I've accepted the fight I choose to be here May 15, 2026 @edward ”Episkey.” James muttered as he wiped the fresh blood from his face. It was an unfortunate literal run-in with a hefty suit of armor in this corridor that had temporarily stopped James. He and Bianca had finally made it into the Castle, and while they helped guide students to safety, they had also ventured further and further into the Castle. The smoke was starting to thicken, and James kept walking down the hall as he popped his head into every classroom and anywhere he saw a door. A lot of students were sheltering in place, which terrified him but also he could understand why.
More students, more guidance back toward the Tower Entrance, or if the Entrance Hall was closer, he would guide them there. But, then he saw the back of a familiar head, and he squinted—his eyes were drying and burning now. ”Teddy?” James whispered to himself as he sprinted forward. ”Teddy!” No response. ”LUPIN!” At some point, he and Bianca had separated. James had gone down the Charms corridor while Bianca had gone in the other direction. It was a straight path to the Entrance Hall, from what he recalled.
But James, while confident in his abilities, felt much better seeing a familiar face. ”Merlin—the smoke is getting bad. Have you checked these classrooms up here?” James asked, slowing to a stop and peering into the door he’d just stopped in front of. No students, thankfully, but he could only hope they’d made it out.

what had started as checking the grounds for purifiers had quickly turned into trying to get students out. there hadn't been any sign of purifiers where he'd entered the burning castle so he'd moved his attention to getting students out. he knew that there would be those who froze in the castle, those who were terrified and unable to get out of the castle without some help. plus there was always the chance of purifiers being inside the castle trying to stop students from getting out. he wouldn't put anything past the group they'd been fighting for what felt like far to long.
he'd just finished helping guide some first years towards the entrance, trusting them to get out on their own merit now they knew the way and he was running back into the orange glow and the smoke filled hallways that could be housing any number of students in the classrooms. he'd cast the bubble head charm over his face to help with the smoke. it didn't help keep the smoke from his eyes and they burned with the heat and dryness but at least he could breath without problem. he heard a shout from behind him but thought nothing of it at first. he hadn't heard what it was but he assumed it had nothing to do with him. it wasn't until he heard his last name that he stopped in his tracks and turned to see who was trying to get his attention.
he couldn't say he was glad to see james coming toward him. "james!" he knew that james was capable and was more than able to help and be here and do well but there was something about seeing someone he thought of as a younger brother in such a dangerous environment that made him want to grab him and get the hell out of dodge to make sure he was safe. but he couldn't do that, they were both here with jobs to do and whatever he felt for james, he needed to shelve that so he could try and get any remaining students out. he raised his wand and tapped it against the bubble surrounding his face. "cast one!" he said loudly over the roar of noise that seemed to be growing closer with every passing second. "not yet, you get that one and i'll get this one!" he said as he watched james turn towards a door and he did the same, opening it and casting a spell to check for anyone in the room.

I've accepted the fight I choose to be here May 15, 2026 @edward The blood was beginning to dry on James’ face, but he kept trying to wipe it off with his sleeve before remembering he was a Wizard. With a quick wave, his face was cleared, but despite fixing the break, the pain lingered, just as it did with the small gash that wouldn't lose near his hairline. He supposed it wasn’t that different from playing Quidditch with his cousins and the neighborhood kids and Dustin Bainbridge accidentally close lining him one summer right off his broom. And when James had reappeared from the large bushes, he had fallen into his face and shirt was covered in blood from his nose, and yet he had a big goofy grin on his face as the adrenaline surged through his body.
Teddy tapped the area around his head in reference to the bubblehead charm he’d place, and James followed suit by casting his own. While it wasn’t a cure for the amount of smoke they were in, it did help a lot, especially with the burning in his eyes. ”Right.” James pushed the door open fully and glanced inside, he didn’t note anyone, but he jogged inside and down the aisles of tables for two. He was sure he’d attended class in here or perhaps snuck in for whatever reason. He checked the corners and places someone could hide or even under the Professor’s desk and thankfully nobody. James jogged back out to the hallway and waited for Teddy. ”Anyone?”
James signaled they should continue down the hallway toward the stairs. ”We should check the classrooms on the way out. I don’t know how long the Castle will stay standing at this rate.” It was a bit worrisome, and he thought about Bianca’s advice and the look in her eyes as she’d pushed him into the stairwell. Despite all his years working as a fully trained Hit Wizard, this was one of the most intense experiences of his life and one that hit close to home. ”Have you run into any Purifiers? Bianca and I ran into a few outside the Castle. They were trying to keep us out.” And the students inside—he thought. Again the thought gave him a worse feeling in his chest than the smoke he’d been inhaling. He just wanted to get as many students out as possible, figure out where Lily was, make sure his father was alright, and make sure Teddy got out.
They made it to the top of the staircase, and a thunderous rumble knocked many paintings off the walls. They were empty as their occupants had tried to escape, but it was a strange cascading effect. One fell, and it would hit another on the way down, bringing flames down with it. And it would hit more on the way down. It was strange to see that the Castle's charms and enchantments kept the paintings stuck on the stone walls, but the cursed fire was enough to bring them down. Still, the rumble had caused the floor to shake slightly, and James stopped as he didn’t want to be on moving stairs if the shaking got worse.
