▲ When the proposed offers were a charmed, bottomless bag or a Remembrall, Nessa realized that she literally could pick whatever she wanted from the stores. Keeping herself restrained would be easy, but Xiulan was literally offering to buy things that were expensive and beyond the scope of what was actually necessary for school. This was a chance to actually get something cool for once. Something she could show off to Nate and make him jealous with because he could never buy with his measly pizza job. Blishwick most likely paid him well but knowing Nate, her friend probably blew it all on booze and smokes. But what did people with money even get? To her, the necessities were what came first. Going through all the stores seemed like the best idea, and the other woman seemed to be saying they could do that too. At the end of the day, it wasn't her money that was being spent. If Xiulan wanted to throw galleons around like she didn't care, Nessa was going to take advantage of that somewhere. She just had to be smart about it and not pick something stupid. She had time to think about knickknacks though, as that would come after eating and picking up the essentials. Speaking of... "The cro-croque monsieur?" The actual way it came out of her mouth sounded horrible, especially the pronunciation. Good luck to anyone at Beauxbatons teaching her how to speak French. The way she said both words sounded more like she was spitting gravel out than anything else. Thankfully not every French word was like that, and it was mostly on her for butchering it. "They served it once when the tournament was going on...I didn't have it though," she explained, as if it even needed an explanation, before flipping the menu over listlessly. August 31, 2026 Paris, France "The cro-croque monsieur?" It was clear that Nessa wasn't sure how to pronounce it properly. Xiulan was impressed by her willingness to try, though, and she wasn't sure that she would have done much better if she hadn't known how it was pronounced. By the end of her year at Beauxbatons, Xiulan guessed, Nessa would end up picking up some French. Nessa said that it had been served once "when the tournament was going on"—the Triwizard Tournament, presumably—but that she hadn't had it then.
"A croque monsieur?" Xiulan nodded, her pronunciation closer to what it should have been but not "French" enough that she would have been taken for a native speaker. "Wonderful. Try it and see if you like it," she advised her. She wasn't really partial to that sort of thing herself, but that was also because she didn't really eat much in the way of cheese.

▲ “Yeah. That.” Merlin, the way she had said croque monsieur didn’t sound anything like what it was supposed to be. This was honestly going to make the upcoming months hell while trying to get people to pass her things at dinner. Assuming that was how Beauxbatons worked. At the Slytherin table she either made her man-servant – Nate – get things for her, or glared at first years until they passed a dish her way. Less energy was spent staring at people than getting it herself. But Beauxbatons students, of the now deceased ones she could remember, had all been pretentious. She was going to stick out like a sore thumb no matter what she did. Asking and pronouncing words incorrectly was going to be the worst and she knew that she was going to have to keep her cool if the French students gave her shit for it. Being top dog in Slytherin meant nothing at this school. Nessa made her order with the waiter when he returned, tacking a coffee onto it like she had planned, and then turned her attention back to the supply list again. Everything was basically the same in terms of general supplies: paper, quills, and mundane potion ingredients by the bottle. Nothing too out there. The names of the books were certainly different, and she couldn’t tell if any of them were simply the French translations of standard spell books or their own thing. All in all, it wasn’t terribly expensive when it came down to it. “I didn’t want to ask this when we first met because the director was there,” Nessa broke her silence as she looked up from her list, “But why are you doing this for me? Why not for the younger kids?” Why did anyone do this? At least Blishwick had made his thing out to be more of a working experience instead of straight-up charity. She didn’t really understand it at all. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Unfortunately, Nessa seemed far less confident in herself upon hearing "croque monsieur" pronounced, though the waiter didn't seem to have any trouble understanding what she meant. (Granted, he was probably used to serving people who didn't speak a word of French. There were no shortage of tourists to Paris, plus everyone who was trying to purchase last-minute supplies for Beauxbatons.) As for herself, Xiulan ordered a croissant, green tea, and water for them both.
It was as she was pulling a vial of Calming Draught from her purse that Nessa spoke to her. "I didn’t want to ask this when we first met because the director was there," she said, not that the subject seemed directly related to the list of supplies that was still on the table in front of her, "but why are you doing this for me? Why not for the younger kids?"
