▲ There it was. The telltale look of disapproval from their mother. Mina had wrongly assumed that it was because of her colorful description of the wine. Nope! The way Evy handed over her wine glass as their mum took her spot on the couch was almost identical to the one that Callisto gave whenever Mina woke up on the couch still drunk at ten in the morning. She had always known where the glare came from, but found it scary how close both of them came to one another. Everyone else in the family probably equated her and Sarah's follies in a similar manner. Living in such close quarters their entire life clearly led them to rubbing a lot of their personalities onto each other. Had Evy's glass of wine not been confiscated, Mina would have offered to relieve the glass of its contents. She knew now that would be impossible, as one of the two wine fiends in the family had a solid grasp on it. Though after a few sips of this cheap one, she was already thinking about dumping it out. From the kitchen came the sound of whining, and Mina knew what that meant: the dogs wanted to go out. "Evy, join me for a walk?" she asked abruptly as she got to her feet and polished off the remainder of her wine, the entire half a glass down in one gulp. No surprise that it still tasted bad. "I need some fresh air anyways." And a smoke. There would be a lot of smoke breaks and stepping outside to 'walk the dogs' tonight, because there was no way she was making it all the way through dinner without them. Crossing back into the kitchen and putting her wine glass next to the sink (because she'd probably have another glass or three later), she was practically accosted by the dogs. The second one of her arms hit the sleeve of her jacket, Titania knew it was outside time. Her excitement spilled over into the other two, who both immediately circled her legs and started their high-pitched whines. They sort of sounded like Callisto when she was complaining about work and patients! MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

While you were out building other worlds where was I? Their mother was unfazed by the apparent shift in Evy’s demeanor as she took a spot on the couch with Evy’s former wine glass. She hardly had a chance to have a few sips before it was confiscated. Sarah gave her a sort of sympathetic look, mouthing ‘full moon’ when their mother wasn’t looking. Sarah had never been much of a sympathetic person, though it was probably for Evy’s benefit. In any case, Evelyn only cared that Sarah was on her side. But the full moon wasn’t the only reason for Stella’s mood. Evelyn knew that best. As the youngest, she had spent the most time with their mother lately, especially in a post-Dakoda world. The holidays were a challenge.
Sarah commented that their father should be home soon. Perhaps there were last-minute things at the ministry that had to be finished before a holiday break. But as Evy lazily began scrolling through her phone again, she tuned out the small attempts at small talk and idle conversation. At least their mother was unapologetic when it came to these things. In contrast, Callisto would have pulled out her soapbox, dusted it off, and then gone on about how Evy was far too young to be drinking, and she still had school to worry about and what kind of example she was setting for their young nephew.
She had fully focused on her phone for a moment until she internally jumped at the sudden sound of her name. Evy’s gray eyes looked up just as Mina emptied her glass. ”Sure.” She agreed—until Callisto and their dad arrived, there wasn’t much to do anyway. Unplugging her phone, the cable fell with little sound on the floor, and the dogs excitedly scurried around Mina in the kitchen. The leashes were always kept near the door in a side table drawer, and after Evy grabbed her coat, she loudly let them dangle, and her parent's dogs ran toward her since they knew exactly what that sound meant.
”Alright—hold on. One at a time.” She mumbled as she focused on leashing one dog while the other tried to climb on top. ”I hope the neighbor isn’t out.” Evy mused aloud as she ensured the leashes were secure. ”He’s telling anyone that will listen about his four days at the French Ministry of Magic, and now suddenly he speaks French.” Their mother glanced over at Evy as she lightly nodded in agreement. ”Shame nobody taught him how to conjugate his verbs.” Living and going to school full time in France had made it painfully evident to Evy despite not being anywhere near fluent.

