14th November 2026It was something that her therapist had suggested. A dinner once a month. Having all the family together and have some casual dinner and a catch up. Initially Ginny had been okay with the idea, for a small second even looked forward to it. Having her small family under the one roof again, playing happy family. It would be just like the old days. Right? She wished it would have been that simple. Last months dinner had not gone down well. It was Albus who had been actually outwardly suspicious of the whole thing. He had been in tune to how separate her life had been from Harry's, despite them living under the one roof. If they met their kids for coffee or on business terms, it was done separately; usually even with the kids on their own. The idea of all the Potters now getting together under one roof for a happy go lucky family dinner was simply preposterous. However, it didn't mean impossible. She had focused her efforts on trying anyway. Last month the food itself had been a flop, and after that everything else had nosedived. This time she was choosing the family's collective favourite meal and hoping things would only go onwards and upwards from there. The steaks were sitting out to get to room temperature and the roasted veg and baby potatoes were slowly cooking in the oven. Ginny was pawing a rather generous glass of red wine in the kitchen as she stood and waited for the family to descend. An anxiety had taken root in her gut and she was trying to push through it, but really she was on edge all the same. Even if she had taken off the afternoon to prepare and be as relaxed as possible about the whole affair, she was apprehensive. Slurping from her wine glass again, she moved to flick on some music for the background; if she had noise filling her brain she wouldn't have room for the unease. She had to try. IT SOUNDED ABOUT AS APPEALING AS A WEEK IN Azkaban, dinner with his 'family'. Alas, Albus was just weak enough to be manipulated by his mum's stern insistence, he'd be damned if it was him who disappointed her over a daft dinner. They'd tried a few times, it had been a persistent disaster. He reckoned she'd been watching too much muggle television, too many reruns of Come Dine With Me. Apparently, a medium rare steak fixed everything - 3/10 for company. And yet, Al was still the first person in the door every time as he toed his shoes off at the heel in the hallway. The notable lack of accompanying shoes, and the quiet giving away his promptness.
The soothing sound of his mum's music drew Albus towards the kitchen at a hesitant pace. Fingers tugging at the sleeves of his t-shirt as he rounded the corner and leaned against the frame. His mum had an apron on and a glass of red wine in her hand, back turned to him. She'd been more awake lately, he thought. More like her old self, but he dared not say such a thing out loud. He crossed the threshold and wrapped his knuckles against the counter to announce himself. "Alright?" He smiled at her genuinely, though it almost looked out of place on his serious face.
The hungry smell of roasted vegetables made his stomach rumble with hunger, but he wasn't entirely convinced. Things were fine when it was just his mum, James and Lily. Though they had been obviously unhappy, at least it felt honest. With his dad's stubborn attendance, Al felt like he was pretending. Like they were playing make believe around his mum's prized solid oak dining table. "Are you sure you want to drink that wine before you cook the steaks?" He teased his mum with raised eyebrows, ducking out of her reach as he opened the fridge and grabbed an alcoholic butterbeer out for himself. "Need a hand?" He asked, a bottle in hand as he closed the fridge and leaned against it.

Harry had the distinct impression that he wasn't exactly very welcome at these family dinners. Ginny resented him still for his actions of over a year ago, and while Harry regretted it immensely, he didn't need the consistent snide remarks. Obviously, Albus had taken her side. He always had been a mummy's boy. James, thankfully, was more amenable to his father and was stoic for the sake of it. And Lily... well, Harry could count on Lily to always stir the pot. She was his little trouble maker.
Though Harry had stopped sleeping in the dingy flat above the pub, Ginny still refused to share a bed with him. He had practically begged her to reconsider, but she was stubborn as ever. It was exhausting, always being the bad guy. And Albus never let him forget it. Ginny had hosted a few of these family meals before, all of which had dissolved into disaster and shouting matches. Somehow, Ginny always won. Harry wasn't the boy who lived anymore - just a disgraced father who had left his family in the lurch. It was immensely tiresome.
The door creaked as it always did, stable in the turmoil of the Potter family as Harry entered his home. His home. And Ginny had kicked him out. A dull throb of anger pulsed in his head as his brow crumpled in frustration. He closed the door behind him, hanging his cloak on the hook by the door, taking note of Albus' trainers in the corner. So, he would have to face the two of them alone. Naturally.
