▲ If she were to be completely honest, she agreed with Rhys and didn't fully understand how her sister had managed to have such a flippant lifestyle. To say it irked her was an understatement. Juniper figured a career change after a year or two was fairly normal, at least based on what she had heard from adults, and even not being fully invested as an intern and switching departments made sense. But her sister had been doing this since she graduated, and being an intern for six years sounded horrid. Fetching coffee and writing letters for department heads didn't sound interesting at all. Scarily, it matched up with her ever rotating cast of characters she called her friends and partners. It was sort of mind boggling, and even as a first year Juniper knew none of this was normal to witness during Christmas break. "Like I said, she's a bit of an enigma." And not in the good way at all. So she had assumed correctly that going to the Astronomy Tower would be breaking out at night. The idea of bending the rules like that made her shift in her seat uncomfortably. It didn't help that Rhys immediately asked, or presumed rather, that she had done such a thing before. "I've never had a reason to..." she answered quietly. No sneaking into the library to get another book, no reason to go to the kitchens since she always ate everything she needed at dinner, and certainly not for the friends that she didn't have. "Do you think we could get a letter from the Astronomy professor ahead of time? Just in case?" Merlin she was going to sound like such a worry wart. Ruining the perfect record of zero detentions would be like having the world collapse around her. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

have you no idea that you're in deep? Despite how Rhys wished he had siblings and family, he felt there was a trend with his friends and older sisters. And younger siblings varied. Nell didn’t mention her younger brother that often, but the kid would sometimes find them in the hallways when everyone was walking to their classes. He seemed far less nervous than Nell usually was. But the idea that one would accept a decent internship only to switch to something else felt…unappreciative. That was the first word that came to mind, but Rhys kept his comments to himself like he usually did about these things.
Rhys looked on curiously as Juniper’s expression changed. Instead of that stern, confident expression she typically wore, there was a mix of slight confusion and uncertainty. It fascinated Rhys, if only because it was that rare. Still, he had to suppress a grin at her suggestion. He found it honestly endearing how she appeared so innocent in these moments. ”We could.” Rhys shrugged, sitting up in his chair a bit and leaning forward just a little bit—as if he was going to share a secret with her very soon. ”But that isn’t as fun.” With that, he grinned just slightly. Had Rhys been caught over the break? Yes, of course, he had, but the Professors didn’t typically issue detentions and merely let them off with a warning and stern stare.
”You know, the kitchens are technically off-limits.” So if they wanted those rare cinnamon cookies Rhys had been talking about earlier—that would also be breaking a rule. Despite his internal excitement at not being alone for two weeks and spending it with someone he did like talking to, he was also ready to bend those little rules without her while she waited in her Common Room. ”We would be sneaking in there as well.” His blue eyes scanned her expression for any indication of a response. Those that followed the rules as if they were magical law tended to dig their feet in the longer they spent at Hogwarts. Sometimes.

▲ Readjusting in her seat as she contemplated the pros and cons of getting permission, asking for permission and getting denied, or outright breaking school rules, was the only way to keep herself from blabbering on about each to Rhys. This was technically the sort of thing she wanted to work towards in being more personable. All well-rounded students broke the rules, right? Basically if Rhys was fine doing it, then there couldn't be that much of an issue with it in the long run. Most of her nerves surrounded never doing anything incorrectly in her life, which only conflated the current predicament she found herself in. But if she was with Rhys, what was the worst that could happen? Sneaking up to the Astronomy Tower to stargaze was hardly a crime and she was sure with a little research beforehand she could learn something from it. "Still...permission would be better," she commented, unable to help herself from saying it. And then Rhys dropped the biggest realization bomb on her: the kitchens were off-limits. She stared at him blankly, her brain already trying to construct a strategy for how it technically wasn't rule breaking if the house elves invited her in. No one could ever be mad at the sweet little creatures, and the offers of food were impossible to refuse. "I-I guess both are fine then," Juniper struggled to say, every part of her wanting to revert back to the normal way she went about things. The look Rhys was giving her was indicative of the fact that he already knew she was going to give in and agree to go. And once she became aware of his eyes, it was all over. It always was. That was the only way he'd gotten her to move on certain topics, this being yet another one to add to the list. Capitulating did help her experience new things though... MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