December 23, 2026 Mina invited Evelyn to go on a walk with her and the dogs, which left Sarah and their mother in awkward silence as they listened to the two younger girls attempting to wrangle the pack of dogs. Sarah was pretty sure that the dogs would be walking her younger sisters (instead of the other way around), but at least she wasn't the one stuck on dog duty. She already had her transformation coming up.
"…Might as well take our Wolfsbane Potion whilst they're out, then, Mum," Sarah mumbled to her mother. It was better than getting dog hair in the potion and ruining the batch that way. Given that it was Christmas and all, Sarah didn't really want to try her luck. She also didn't want to be stuck in a staring contest with her mother for ten or fifteen minutes or however long Mina and Evy extended their walk until in order to get out of the house.

▲ Trying to walk all three dogs on her own would have been impossible unless she had one of those fancy dogwalker leash belt things she'd seen muggles use in London. Even then, being dragged across the pavement by her neurotic samoyed and the family mutts wasn't how she wanted to spend her Christmas holidays. They could be a little aggressive on walks when all three were together. Like a neighborhood gang. Thankfully Evy was going with her, and had swiftly leashed the other two while Mina struggled to get her own dog restrained. Part of the problem was that she was simultaneously trying to pull a cigarette out and shove into her mouth in preparation for the walk, but her dog thought she was holding a treat out for her. While stubborn, Mina often wondered how intelligent her dog actually was. "Merlin, in this day and age?" Mina responded. The guy that lived next door had always been annoying while growing up. Hated dogs, which the Oliveira's always had, and was really just an obnoxious snob in general. "I've probably slept with more French people than words he claims to know." That bit she kept quiet enough just for Evy to potentially hear it, hoping the clacking of the dog nails on the kitchen floor would hide it from catching her mum's ears. With Titania leashed, she pulled the door open and hip-checked it to give her sister space to squeeze through. Once all the way outside, Mina tactically held her wand up to the end of her cigarette and lit it. A dangerous way to go about it, but it beat looking for her lighter right now. "So..." she started before taking a long drag of her cigarette. It was time to get more serious now that Sarah wasn't within earshot and their mum wouldn't have time to stop it for bringing the mood down. "I've been thinking a lot about this lately, and I'm pretty sure Cal agrees, but we want to make sure you're doing okay. Like, Hogwarts got fucked up. And I'm pissed I couldn't be there immediately, and Cal is too because she had to help with the emergency not knowing if you were safe..." Where was she going with this again? Those sentiments had been pretty clear in the combined frustration throughout the year. "Basically what I'm trying to say is that I shouldn't have taken things for granted after Dakoda, and I still did. And I'm sorry for that." She immediately took another aggressive puff of her cigarette as she finished speaking. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

While you were out building other worlds where was I? Evy wasn’t complaining about the chance at some fresh air and getting out of the house. It was tense enough with most of the family home, let alone close to the full moon. Sometimes she wondered what was worse—a house full of werewolves near the full moon or a house full of women. Evy finished clipping the leash to one dog and put her arm through the loop while focusing on the second. Now that it was confirmed they were going outside, the dogs were pacing in place and waiting for that door to open. As Evy stood up, she caught Mina’s comment regarding their neighbor and suppressed a chuckle—at least for their mother’s sake. Good thing Callisto wasn’t here yet.
They left the house, and the cool air immediately hit her. The dogs panted excitedly and tugged on the leashes as they tried to make a break for some plants near the front of the house as if they weren’t just there that morning. But, they didn’t have to walk far for the dogs to find an interesting patch of grass to investigate for a little while. Mina focused on her cigarette in the meantime, though Evy looked up curiously when she spoke. She hadn’t exactly expected conversation. At the mention of Hogwarts, Evy shifted her weight between her feet as she fidgeted with the leashes in her hands.
There weren’t many people that walked around calling Oliveira's sentimental, so Evy didn’t immediately answer. But aside from the unexpected question, she didn’t know what she felt about it. It was easy to push aside what happened in her mind, though there was the occasional nightmare or memory. ”I miss how things were at Hogwarts.” Evy admitted. It was rare for her sisters to mention their brother anymore, and a slight frown crept on Evy’s face. Mina had almost lost another sibling—plus Evy wasn’t really used to receiving apologies. She felt awkward. ”I—“ Evy opened her mouth to speak, but one of the dogs ran over, and their leash wrapped around her legs. After she’d untangled herself, she cleared her throat and fidgeted again.
”I’m alright, I guess. Beauxbatons kind of sucks.” Not to mention she’d hardly spoken to Luna these days. At least familiar faces such as Nessa were there, who wasn’t as bad of company as it had been made out to be at Hogwarts. And even Nate answered messages. Evy gave a light shrug as she looked away at the dogs for a moment. ”It's fine…I just don’t like being so far away.” Her tone was calm, soft even. But she paused again, Dakoda’s name still lingering in her mind. ”I miss him.” She whispered, adjusting her grip on the leashes as one noticed a bird or something. While she was glad to see her family for the holidays, it never felt complete. There was a question on Evy’s mind, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted to ask before her remaining sister and father even arrived. Sarah. Evy wanted harmony between the rest of them, but was it even possible? Maybe better to ask another time.

