we won't live forever hand over the future They had a mission. They had a goal. More importantly, they had a purpose. Addy trailed behind Brígh, her heart beating violently in her chest from the physical exertion and the nervousness building in her stomach. All those years of Quidditch made running no issue, but she was still terrified of what they would find. They sprinted around the corner to the front of the Castle, and immediately, Addy noted one of the Professors on the ground. ”Brígh—wait.” Stopping suddenly, she checked the man. ”Only stunned.” And immediately, she scanned their surroundings. She didn’t note anything except students and Professors she recognized. ”Rennervate.” Addy cast, and suddenly his eyes were blinking open in confusion, but they didn’t have time to linger. He was fine.
They continued on. Addy could see that they were nearing Ravenclaw tower, and she glanced up though she shouldn’t have. As her eyes went back forward, she dug in her heels at the sight of a jet of light passing in between the space between her and Brígh. She looked right to see where it came from and saw a person in a dark cloak with their wand facing out. Addy paused, but only because she didn’t think the Purifiers dared to attack students, then again—this was Elaine they were talking about. Brígh shot a spell at the man but missed. ”Watch out for the other students!” Addy found one of the statues to take cover. Brígh was behind the one about ten feet away. This man was now eyeing the students who were coming out of the Entrance Hall. Though they were very few, this made them larger targets.
Now that his focus wasn’t trained on them, Addy stepped out from behind the statue and pointed her wand. ”Expelliarmus!” And his wand flew out of his hand. Brígh yelled another spell, and the man was knocked backward and unconscious. They looked at one another, and Addy nodded for them to continue. The courtyard was eerily empty. Whatever Cheese had noticed in the kitchens was certainly affecting the students at dinner. Addy kept her eyes peeled for more Purifiers but didn’t note any. In her opinion, that last one was far too easy to disarm, and she wondered if the Purifiers had dueling training at all.
The Entrance Hall was surprisingly empty, minus a lone hooded figure slowly walking toward The Great Hall. It couldn’t have been a Professor, or they would make themselves visible. It wasn’t a student as his robes didn’t match. Brígh yelled for him to identify himself, and he stopped and turned. His hood dropped, and there was a menacing look on his face, along with scars on one side. The man regarded them and then lazily pointed his wand—likely figuring that students would not be much of a challenge if he was to help Elaine. A stream of fire launched toward them. ”Protego!” Addy cast a shield, and the fire dissipated, but the smell of smoke lingered. It lingered far too long for her liking, and Brígh began casting counter-spells. But he deflected them, and Addy realized they would have to use more force. She had to admit the thought made her uncomfortable. Even with the training the use of such force was something that felt foreign, but this wasn’t practice anymore.
Addy had gone to the bottom of the steps while Brígh hid in the doorway to the dungeons, a light smoke passing by, but Brígh could easily spot that red hair through any smoke. They shared a glance, and Addy clenched her jaw as her face showed that she was thinking. ”Distract him.” Addy mouthed to Brígh, though before she could give further instruction, her friend had jumped out of her spot—wand pointed at the assailant, and Addy felt a panic in her chest as she knew she had to act fast or Brígh could get hurt. ”Impedimenta!” She cast over the railing, and the man seemed to infinitely pause while Brígh cast the final jinx that knocked him back. When he was down, ropes flew out of Brígh’s wand to make sure he couldn’t pick up his own wand once more.
So far, they were unscathed, and when Brígh joined her on the steps again, Addy gave her an angry look. ”When I said to distract him, I didn’t say use yourself.” Her anger was fear-driven, Brígh could have easily been hexed into oblivion by that action, and Addy didn’t know what she would’ve done had something happened to Brígh and in front of her, no less. There were more rumblings through the Castle, and the smell of smoke grew. They ran up the steps, and by the time they were a couple of floors up, they realized how empty it all was. Smoke was their only companion, along with a random student here and there. Addy and Brigh directed them to the Entrance Hall, but the thickening smoke made them realize they needed to get out of the Castle themselves. Addy coughed as she cast another powerful windy spell to clear the corridor. Even the Professor's offices were empty, and Addy had been hoping to run into Professor Zabini and enlist his help.