Harry followed the sound of conversation to the kitchen and found his wife and youngest son. "Alright?" he asked, crossing the kitchen without making eye contact with either of them. He made a beeline for the bottle of wine Ginny had already opened, pouring himself a glass with slightly shaking hands. He looked around at the pair of them, his face pale. "I er - I've got to check something in my office," said Harry suddenly, slinking out of the kitchen and cursing the awkwardness that still lingered within his family.

Even with the soft music playing, she had heard the door open and close gently, and she knew at once who had entered. She had spent long enough with her children to know how they moved. Smiling to herself, she listened in silence, waiting for Albus to make an entrance to the kitchen. Once he announced himself, she looked up and let her smile widen. Setting the glass down haphazardly she sprung forward to pull him into a hug. "Oh Albie, I'm so glad you were able to come" Holding on to him for a few more seconds than probably socially acceptable for a mother to hug her child, she smiled in is ear. Clinging to him was comforting. He had always been her softest child in a way, the one easiest to love and to receive little signs of endearment from. Squeezing him again one final time before she stepped back she laughed quietly. "It's only my first glass. I'll be okay to cook don't worry. I'm okay for help though, all I have to do is actually cook the steaks on the pan. But it's too early. I'll wait till everyone arrives first." Giving him another warm and genuine smile, it was only a few seconds before her attention was pulled away; someone else was coming in the door. Pausing to listen, she lifted the glass to her lips again and readied herself. It was Harry. As he mirrored her son's inquiry, she gave him a small nod, unsure of what to actually say. No she wasn't alright, she was still on edge. More than ever now Harry was here. The subject of the Dinner, essentially. "Hi Harry" She eventually uttered in a small voice, nodding again. Hid lack of eye contact said it all for Ginny, she knew him too well. He was just as uncomfortable as she was. But she knew it was just something they had to get over, however long it would take. It seemed she could handle it a little better than he could though. She watched him shakingly pour himself some wine and disappear upstairs, before she turned to Albus with a nod. "Right..." Rolling her eyes she took another sup of her wine and then forced another small smile "Anyway, How are you? What have you been up to?"

lets play pretend let's act like it comes naturally November 14, 2026 Potters It was easy to smile and laugh when sitting and discussing different ways James could transfigure pieces of Albus’ desk at the Ministry of Magic with Lily on a regular day when he’d visit his family home. But a forced family dinner did nothing to brighten James’ mood. It had been months since Hogwarts had fallen, and though his injuries, magical and otherwise, had healed, the memory weighed heavily on his shoulders. When his mother had announced to her children that this would be a new common occurrence, James remembered looking to the side at Albus, who also shared the same apprehension. While James had decided to welcome back his father rather than Albus, it didn’t mean he was blind to the new normal of his family.
James opened the door and closed it behind him, removing his jacket to place on the hook and kick off his shoes. Albus was here, but he didn’t know if Harry or Lily were yet. Naturally, he assumed Lily would be unless she was working in their Uncle’s shop that day. The Summer had passed with his mother asking him to come by for a family dinner for whoever’s birthday it was. And the one thing that he and his brother would always agree on is that they would not be the ones to let their mother down. The past years had been spent holding the family together by their fingertips as if one wrong move would let everything fall. James cleared his throat and walked toward the kitchen, where he heard voices.
”Hello?” James stuck his head through the doorway before walking in, a half-grin on his face as he went over to greet his mother. Sometime during his third or fourth year, he’d passed his mother in height and now stood almost an entire foot taller. Not that he’d ever underestimated her to knock him down to her level if he challenged her. ”Hi Mum.” And he took a step to nod to his brother. ”Al.” And he looked around at the wine and mostly prepped dinner. ”Dad and Lily here?” James spent a good amount of time at the pub, a habit from when the Order was active, but after Elaine’s fall, the organization had since disbanded. But, he would go visit his father or sit at the bar and chat with Yas, now that he had that downtime.
But the whole family still seemed busy. Albus was an Auror now, and James was continuing his work as a Hit Wizard, which he’d found he’d thrown himself into so he didn’t have to think about seeing his fractured family felt. Harry and Ginny were basically a fairytale to some, but it was anything but. And the more James fought that resentment of Harry’s actions against the need he felt to have his father in his life, the more he retreated and wore his playful grin as a mask. He shook the thought from his mind, hoping that tonight maybe they could at least make it to the end of the main course before arguing.