December 23, 2026 After she and her mother had both taken their respective doses of Wolfsbane Potion, Sarah opted to excuse herself, too, letting her mother know that she was going out for a smoke, and got her cloak and boots back on in a hurry. Her sisters were not about to leave her there without literally anyone or anything else to distract her. Even having their father or Callisto there would have been better than nothing. No, she had to make conversation or get out, and she chose the latter.
From the fact that she could still hear their voices, though not what they were saying, Mina and Evelyn hadn't gotten as far away from the house as she had expected. That was probably because of the dogs. If they didn't have to stop and sniff every little thing, then maybe they would have been down to the next road. Sarah wandlessly lit the end of a cigarette after pulling one from the carton in the pocket of her jacket, enjoying that the smoke rings she blew gave her something else to look at other than her breath.

▲ Mina never wanted to bring Dakoda up in conversations like this because she felt like it weaponized his name. A way to gain sympathy and compassion from her family members. But it also allowed for comparisons. Had Evy perished inside Hogwarts, there was no telling what that would have done to an already destroyed family. Their parents hung on because of Sebastian, and Mina was positive that Callisto was doing the same thing despite never actually saying it out loud. The drinking certainly hadn't slowed her sister or mother down though, and for once she seemed like the normal one in the family. And Sarah? Whatever was going on there, Mina wanted none of it. It reeked of mismanagement on the part of the Ministry and a lack of oversight on their part. Pulling a prisoner of Azkaban out to train them as Interpol? No one had that sort of luck. Especially Sarah. The Hogwarts incident being thrown on top of all of this had frustrated her far beyond what she thought she was capable of feeling, and finally having Evy to herself outside of the house meant she could express those feelings. As strange as that was in their family. "I do too..." she responded about their brother. While Beauxbatons was far in the distance sense, it could have been a lot worse. Ilvermorny was on a completely different continent and Durmstrang...well, she didn't actually know where that was. It was supposedly really cold there, and that was enough for Mina to tune out any benefits that came with the school. Those weren't the things Evy wanted to hear though, at least Mina assumed they weren't, as false optimism sucked more than a vegan vampire did. "I know you don't have days off like you used to with Hogsmeade so that sort of nixes me visiting next term," Mina continued from where their conversation had ended earlier in the house. "Buuut call me any time you feel like you need to. Even if I'm at work. Customers aren't as important to me as you are." Despite instant dog and leash entanglement, Mina reached to pull her sister into an awkward side-hug. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