”I don’t think they made up this far. We should recheck the Entrance Hall and the Courtyard.” The Purifiers they had dealt with were hardly high level, and she worried if this just meant Elaine was waiting to bring in the real reinforcements. Pausing a moment, she was alone at the top of the steps with Brígh. Even the paintings around the had evacuated, though a few told them that they had only seen fire, smoke, and students. But Addy leaned slightly to place her hands on her knees and catch her breath. She could do this, she knew what she was doing, but there wasn’t a textbook in the world that could prepare you for something like this. Addy thought about the Patronus that Claire had sent. She’d forgotten to send a reply, but also, her sister had insisted she stay out of the way. The Ministry was here, but the students were still in the Castle, the one that was smoldering away before their very eyes.
A few deep breathes, and Addy stood back up. She was ready. ”We can help Eggy and Max in the Great hall.” Addy suggested, though this didn’t mean they weren’t going to keep their eyes open for more Purifiers. Brígh nodded, and Addy felt her hand on her shoulder, and she looked to the side at her. Friends for so many years, even through the arguments and fights of this past year. There was nobody Addy would have rather had at her side at such a time. Addy nodded, and they started running down the steps, careful not to trip on a trick step or themselves. But as they reached the ground floor, Addy heard a commotion. Spells were yelled and things sounded like they were breaking and exploding all at the same time. That wasn’t a good sign. They peered into the Entrance hall from the top of the steps and watched as Professor Zabini picked himself up and launched another spell at the assailant. Instinctively Addy pushed them both back into the safety of the corridor, her eyes wide. That was supposed to be their way out.
”That’s—that’s—from the Ministry.” Addy mainly was in disbelief. She recognized the man from the career fair. Head of the Department of Mysteries. What in Merlin’s name was Professor Zabini doing dueling a Department Head? Either way, it wasn’t safe for them to exit that way and Addy and Brígh were not confident that the path to the Tower entrance was clear of fire. ”Does that entrance to the village still work?” Brígh confirmed that it did, and they headed in that direction. By the time they arrived, they had realized that others had used the entrance as well, and thank Merlin they did, which meant they were safe in Honeydukes. Addy stepped in, followed by Brígh, and they made the long journey into the dark path. Addy had never been down here, so she let Brígh lead and used the time to gather her thoughts. It was a long walk, but the more time she spent thinking, the more it flew by as they walked in relative silence. Every once in a while, Brígh would look back, and Addy would give a half-hearted grin.
Had they done enough? If Professor Zabini was on the ground floor, that meant he would help handle things, and surely the Aurors had gotten into the Castle by now, right? But, had they done enough? Addy hadn’t heard from her friends in a while. Was Raphael okay and safe at the greenhouses? Her heart lurched, and she felt the tears well up in her eyes, but she shook it off. Not having eyes on him weighed on her just as much as this question of whether or not they had done enough to help and save their classmates and friends. Finally, they saw the light and climbed into the backroom of Honeydukes. Addy could hear voices, but she stopped as her eyes adjusted. ”Wait.” She muttered. They were both dirty and covered in soot and had various cuts from broken glass and who knew what else. ”I just…need a second.” Addy sat on one of the boxes and took a took in a shaky breath. She just needed a minute to compose herself.
They were safe. The village was safe, right? The voices seemed calm enough for the situation, but it was all catching up to her. She’d seen people fall right in front of her, flames coming out of the dungeons. Professor Zabini locked in an epic duel, and she knew Brígh was safe, but she didn’t know where Cheese, Eggy, or Dicky were. Where were Kat and Max and all her other friends? She also thought about her sister, in the thick of things. Addy was never one to crack under pressure, but also, there was much people didn’t see. She just needed a minute to gather herself, but it didn’t stop her eyes from filling just a little bit as she pushed all those feelings away. Somehow their job didn’t feel done.

