July 2026
Phoebe woke up late that morning. She sat up in her bed and stretched long and hard. Man she had had a good night's sleep. The sun shone brightly through her open window. The warmth filled her with energy. After a short time staying in bed, Phoebe slipped out, fitting on her unicorn slippers and moving through the house. She wasn’t surprised that no one else was there. Both parents were out, maybe working, or running errands. That didn’t matter. She also noticed that all the siblings were out as well. She didn’t mind. Sure it was a little lonely, but she knew exactly what would help brighten her mood. It was also the perfect thing to welcome everyone back home. Pulling out butter, it would need to be best if they were not cold. It being morning, Phoebe made herself a simple breakfast, a couple over easy fried eggs on top of some sourdough bread. Once done, she got ready for the day, changing from her pajamas into clothes that were more suited for the day, albeit lounging around the house. Still, no one seemed to be around. Well that didn’t matter. She had a plan, and having the house to herself only meant that there was no one to stop her. It didn’t take long for the girl to get into the kitchen, and start to pull out everything she needed. Taking out the eggs was important. It was best if they were room temperature for baking. Then she started up the oven. It would be up to temp before she was finished making her gooey concoction.
By this time, the butter was softer now, so she put the correct amount into a large bowl and began to mix it. After she was satisfied with the consistency, she started to add the sugars. This recipe she knew by heart, it called for both white and light brown sugar. Baking wasn’t for those trying to eat healthy after all. With a dash of vanilla extract added, she began to once again mix. It was vital that they were well combined. There couldn’t be any lumps. Lumpy butter was unpleasant to eat, and lumps of sugar detracted from the overall mixture that she was creating. The girl mixed with great care, pouring her love into every motion. Once she was satisfied, she added the eggs that were no longer cold to the touch. Skillfully cracking them all in she again mixed the buttery mixture. The contents of the bowl gaining a wet shine to it. Now careful not to over mix anything, it was time for her to add in the dry ingredients. The flour, baking soda and salt were added gradually, mixing in between each time they were added. Careful that everything was well combined, stopping as soon as every was combined, she stopped Now for the best part. The little witch poured in the small kiss shaped pieces into the yellow cream like mixture. The glorious little chocolate pieces promised a melty change to the mixture once it was cooked. The sweet chips were mixed in thoroughly. She then pulled out some sheet pans and after spraying it lightly, she placed down some parchment paper. Phoebe then lightly sprayed everything again. One could never be too careful.
The girl dolloped good sizes of the mixture onto the sheets and placed them into the oven. Now the worst part. The waiting. Luckily, this recipe didn’t leave lots of time to sit. Half way through the flipped the sheets, for an even cook. As they continued to bake, she took a few more sheet pans and repeated the process of preparing and dropping the mixture. As if it was a well choreographed dance. She removed the two sheets from the oven, placing the new ones in. Slamming the pans onto the counter the puffed up creations flattened. She left them there for a few minutes, then moved them onto some cooling racks. Taking a quick break, the girl took a spoon, taking some batter out and sticking it directly into her mouth. It almost tasted as good as the completed product. But now wasn’t the time to doddle. She continued her process until the bowl only had small bits left. Now those weren’t going to go to waste, Phoebe wouldn’t let it. She grabbed a spatula and went to town. Scraping the sides of the bowl clean and licking up the rest while she waited for the final batch to come out.
By this time, the house was filled with the sweet smell of baked goods. The simple, memorized mixture had left the building smelling phenomenal. She pulled the final sheet out, hitting it down on the counter she finally heard the door open. Someone had walked in, and verbally questioned what had happened here. It wasn’t hard to figure out that the youngest triplet had been left to her own devices again. When asked, Phoebe gave a bright, ear to ear smile ”I made cookies! Want some?” She said as she took a bite of a freshly out of the oven, ooey gooey cookie. The molten chocolate just cool enough to not burn one’s mouth. This was clearly her calling. Baking made her happy. And better yet, sharing her sweets made her more than happy.
