I was one thing now I'm being another It was surreal to think that her educational journey would be over in what felt like a blink of an eye. If Evelyn lingered on the thought too long, it left her stomach in knots. Or that could have been the fast-approaching anniversary of the fire at Hogwarts. Or maybe a combination of both. A few of her professors had grown increasingly frustrated with her. Evy managed good enough grades, and there had always been the potential for better, but she’d preferred the interesting distractions in her life instead. But it was the path of least resistance because Evy didn’t want to acknowledge she felt like crap most of the time.
She’d been on Easter break for over a week, but it had taken her a few days to respond to Luna about visiting her in Ireland. A year ago—even six months ago Evy would not have hesitated, but the memory of that last disastrous dinner still lingered in her thoughts. Simon was nowhere near Evy’s good side, and not even the best-drawn map by Luna would lead him there at that rate. Not that he was looking to go anywhere Nate was. It was complicated. That was all she could say about that. At least the weather was warmer. She noted as she appeared in an alleyway and away from prying eyes. Luna’s flat was a very short walk, much shorter than her first visit.
But Evy was not heading there—Evy had suggested perhaps grabbing a drink. Merlin knew Evy needed one, and the girls in her year at Beauxbatons were far less rebellious than Hogwarts. If Evy or Nessa wasn’t in detention at some point, people seemed legitimately shocked. She had considered asking Mina to teach her how to smuggle in firewhiskey, but it seemed pointless now. It was unnatural to feel so nervous about meeting one’s best friend, but the last year had been a struggle. Even Nate had a snarky thing or two to say about Evy’s visit today, but she silenced that quickly with a quick and cold glare. But as Evy was a few minutes late, she quickly noted the recognizable blonde head standing outside of the bar as she approached.

Luna had spent nearly two hours getting ready for her drink with Evy.
It wasn't that she was nervous. Evy was her best friend. But... she was incredibly nervous. There was no way that she could deny that, no amount of stubborn mental fortitude to change the fact that something had changed between the girls. Whether it was a feeling of being deserted by the other, or a broken thread of trust. Luna hadn't spoken to Evy as frequently as before. She tried to busy her mind and body by filling it with Bats training and Simon, but there was that essential part of her still missing.
Luna had suggested Evy come round during the Easter holidays, but Evy had suggested they get a drink instead. Probably for the best - they would be less likely to get into it in a public space. Though Luna wondered if they needed to get into it in order to get past it. The dinner they'd had earlier this year had been nothing short of catastrophic, and had pushed the two groups of best friends further than ever. If Nate even was a best friend to Simon - that, Luna wouldn't even try to understand.
In the end, Luna was the first to enter the little bar, her blonde hair tied back in a neat plait, a glass of wine before her and a bottle of wine set to chill for the girls to enjoy. She tried to appear casual and collected, but couldn't help glancing up each time the door opened. At last, Evy arrived, and Luna offered her friend a tight smile. "Evy," she greeted, her tone warmer than she had expected. A good start. "I've got us a bottle. I figure we could both use it," said Luna. She lapsed into silence, wondering if Evy expected her to go through the small talk first. No, she wouldn't. "It was silly of me to think that Simon and Nate could be in the same room without trying to out snark one another. Let's avoid that in the future, shall we?" said Luna, her stormy gaze lifting to meet Evy's.

