The truth fell as easily off his tongue as lies did. As simple as commenting that a smile suited Rose, it was not a fallacy. She thanked Damian and he wondered if it was more out of habit than a genuine reaction. His eyes narrowed into slits, just for a moment, before he returned his attention to wine. "No. Think I'll stick to biting remarks. Have you seen the new hair on Rivera? Long locks suited her vigilante look," said Damian with a smirk.
Leaning forward, the moment became more intense and Damian could feel the electricity crackle between them. These were dangerous waters. He wanted to retreat, to steer himself away from peril, but there was something inviting about Rose's plaintive stare. She returned his sharp gaze, unflinching. "The hope of a new bud," Damian replied simply.
The moment was broken when the server came over to take their orders. Rose ordered something classic, and Damian followed her lead. "I always say there's nothing quite like mediterranean food. You can try and give me all the weird rubbish from south east Asia, you can try and give me curries, but Merlin am I happy with a gyros or a pasta," Damian commented blithely, looking around the room. "Tell me Rose - what is it that those lips favour?"

Rose's small smile had finally faded, her expression relaxing back to it's normal still mask or indifference and coldness. Though, thankfully her gaze still remained warmer then normal. "I didn't take you for being into vanity gossip," she answered teasingly as she took a sip from her wine glass. Rivera. She knew that name, and she wasn't much of a fan of the woman. That was the head of Magical Law Enforcement. It wasn't that she disliked the woman as a person, but rather her job. "But unlike your line of work, I have very little interest in seeing Rivera." Though... To be honest? That didn't mean she hadn't actually met her Bianca Rivera, simply that she had little interest seeing the woman. Rose had, in fact, met her. But that was another story entirely. She was sure Damian would love the details... Perhaps she should throw him a bone. She took an even longer sip from her wine, her gaze glancing away to stare out the window. "I wasn't paying her hair much mind back then, had something more important to discuss," she finished, feigning an air of being lost in thought even though her words had been carefully chosen to see if she might peak his interest.
A new bud, he said? Rose's eyes never waivered, staring so intensely it was almost like she was trying to see right through his very soul. It was almost uncanny how intensely Rose could stare when she wanted. Though after a few moments of silent contemplation, and never breaking that eye contact, she finally seemed to come to some sort of answer. "Perhaps," was her simple response, her words barely more then a breath. Whatever she'd been searching for so intently in his eyes she seemed to have found some sort of answer.
It was perhaps a saving grace that the waiter had chosen that moment to approach, as it gave the pair a moment to relax into a more comfortable state once again. Rose folded her hands on her lap under the table. His words were saying one thing, but his last question was definitely not about food. Now... how to respond. She leaned back into her chair a little, eyeing him lazily. Those lips he was so curious about had turned into just the subtlest of smirks. "I've always fancied anything with a bite to it," Was she using the word bite intentionally? Yes, very much so. "The spicier the better. I'd rather feel the burn then play it safe. Safe bores me." She definitely wasn't just talking about food now.
(Since the potion plot is September 2026 that would mean that's in full swing or finished by the time these two are having dinner so throwing that out for a teaser.)

Damian chucked at Rose's response. She was right on it. He wasn't a gossip. Not in that sense. But it seemed like a safe edge to the conversation, something as silly and idle as Bianca Rivera's hairstyle. Damian wondered if she would grow it back - and wondered who she had restyled it for. He understood people to the kernel of their beings, and a change meant that she wanted to impress someone. Perhaps if Damian found out who the mudblood head of law enforcement fancied, well that could make a fantastic story.
Damian could see the headline now - Muggleborn Department Head motives question as truth surfaces about friday nights 'working.'. Damian chuckled to himself at the though, sating his palate with another sip of red. The discussion had naturally gotten more intense, with Rose and Damian both leaning forward, their breaths mingling over the sad state of a centrepiece on their table. Rose stared intently at Damian, her eyes flickering as she did. Damian met her stare evenly, his gaze dark and fathomless. At long last, Rose seemed satisfied, and replied.
Unable to help himself, Damian enquired what sort of things Rose liked. The way he posed the question made it sound infinitely more filthy than he really meant - though if he was being honest with himself, Damian was curious to both sides of that coin. "So, like a vampire?" asked Damian, keeping his expression neutral. "Safe bores your because safe is boring. You know as well as I do that a brush with death and destruction is just a typical Wednesday afternoon," he added with a smirk. "Personally, I like something that tests me. Makes me try new things. You know?" asked Damian, certainly not discussing plates.

The Vampire comment was nor was she was expecting and Rose made a noise rhat sounded like she was swallowing a laugh. She really wasn’t the sort to show too much emotion so it seemed like laughing had been too much for her and she’d chosen to fight the urge. ”Are you accusing me of liking vampires or being like a vampire?” though neither sounded necessarily wrong. No doubt there were many rumors of vampirism in the Nightshade family.
The topic was most certainly not food anymore. As Damian spoke she reached for her wine glass, lazily and slowly sipping on it. Once upon a time, she’d dreamed of a peaceful life. Where death was a constant looming presence. She’d given up on that dream long ago. Once she’d accepted her fate though it’d simply become a comfort of life. And now? Well could she ever live in a not chaotic world? She couldn’t imagine it anymore. ”Some people simply aren’t suited for the quiet life.” she started, pausing as she set her glass back down in the table and propping her elbow on the table, her chin in her hand. ”Aren’t you afraid that you might get burned?”