THE ENTHUSIASM WAS SUSPECT, BUT ALBUS still reciprocated when his mum wrapped her arms around him. She looked pleased, in her element as she floated around the kitchen with a cheerful smile on her face. It was perhaps the nicest part of the disastrous dinners - she really, truly tried. It made Albus feel a little ashamed for how miserable he was about the whole ordeal. "Wouldn't miss it," He muttered, giving her thin smile of effort before he grabbed a butterbeer.
Recently, his mum looked a lot better. Albus didn't want to think it was because his dad was home, but he couldn't deny that something had changed in the last few months. "I believe you," He said with a teasing dubiousness to his tone. She was a flutter of energy, and Albus let his eyes roam around the kitchen. She was heinously organised, the plates stacked and the vegetables glazed. A gravy bubbling on the back burner and the wine chilling her famous 'first' glass. It beat a burned casserole and a screaming match between Albus and James, recalling when they'd been the delegated cooks for the abandoned Potter household.
Albus heard the front door open before he seen who it was. Leaning his head back to peek through the kitchen door and out through the hallway. He just seen the back of a dark messy head, wished desperately that it would be James, and was disappointed. Albus grabbed a handful of plates at his mum's delicate nod, the tension blanketing the room at once. His dad had a way of stealing all the air out of every room he entered. Albus was choking on it as he dropped his chin, one hand gripping his bottle neck, the other juggling dinner plates.
He couldn't help staring at his dad's back as he poured his wine, hating him quietly for giving the booze more attention than his son and wife. Even his greeting seemed reluctant. It was like he blamed them for the tension he had brought into the room upon arrival - it had been fine without him. Albus briefly considered throwing the plates, or the bottle, at his back. Unfortunately, his dad filled his glass and Albus had to drop his chin and immediately pretend he hadn't been staring. The plates clattered together as he arranged them against his chest, clearing his throat and looking pathetically theatrical as he pointedly turned his back.
Harry did not take the tension with him when he left the room, it lingered like a bad smell as Albus placed the plates back down and took a pull from his butterbeer instead. When he swallowed, his mum was looking at him expectantly. She filled the ensuing silence with stubborn chatter, and Albus was once again reminded of his mum's unflinching determination. Albus let the silence stretch between his mum's question, as he hadn't quite heard her, tongue in cheek before he gestured to the door his dad just fled through, "So we're just pretending that... didn't happen, or?"
He was interrupted by the front door being opened once again. Before his mum could reply, or his dad could blow the windows out with his exceptional awkwardness, another body entered the Potter home. Albus heard James before he even opened his mouth, a great clattering of heavy feet and huffing breath. He rolled his eyes and shook his head, effectively dismissing his own question before his brother blew into the room and called him a drama queen for saying what they were all thinking. He set his bottle down and gathered the plates once again in earnest.
James's towering figure bounded into the room and redirected their mum's attention for a few moments, he asked after their dad and Lily immediately. Albus snorted derisively in reply - yes their dad had arrived, but at what cost? The plates knocked together noisily as he removed himself from the kitchen's main area to very gracelessly arrange the plates. He briefly considered leaving his dad without a plate, but then he pictured his mum's cheery smile being replaced by something far more sinister and placed his plate upside down instead. He hated family dinner.