While you were out building other worlds where was I? Evy had definitely grown wary of much her mother hovered since the end of the previous school year. It was far worse than how she had hovered after her brother passed—at least when she had forced herself to resume her normal life of going to work and such. Evelyn, the youngest, doomed to never be treated as if she was older than twelve. If she was being honest, it wasn’t something Evy had ever noticed right away. Her siblings all paid some level of attention to her, even with their busy lives and careers. Though that conversation with Sarah after she’d gotten home had gone much differently than expected. Evy didn’t fully understand all the things that had happened—at least Sarah wasn’t just gone anymore.
They all missed their older brother—even the always serious Callisto. And none of them apparently shared coping mechanisms for handling such things. But it already felt weird in the house—Sebastian was missing, which was probably a big part of it. Mina came in with a side hug, and Evy just stood there to accept it. Beauxbatons was so different from Hogwarts, and she desperately missed the Hogsmeade weekends. ”Thanks…” Evy responded. Maybe on a different day, she would have responded much more enthusiastically. But it made her think, and she looked away, her question stuck in her throat like a lump. ”Mina…why didn’t you guys tell me.” Evy looked back. She could understand her parents keeping the full story from her. ”I overheard you and Cal talking, and I just—“ She had to pause a moment. This would never not feel like a stab in the chest. ”I’m not a child.” Evy shifted her weight on her feet again while crossing her arms.
It was a sore spot. And one that was almost just another open would she was ignoring and pushing to the back of her mind with the rest of her unpleasant feelings. To be ignored until she couldn’t anymore. Her friends had left her behind, and her sisters left her out of things. ”I still can’t really wrap my mind around it all and not even when I talked to Sarah about it…” But understanding and not knowing were two separate things. The dogs began getting restless again, and Evy glanced over to where they were staring. The front door had opened, and she spotted her oldest sister walk out. Speak of the devil.

December 23, 2026 Sarah finished her cigarette and—looking for something to keep her from having to go back inside—decided that it would be better to catch up to her sisters and the dogs. She discarded her cigarette butt in the bin and then walked at a brisk pace to meet up with Mina and Evy. Walking at a slight distance from the dogs so that they wouldn't get in her way, she knew that her sisters probably didn't want her company; she hadn't been invited on their walk, but she was there now.
"Couldn't f**king stand it in there," she interjected, not even aware that she had been part of the subject of their conversation. Spending time with her sisters was far from her favorite thing to do, but it was Christmas. If she couldn't be charitable then, then when could she be?

▲ The anxious puffing on her cigarette as Evy started delving into the details of their brother's death was not helping Mina in the slightest. This had happened before, and she had managed to wave it off. Rather, she only delayed it until now. Dwelling on Dakoda's untimely death for long made her sick to her stomach still, specifically because of what led to it. The actual details on how he died were fuzzy and unbelievable due to Sarah's retelling of it being the only known narrative, but Mina was positive that the lead up to the encounter was because of what had happened to Ophelia. Those little bits and pieces of information that were unconfirmed (though highly likely to have happened), were what had kept Sarah 'innocent' in the eyes of quite a few people. A fight between two werewolf siblings that both had dominating personalities could only end up so many different ways. And then once captured, she played her cards right. The real trick was trying to decide if now was the best time to tell Evy all of that. They were a good distance from the house and Sarah now, but there was still the rest of the holidays they'd have to deal with her. Once that box was opened, stuffing everything back inside was impossible. "We should have..." she admitted instantly. The other problem was that the two of them had kept it to themselves for awhile. Callisto wanting to confirm that the story was true and he had really died before bringing it to their parents. Otherwise they would have looked like they were falsely accusing Sarah of murder. "I wouldn't tru-" Mina cut herself off the second she saw the subject of their conversation walking up the street towards them. For once, she agreed with Sarah on that: being alone with their mum these days was awkward and boring. Especially once she had a bottle opened. It was depressing to watch. At least when Callisto drank, she got chatty and bad-mouthed hospital execs. "Congrats! Not a child anymore," she quickly changed the course of the conversation she'd been having with Evy, holding out her pack of cigarettes for her younger sister. If she was good at anything, it was playing the fool. Years of dumb antics and poor decision making had built up that veil nicely, and responsibility was still received by her family as a shock. "Mum will be too piss drunk to smell it on you. She'll just think it's from me," Mina reasoned as she stamped out her first and immediately replaced it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