I was one thing now I'm being another There had been the temptation to simply reside on Luna’s couch for the entirety of the break, mainly to avoid going home. Her mother was still drinking far too much, and her father barely seemed to exist at times. Christmas was still fresh in all of their minds, and not spending some time with Sarah the day before had helped. She wished her brother was still around to ask him questions. He would have tried his best to calm her nerves or settle whatever might be bothering her. But he wasn’t here, and how could any of them comfort one another when they were all equally shaken?
Something like this wasn’t meant to be bottled up, but who could she talk to since she and Luna had drifted apart? The other friends she mainly spoke to had a different perspective and sense of family, making it weird to discuss these things. Luna, however, seemed to understand. Evy was the forgotten youngest child who would always appear twelve in her family’s eyes, while Luna was one of three, doomed to never have her own identity. And they’d always had each other. Had. Evelyn approached Luna, who was already enjoying a glass of wine, but her tone was friendly—normal. ”Luna.” Evy responded, equally as warm.
And Ev couldn’t help but agree, as she nodded in agreement. A drink was never a bad idea. And thankfully, some things didn’t change as Luna got straight to one of the points. ”Boys are just more trouble than they’re worth sometimes, aren’t they?” Evy’s opinion of Simon had not changed. Her own of dear Nathaniel could vary. It was clear they could not take them anywhere. Some of it felt so natural, and yet there was another small break where it was only silence and the noise of the other patrons around them. ”I considered staying at school for the break.” Evy spoke. It was the truth, it would have been easier than figuring out how to avoid the obvious awkwardness at home, but then she remembered how much she hated school.

There was an equal warmth to Evy's tone, and Luna felt relief wash over her. This had all spiraled from a silly idea, and a simple misunderstanding. Evy's nod was enough to spur Luna into pouring her friend a glass, and taking a further sip of her own. Her grey gaze searched Evy's, surveying to see if they could fix the strange problem between them as easily as she hoped. And there it was - the olive branch. Luna's face relaxed into a grin. "You're telling me," she agreed, lifting her glass to Evy. "Makes you wonder why we keep them around," she added.
Luna was certain that Evy still disapproved of Simon. After all, her boyfriend hadn't exactly been the picture of good behaviour upon their last visit. Luna was certain that Simon had slid dangerously low on Evy's approval ratings, much as Nate had with Luna. Yet the difference was that Simon was Luna's official boyfriend and Nate was... well, Luna wasn't sure. But the wound was too fresh to dig into now, Luna decided. "I'm glad you didn't. I've been in desperate need of girl time and... well, I missed you."
A year ago, Luna never would have admitted weakness. It was what had set her apart from her sisters - she was strong, and tried to be as different and individual as possible. It was originally what had drawn Evy and Luna together. They had both been a swirl of family, and they both wanted freedom. "You're almost done now. Are you going to write?" asked Luna, recalling the conversation over a year ago about Evy's future. They had differed there - Luna had always known what she wanted whereas Evy had been more unsure. Luna frowned. "You're not going to the ministry with Sarah, right?" she added sharply. Luna knew Evy's eldest sister vaguely, but there was something off about the eldest Oliveira. Luna couldn't quite put her finger on it... but it was there.

I was one thing now I'm being another Evelyn didn’t want to be at odds with someone she considered her best friend. A person Evy used to speak so frankly with about life and all her insecurities—well, most of them, anyway. Still, at least at this point, they could agree. Evy was not entirely convinced Luna meant it unless she and Simon had gotten into some disagreement. But that didn’t seem likely for these lovebirds—a thought that made Evy want to roll her eyes, but she refrained for the sake of harmony. Something that had been lacking in her life as of late.
”They have their uses.” Evy added with a light shrug. But not any use that wasn’t available anywhere else. But enough of that topic, this was girl time—as Luna noted. A slight smile appeared on Evy’s stoic expression, though even if she hadn’t, Luna would have been able to read any change in her own cloudy eyes. ”I missed you too. I imagine you’re very busy. I didn’t want to bother you.” A little bit of a lie, but sitting and walking around bitterly did take up a considerable amount of energy. And Evy wasn’t wanting for girl time—she had Nessa at school. Someone else who hated the school as much as Evy did, a new friend to complain about life with.
Evy’s eyes grew a little wide. She’d actually forgotten. ”Yes.” Her response was quick. How had she forgotten to tell Luna about her application to work at The Daily Prophet? Merlin—wait. Suddenly Evy remembered why. The dinner. ”No, I don’t think I could stand being in that place for that many hours in a day.” The Ministry and its underground structures felt like some kind of cage. ”I’ve actually applied to work at the Prophet. I forgot to tell you before.” Evy wanted to write, even if writer’s block followed her around like some sad little raincloud as of late—maybe being back home would help. ”It’ll be nice to be back home near my family. Although I might room with Sarah rather than go home.” She looked down at the table's surface, an uncomfortable lump forming in her throat. Christmas still felt fresh in her mind, but for now, she did her best to clear the thought with some wine. ”I’ll be able to attend a match or two.”