Exasperatedly she looked at Albus and shrugged. "I just-" Cutting herself off she shook her head again, brushing it off. "Yeah I guess we will I suppose.." Giving him a half defeated smile she sipped from her wine. Having them under the same roof was something right? As Albus passed by with plates she touched his arm in a silent but tender sign of endearment. As a mother you weren't meant to play favourites, and she really tried not to. But Albie had a way of knowing what she was thinking without her having to say it, for some reason her ultimate ally, even when the kids were little and they had paired off for family game nights. Albus looked like his father obviously, but his personality and inner workings was moreso like her. His undying loyalties to her helped somewhat too of course. She didn't have a favourite, but if she had to, Albus probably came out on top. Setting her glass down in safety, she now turned her attention to James and held her arms out to give him a welcoming hug. Although he was the hardier of her sons, she still craved his affections just as much as she did Albus'. "Hi Darling." Stepping back she gave James another small smile "Lily is finishing up a shift I think and then she'll be up in a bit. Your dad is..." Trailing off, her gaze shifted towards the stairs. " Well he's here. He arrived and went upstairs. Said something about checking something in the office." She tried to shrug it off again. It had bothered her, of course, but it was easier to pretend it hadn't and focus elsewhere. "How are you love? Will you have something to drink?" With a small tilt of her head she motioned to the fridge. "I got the nice beer you like. Anyway, I have the potatoes and veg in the oven. The ice cream is chilling in the freezer and the steaks are settling to room temperature. I'll cook them once we're just about ready to sit down I think. When Lily gets here" Repeating the plan to her older son, she hoped for some form of reassurance. With an easy movement she moved to refill her glass from the bottle of red she had been drinking. For a moment she was lost in thought. Had Harry really something to check upstairs, or had he just retreated there as a way to escape for a bit before he had to face them all for dinner. He was good at escaping, they had established that, but surely he would want to spend some time with his family; even if it was tense as anything right at that moment. "Anyway" She called out to nobody in particular, forcing herself to pull away from those thoughts. "I hope you're all hungry. I have plenty of food. And some of the nice cheeses and meats for after to pick at while we...." Pausing for a moment she searched for an end to that answer, what would they do after dinner? They'd hardly play cards, or monopoly like they used to. But maybe they'd at least sit around and have a drink or something. "Well, whatever works" She cut off the end of her own sentence and rounded it off awkwardly. Albus Severus Potter james sirius potter HARRY JAMES POTTER lily luna potter

▲ The monthly dinner that the Potter family seemed to be making a habit of now that everyone was out of school and in the working world was basically everything Lily could have hoped for. There seemed to be this mutual acknowledgment within the house that they were supposed to placate one another and pretend everything was hunky-dory. Now obviously that wasn’t true, otherwise a once per month dinner would have been more of a weekly thing. She felt like sometimes the rest of her family danced around the problems at hand and they acted like it was some great taboo to even breathe about it in front of her. She wasn’t stupid, despite some of the comments that had been made because of her repeat year at Hogwarts. If anything, that ended up benefitting her more than being a hindrance. Nothing had been right between her parents since the Great Return (as she called her dad’s reappearance in her head), though anything that may have came before was definitely not something she would have noticed. Regardless, the monthly dinners that had begun following her rather abrupt finish at Hogwarts were nice. Even under the current circumstances, any sort of family get together was fine with her. With how busy James and Al were these days, forcing them to sit down for the one night was well worth it. Her own job had its own drawbacks, though business had slowed down the second all the students were shipped off all over the world. She couldn’t really account for what Diagon Alley looked like normally during the fall term since she had always been at Hogwarts, but according to Uncle George it was a lot less business than he had ever seen before. That didn’t exactly stop them from having fun at work though, and the last two months had been spent in a crazy phase of research and development. Apparently her uncle had been looking for this sort of opportunity for years now but had always been too busy to do so. Lily, supposedly, was the perfect partner in crime to help test these sorts of new items out. Like most WWW products, they were rooted in unsuspecting products like candy or household items. Self-slapping spatulas were an updated version of the trick wands, though more often than not they simply slammed down on whatever food was being cooked underneath them. Lily had spent the majority of the morning in employee kitchen cooking eggs, laughing hysterically every time her spatula snaked its way down to obliterate the scrambled eggs in the frying pan. The usual result was a spray of egg everywhere, but her favorite was whenever the spatula got too close to an un-cracked egg. Instant crushing. That was the best way to describe it, because one second there would be a perfectly good egg sitting on the counter, and then the next there was a pool of dribbling yolk and shattered shell. But since the spatulas had such an obvious action to them, the trick feature was even better. If someone happened to try and cast a counter-charm on it, the self-slapping function would stop. Any further attempt to use it like a regular spatula would then lead to the infamous trick wand, where rubber chickens, screwdrivers, or her favorite, the pair of men’s boxer briefs. Repurposing old gags as a secret under new ones was perfect and the unexpectedness of it was what made it so effective. Of course that wasn’t the only new product, and the rest of the day had been spent test launching the newest line of fireworks. These were a lot more practical in their uses and weren’t nearly as dangerous as the ones of yore, which were sometimes brought up during holiday dinners with the whole family. The firecrackers aptly named the Popcorn Chicken seemed simple enough, until they exploded into a series of bouncing, fiery chicken shapes, which then scattered like a flock of spooked chickens would. Lily accidentally set one string off in the center of the store after being told to do it in the back alley where fireworks were usually tested, and two entire rows of products were knocked over in the process. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence in the store, but when said fallen product also started to activate because the firecracker chickens acted like real, dumb chickens and pecked everything in sight - it then became a problem. Lily’s first instinct, which wasn’t a good one at all, was to dive at the closest chicken to try and wrangle it. When her hands obviously went through it, the enchanted sparks ignited into her face, immediately leaving it black with soot and the side of her head looking like she had just stuck it out the window of a speeding vehicle. Her own eruption of laughter from her idiocy caused the remaining chickens to explode in unison, leaving her in a haze of sparkling chicken parts. Uncle George said an alternate name could be Kentucky Firecracker Chicken, a twist on the name of a similarly named muggle fast-food chain. Because of her accidental mess, the remainder of the day was spent putting things back in order, which was anything but easy when it came to WWW products. Things had a habit of slithering off or disappearing, and locating everything in the maze of a store was nigh impossible. It was fine because it wasn’t like there was still a box of missing Pygmy Puffs from earlier in the week somewhere within the chaos. They would be fine though. They were tenacious little furballs and would eventually get tired of snacking on Ton-Tongue Toffee and U-No-Poo. It was a creative combo but made them easy to find once they ate enough. Unfortunately. With the end of the day nearing and the store back in order, Lily was cut loose and slowly made her way back home, having already forgotten that there was a rough timeline for when she was supposed to be there for this dinner. First came a quick stop to Fortescue’s for a cone of the muggleborn favorite flavor, pumpkin spiced latte, which came with decretive candied leaves and sugar pumpkins. A very unimpressed Cara Bainbridge had begrudgingly handed over the ice cream, and Lily found it hilarious how her neighbor tried to tell her about the wacky hairdo without actually making a scene of it. She was always so serious! Lily liked her explosive new hairstyle and had no intentions in fixing it until she was told at least three times by her mum when she got home. If anything, it’s almost permanent state of sticking backwards would keep it out of her dinner later. Once her ice cream was stuffed into her body in a mere couple of seconds, she found that it was a lot later than she had intended to be in Diagon Alley. Her newly acquired apparation license was perfect for this sort of thing! A surprise to even herself, she had flawlessly passed a month earlier. This absolutely beat having to take the fireplace in the store or going to one of the public ones to use floo powder. She hated crashing into the family fireplace every evening. Being able to apparate wherever her heart desired was fantastic and somehow her brain could always focus on where she wanted to go. Why it couldn’t do that for everything else in her life was bound to remain a mystery forever, but she’d take this one victory with magic. A quick thought of the family home and front door and pop! The following crack and instant pain in her forehead as she crashed headfirst into the door wasn’t entirely uncommon, as sometimes she landed on the loose brick and toppled forward. Today was one of those days apparently. “GUESS WHO!” Lily bellowed in an earsplitting sing-songy scream as she entered the house, slamming the door behind her so hard that it actually made her jump. Her enthusiasm was a bit too much for it still. Kicking her shoes off into the pile that sat just inside, she counted three pairs of large feet, meaning everyone was already here. Pounding towards the kitchen where she assumed the rest of the family would be, her eyes caught Al first, setting plates at the table. That was perfect! “Catch!” she yelled at him, throwing one of the prototype self-slapping spatulas at him without looking. She didn’t need to stick around to see if he would dare to pick it up, because she’d hear it from the other end of the house. Hopefully it would slap him in the face. The mere thought of it already had her holding back a fit of giggles as she slid into the kitchen and dropped her bag into the middle of the floor. “Where’s dad?” she asked, looking between her brothers and mum. She’d seen his shoes, clearly he was lurking around here somewhere. Potters ● 1,494 ● Take Care of Yourself by Maisie Peters MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Like the coward he was, Harry scuttled away to his office instead of facing his wife and son. They had glared daggers at him - or had that been his imagination? Either way, Harry was more keen to face Ginny and Albus with the buffer of James and Lily. Admittedly, Harry did not like feeling like a coward. But it stemmed from just how exhausted he was from being iced out for eleven months. He’d tried apologising so many different ways, and somehow it wasn’t enough. If they hadn’t destroyed all of the time turners all those years ago, maybe Harry would have gone back in time and kept himself from leaving. But what sort of consequences would that small change make?