A devilish grin split across Damian's face at the noise that struggled to escape from Rose's mouth. "Full of surprises today, are we?" he said, chuckling. He liked that he could draw some semblance of emotion out of Rose - even if he couldn't get her secrets. Yet. Well, who knew, maybe she was as murderous as the rest of her family was rumoured to be. Somehow, Damian didn't believe that though. She didn't have the hard edges of a cold-blooded killer.
"Porque no los dos?" asked Damian, tilting his chair back on two legs as he appraised her lazily. "I hear they've got great stamina. You know, with not having blood pumping anywhere. Come to think of it, does that have an effect on vampire lads? Maybe I should investigate," said Damian, allowing the chair to fall back onto all four legs. Rose lazily sipped her wine and Damian followed suit, draining his before topping up both their glasses. A pleasant warmth spread from his chest outwards, searing him from his lips to his finger tips.
Damian tilted his head enquiringly at Rose. "Are you suggesting I can't handle it?" asked Damian. "Rose, I'm hurt. I thought you knew me better. What's a fear of being burned other than just a simple misunderstanding. When you learn to yield the fire... that's when things get truly interesting," said Damian. "But I don't suppose you have time for all my poetic nonsense, do you? So busy, travelling around the world, silencing dissenters and procuring clients. Or am I wrong?" He was certain the Nighshades wielded great power, and with great power came the need to manage great enemies.

Rose was someone that tried very, very hard, to control her expressions and tones. Trying to hide everything behind a cold mask. It was a weakness, letting people know what she feeling, at least in her family. When she'd been younger she'd only hid fear, but now... well now she just hid everything. Yet somehow this man was finding the cracks in that iron mask, drawing out subtle reactions, but reactions none the less. Rose got the urge to laugh under control and gave him a glare as he chuckled, though there wasn't any malice behind it.
Rose's eyebrows rose at how casual his remarks regarding vampires was. Though after a moment she smirked, letting out just a huff of a scoff (the closest she usually got to a laugh). She held her wine glass out to him as he moved to refill it. "You know, it's typically not considered good manners to be thinking about vampires in that sense when having dinner with a woman," she teased, taking a sip from her glass before setting it down, letting her fingers rest loosely around the glass rim. "You might make a girl feel jealous." Her gaze had been low, just staring absentmindedly at the wine glass but if flickered up to his own at her final statement.
Rose sat up straight, smirking, and brushing her hair over one shoulder and twirling a lock between her fingers. "No, I have no doubt you can handle it. It's a question of if you would want to," she explained coolly. "Some flee from the fire, while others flock to it. Both may be able to handle it. The difference is whether they are driven by fear or desire." She paused, her hand still from the lock twirling as she stared intently at him. As he mentioned her own "work" though she smirked. "I’d never be too busy to not spare time for your poetic words. I should have something to look forward to between all my evil deeds, shouldn’t I?"

Damian leered at Rose, a grin befitting the devil splitting across his handsome face. "My, my, Rose. You once had me fooled into thinking you weren't emotive enough to feel something as human as jealousy. I consider my stand corrected," drawled Damian, his grin morphing into more of a smirk. Rose knew how to push his buttons and pique his interest - that much could be confirmed with the stirring in his lower belly as she looked up at him through her lashes. Damian nearly forgot himself for a moment, and swallowed thickly, tearing his eyes away from Rose.
She was a Nightshade, Damian reminded himself. Though by far the most pleasant of the bunch, that didn't make her any less dangerous. He enjoyed a game of cat and mouse, but it was much preferable when he was the hunter. Not the hunted. He mused further about the game, playing with fire as he did so. He had become an expert at avoiding getting burned, but Damian felt himself dancing on the edge even now. "An apt observation, Miss Nightshade," said Damian, inclining his head ever so slightly to her. Damian didn't reply for a moment, instead lifting the now empty bottle. He was tempted to refill it surreptiously with a refilling charm, but thought perhaps it was not the right thing to do. Instead, he signaled a waiter to bring another bottle.
"You're very poetic, you know," said Damian, finally filling the silence that had bloomed between them. "And are you driven by fear or desire?" asked Damian, the latter coming out as a vainly curious question. "I'm so pleased you cherish our meetings so much as to avoid seeing me for months. Thought you'd run away, or tired of me. You know, with your extended absences, you could really wound a lesser man's ego," said Damian with a smirk.

