amok. Eggy, you're well acquainted with the elves - is there any chance you can call any of them here? I know they can apparate. Maybe they can help with the rescue effort, otherwise we need to get them out," said Brígh in a clipped tone. "In terms of other exits, I'm sure Lily is taking students from the towers through the secret passageway to Honeydukes. Most of the other passageways are blocked, except for this one -" she pointed at the willow. "But it's not much use getting people out of the castle as it is off the grounds." Brígh looked around at all her friends, eye contact lingering with Addy. "Cheese, you manage the evacuation from here. You're strong and calm - make sure students are okay once we get them out. I don't know what's awaiting us in Hogsmeade, but I'm sure it's nothing pleasant. If you touch the gnarled knot at the bottom of the Willow, it will freeze. Get students through there - it leads to the Shrieking Shack, where we will regroup in one hour." Another deep breath as she fixed her gaze on Addy. The person she trusted above all. Cheese had never been a fighter - but Addy was top of the class at everything.
"I don't think the purifiers will be expecting us. We'll just have to show them what we're made of - and not to mess with us," said Brígh, much more confidently than she felt. "Kat and Max, will you two check on the Great Hall? I haven't seen people coming from there at all, which begs the question... why? Be prepared to duel - purifiers will be in there. I'm sure Elaine would want maximum effect with her little plan." She turned grimly to Addy. "You know what we have to do, right?" said Brígh in a low voice. "This is what we've been waiting for. We'll have to go into the thick of it. You're the most talented witch I know, Ads," said Brígh, taking her friends hand. "If we can round up any milling students, there's a little known exit from the Transfiguration corridor - I think it was originally for servants or something, it's tight. But if we can get people there..."

I will overcome And I refuse to run May 15, 2026 tagged Everybody seemed to be speaking at once, and Addy looked at Brigh as she began to speak. Everybody listened as she directed people on where to go. The anxiety in her chest grew as she was called last, but she wasn’t surprised. Addy knew that she was capable and knowledgeable. Plus, deep down, she wanted to help and protect the people important to her. It's what her siblings would have done, right? It was the Slater way to step up to the plate and deliver what was expected, if not more. Besides, if she knew Brigh as well as she knew she did—she was running back into that Castle with our without Addy. They were both fighters with vastly different methods.
Addy nodded, face stoic as ever as she was digging through her brain for all their options. Which entrances were best to use, which ones were far from where the fire must have come from. At least observation, it appeared that the dungeons were consumed in flames which meant the lower Common Rooms were unsafe, but the fire might have not reached the other Towers yet. ”Lets go.” Addy responded. Addy dropped her bag. She wouldn’t need it and grabbed her wand out of her robe. But first, she turned to Cheese, and she grabbed his hand—she wasn’t really sure what to say, but the look in her blue eyes plead with him to stay safe. Phoenix Rising was not something he had wanted to be a part of, and yet here he was. Addy didn’t want to think about if something happened to him or anyone standing before her now.
She squeezed his hands and then let go, turning and looking at Brigh again. ”Lead the way.” But, they didn’t get very far before she saw a wispy white outline of a creature approach her. A badger. Addy knew who it was from before it spoke a short and clear message—she’d know that voice anywhere. Addy clenched her jaw and paused a moment. Of course, it was only natural she would be here helping the effort. But, Addy merely made a mental note to respond after she had helped Brigh. The Patronus disappeared, but Addy kept following Brigh.

ONE MINUTE THE BOOK WAS SAT IN FRONT OF Richie and the next, the world had imploded. Addy's phone pressed tightly to her ear, even tighter when she heard what was being said. Richie liked to think that he was a relatively smart boy, but it was difficult to think when he was panicking quietly. Though Addy herded him like an obedient dog, the Book of Spells from the Restricted Section clutched to his chest like it was stopping him from floating away. He removed one arm from it just the once, and that was to reluctantly call Egg as instructed - he was ignored, though he was partly glad, Richie didn't know what he'd have said to her if she'd answered. The world was ending? But, apparently, not in Greenhouse 3.