have you no idea that you're in deep? Spending months with someone consistently by your side made finding patterns in that person easy. Much like Rhys knew Nell and Sarah well just as they knew him, Rhys was beginning to know Juniper a little better. So, this fidgeting and less than confident tone was one of those rare things he saw from time to time. She was a confident girl, always sure in her answers and approach. She was right, however. Permission was always better, but Rhys had gotten so used to not asking about things like that—he was often told no anyway. But there was always that fine line. Encouraging Juniper to sneak out with him, but if she were that set on not breaking that rule, he would hardly force her. Rhys could go alone.
Her answer wasn’t one said with confidence. Rhys paused as he thought it through. It wasn’t a big deal. ”You can always change your mind.” He added, voice calm. As much as he would have liked not to spend those moments alone—he would always be sensitive to forcing anyone to do anything they didn’t want to. Rhys thought of his own life and how other people's choices, namely his father, had led to his existence. Choices that Fenrir had made alone for everyone, such as Rhys’ mother. Still, he’d gotten his hopes up just a tiny amount. But he always felt it regardless. But he tried not to let it show as he leaned back and looked away.
Rhys would move past it just like he did most things. But now he had to ask. ”You ever take a risk, June?” He asked, eyes landing on her again. Rhys went with her name rather than the usual ‘McGonagall’ this time. The answer didn’t particularly matter, but he was curious now.

▲ Despite being told that she didn't need to make a final decision here and now, and even if she did there was the choice to back out or change how she wanted to go about it, Juniper felt like she had already settled on what she wanted to do. Breaking past the preconceived notions that she was a stiff, lifeless working machine was difficult. First she had to convince herself that she wasn't always like that. Sneaking out after hours and deciding to stay for Christmas break were merry going to be the start of her divergence of where she'd been before the Potions accident. Permission be damned! If she got in trouble once it wasn't going to kill her. There would probably be some disappointment from her parents but at least her siblings wouldn't think she was a robot anymore. Juniper nodded her head silently to show that she understood that she had options if she so desired. "Not really..." she responded meekly. It felt weird hearing her name shortened by someone outside of her family, despite her saying it was fine. Usually she was just McGonagall to everyone, which worked just as well. "Unless you count standing next to Ollivander in Potions a risk," she quickly added. Juniper was joking, of course, though she had no idea how to show that through inflections in her voice. It came out sounding rather serious and aggressive unfortunately. Everything always had to be by the book and without flaws, her own self-imposed perfection that was never tuned down because her parents and professors liked it a lot. Even she enjoyed seeing the high marks on essays and exams. But she was also starting to learn that there were other things that gave her the same serotonin boost that schoolwork gave her. Like being around Rhys. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

have you no idea that you're in deep? Rhys was almost sure that Juniper’s comment wasn’t entirely serious. Her tone made it difficult to tell sometimes. Like if you met someone with an arid sense of humor and it wasn’t immediately noted when they were telling a joke. And Rhys had made the mistake of making a small joke on that note to Nell before, which led to Nell almost storming off to find Juniper again to apologize profusely. Rhys had managed to stop her and clarify that he’d been joking. Since then, he’d avoided making off-hand jokes that he’d partnered with Juniper to avoid Nell spilling a random potion on him.
”I always thought Sarah was the greater risk.” Rhys muttered off-handedly. And it wasn’t anything he wouldn’t say to Sarah directly. Much to the shock of his classmates, who all tended to move very quickly out of the way when they saw her. While Rhys would never challenge Sarah, he supposed there was something about werewolves watching out for one another that made them close. But Rhys felt surprisingly content. Assuming her plans didn’t change, she went home for the break. It felt like a small weight had lifted, though he cautiously noted it.
He heard more noise than usual, chairs moving. Typically, that was an indicator that it was either time for class or a meal. Glancing at the clock—dinner. And to nobody’s surprise, Rhys was starving. He spoke as he began to put his notes into his textbook haphazardly. ”I told Sarah I’d meet her before dinner.” It was that time, again. A week's worth of that awful tasting potion, at least eating after, helped a bit. He put his book in his bag and slung it on his shoulder. ”I’ll see you in Potions.” Rhys looked at his Potions partner, giving her half a grin. Potions was their first class after breakfast.
