After this weekend Rowena's life would be changing drastically. The Ministry would be announcing her officially stepping into the Minister office. Rowena felt a mixture of emotions but none of with was fear. She was angry about recent events that had lead up to this decision. She was frustrated by the actions of her predecessor. But she was also excited for the opportunity. She'd always had high ambitions, but she'd never aimed for the position of Minister. But here she was.
She'd decided to spend the weekend in Italy, visiting her family, before officially starting her work. One last getaway before the work began. She sat in her sister's kitchen, sipping from a mug of coffee and gazing lazily out the window. Her sister-in-law was working out in the garden, while Gabriel ran about, chasing the butterflies. She couldn't help but smile as she watched. Her family had always known Rowena had a special connection with the small winged insects. As if on queue one came fluttering through the open window. Rowena extended her hand and the butterfly landed delicately on her finger. It's antenna moved back and forth, and Rowena cracked a smile. "Be patient, little one. He's still a child," she soothed softly. Clearly the butterfly was disgruntled by the toddler chasing it. After another moment it took flight and fluttered back out the window.
Rowena finished her coffee and stepped outside into the garden. Gabriel immediately came running over. "Auntie Row! I can't catch any!" He whined, sniffling miserably. Rowena knelt down, still smiling. "You have to be gentle, Gabriel. Butterflies are fragile. Let them come to you," she explained taking his hand and holding it in her own, then holding it out. "Here, wait and see." The boy went still, though he was clearly excited for what was about to happen. After a moment one of the butterflies he'd been chasing fluttered over and landing on his hand. He let out an excited squeal but managed to stay still. It lasted only a moment, before it took off and flew away. "See?" The boy giggled, thanked her, and scurried off. Rowena glanced over at her sister-in-law, Delilah. Delilah gave her a knowing look. Rowena just smiled and stood.
Of course she knew the butterfly hadn't come to Gabriel because he'd stood still. But why crush a child's simple dream of catching a butterfly?