"Excuse me," Xiulan replied so that Nessa wouldn't think that she had ignored her. She held her hand around the vial as carefully as she could, obscuring the label with her hand, and drank its contents delicately before sealing the empty container and putting it back where it had come from.
Once the vial was back in her purse, she responded to Nessa's question. "…Why not?" she repeated curiously, although not in the way that Nessa had meant it. Why shouldn't she put that money towards an older child? Nessa wasn't any less deserving just because she was a teenager. She was old enough that the orphanage could have decided that it wasn't going to support her once she'd turned seventeen and come of age.

▲ While she was asking her question, Nessa watched curiously as the woman pulled what looked to be a vial out of her purse. Was she already drinking at this hour? Because good for her. Nessa immediately had more respect towards her because of that, and stared at her in shocked awe. She would kill for a sip from a flask right now. Nate always had strong stuff that made her whole head feel like it was on fire just from a drop or two. She never asked questions about what brand or what kind of liquor it was, as long as it took the edge off of the day. Remembering that he wasn’t going to be with her this year stung a bit. It did give her a bit of reprieve though. He was being a dick near the end of his sixth year and she’d made that known. Nessa wasn’t quite ready for the return of her question though, still mystified by the drink her sponsor just slugged back from the nondescript vial. She had to hold her tongue about mentioning how she liked her drinks strong, because this lady didn’t really need to know those certain details. That could come after everything was purchased. “I guess I don’t really understand what you get out of this. People only do things that benefit them, right?” That was the only way she would ever actively help someone in a lower position than she was. There had to be a trade off somewhere. Nessa didn’t really care if there was a stipulation at the end. With Blishwick, it had been to assist and do other odds and ends. Running chores for this woman during the winter break or for a few months next summer wasn’t going to kill her at all. Today was beneficial for her to some degree, so if a debt needed to be paid, she would probably follow through on it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France The stunned look on Nessa's face told Xiulan that she would have been better off going to the toilets and taking the potion, but it was too late for that. She didn't bring it up, at least, when she next said anything. "I guess I don’t really understand what you get out of this. People only do things that benefit them, right?"
It was the sincerity of the question that came as such a shock to Xiulan. People didn't always act so selfishly, but she understood deeply why Nessa might think that way. For a long time, she had, too. It wasn't hard to think that way after being hurt one too many times. She knew that Nessa deserved to hear an honest answer from her, but she could be honest without telling her everything there was to know about her.
"I did this because of what happened to Hogwarts," she shared, her voice gentle without being at a whisper. It wasn't anything that she felt uncomfortable sharing. "It was horrible, and I wanted to do something to help. I have the money, and it isn't a loss for me. I'm a widow and don't have children of my own. Just a phoenix, if you count him." She had herself and Zhurong, and that was it.

▲ Because of Hogwarts. So when an opportunity presented itself, essentially. Nessa chewed on the inside of her cheek as she thought about what Xiulan had said, as she knew that she may have been quick to judge in the moment. Her usual opinion on rich people was that they only did things that suited their agenda, and this wasn’t too far off from it. The mention of the money not being ‘a loss’ for her stuck out, but so did the fact that she was also on her own. The absence of Nate’s constant negativity over the past year had really made her go soft. She could sort of understand what others were getting at, as long as they weren’t all up in her face. Aside from the financial situation, was she really that much different from Xiulan? The companionship of a bird was probably just about the same as what she got out of Nate on a good day. “That makes sense,” she said slowly in response. The orphanage had done okay over the years when it came to ‘raising’ her. Obviously they had issues keeping her under control when it came to things like sneaking out and staying in line at school. Everyone knew that there was no such thing as a parental figure there, as much as the employees tried to assume those roles. It worked for the little kids, but those years were long gone for her. Now it was all about escaping. Too bad her birthday was right after the term began. “At least you had someone,” Nessa added after a moment. “Almost everyone in my life is because it’s an obligation. A part of the job. Everything they’ve given me is because it’s required by law.” Even her wand didn’t feel like it truly belonged to her at times. Not that her relationship with it was ruined by that fact, but because it only existed due to the orphanage making her take it for school. Same with her clothes and every day necessities. Anything that she could have called her own had burned up in her dorm room. “I just wanted to make sure that this wasn’t another one of those situations. That’s all.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Not all relationships were meant to be purely transactional, but it was clear to Xiulan that Nessa had come to expect that, especially if she hadn't ever known anything different. She was surprised to hear that Nessa wasn't as guarded about that as she might have been, though it probably was just a fact of life for her. People weren't always good or kind; Xiulan knew that, yet she knew that she couldn't relate completely. She'd had the privileged upbringing and the lavish lifestyle. She had had the happy marriage; she had had Aloysius. She couldn't deny any of that, and simultaneously she knew what it was to feel such deep desperation and to wonder if she could find any way out of the place of torment in which she'd been forced to live in the name of getting an education.