Evy's stoic expression cleared as Luna admitted that she had missed her best friend. Luna had worried that perhaps she'd been replaced. After all, Luna had left school to play for the Bats, and Evy had been shipped off to Beauxbatons. Surely, she'd made new friends. Had Nessa become the close confidant that Luna had been only a year ago? Luna searched Evy's face, the one she knew so well from hours and hours spent together. Luna made a face at Evy's admission that she didn't want to bother. "I imagine being tucked away in the French mountains doesn't help the distance case either," said Luna wryly. It was good to see Evy again, to feel the tension roll off her shoulders.
Luna commented that Evy was nearly done with school - only one term left. She asked if Evy had applied for the Prophet, having remembered that her friend enjoyed writing. "Thank Merlin, I don't know if I could bare it, seeing your life drained out of you as a ministry drone," said Luna with a half smile. Luna didn't add that she was glad Evy wouldn't have to see much of Sarah, Evy's sister who had always given her a bit of a... bad vibe. She couldn't quite place her finger on it. "That's amazing, what will you be working on?" said Luna, the relief evident in her voice. "Hopefully things that allow you to travel to amazing places?" she added, tilting her head slightly.
Luna's expression darkened at Evy's mention of her sister. "I'm sure there are lots of options. London is a big city," said Luna, unsure of if she managed to keep her voice even or not. "Free tickets for you whenever you like," she added, taking a deep drink. She didn't want to think about Sarah, or Evy spending too much time with her. "Maybe you can jump from Prophet to famous author," she added after a moment, glancing over at Evy. "You can write my biography when I'm famous - youngest female Quidditch player in a century. Oh, maybe I'll make the England team," she added, more to herself than anything.

I was one thing now I'm being another There was never a warning about how much would and could change when school was over. Evy and Luna were supposed to have another year to figure that part out, but Luna’s plans had changed, and Evy had been shipped off to France. New faces entered their respective lives, and eighteen felt so different from seventeen. If you had told a twelve-year-old Evy that she would have defended Nessa from Luna’s criticism, she would have said you were mad. Truthfully, Evy simply had not known Nessa well until recently, and she was grateful to have a friend and ally at Beauxbatons. The Nate connection wasn’t lost on her either, not that it was a prevalent topic for the girls while at school.
”Well, not for much longer.” Thankfully, her final year was almost over. She’d be let loose into the world in less than two months. An adult like her siblings and the classes before her. Not that it stopped her family from ever only seeing her as the youngest as if she was still running around as Sebastian did. The Ministry had never been an actual consideration but merely a backup plan if nothing else came to fruition. ”They haven’t assigned me yet.” There were three possibilities for internships. ”Sports is the most competitive, followed by General News and the Support.” Evy explained, pausing to drink some of her wine. ”But Support handles international news, so it might be interesting if I’m not simply serving everyone tea.” It wasn’t a secret that interns were at the bottom of the food chain, but she hoped to have interesting opportunities.
Evy frowned slightly. Rooming with her oldest sister was the easy solution. ”Its all rather expensive, isn’t it?” She drank more wine. The cost was astounding, but it was London after all. ”I don’t know how often I’d see her anyway. She travels quite a bit for work.” Interpol was international, after all. Plus long hours, as Evy had noted. ”And my other sisters are in London as well, but they already room together.” And three was a crowd. She didn’t need Callisto hovering over her every move or wondering why she was arriving home late. But Evy shook her head. Journalism and writing novels were two different tracks. ”Maybe.” She grinned encouragingly at her friend. ’Only if there is a chapter on how a certain Chaser was knocked off his broom by a targeted bludger.’ Evy thought to herself.
”In any case, you should try for the team so you can move to London as well.” She couldn’t very well room with Sarah forever. How many siblings wanted their younger siblings hanging around all the time, especially with an age gap of nearly a decade? And Merlin knew she ended up in Nate’s bed flat more times than she cared to admit—that is when he was being a complete ass. Though she supposed she could ask Nessa, though her friend already seemed to have some arrangements, or so Evy had surmised.