While you were out building other worlds where was I? Evy still remembered that night. Sitting in the dark part of a hallway while her sisters angrily whispered to one another but soon forgot how to control the volume of their voices. At first, Evelyn struggled to realize the context, and then it clicked. The way her heart had skipped at least two beats, and she forgot to breathe…and then the realization that she was just being left out. Again. But this was a family matter, which only made it worse. And then Sarah’s explanation after she’d gotten home—well, that had only confused Evy more because it didn’t seem like Dakoda. The image and memory of her late brother was so stubbornly ingrained in her mind now.
Her eyes watched Mina as she stopped mid-sentence. ”You wouldn’t what?” Evy asked, wanting to clarify the thought her sister didn’t complete, but she heard Sarah approach. ”You don’t have to deal with her over the summer.” Evy added, probably a little too bitterly. Anytime there was a break, Evy was stuck at home with their mother and her newfound hobby of ‘wine tasting’. This past summer had been the worst it had ever been, considering Evelyn had been in mortal peril. It only encouraged Evy’s tendency to brush things off and temporarily ignore the severity of what had happened. But truthfully, if she let her mind linger on it too much, she could just smell all that smoke again, and that anxious fear crept back into her chest, the fear of being trapped. It was almost claustrophobic. But she would never tell her mother that. It was akin to telling her she’d not only lost her oldest but almost lost her youngest.
Mina didn’t respond to Sarah but instead shoved her pack of cigarettes in Evy’s face, and she raised an eyebrow slightly. Smoking had never been high on the list for Evelyn. Had she tried it? Yes, of course. Nate always had a smoke nearby if he could help it. But all her sisters did it, so she might as well. ”Thanks…” Evy mumbled as she carefully pulled one out. Placing in her mouth as she remembered and had seen, she waited for Mina to find her lighter. The dogs relaxed a bit and lounged in the grass, enjoying the cooler weather. ”She’s definitely piss drunk by now.” Evy spoke simply, not a hint of surprise in her voice anymore when it came to their mother. Their father didn’t drink nearly as much, but he was often away at work.

December 23, 2026 Mina seemed to be feeling charitable, too, judging by her offering Evelyn a cigarette. Sarah wasn't sure that Evelyn had ever actually smoked before, but she was around enough smokers not to be totally idiotic with a cigarette in hand. Evelyn didn't say anything to her, which made Sarah wonder if her sisters had been talking about her… at least until both of them mentioned the likelihood that their mother was already drunk. (She hadn't been when Sarah had left the house, but she wouldn't have been surprised if that was what was going on in her absence. And she could have snuck a bottle of something outside, too, if she'd thought ahead!)
Sarah looked between her sisters, glad that she wasn't the one smoking and dealing with the dogs simultaneously. Evelyn still held her unlit cigarette in her mouth as though it were some sort of sweet. "Do you need a light, Evy?" she offered, wondering if Mina would beat her to the punch.

