So the real punishment wasn’t the detention or the fact that Juniper scared the hell out of her, but that the Hufflepuff girl had supposedly struck a deal with Rhys to be his new Potions partner. What in Merlin’s good name was that kind of play? Was it because McGonagall viewed her and Sarah as incompetent fools now? Or just a way to be petty and really drive it in that she didn’t trust either of them around a cauldron anymore. Nell stopped sweeping as Rhys explained all of this, and she felt like she’d been hit by a ton of bricks. It almost sounded more like he agreed with their classmate and was also using this as a way to get back at the two of them for messing up. At least he was saying it now instead of breaking the news to her during the next class period.
Dumbfounded and slightly hurt about this, Nell stared at him in silence. They’d been Potions partners for literal years. And all of that to go away because of one mistake she’d made when he wasn’t there. She had forgotten Sarah was there too, until she saw motion out of the corner of her eye. Whining about the decision to Rhys in front of her was only going to draw more criticism. She’d already caused what put the two of them in detention. Making a bigger show out of it now wouldn’t help her at all.
”Yeah, alright,” she finally said after a moment, defeated by this new revelation. Clearly Juniper was still holding it against her despite all of the apologies she’d made already. What did she want? Nell could grovel if that worked. It did for her sister sometimes. The two of them weren’t the same at all, but sometimes strong personalities really required a bit of extra work to get back in good graces. Turning back to her corner, she started to clean again. All she wanted to do now was be done with the detention.
