panic on the brain world has gone insane It was some hours after midnight, and as Addy took a seat near the wall, she observed the chatter of those around her. It was idle chatter, mostly people engaging in small talk to not think about the reality of what they had all just experienced. Many faces were covered in soot, minor burns had been tended to while Addy had seen other more severe injuries from the Fiendfyre get taken away to St. Mungo’s. She couldn’t imagine that. Fortunately, she’d come out alright, but she and Brigh had faced a few of those evil faces—determined to make sure Elaine’s plan was successful.
Addy had separated herself from her friends for a moment. It had helped to see their faces and embrace them. They were safe. But sitting here felt like a sudden stop as if she’d been sprinting and suddenly hit a wall. The exhaustion came over her, and she leaned her head back and closed her eyes. A lot of students sat with their siblings and friends. Professors were walking around checking on them and speaking to parents and family members. Many were sitting just like Addy, head leaned back, but they had dozed off.
She wasn’t asleep. She had just needed to close her eyes, and Addy was trying to remember what it was like when the worst thing in her life was approaching NEWT exams and what she could have done differently in her short tenure as Quidditch Captain. She took a deep breath, coughing slightly. The smoke had been severe, and everybody had gotten their fair share of smoke inhalation. But Addy’s heart rate spiked when she heard her name. As whatever remaining adrenaline rushed through her system, she looked around to see who had called her. Her wide blue eyes landed on the furious figure of her sister. Suddenly she remembered the Patronus and forgetting to answer it. This was new. Usually Gray was on the other side of a glare like that—but Addy merely blinked in response.

THE BATTLE ENDED WITH THE DESTRUCTION OF Hogwarts, but Claire felt some level of triumph among the rubble. Having witnessed a few Purifiers being picked from the chaos, as it happened they were as unprepared for Fiendfyre as the Order had been. She found some solace in this, but it wasn't enough. Her chest was seized with a mounting panic, her hands sweating and mouth thick with the burnt flavour of soot.
"Where are the students?" Claire had asked more than one of her fellow Order members as they noted those recovered from the building, she'd even asked an Auror or two. In the beginning of the battle, Claire had sent a Patronus with a message for her sister - it had not returned. She went from face to face, snatching at torn robes and bloody faces. Any blond figure, or vaguely familiar height. She did not have the stomach to consult the cursory casualties list. Her sister was fine, she was clever and cunning. If anybody would make it out safely, it would be her. Unfortunately, Addy was also a teenager. And in Claire's experience, just a little shy of feeling invincible.
A hand pressed to her thundering chest, Claire sent out another Patronus to scope the crowds. Her eyes assaulted by coughing, and the odd cry. Healers were gathering the injured in drothes, the cracking of Apparation becoming almost perfunctory. Nearing the Three Broomsticks, Claire had resorted to yelling. "Addy!" She shouted, her voice hoarse from the smoke and her panic. "Please, please, please." She rubbed at the throb that had begun at the front of her head, fingers aching from where she kept them curled into a fist, or gripping her wand for dear life. The eerie glow of a badger weaved among the crowds, scampering from face to face and leaving bodies squinting in annoyance from the brief assault. "Sorry, I'm looking for my sister." She had to explain more than once, eyes roving above the thinning crowd.
Eventually, Claire was led towards the Three Broomsticks. She didn't notice her immediately, too busy checking those who entered in and out of the door. However, the moment Claire spotted the curled figure pressed against the stone wall, she broke out into a sprint. Addilyn looked meek, curled around her knees with her head thrown back and her eyes shut, face shadowed by soot and muck.
"Addy!" Claire gasped, sounding almost angry as her Patronus disappeared in a puff of shimmering smoke and she collapsed on the ground beside her little sister. Hands palming her face, she forced Addilyn to look at her as she checked for obvious injuries. "I have been looking everywhere for you," Claire said shrilly, her nostrils flaring as her fingers pressed indents into her cheeks. "Do you understand how- I thought- don't you know how to answer a bloody Patronus?!"