Typically, Brígh was the leader. She was the decision maker. She was a quick thinker, a decisive force, a hurricane of confidence and recklessness. While Brígh had rallied the troops, it was time for Addy to take over. They knew Cheese would be safer out of the castle, but Addy and Brígh had this connection of the minds. Thy knew what they had to do, and that they would be best suited to do it. So Brígh followed Addy around the castle, keeping up with her best friend despite not having the same level of stamina and training. Instead, fear and adrenaline fuelled her, keeping her legs moving.
The pair wound their way through various staircases, at first not coming across anyone. But at one point, while they were hiding behind statues, Brígh shot a stunner at someone in a dark cloak. "I've only tried to stun them!" said Brígh when Addy protested, pleading for her to be careful. "If I missed, we could just wake them back up." But her words fell on deaf ears, as she and Addy were off again, wands out as they searched the corridors for those who had been forgotten. They made their way down to a surprisingly empty Entrance Hall, and skidded to a halt. A hulking in robes dark as midnight stumpted towards them. "Who are you!" said Brígh, acting first and thinking later. Not her finest moment. But the strange man whipped out his wand and started trying to hex Brígh - and she was only saved by Addy's well placed shield charm.
Just like they had practiced in their Phoenix Rising meetings, Brígh attacked back, darting from doorway to doorway. The man grunted at her, eager to finish her off. She leapt out of hiding from a doorway and Addy shouted a jinx at the man. He paused, and Brígh sent one final hex, knocking him back. The man slammed against the wall, stirring feebly. "In- incarcerous," Brígh panted, and the man was wrapped tightly in ropes. Brígh shrugged at Addy's distaste for her methods. "It worked, did it not?" she shot back with a smirk. She felt scared, but also excited.
Addy suggested they move on to the Great Hall, and though Brígh wanted to protest and insist they continue combing the castle for their fellow students, she reluctantly nodded. There was no need for her to give up her life so completely - and the acrid smoke that was unfurling in the corridors spelt certain death. It was of Aidan that Brígh thought of, returning to him and kissing him and learning about plants and herbs and teaching him English and all the good things that he had brought into her life. Brígh nodded again, this time more firmly, and followed Addy's lead.
At last, they reached the entrance hall and Professor Zabini was duelling another stranger. To Brígh, the man was vaguely familiar, but she didn't have the capacity to investigate that thought further. They had to get out. "I don't think we'll be able to reach the Great Hall. We have to trust Eggy," said Brígh, before dissolving into a fit of coughs. Addy mentioned something about the ministry and that strange man - and Brígh realised it was a colleague of her father's. "Asher Burke. Da always said he was a bit of a creep," said Brígh. Realising that escape through the main entrance was fruitless, Brígh led the way to the one-eyed witch statue on the third floor, praising whatever higher power there was that no one stopped them on their way. They surged through the corridors, almost blind in the heavy smoke. Sooner than she could have hoped, Brígh was tapping the hump of the witch and the girls made their way into the passage way, doubled over but moving as quickly as they could.
At long last, silence enveloped them. Addy and Brígh emerged into Honeydukes, their faces stained with soot. Brígh immediately made for the stairs, but Addy called her to wait. She collapsed on one of the crates, and Brígh turned to her. Under the coating of soot, Addy was ghostly pale. "Addy, you were incredible," said Brígh, kneeling before her best friend and taking her hand. "But we can't wait. We have to ensure everyone's okay, and start evacuating them from Hogsmeade. What if there are more purifiers?" said Brígh, urging Addy to her feet. Brígh knew innately that they weren't done - or maybe it was just the adrenaline doing its work. But as she led the way up the stairs, the sudden silence that befell the sweet shop alarmed her.