Harry stood in his office with nothing really to do. He heard the door slam shut not long later, which meant one of his friendlier children had arrived. Harry steeled himself, and left his office. He turned a corner and surveyed quite a different scene in the kitchen as before. Lily and James both had arrived, and Lily looked rather like she’d stuck her head out a car window going top speed. ”Just here,” replied Harry with a grin. He wrapped an arm around his only daughter. ”Your hair suits you,” he added after a moment. He locked eyes with James, and nodded. Though Harry had always spoilt Lily, James and Harry had always had quite a special bond. They were more alike than he’d have liked to admit - quite as headstrong and brave. Without having to speak, Harry conveyed his lingering discomfort. James would understand his look.
After a long moment, Harry’s gaze flickered back to Ginny. ”Gin, anything I can do to help?” asked Harry tentatively, employing his old nickname for her. Hopefully, this dinner would go better than previous ones. At least Lily looked excited by the prospect of it all. And Al looked positively miserable, so surely Harry would be able to enjoy himself. He sighed deeply. ”Reckon I’m going to have to nip out and get a few more bottles of wine?” he asked in an attempt to lighten the mood that had settled heavily upon his reappearance in the room.

lets play pretend let's act like it comes naturally November 14, 2026 Potters James noted Albus’ non-verbal remark and gave him a side-eye. That was the answer to at least one of his questions, but his mother further clarified. He grinned while giving his mother a welcoming hug. James could see that she was trying, and nothing made him happier than seeing all of the five of them sitting down together like the happy family they once were. But he also remembered what it was like when they all thought Harry was dead. The important thing was that his father was not dead, and he was trying. The methods he had utilized were definitely not the best or maybe well thought out, but James tried to focus on how it could have gone worse.
He gave a slight grunt and nod of his head to acknowledge. Then again, he didn’t blame his father for going straight to a safe place rather than lingering in the kitchen with their mother and Albus alone. ”Just tired from work.” His grin came easily, but there was that exhaustion in his eyes. The aftermath of Hogwarts burning down and capturing Purifiers gave them all hope that perhaps that was all over for good. No Elaine coming back from the dead again and taking another one of his family members. Aurors investigated while Hit Wizards had boots on the ground to try and round up more from revealed safe houses. ”Sounds excellent.” The thought of food suddenly reminded him that he was starving, but in the meantime, he went to the fridge to grab a beer, using a bottle opener from the drawer to free the top.
James popped his into the dining room and watched Albus awkwardly set the table. It made him roll his eyes slightly. ”They didn’t teach you that in Auror training?” James teased, noting one plate was upside down. Without much of a word, he walked over and set it facing upright. While it was funny, James knew this wasn’t the time—plus, he was sure it might send both of his parents each down another bottle of wine. But, before he could comment, he heard a loud noise come from the front of the house. It was like a wince and a reaction as he stopped himself from pulling out his wand, but fortunately, he hadn’t since it was just Lily making a grand entrance. A fiery ball of energy, aka Lily, came into the dining room and threw something at Albus. James drank a large amount of beer just as their father walked into the room.
Harry looked at him, and James tried to give him a reassuring grin before looking back at Lily. ”I see you’ve decided to adopt the official Potter hairstyle, Lils.” James walked over and inspected her interesting hairstyle as his free hand mussed up his own messy dark hair. It didn’t matter what he did or what his mother had even tried when he was a boy. It did what it wanted. ”What were you and Uncle George up to today?” Lily’s energy was always refreshing, especially at these family dinner things.

THE TENTATIVE TOUCH OF HIS MUM'S HAND ON Albus's arm as he passed would illicit guilt later. She was trying, it said, so he should, too. His mum always looked like she understood him, even when he was being utterly unreasonable. The plates felt heavier as he laid them out, spiteful in his arrangement as he intended to place himself as far away from his dad as possible. James's voice interrupted his train of thought snidely, prompting Al to turn and check his mum's back was turned before he gave him the middle finger and turned back. He had barely a moment to finish placing the plates when Lily's great big voice filled every space in the Potter home, echoing off the walls. It beat the tense silence.