▲ If she could have finished saying she wouldn't trust Sarah with anything without the fear of retaliation, she would have said it then and there. But Sarah scared the shit of her. Being alone with her was absolutely not an option, and she didn't want to leave Evy alone with her either. Especially around the full moon. Things were inherently safe at their parents house, but outside of that? Staying away from her oldest sister was her number one priority. Dealing with her made her skin crawl and her stomach turn constantly. Mina wanted to tell Evy that she was free to stay with her and Callisto, which was honesty better than home or wherever Sarah stayed these days. Hell, they could even get bunk beds again just for old times sake. Anything was better than leaving her around the problem sibling. "Thanks, but I've got it," Mina shot Sarah a glare as she fumbled for the lighter that perpetually lived in her pocket. She didn't trust herself with lighting the cigarette with her wand that close to Evy's face. It would be one thing if she accidentally burned her own eyebrows off, another if it was her sister's. Right as she brought the lighter up to the cigarette and flicked at it, there was a familiar crack of someone apparating down the street. Mina turned to look, making direct eye contact with Callisto, who had finally decided to show up. "I see that Mina!" she yelled from the edge of the driveway. "Don't you dare light it!" Callisto had begun to walk up the road towards them when the front stoop light of their neighbor's house flicked on and he stepped out, immediately trying to converse with her in what was probably the extremely broken and poor French that Evy had been mentioning earlier. Nudging Evy and motioning with her head to keep walking, Mina picked up her pace so that she could get around the corner and out of sight. "Thank Merlin she didn't see you with that wine glass earlier," she laughed as she stopped once she felt they were out of view, lighting her cigarette and holding her lighter out once again for Evy. While you were out building other worlds where was I? Evy looked at Sarah as she spoke and offered her a light, but before Evy could even think to speak, Mina interjected. Her eyes looked between them again—it wasn’t a big deal. The dog’s leashes felt secure as the loops were around her forearm, giving her access to her hand again. As Mina brought the lighter up, a voice entered Evelyn’s ears—it was shrill enough to immediately startle her, and she took the cigarette out of her mouth before it fell. The three of them looked immediately to the street. Evy had barely processed the crack of someone apparating when the even louder voice was heard.
Her neighbor stepped out, and between Callisto’s noticeable hawkeye glare and his butchering of the French language, Evy’s eyes rolled her eyes so hard she was almost dizzy. ”Pourquoi est cris vous?” Again, Evy knew that what was spoken was incorrect because she’d been surrounded by bitter Beauxbaton students for the better part of four months. Her new classmates weren’t keen on the intrusion of students from the UK, and there was still that lingering memory of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. They were not keen on practicing their English with them. Evy looked back when Mina nudged her, and they both pulled on the dog’s leashes as they turned a corner. She didn’t even look to see if Sarah had initially followed.
They couldn’t see Callisto’s eagle-eye stare from this angle, but she’d catch up with them soon. When her sister had a mission, not much got in her way. ”I don’t see the big deal…I’m eighteen now.” But their age gap definitely played a part in perceptions all around. Evy placed the cigarette back between her lips and let Mina light it. But it had definitely been some months since Evy had smoked, and she found herself coughing slightly at the sudden dry sensation in the back of her throat. She heard the heavy and angry footsteps undeniably from Callisto round the corner. Evy could single them out anywhere.
When Evy was younger, such a reaction would have prompted her to immediately stop what she was doing and hide the evidence. But now, she simply looked at her second eldest sister as she continued to smoke as if this were a regular occurrence for her. ”Happy Christmas, Cal.” Evy was growing more annoyed at the way she was being pushed this way and that way and every way that wasn’t the way she wanted to go. At least when Sebastian was with them, Evelyn wasn’t the youngest anymore. ”Honestly, Sarah's the only one who doesn’t treat me like I’m eleven.” Evy said clearly frustrated as she waited for Callisto to take the cigarette away.

December 23, 2026 Sarah cursed under her breath as soon as she realized that Callisto had arrived. This was going to be some Christmas, but at least she had an excuse to leave soon enough. Somehow, she didn't think that her younger sisters would want to stick a collar and lead on her to walk her down the street once she had shifted into her werewolf form. Now, she had to make the choice between sisterly bonding plus Callisto or going back into the house and seeing if their father had gone straight there—also a great way of confirming whether or not their mother was as drunk on wine as they guessed.
Not wanting to risk getting in the middle of anything between Callisto and the other two, she tagged along with Mina and Evelyn. She hoped that the dogs would be excited enough to see Callisto that they would provide a distraction, though Evelyn was perfectly justified in pointing out that she was eighteen. She was more than of age, and one cigarette wouldn't kill her (even if her coughing from it might have made her sound like it).
"Let her smoke, Cal," Sarah told Callisto, taking great pleasure in Evelyn's saying that she was the only one who didn't treat her as though she were still eleven. "Mum's at home drinking, if you really want to be stroppy at Christmas."
