Max knew that Rhys wasn't in complete agreement with her—nor was he ever, really—but he mentioned that Vas was working anyway, which meant that he wouldn't be able to have a serious conversation of the sort that they needed for a while, at least. With that solved (or set aside), she wasn't needed as a sounding board.
She also wasn't needed for anything else that Rhys might have wanted or required. He was going to shower and get something to eat, he told her. Max knew that wouldn't fix everything, but getting cleaned up and fed would help his frame of mind. "Thanks for dropping by."
"Of course," Max replied with a slight smile. "It's my job, you know?" Someone had to look after him.