Perhaps it was insanity, but Rose happened to like that particularly devilish grin he’d grinned. She leaned back as she twirled a lock of hair between her fingers. She may have quite a bit of control over her expressions, but she had little control over her emotions. Most people would probably be shocked by just how much she actually felt. Finally though she smirked. ”If I acted on the emotions I felt this meeting would be very different,” she started. While her tone and body language hadn’t changed at all, there was that intensity flashing behind her eyes again. Like a cat that had found something to play with, or the eye of a storm. A surreal calm and steadiness but it was all an illusion. After all, while the eye of a storm nah be calm, storms themselves weren’t. ”I’ve never felt calm a day in my life. Not even right now, Mr. karkaroff. ”
Damian had ordered another bottle of wine and she took the moment to stare out the window. It was pitch black outside aside from the streetlights that illuminated the walkway. She pondered his words. Was she driven by fear or desire? She hasn’t expected him to turn her words back on her without answering himself. Rose could come up with a reason to say either. Her fear, or her desire. But she knew the true answer. ”I’m a very selfish person, Damian,” she paused, her gaze turning to him though her head didn’t fully turn to face him head on. ”Once I find something I desire… The means and consequences mean little to me.”
Being called out for her disappearances made her smirk, scoffing softly. ”Did I run away? Or was i simply seeing if you would follow?” she teased. ”Why didn’t you come find me if your ego was so wounded?”

Damian watched hungrily as Rose twirled that lock of hair between her fingers, as if in a trance. "Luckily for us, you don't and nor do I," said Damian, swallowing and forcing his gaze to return to her own. There was a sort of intensity behind her eyes, an offering of trouble that Damian would be only too happy to take up. And the way that she was looking at him reminded Damian that he was dealing with a Rose amongst a thicket of thorns. Beautiful to look at, but treacherous to get too close to. He ran his fingers through his sleek black hair, buying himself time as he thought over what to say. Speaking and writing had always come easily to him, but Rose had stolen his ability with those eyes of hers.
"You're in good company. Ana reminds me of how selfish I am at least three times a week," said Damian, glad to have diffused the intensity of the conversation for just a moment. And it was just a moment - for as Damian took a deep drink of wine, Rose indicated that if she wanted something, she would stop at nothing to get it. It was almost music to his ears - if that music was discordant notes played at random. On one hand, Damian wanted nothing more than Rose. On the other, he quite enjoyed the back and forth between them, the growing crackle of electricity. "Is that so," Damian replied, though the words did not pack as much punch as he perhaps would have liked.
Damian smirked, tilting his head to the side. "I don't follow anything but a lead, my dear," said Damian smoothly. "And I said a lesser man. My ego is perfectly intact, though don't let me wound yours. That would be such a shame, wouldn't it?" said Damian. "I hope your time away was... therapeutic. Though I must admit I would be delighted to show you a few ways to unwind without leaving the country," said Damian slowly.

Well, she'd certainly rattled his cage just a little hadn't she? Rose smirked, her hand stilling mid lock twirl. She slowly unraveled her finger from the long lock, letting her blonde hair fall loosely over her shoulder. Rose tilted her head ever so slightly to the side. Rose didn't respond though, though her silence was answer enough as she took the moment to take a meticulously slow sip from her wine, her gaze still trained on him though it had grown much softer. It seemed like Damian had needed the moment to compose his own thoughts as well.
Rose smirked just a little into her wine glass as he called himself selfish. She closed her eyes as she lowered the glass and set it back on the table. She rested her elbows on the table, hands clasped together and opened her eyes. "For two selfish people, our restraint seems out of character. I only practice restraint because things I take a liking to break. Why do you?" She didn't elaborate on her words but her history didn't need an explanation. Either she broke it herself, or someone broke it to hurt her. She was still greedy and selfish. She'd said she'd do whatever it took to get what she wanted. But she hadn't said what happened to those things after she had them. Because she knew she'd eventually lose it. It was probably why she felt so greedy, she had to take it and use it before it broke on her.
Damian had a way of turning her words back on her, but it was exactly that characteristic she was most enjoying right now. "I don't know, my ego feels quite wounded. How do you plan on making it up to me?" She teased lightly. As he spoke next though she raised an eyebrow ever so slightly, this time a slightly more wicked smirk gracing her lips. "I don't think any of your ideas would help me 'unwind'. In fact I think you'd much prefer to see the opposite."

Damian remained silent for a moment, mulling over Rose's question. Why did he practice restraint? "To build trust," said Damian at last. It was the truth, and not one he expected to share. To him, the most important things were secrets shared. Knowing things about other people, that was where he held his true strength. He broke his gaze from Rose, a slight frown on his lips. Did she realise that she had broken him far more easily than Damian had expected? He was an expert at this game, but had shown his hand too soon.
The rest of their dinner followed in a lighter fashion, with teasing remarks and comments upon what they would like to do with one another, but both were too proud to actually admit to. Damian eventually paid the bill and rose from the table. "Shall I walk you back to your humble shop?" he offered with a smirk. "Don't want a lovely young woman such as yourself set upon by creatures of the night. You never know what might be lurking in the shadows. Though come to think of it, you're probably ten times more terrifying," he commented.
Damian walked Rose back to Knockturn Alley in relative silence, and kissed her lightly on the cheek before turning to depart. Just before she closed the door, he stopped her. "Let's do this again, Nightshade." With that, there was a flick of his coat and he was gone.