Turning, Albus had a criticism about volume on the tip of his tongue when he spied her scorched head. "Wh-" Albus spluttered, abandoning the dining table entirely to turn and face her. He hadn't even a moment to finish his sentence when she threw something at him, he caught it mid-air, but it morphed in his hand and flew at his face suddenly. Rookie mistake, never catch anything from Lily Potter. The spatula slapped him erratically across both cheeks, with an almost animated intensity. His face screwed as he grappled with the handle, cheeks slapped numb.
"Lily- you're touched in the head!" He gasped when the slapping ceased, dropping the thing on the ground where it stilled ominously, waiting for its next victim. He was red faced, both from anger and the assault. Stomping after her and huffing angrily, though he knew it was pointless as she'd surely howl with laughter. He cuffed her scorched head as he passed her, shoving the shorn hair as she spoke cheerfully with the rest of the family in the kitchen. "Stop bringing your stupid Wheezes rubbish home," He told her sternly, though it was difficult to uphold with a spatula shaped welt on both of his cheeks.
Albus sulked near the fridge, well out of Lily's reach as their dad finally graced them with his presence once more. All friendly smiles and effort now that it was not just himself and his mum. This only bothered him all the more, as if he wasn't worth the effort without the others. This isolation was partly his fault, but Albus failed to think of it that way in the moment. He preferred to blame his father. "Don't lie to her," He commented meanly. "It looks terrible, she looks like an extra from Doctor Who." He screwed his face at her, still smarting from the slapping spatula.

Ginny had almost been expecting the crash that her only daughter had arrived with. She was not surprised or shocked when she landed on the front door with a bang, nor did she raise an eyebrow at the new way Lily's hair stood on end like she had stuck her finger in a Muggle electrical socket. With a tight smile she had rolled her eyes and given her daughter a small kiss on the cheek as she bounded pass as a welcome. "Hi Lils, nice hair. Work was okay?"
Giving Harry a small smirk as she chose that moment to re-enter the downstairs of the family home, she half rolled her eyes. "Well, I wouldn't go that far. But it's interesting anyway.." Watching her daughter again she gave an exasperated sigh. There was no taming her really, but in a way Ginny was proud. Although Lily was wild, it was moreso a case of the apple not falling all that far from the tree she supposed. She wasn't unlike her mother, it was simply a case that Ginny had become slightly more subdued with age, or else she was better at covering it up at least. She had been slightly far away thinking about it as Harry addressed her by the nickname he had once loved calling her. It had set something off inside her, although she didn't dislike it, she wasn't entirely sure. It all felt a bit odd. "Er, no. I guess I went a little overboard and may have bought more than I ever do even for Christmas" With a slightly guilty look se shrugged at her husband, before being pulled away to a war that was threatening to kick off between her children. With a sigh, she looked between the three of them. It often went like this, Lily and James against Albus. The bookends playacting and having a go at the middle child. A stern look between them all was a warning to cut it out without her even having to say it. Even though James hadn't really done much, she knew when Lily and Albus got going he would likely join in too so she had to cut this off before it began.# "Are we ready for dinner?" She pointedly asked. Raising an eyebrow, looking between them all now she smiled with a strained look "Shall I put the steaks on now, or?"