He followed in Addilyn's commanding shadow. Richie thought, palms sweating, that he might have blacked out a little bit and come to when he almost collided with her back. Her voice barely above a whisper, tense with caution. "No," He said back, much louder, his head lifting as he cast an eye around the space. His blood was rushing furiously, heart beating so quickly that a dull headache had begun right behind his left eye. He thought about a glass windshield and the sound of ambulance sirens. There was a stone caught in his throat. Though, the second rumble was louder, and it shook Richie from his stupor so viciously that he reached out and grabbed a handful of Addilyn's robes and squeezed until it hurt the bones in all his fingers. There was a fire below them, but it felt far more serious than just that.
They picked up speed after that, Addilyn's sure steps so rapid that Richie didn't have to shorten his own gangly gait to keep in time with her. He let go of her robe reluctantly, his head whipping around at every creek and cough as they wound their way through the hallways towards the greenhouses. He hated them at night, they always smelled so horribly wet, but it beat the pulsing tension inside the school halls. He felt watched, like he was a single breath away from disaster. Something was happening, something awful.
When they made it to the greenhouse, the tremor in Richie's scarred hand was so bad that it rattled against the cover of his stolen book - a staccato beat. His breaths were short and uneven, but he felt a little calmer when he finally saw Cheese and Brigh illuminated in the dim evening light. He smelled the smoke then, felt a phantom heat at the back of his neck and slapped a hand there and dug his fingers in. He remembered then, as they convened among themselves with an adult-level of purpose. A hand snaked in to his pocket, searching for a small, torn shred of fabric Richie kept on himself as a grounding reminder of his sister. His pockets were empty, and he felt himself go stiff with a fresh wave of panic as he remembered that he'd left it in his room, between the pages of his history textbook. He took a small step back, and then another, and another. His friends all too busy figuring out who was missing, and what they could do about it.
Richie turned on silent feet, moving in small steps before he was behind a pillar and he could break out in to a run unseen. He needed that piece of cloth like he needed breath in his lungs - both in sudden short supply. How stupid of him to leave it behind - he needed it. It was special, it had been his sisters. It was difficult to run with his arms crossed, but Richie couldn't bear to let go of the book as he peddled his legs desperately. Hopefully, he reasoned, the fire would not consume enough of the castle that he couldn't leap up some stairs and retrieve the fabric before he was caught, or even missed. He was being niave, he was being desperate. In fact, Richie wasn't thinking very logically at all when he cut across the courtyard on his way to the Ravenclaw tower.
Though moving entirely on blind panic, Richie had some forethought to remember someone had mentioned avoiding the entrance as he tried to keep himself closer to the rear of the castle. Somehow, along the way, he had lost his footing and Richie looked up to realise he wasn't quite sure where he was. The portraits all suddenly empty, as if the very art inside them had fled the scene. He slowed to a jog, an acrid smell nipping his nose as he heard a distant creaking. He turned a blind corner and skidded to a stop. At the very end of the dimly lit space he saw crumbling stone and a slithering, inflamed snake. It ate everything it touched, the remnants nothing but a smoky waste, and never was it full.
Richie was frozen, the Fiendfyre still as it opened a flaming fanged mouth and ate the wall behind it. It let in a gust of cold air, and its form flickered and frozen completely. Richie wasn't breathing. Somewhere, distantly, he recalled a personal piece on Fiendfyre and how - just like a twister - sometimes when it was moving towards you, it didn't look as if it were moving at all. The snake had no eyes, but a smoky halo and Richie skidded back a step as its frozen figure suddenly loomed in size. It was eating the whole corridor in front of him, and inevitably, Richie as well. He gasped, crouched, and pressed his body against the neighbouring wall with the book tucked under his chin like a shield. It was no use, nothing escaped that maw. And yet, with his eyes shut and his mouth pressed so tightly closed he felt his jaw ache, Richie was no eaten as expected.
There a second of blistering, anticipatory heat, and then such a cool breeze that it raised goosebumps all over him, right down to his very scalp. Richie blinked, gasped a stolen breath and lifted his head in time to see that the room opposite was gone, just the smoky sky exposed from the second floor and the woods shivering in the distance as the buildings remnants tumbled down the sheer cliffs edge. He hiccupped, turned his head to see the snake eat the path he'd originally come through before the protected, unsupported portion of floor collapsed under him and he fell in to the room below him. It had missed him, edged along the space and swerved the portion of the room Richie was crouched on.