Evy explained that she hadn't been set to a specific task yet, though she'd applied for an internship at the Prophet. Luna remembered that writing was something Evy loved - she even made a joke about how Evy could write her biography. Internally, Luna cringed, spiralling into a set of worrisome thoughts. Selene's voice echoed in her head, about how she always made things about her. She pursed her lips but said nothing for a moment. Luna considered throwing her weight around - if Evy wanted to write sports, wouldn't it be helpful to have a number of Quidditch players already in her back pocket? But Luna suspected Evy would rather write something of more substance...
Luna said nothing as Evy explained away how she would rarely see Sarah. "Still..." said Luna uncertainly, not sure how far she should probe into her bad feeling. She could have asked Selene or Phoebe, but she wasn't exactly on good terms with either of her sisters. "What is Nessa doing?" asked Luna in a strained voice - even though her distaste for Nessa was something of a sore subject, she was the lesser of two evils. At least Nessa was a familiar brand of badness, whereas Sarah was just a funny feeling.
Evy encouraged Luna to try for the national team. "Living in London would be much more ideal than this shite hole," said Luna with a frown. "But the publicity that would come with it..." she trailed off, remembering her encounters with a sallow skinned man who had unnerved her more than she had wanted to admit. "I don't know if I can handle it," she added in a small voice. "But having a friend at the Prophet would be handy," she added, brightening slightly.

I was one thing now I'm being another Luna had always encouraged Evy’s writing. And it had always been a fun hobby for Evy, an easy way to escape her thoughts and funnel them in a different direction. It never permanently helped, but plenty of other distractions helped with that. Still, writing for fun and for a profession was much different. As far as living situations went, Evy wasn’t terribly concerned—she had choices. And the worst one was going home to her parents, but it was an inexpensive roof over her head after all. So she couldn’t complain.
But Evy tried not to pause as a question about Nessa came up. She sipped her wine and waited until her glass was back down to answer. Part of her wanted to ask why she was so interested but perhaps later. ”I don’t think she’s decided yet.” She could always work with Nate in the village, or maybe she’d find a job in London since Nate also worked at the Ministry. Either way, Evy would not be surprised to find her near him. They were close, after all.
Evy’s eyes grew curious, her head tilting slightly. Even if they hadn’t spoken daily as they used to—there was something in her expression, much like the things Evy would note before but wait to speak on. Luna pushed her breakfast around or her other meals, the way she was so lightheaded after her practices. She’d seen it all but chosen when to bring it up. But between the look in Luna’s eye earlier and this sharing of doubt… ”Has it been that bad?” Aside from the most famous names she would hear students talk about, Evy didn’t have a clue what it was like for a professional player. ”Plus I’ll be in London before training starts.” Evy leaned forward encouragingly, giving Luna’s hand a light squeeze.

Despite her innate selfishness, Luna was able to put it aside to support Evy. Until, of course, she'd gotten so wrapped up in her own drama it was almost like nothing else existed. Evy hedged an answer about Nessa, and even though Luna had asked, she couldn't find it in herself to care. She felt strangely uneasy, despite Evy's familiarity. It was strange - had things always been like this? Or had she just been in her loved up bubble with Simon for so long that she had forgotten how to interact with others. Luna took a deep drink of her wine to save herself from answering. Thankfully, another topic sprung to hand, one with which Luna felt more confident to engage.
However, Luna showed her hand with her hesitation on taking on a higher level of fame. "I er... I don't think I'm seasoned enough for it," said Luna quickly, pouring herself and Evy more wine to have something to do with her hands. "I..." she started, then hesitated, taking a drink instead and nearly draining the glass in one. She couldn't meet Evy's eye - how could she explain what had happened to her mere weeks ago? Luna's stomach flipped. Evy was going to ask questions - she'd even figured out Luna's eating disorder. "You will be there," she agreed quietly, finally giving in.
At last, Luna fixed her gaze on Evy. She searched her face for any disdain, an expression the girls frequently wore but rarely with one another. "There was... an incident. With a young man. It turned rather nasty, you see... but there's a warrant for his arrest. The muggle way. I didn't... well, I didn't think the ministry would be interested..." said Luna, her stomach dropping to her knees as she allowed Evy to process the information.