"I just wanted to make sure that this wasn’t another one of those situations. That's all."
Xiulan swallowed despite knowing that she hadn't come there to take advantage of Nessa's misfortune to better her own image. There were countless people out there who used "philanthropy" selfishly, to make themselves out to be something that they weren't really. As Nessa had mentioned, too, there were plenty more who were only there for the paycheck they received. It was difficult to explain that she wasn't like that, because not thinking that she was "like that" and actually being that way were two different things. But she wasn't receiving a paycheck for being in Paris, nor did she want the attention that could have come with the gift she'd given the orphanage.
"Thank you for your honesty, but that isn't my intention," Xiulan told Nessa, shaking her head. She could only speak to her intentions. As reassuring as she wanted to be to her, she couldn't just will Nessa into being on the same page. It didn't work like that. In theory, she could toss however much money she wanted to at something. It could buy what Nessa needed for school and then some, but it couldn't fix the way in which she had had to grow up. Money couldn't fix the past, and even magic was trickier in that respect than was practicable. "If you're uncomfortable with me here, I don't have to go into the shops with you," she offered. If it would be embarrassing for Nessa to have her hanging around, she didn't have to do that. "But I can join you if you want my company… or a human coat stand." That was Nessa's call to make, not hers, and she didn't want to put her in an awkward position.

▲ Getting it all out in the open was easier than trying to tip-toe around the entire day. She hated that game, which seemed to be one that a lot of people tried to play. Honesty had its place in the world, especially when she gave it out freely. Barely anyone ever stuck around to hear it coming from her though, always afraid she was going to punch first. Now that she sort of had Xiulan figured out, her wariness was decreasing. The woman wasn’t like Blishwick at all, who was flamboyant and extremely overt in the way he did things. A different kind of honest air was constantly around him, to the point where Nessa sort of got the impression that even his own daughter was careful about what she shared with him. As far as she was concerned, his touted ‘ability’ was actually mind-reading and he could know anything about you instantaneously. Nessa had preferred to not put her information into his system, or whatever it was, despite being offered it. She didn’t need to be paired with some old dude unless he was on death’s door and filthy rich. Then it would be okay… “No, I’m fine with you coming along,” Nessa responded. “I don’t want to overstep on what I need for supplies.” Because at the end of the day, that’s what this was all for: school supplies. Even though Xiulan had already mentioned getting replacements for the things that had been lost, there really wasn’t much that hadn’t been school supplies at one point or another. The books had all been on loan for the orphanage, so they were never truly hers. Her only remaining Slytherin uniform was the one that she’d been wearing the night of, and the rest of her clothes had already been sort of replaced. “We always started with the smaller items first,” she started to explain, “When they took us shopping. So I’d be fine starting with potion ingredients and the likes.” That method was mostly because the younger kids couldn’t hold their heavier supplies for long. She always thought making them get cauldrons first would make the most sense, but apparently the workers believed otherwise. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Nessa said that she was fine with her being there and that she didn't want to overstep in purchasing the supplies that she needed. Xiulan was impressed that Nessa was being so considerate, but she wasn't very concerned about the idea that Nessa might take the money and run. Instead, Nessa advised her that she was used to starting with the smaller items first when she went shopping with the people from the orphanage, so she felt that potions ingredients would be the first up.
