Si tried to fight down a stab of disappointment as Rob wouldn’t meet her eyes, so she glanced away and tried to pretend she hadn’t seen it. Instead she polished off the rest of her drink – a little bit of self-soothing, as it were – and focused on the exchange of horror stories about the first batches of Aware Wolf. Merlin, it was actually a miracle that Rob and Rhys were still standing after that. And of the many woes they found themselves in, well – they couldn’t blame that on the potion. Si rolled her eyes as Rob wondered about what exactly they could get other people to do for them, although she let Rhys take the lead on squashing the ‘Sir Rob’ idea before it could get too far. “I think you’d have to invent an entirely different potion to get people to do that. One that involves heavy hallucinations,” Si decided.
She failed to hide a wince at the mention of Rob’s complicated family dynamics. She’d heard about Jitske from Heleen long before Rob had ever mentioned her, and the competition was fierce there. Sienna didn’t have any of her own experience to fall back on there – she was an only child, and her father didn’t know anything about the magical world so everything sounded impressive to him. Rhys’s suggestion was fair, but Si knew it wouldn’t stand. No, someone would go and look up the bylaws and then Rob would be hearing about it until he died (and then come back as a ghost to hear it all over again). So instead she seized on his last words and replied in a matter-of-fact tone, “As she should. Everyone knows I’m the lovable one here.”
Not strictly true, if her two friends’ (she used the word somewhat loosely here) records with women was anything to go by, but she could pretend at least. When the waitress stopped by again, Si didn’t stop to check what was in her glass before downing half the thing in one go. A thought of something had flit across her mind when she’d glanced at Rob earlier, and she was having a hell of a time forgetting it. Or the way he almost studiously avoided making eye contact with her. So instead Si turned to Rhys and said breezily, “You’re invited to the actual ceremony, of course. I’m sure there will be plenty of pomp and circumstance when they give us the award and go on and on about our fabulous contribution to society. But I'm sure there'll at least be a bar there.”