Richie was winded where he landed on the ground. It had been a blessed short fall, the space below was cool, some kind of cavernous space - a passage between rooms maybe. A sound groaned helplessly from his chest, when he could breathe again, he realised the book pressed against his sternum was tingling where his skin touched it. He acknowledged, sitting up with a grunt, that the book the only thing special about his person. His scarred hand giving a jerking flex before it settled against the icy cover.
Richie got to his feet painfully, a wet feeling dripping down the side of his face and colouring his collar as he looked up at the space he'd fallen through and coughed in shock. He was alive, but was very aware that this might not last very long. One moment to embrace his dumb luck, to say goodbye to that sacred cloth and to get the hell out of Hogwarts before it fell to dreadful pieces - the crumbs left behind from the Fiendfyre's horrific feast.
Richie's back hurt viciously, but he couldn't stand still. His mind reeling as he thought about The Book of Spells, and how it was well documented that first editions could conjure rooms, talk back. And apparently, protect itself from the all-consuming hunger of Fiendfyre. The building and Richie flinched as he pressed against the first door he found and fell in to a tiny little cupboard, his foot knocking against an old tin mop. He exited it as quickly as he entered it and found himself in a hallway before the pillars marking the courtyard he had run through just a short while before. He could retrace his steps back to the greenhouse he'd run from. One thought occurred to him above the panic, he had to tell Addilyn about the book.

It was all becoming so real. Rafe released a shaky breath as he straightened and watched Brígh process the information he’d just thrown at her. He didn’t know how she was feeling – in all the years of their friendship, they’d never faced anything like this. But, he thought, she looked like she was in her element. Calm, commanding, and she radiated an aura of authority that no one else standing by the greenhouses could manage. Cheese stole glances at the others who had shown up – Penelope, Max, Katiya, Addy. He’d known them all since their first year together, when they were just trying to figure out how Hogwarts worked and what their place was in it. But they weren’t just playing around anymore. This wasn’t class, wasn’t theoretical, wasn’t something they could just do over if they failed. Like it or not, they’d just entered the real world and were now facing all the most horrifying parts of it. Everyone looked serious as they listened to Brígh, and Cheese felt the heaviness of everything that was going unsaid. They were here to save lives, help the Order of the Phoenix, and do everything they could to disappoint every Purifier that would likely show up. He didn’t protest as Brígh assigned him to evacuation duty, or try to argue against any of them going back into the castle that looked as if it was being slowly overtaken by the cursed fire. It was pointless to try, and…as his gaze lingered on Addy, he knew he wouldn’t want to anyway. He wasn’t a fighter, and had never done well in any sort of conflict. But Addy? She were strong, and it looked now like this was she had been born to do. He nodded at Brígh in a silent acknowledgment of what she said, not wanting to interrupt her train of thought as she worked through everything that needed to be done. Rafe still wasn’t sure what they could do, if it would even make a difference, but…he was a Hufflepuff, and above all loyal to his friends. When it came down to it, he wouldn’t leave them to face the fire alone. His face was pale and breathing uneven as he felt Addy slip her hand into his, and he turned to face her and study her expression. She looked determined, but there was a storm of emotion in her eyes. Taking a deep breath, Cheese squeezed her hand and pulled her closer for a moment – the motion meant to comfort her, but also him. Just to remind himself that they were together, at least for now, and would find each other again when it was all over. A silent promise. “On it. You can count on me,” he said, turning back to Brígh and nodding at her instructions. Evacuation. Yeah, he could handle that. There was something strange happening in the Great Hall, and that was a fact he’d been mulling over in his mind ever since first glancing at his half-developed photographs. Fighting Purifiers was out of his depth, but there were students at risk – friends he’d known for years, people he had passed in the corridors or played against in Quidditch or run into at Honeyduke’s. He was scared, of course he was scared. But, he thought – if Brígh and Addy could be brave, maybe he could be too. addilyn elara slater BRÍGH ENNIS O'DALAIGH @others [End post Cheese!]