That made perfect sense to do it systematically, Xiulan thought; they could start small and work their way up to the larger (and presumably heavier) items. That way, they wouldn't have to carry around the heavier items for any longer than was necessary, which was probably even more important when they were shopping for multiple children at once. Xiulan didn't have to worry about that, but they were looking at no shortage of things that needed to be replaced. There was little point in dragging, say, a cauldron from one shop to the next if it could be avoided.
"We're not in a rush," she assured Nessa. They could take their time at the café, finish up, and then start their shopping. "And I agree," Xiulan added. "Starting with the smaller items will be easier for us, but you don't have to follow that as a rule." If she saw something she liked that didn't fit the "small-to-large" rule, then that didn't mean that she couldn't get it. Besides, it was bound to be impractical at times. Some shops would have larger and smaller items in one place, and it was illogical to go around adhering to that rule if it meant having to make multiple trips to the same few places.

▲ This whole thing was strange. Stranger than the circumstances that had led her to Paris and attending Beauxbatons. Being able to go at her own pace without having to wait for a half-dozen children to chatter about what they wanted and what they couldn't get was going to be amazing. That was easily the worst part about having to shop with everyone from the orphanage. They refused to split the days up between the older and younger kids. Even Nessa could see how difficult it was to wrangle all of them at the same time in Diagon, but she never stepped in to help in the fear that they would volunteer her as a babysitter. She'd rather be confined to her room as punishment and her wand confiscated over that. The other children were not her responsibility. "It's just easier that way for me," she responded. Her gaze had fixated on her hands, which until now she hadn't realized were interlocked tightly. Merlin, was she actually nervous about this school shopping? Or was it the trip to the new school tomorrow? A lot had happened over the past few months, and for the first time she didn't have Nate immediately accessible to whine about it to. She was in her own now, aside from having the rich lady to help her with shopping. While she had been happily looking forward to her school year on her own without her friend, that had all changed the second the accident occurred at Hogwarts. Admitting she needed Nate within arm's length was embarrassing though. After the night of the fire, having that idiot nearby was reassuring. "And so we don't have to carry anything heavy the whole time." Like the whole new sets of books that she needed to buy. Or literally anything. Because it was a whole hell of a lot more than just the normal supplies she needed now. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Xiulan hadn't had to shop for school supplies since she had been a student. It hadn't been an annual occurrence for her in a very long time, and she was happy to go along with whatever would make things easier for Nessa, who was looking down at her hands as she spoke. "And so we don't have to carry anything heavy the whole time," Nessa then added, though she seemed quieter than she had been.
"It's alright," Xiulan reminded her. If something was a bit heavy, they would figure out a way to deal with it. Replacing years of supplies wouldn't mean going into one shop, buying a few quills, and calling it a day. She knew that her tastes probably wouldn't match up with Nessa's completely, but it was about getting what she needed for a year at Beauxbatons—not just buying things indiscriminately.
"We'll make sure you have everything you need for school, and I'll make sure that you don't have to carry everything around all day." If they had to purchase things and have them set aside for them to come back later in the day, they'd do that. Xiulan wasn't going to leave Nessa struggling under the weight of a cauldron stuffed full of other supplies. "And if you do forget something, I'll make sure that it gets sent to you." Nessa had enough to think about just because she had to adjust to a new school; she didn't need to stress over the possibility that she might forget something and be out of luck for an entire year. "Getting your robes fitted and tailored might take some time, so we shouldn't leave that until the end of the day," Xiulan added, not that she was trying to mess up Nessa's plans.