Brígh burst out from the back room and appraised the shop at large. A number of her fellow students were there, along with some ministry officials shepherding them. Brígh glanced at one of them. "Where is James?" was the only question on her tongue, before she was flying through the door out into the night. She wasn't sure if Addy was with her or not, but the scene before her unfolded into chaos. Spells were shooting left and right - she spotted some sixth year Slytherins arguing but paid them no mind. Whipping out her wand, Brígh joined the fray, shooting a well placed stunner at a tall, blonde Purifier. Her head whipped around wildly and she spotted a knot of second years looking terrified and lost. Of course, they'd never been to the village before. "Protego!" she shouted, as a scarred Purifier spotted them and turned to the group. "Expelliarmus!" Their wand flew from their hand and Brígh caught it deftly. She ran over to the second years, reaching out for them. "Petrificus totalus!" she cried, aiming her wand once more at the Purifier and they stopped in their tracks, as if they had turned to stone. "See that little shop there with all the bright sweets? Get in there - you will be okay and someone will take you somewhere safe," said Brígh in a rush. The knot of second years didn't hesitate - they sprinted off towards the shop and Brígh covered for them until they were safely inside.
Addy was by her side in an instant. "Cheese?" asked Brígh, turning to Addy. She thought again of Aidan, and her head turned instinctively to the MWRC. He was here - in Hogsmeade. Which meant he was in danger. Brígh thought of the moment under the trees in Hy-Brasil earlier this year, where Aidan had first kissed her. "Expecto patronum!" she shouted, and a silver mare erupted from her wand. "Warn Aidan. Tell him to get out," panted Brígh, waving her wand in the direction of the reserve. She turned to Addy, her eyes pleading. "Are they safe? Do you know?"

we won't live forever hand over the future Addy needed a moment. So much had happened, and she was trying to keep so much in her mind in terms of information and things she had studied and learned not just a few days ago. The practices with the other members of Phoenix Rising had been helpful, but this was still all so real. The balance between hurricane Brigh and Mt. Addy had been crucial to even getting this far. That man that Professor Zabini had been dueling was someone from the Ministry, and she still didn’t know what to think about that. What was going on that the Ministry and Hogwarts staff were not on the same side?
Brigh turned back around and approached Addy as she gathered herself sitting on that box. Truthfully she was doing everything she could not break down. Suddenly relaxing, let her think about many things at once. Where was Claire? Where was her boyfriend, where were the rest of their best friends? But she took a deep breath and nodded. ”Right… let's go.” As they ran up the stairs and entered the shop, Brigh began barking orders, and Addy was happy to let her lead as she scanned the room to register the faces but also prepare herself to have her best friend’s back.
She didn’t wait long before bursting outside, and Addy followed, looking in whatever opposite direction she could for full coverage. With how the paths laid out in the village, anyone could turn a corner and be a threat. Addy spotted people wearing Ministry robes dueling cloaked figures right off the bat, though some were taken down easily and some simply ran away. Others put up more of a fight, and those were the ones that Addy was concerned about. ”Expelliarmus!” Addy disarmed a cloaked man who had just turned a corner, and she followed up by binding him where he stood. They could at least help protect students she saw still running from alleyway to alleyway in search of a building to enter.
Turning back around, she saw Brigh pushing some very young students along, maybe second years, toward a building where they could be safe. Again she saw how real this was getting. A misdirected curse could take out an adult or many students. She ran and rejoined her friend when Brigh asked her a question, and instead of answering, Addy’s heart caught in her throat. ”I—I don’t know.” He had been at the greenhouses last she checked. Surely that was a safe place from the fire. While she scoped around them to make sure they weren’t just sitting ducks on this path, she saw Brigh’s Patronus run away from them. Yes, that was a good idea. It was faster than phones at this point. Addy similarly pointed her wand. She thought about that previous summer and that day she’d spent with Cheese and its unexpected ending. Without out all the denial in the way, she remembered how good she’d felt that day. ”Expecto Patronum.” The corporeal shape of a leopard appeared. ”Tell Cheese that Brigh and I are in the village and to be careful on the way here. Tell him to send a message back.” Sending a Patronus was no guarantee it would arrive.
Watching it run toward the burning Castle she turned back to Brigh. ”We need to help clear a path, or anyone coming from the grounds won’t be safe.”