panic on the brain world has gone insane Addy had seen the wispy outline of her sister’s Patronus before it disappeared, and Claire almost collided with her. The same Patronus that Addy had forgotten to respond to, not that she had listened to any of the instructions given to her at the time. The internal struggle for self-preservation but loyalty to her best friend had momentarily collided, and she’d made her decision. While Addy couldn’t stand for anything, such an evil group stood for, and the Ministry had been on site for the fight, Brigh had decided it was to be taken into their hands as well. Addy would have followed Brigh to the edge of the Earth, and she thought through the things she had seen and experienced. With the sight of the fire in her mind, she swore she could still feel the heat.
But now Claire was here, her hands squeezing her face as Addy’s hands instinctively went up to try and pry them off. ”I’m fi—ouch—Claire—I’m fine.” Addy was mildly annoyed through her incredible exhaustion at Claire’s actions, but then she let her hands wrest on her sister’s wrists as she looked at her. They’d always looked remarkably alike with blond hair, light eyes, and pointed glare. And even now with the streaks of black that ran across their faces. Addy opened her mouth to speak but closed it again. Her throat felt tight all of a sudden. Emotions welled up in her throat, much like they had when she’d finally found Cheese after all the fighting, and she was kicking herself for ever doubting how she’d felt about him this entire past year—or even the past seven years, for that matter.
”I—I’m sorry. It was—there was so much going on. And I had to go with Brigh and…” Addy trailed off. During all that time, she knew Claire had been fighting and working. She was an Auror and a good one. Addy had forgotten to respond, and the worst probably flashed through her mind. The enormity of what had happened that day was beginning to hit Addy, the heavy weight she had avoided while adrenaline had fueled her instead. It wasn’t some hypothetical situation they had prepared for when Phoenix Rising had been resurrected and both Addy and Claire had been part of the fight. Addy let out the breath she had been holding momentarily as she blinked a few times, her eyes irritated from the smoke though watering a bit regardless. ”Thank Merlin, you’re okay.” Her hands left Claire’s wrists to wrap around her older sister.
This was real. While Claire was not new to her career and Addy knew it was dangerous, it was different seeing the type of situation that Claire had to run into as part of her work. The rubble, the fire, the bodies. Addy could still see it all, and the numbness that had overcome her before faded quickly.

THERE WASN'T A MUSCLE IN CLAIRE'S BODY without an ache or knot, but she felt none of that as she was flooded with relief. Rubble cutting at her knees on the ground below her as she grabbed and pulled at her sister without a shred of gentleness. Her hands were soot stained, knuckles scraped and bloody from nameless scuffles, but none of it mattered. Addy was alive, she was in one piece - Claire was so relieved, she felt immediately furious with it.
"Don't say that, don't say you're 'fine'." Claire's voice was hoarse and cracked as she imitated Addy's petulant dismissal. Brows creased and mouth curled down in angry disapproval. "You're not fine- nothing is fine." Claire sat back on her haunches, hands slapping hard on her thighs, her wand grabbed between thumb and pointed so that her fingers looked disjointed. "Look around you, Addilyn," she gestured at the rubble and the smoke, the distant murmuring of moaning distress as the dust settled. "It's not-" the words turned to ash in her mouth as she took a gasping breath into her chest and held it. Nothing was fine, Addy did not look fine.
Addy's explanation was stilted in the aftermath of Claire's tirade, but it was genuine. Claire felt the fight wrenched from her stubborn grip. Her shoulders lifted unnaturally with each heaving, smoke addled breath. Eyes frantically roaming over Addilyn's fine boned features. It was not a face made for a battle, young and round where it showed her young age.
Claire let herself be pulled forward, Addy's grip firm on her wrists as they pulled and then moved surely around her. Claire collapsed into her sister all at once, her wand finally falling from her grip onto the ground behind her as she wrapped her arms securely around her. One hand smoothing her tangled hair and the other digging anchoring fingers into her back. "I didn't- I'm sorry for shouting, I was just..." Claire's voice was muffled by Addilyn's hair as she admitted her greatest fear in the aftermath, "I thought you might have died." She sniffed, hiding the wet sting of her eyes in Addilyn's shoulder as she let a few traitorous tears fall from her eyes where they could not be seen and criticised. "But you're okay..." She rubbed Addilyn's back firmly, "You're okay."

panic on the brain world has gone insane Addy should have known better than to insist she was fine. It never worked with their mother either, and she’d learned that very early on in life. Nothing was fine. Nothing could be fine. It was either perfect or the exact opposite. But, Claire had a point. She surveyed the room and saw the equally soot-stained, coughing students and many other people she didn’t recognize. A few professors walked around checking on students, and she recognized the Auror robes on some younger ones. But Addy looked back as she explained. There were few people Addy would stick her neck out for, especially if not for her own benefit. Somewhere inside, she knew that, but it wasn’t something so easily discernable to one’s self.
Addy felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. With the panicked look on Claire’s face, Merlin knew what was running through her mind when Addy had failed to respond. Just like when Addy was looking for her friends after leaving the Castle. But despite the little things that Claire did that reminded her and Grey of their mother, she wasn’t. Maybe they all disagreed from time to time (or a lot of the time in some cases), but Addy supposed there was a reason her sister had been sorted into Gryffindor. ”It's ok…” Addy muttered. Something horrible happened that day, but Addy couldn’t wrap her brain around the aftermath as she could only think of how the people closest to her were safe.