▲ Was this what having a parent was like? Or at least an adult that had the capacity to care for you past the age of eleven? She had rejected such an idea years ago, having seen the way the older kids – namely Nate – were handled once they were enrolled at Hogwarts. Being forgotten was a very real thing at the orphanage, especially once you hit a certain age. They only had the ability to put one-hundred percent of their time into the younger children. The ones that actually needed it. Except she had always wanted it to. All it took was having one employee to say they cared. When they did try, she knew it wasn’t something that would last. The turn-over rate there was frequent and their priorities were with other things. Worrying about she and Nate was basically a lost cause. But they had also only gotten to that point because of how they were treated. Nessa refused to call it neglect, because they were taken care of, fed, clothed, and looked after. Yet there was zero emotional attachment after that age line was crossed. It was always like they were being pushed to get older so they could graduate and leave. Her time was finally almost here, and had her birthday been today instead of in five days, she would have dropped out and fended for herself. Maybe it was a good thing that it wasn’t, because then she wouldn’t have been able to experience whatever this feeling was. Even living with Blishwick hadn’t made her feel like she belonged, mostly because she had gamed the system to get there. This time it was out of the goodness of this woman’s heart. It was scary. Trusting that people actually cared this much to help was a terrifying feeling to open herself up to. Nate probably would have made fun of her for it. Was it really so bad though? “We can start with the robes then, I guess…” If they were trying to get things done in an orderly fashion, then that would be the best route, wouldn’t it? Get the measurements done and then pick the uniform up at the end of the day? She recalled that the Beauxbatons dress code was flashy, having seen the students during the Triwizard Tournament. Hopefully those were just the dress robes and not their everyday ones. Because if that was the case then she was just going to wear her remaining Slytherin robes for the rest of the year. August 31, 2026 Paris, France Nessa didn't sound very enthusiastic about getting her robes fitted but agreed that they could start with the robes after all. That was good, Xiulan felt, that she understood her thought process there. It would take longer than if she had robes from previous years that needed only a few alterations to work well for the next year. She would need to try on everything that she needed to buy to see how it fit her and then go from there.
Although it would take a while, the end result would be well worth it. Xiulan realized then, however, that Nessa probably hadn't even had so much as alterations made to her Hogwarts robes. She likely hadn't been wearing the same robes since she was eleven, but Xiulan doubted that the orphanage could afford to purchase everything new for the children every year. They must have gotten most of what they needed secondhand, whether from older children or from strangers via donations.
"Once we finish eating," Xiulan confirmed, "we can do that. And I'm sure you'll want some clothes other than your uniform, too." For times when the students didn't have to wear their uniforms, she didn't think that Nessa would want to stay in uniform, necessarily.
Obviously, the orphanage must have taken care of some of that in the wake of the attack on Hogwarts, but Xiulan wanted to give Nessa the opportunity to pick some things out for herself. She didn't want Nessa to be singled out if it could be avoided. Being a Hogwarts student who had to attend Beauxbatons for a year as a result of a tragedy was bad enough.
Besides, they were in Paris—one of the world's major cities for fashion—and needed to take advantage of it.

▲ Right, once they finished eating. The thought of getting more than the essentials during school shopping was definitely a bit much for her. Everything about this process was mind numbingly boring and rushed, and yet here she was sitting in France with a woman that wanted to spread the good will and buy her a whole bunch of shit simply because she felt like being nice. Nessa knew that she should be thankful – not every kid at the orphanage got a deal like this. At the same time, she was also not like the rest, where they still had a chance at adoption and a family. For her, that was never going to happen. Her childhood was legally done in five days. Having everything replaced that she had lost would be helpful though, and she couldn’t deny that at all. She had to keep reminding herself that there was no reason for her to be confrontational with Xiulan about any of this. “I might be fine with that already…” Nessa trailed off about potentially buying other clothes as well. There was a considerable amount that had burned in the fire though, and while some had been replaced already, not everything was back to the way it had been prior. “Well…maybe if there’s a sale or something,” she added after a brief pause. As if something like a sale even meant anything to this lady. “But I’ll need to think about it as we go.” She could always just wear her old robes in her downtime if Beauxbatons was strict about having their stupid blue ones on during class time. Somehow she’d find a way around that rule, even if it meant getting in trouble for it. The Hogwarts robes were too comfy to not want to wear all the time. “Thanks again,” Nessa threw in quietly at the end. There was going to be a lot of that today.