I was one thing now I'm being another Things were beginning to feel a bit normal, or at least the flow of conversation. You spent years falling into a routine with yourself, your friends, and everything while at school. Even the summer break was quite the disruption, let alone your school burning to the ground. Naturally, Evy was happy for some semblance of that normalcy, even if there was that tiny part of her in her core that served as a reminder of the negative. ‘But, she went off with her boyfriend—without you.’ Evy shook the thought. Bringing that up now wouldn’t do either of them any good. She simply stuffed the thought somewhere next to the other feelings she ignored.
Evy always felt that she shared the particular skill of speaking quite frankly with one another—or simply when getting their point across to others. They were never one to mince their words. She left the vague and suggestive words for Nate when she was looking for his compliance. So, when Luna struggled to convey her message, she noted it. Evy sipped the last drops of wine in her glass before Luna busied herself with refilling it. Slowly, she drank more before letting her eyes linger on her best friend. Anyone would have been able to tell something was wrong by how she fidgeted and hesitated, but to Evy, she saw more than that.
”An incident? What kind of incident?” Her expression turned serious, and her heart sped up. What had happened? A feeling boiled up inside her, similar to her rage after the incident with Simon their last school year. Her mind went to the worst of it and then to wondering why she was only just hearing it now. ”Luna…” Evy inched a little bit closer, grabbing her friend’s hand gently. ”Why didn’t you tell me? Are you all right?” She settled her tone to something gentler than she was actually feeling. After all that had happened in Evy’s family over the past few years—things she thought she’d only ever read in novels or online as some anonymously written story or perhaps something she’d write herself.
Her mind went to the worst places, and she suddenly felt guilty that perhaps she’d been so busy distracting herself with untangling the complicated knot that was Nathaniel Forrester to realize something was wrong. ”I can talk to Sarah if you like. Surely she knows someone that can help.”

tw recollection of assault
Luna hated that prickling feeling at the back of her eyes. She absolutely hated feeling weak, and she refused to allow the tears to from. She took a deep breath, steeling herself. She tried not to think back on the night much - it had started out so fun though. But sometimes, when she was making coffee or drying her hands or surveying her very sexy boyfriend, the images surged to the surface. Luna didn't want to admit that she was broken, but she knew that she wasn't quite right.
"There was... a guy. Not yet a man, but more than a boy. Turns out he'd been stalking me and... well, he found me," she began, dropping her gaze to her fingers which were knotted in her lap. "And er..." The visuals surged up to the forefront of her mind again, and Luna dropped her face into the palms of her hands. "I had a vision of him jerking off to me and Simon," said Luna, her voice muffled by her hands. "And then ... then his... it got on me," she finished brokenly, unable to hold back the heaving sob that wrenched through her body.
Luna allowed herself only a minute of weakness, scrunching her eyes tight as she pushed the memories back into the box where she liked them to stay. She curled into herself for that minute, clutching her face, her muscles tense and shaking. After the minute was up, Luna took a deep breath and straightened. Her nose was red as well as her eyes, and the wetness from her eyes had stained her cheeks. She wiped them away quickly with a napkin, looking at Evy. She wasn't ashamed at what had happened to her - she was angry. Angry that she hadn't prevented it. But none of the ill will she bore was towards herself. "Like I said, I contacted the police. They've been helpful so far. But they can't provide me many updates. They have his identity and I'm sure they've made an arrest... I just... I don't think I can handle that sort of thing. And that sort of thing comes along with fame," she admitted weakly.