▲ Ignoring Albus was one of the easiest things in the world. His whining was incessant and could be tuned out in an instant if she chose to do so. Being subjected to his harsh criticisms and lack of enjoyment in his life was super not cool, so ignoring him was the best option. Even if she had started it tonight with the self-slapping spatula. That was deserved. Probably. And if not, it paid it forward for his disgust over her hair. Not like it was her fault that today was a fireworks testing day. This sort of thing always happened when they tried to get a rough estimate on strength and firepower for them. “Thanks!” she yelled at her dad before giving him a solid smack in the center of the back as a greeting, before turning to James to answer his question. “Super top secret fireworks project. They’re these firecrackers that blow up into smaller ones, and then look like chickens pecking at the ground.” Lily had blurted it all out before realizing that she had given it all away in one go in her excitement. She covered her mouth quickly, looking immediately at Albus, knowing he was going to make some snarky comment about it. “Pretend you didn’t hear that. And don’t tell anyone. Or do. Maybe that’ll drum up more sales for Christmas.” She wanted to add that Albus could tell all of his nonexistent friends about it, but that would only incite acts of violence and probably ruin dinner. Her stomach won out in that decision, because she was unbelievably hungry after talking about Popcorn Chicken firecrackers all day. “Please!” she called out to her mum at the possibility of food getting started. Lily half-expected them to already be sitting down when she got home, but apparently they’d been waiting. Quickly locating her bag that she had tossed, she stuck her tongue out at Albus as she ran off towards the stairs to head up to her room. Even though she sort of liked the firework blasted look of her hair, it was bound to be distracting at dinner. Taking too many glares from Al would keep that scowl on his face permanently and she didn’t want that! “Call when it’s ready!” Lily screamed down as she hit the landing to the second floor and tried to slide across the floor on her socks. She stopped several feet away from her bedroom door and loudly hopped the rest of the way in. First order of business was the hair! Potters ● 423 ● Yggdrasill by SKALD MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Harry shot a glance at Albus. "Don't be rude, Al," said Harry, his green eyes intense on the pair that so fully matched his own. No matter how many times he tried, he and Albus would simply never see eye to eye. Gone were the days where they could tell each other stories, throw a quaffle around, and watch silly old films together. Something had changed within Al, and Harry didn't know when or how. But it had separated them across a vast divide, and still Harry couldn't cross it.
When Albus had gotten cruel, Harry didn't know. For so long he had been misunderstood, but not outright mean. His comment threw Harry, and though it wasn't the worst thing he could come up with, Harry knew it was but the tip of the iceberg. He shot a sidelong glance at Ginny, almost pleading. Tonight, please could they just get along? Shifting slightly, Harry took a sip of his drink. "Dudley used to love Doctor Who. Honestly I'm not sure he understood the premise, but he was a massive fan of cybermen," said Harry. He caught his wife's gaze once more, and returned the small smile she shot him. Perhaps it wouldn't be so awful a night.
"Yeah, let's get to it then. Gin, how can I help?" asked Harry, moving so he was by her side. He glanced around at his children, who broke off as usual, retreating their separate ways. Harry put a gentle hand on his wife's shoulder, pausing her for just a moment. He met her warm brown gaze, her eyes like molten chocolate. Harry's breath caught, and even though they had been together for so many years, she never ceased to amaze him. "I appreciate the work you've put into this. How have you been?" asked Harry in a low voice.

lets play pretend let's act like it comes naturally November 14, 2026 Potters If James had been drinking anything, he would have happily inhaled it into his lungs as he immediately laughed. Lily had thrown something at Albus, and immediately, this thing—which James quickly realized was a spatula began to attack his brother. Al’s hand seemed to grip harder around the handle as the top made contact with his face several times. James probably should have helped him, but he could barely breathe in between laughs. When it fell to the floor, Albus stomped away, and James walked up to the item on the floor, not touching it, but he pulled out his wand and muttered a spell his Uncle had taught him.
He was almost positive it wouldn’t slap him, and tentatively he picked it up, and it seemed the spell worked. James wouldn’t have put it past his Uncle George to tell him some random combination of words, and then James fall into the same trap that his brother had. Following everyone back into the kitchen, he twirled the spatula between his fingers. ”You forgot something, Al.” James grinned mischievously as he leaned against the door frame. Before making another comment about Auror training again, his father finally joined them. They were all home now and James wondered if this dinner would be just like all the rest.
The spatula had gotten a good laugh, but James was intrigued by Lily’s answer about a ‘super secret fireworks project’. He decided he would ask more about it at dinner instead of focusing on the new conversation his father was attempting with Albus. ”What’s Doctor Who?” It sounded familiar, but James had trouble keeping track of these muggle shows that his siblings and cousins sometimes watched. But he wondered if Yas had mentioned it at one point, but he didn’t remember. Typically when it came to muggle things, he asked either Yas or Harper. Sometimes his father would know. ”Need some help with your face, Al?” James offered loudly, still noting the marks left behind by the spatula.