I was one thing now I'm being another It was enough to hear about the incident, but seeing Luna so shaken was just as surprising. They had always bonded from the start on their ability to remain composed, despite what they felt internally. Evy’s eyes had always made it easy to glare, they stood out brightly against her features, and the light often changed their color. But as Luna explained what had happened, they changed again, darkening. Not toward Luna, of course, but toward this assailant. There was still personal guilt underneath that anger. They had grown apart over something so stupid and trivial now; Evy hadn't been there for her.
The rest was even more shocking. To fathom such a thing happening to someone you know…she just couldn’t. For the moment, she could push aside the past in her mind. They’d never been the type to put on a grand display of emotions. Evy remembered breaking down slightly in the months after her brother died. Luna had been there for that. But since then, nothing like that. But Luna had been assaulted. After Luna finished, Evy moved closer, gently grabbing her hands. ”Luna, I’m so sorry…” She was sorry it had happened to her and that she hadn’t been there. She supposed Simon was good for something, at least.
Evy paused. How many times had Luna encouraged her? In her writing, especially. Evy had her sisters, and so did Luna, but they had always been close. ”Like I said, I’ll also be in London with you.” It wasn’t a sacrifice, just two friends watching out for one another. ”Don’t let him ruin this…” Evy spoke in a low voice, pausing. ” Don’t let this…fucking creep ruin this—ruin your dream.” For as long as Evy could remember, the train rides to Hogwarts were Luna speculating how many openings were on the House Team and if she could try out that year. While Evy wasn’t yet over being left alone at Beauxbatons, it didn’t mean Luna’s dream hadn’t mattered.

Luna hated the way she felt weak, hated the pity she was certain was lighting the eyes of those around her. She swiped away the tears and allowed Evy to take her hands, offering her best friend a watery smile. "I'm sorry too. For not fighting hard enough for us," she replied quietly. She knew there was nothing that could have been done with the stalker - she had done nothing to warrant it, the police had assured her. But she was afraid. Luna hated being afraid of anything. She had always struck out to be confident, assured, haughty. Better than anyone who let something as trivial as emotions rule their decisions. It was a trait that had bonded herself and Evy. And yet, with her admission, Luna felt herself cracking.
"I won't. I won't," said Luna, her voice strengthening as her spine straightened. She met Evy's gaze. "Yeah. You will be... I just... think I'll need a bit more time," she admitted slowly. "I want my dream. I want it so badly I can taste it. Just like you want yours. Will you promise... will you promise me you'll go after it?" asked Luna, her storm grey eyes catching the daytime blue of Evy's. "They're gonna find him and lock him up and I'll be free." Luna just had to keep reminding herself that, not dwelling on the possibility that there could be another one around the corner. "But we're meant to be having fun!" said Luna, the smile she slapped on her face as forced as the fact that Phoebe had been placed in Slytherin. After a moment it faltered, but Luna drank anyways. "When did the world get so fucked up?" she asked Evy.

I was one thing now I'm being another It was part of the tragedy that it took such events to bring one back down to Earth. Back from the clouds and daydreams and thoughts. Everything seemed so trivial now. Evy felt a pang of slight guilt, but it clashed with that resentment at being left behind. She’d let it go for now. And it seemed so silly what they had let get between them. Evy had just been so tired of feeling alone. There weren’t many people she felt she could lean on entirely in her life. Her sisters were there, but they had their own lives. Plus, who knew what was the truth in that realm anymore?
More lies, more secrets. While Evy had debated telling Luna any of the details of Christmas, she knew it was best to keep it to herself now. Telling somebody outside the family made it that much more real. But she was glad Luna had apologized. Evy had been left behind for Quidditch and a boy when she’d done nothing wrong. But at least now, they were moving back into familiar territory. But what was her dream? Evy’s eyes locked with Luna’s. ”Yes, of course, I will.” Whatever that dream ended up being since Evy still had no idea what was three steps ahead of her still. How did you create a goal when the foundation of everything felt like a lie?
”I think it always was.” Evy drank from her glass. She had the urge to feel that lightheaded bliss in her brain. Evy sighed, pausing as her own thoughts turned turbulent. She wanted to tell Luna about Dakoda so badly, but it stuck in her throat. ”Everything goes to shit when its finally going well” The other shoe always dropped. Always. Whether it was school, her family, or Nate—the bumps in the road never stopped.
