right here with me where it truly lies Rhys didn’t feel any different. He was of age now, finally seventeen and able to explore more of his little world, but there weren’t many places he wanted to go. But in case he did, well, it was just easier now. Unfortunately, his birthday always fell exactly a week before the school year started. At least it was his last one, which was exciting and terrifying simultaneously. His routine for the past seven years had become a comfort to him. Seeing his friends on the train ride and at school, they had classes together. Naturally, adjustments would be made as NEWT exams approached, plus something was different.
Nell still glared at him the entire train ride home, but since the girl knew nothing of subtlety Rhys easily brushed it off. But really, she had been the main one who had wondered what in the world had happened over Christmas break where Rhys Greyback was now dating Juniper McGonagall. As far as everyone else? Rhys had grown so accustomed to ignoring everyone’s opinion that didn’t antagonize him to punch them in the face. Rhys waited outside the Leaky Cauldron. Juniper should be arriving soon. They’d made plans to finish up their school shopping, Potions supplies were needed after all, and he just wanted some time with her before they were surrounded by everybody at school.

▲ Assuming that the previous school year was all the self-introspection and growth that she needed to shed her piss-poor attitude and personality was such a pipe dream that she hadn’t even taken her siblings into account. Making one friend, and subsequently dating him, apparently didn’t count in their eyes. Her sister had laughed hysterically, thinking it was a joke at first. Ewan had more tact when it came to this sort of thing, but it still caused her to lose it for a little bit. She knew she was seen as the golden child of the family – the one that could do no wrong and was allowed to do whatever she wanted. Progress had been made in recognizing that, but now she had to figure out how to win her siblings back. Apparently seventeen years of her getting all the attention had led to more serious issues than she had ever realized. Needless to say, the summer break ended at the end of the week and she still hadn’t figured out a way to fix things. Trying to wrangle both of them would be difficult with their work schedules, especially now that things were ramping up with the start of Hogwarts once again… Distracting herself and utilizing maybe the last of her carte blanche freedom before she was going to be forced to find a job the following summer, Juniper had plans to meet Rhys at Diagon Alley to do the last bit of school shopping with him. These were mostly little things, like ingredients for Potions and a new set of quills. Somehow she was fine on ink jars but all of her quills had disappeared. The only place they could have been left had to be the nightstand in her dorm, which meant they were off to the place that all lost items of Hogwarts went. The house elves would never steal, of course, and Juniper had a theory that there was some sort of invisible creature that stalked underneath beds for loose socks and other items, and perpetually lived in the hundreds of empty classrooms the castle had. A crackpot theory, though she was positive she had read about it in The Quibbler once. Getting to Diagon from Hogsmeade meant using floo powder since she didn’t have an apparation license yet. Luckily they had planned to meet at the Leaky Cauldron, which was her exact destination. Brushing off the soot that had managed to streak its way up her left arm, she deftly moved through the crowded pub and outside. “Hey!” she called at Rhys as she spotted him almost immediately and made her way to his side. “The Floo Network is going to be so overloaded later. I can’t believe everyone is still trying to do their shopping…” Juniper added as she reached to hold his hand. They were still shopping too, but obviously it was everyone else’s fault for doing the same and not hers. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Rhys heard her voice before he saw her. But that was expected. She would be easily lost in a large crowd. And the few weeks before the start of the term were the busiest for Diagon Alley. New students getting sized for robes, looking at owls, and getting their supplies. And the most important thing—a wand. Rhys made a mental note to drop by and see if he could say hello to Nell, though he didn’t want to get her in trouble with her sister. Maybe a quick wave through the window would suffice until he saw her on the train in a few days.
Her hand slipped easily into his own, which all felt so natural now—more than it had initially. Rhys wasn’t the biggest fan of the Floo Network. All that ash and soot everywhere? He’d never found the appeal, but it was still popular. Fortunately, he was parked at the Leaky Cauldron until he left for school. ”You mean like us?” They certainly fell into that category, though most of their major shopping was completed. Rhys needed more crystal vials. Slowly during the last two years, he’d managed to break or lose all of his. And Nell had begun to hoard hers.
”We can stop by Fortescue’s later.” Rhys suggested. He’d stopped by before, and while he wasn’t one for crowds, the chaos there didn’t particularly bother him. They walked toward the familiar buildings. While it was abuzz with activity, Rhys knew it would worsen later. ”Nell and I tried their new firewhiskey ice cream. I liked it.” Since Rhys had been here for a few days, it had been easy to find Nell at her family’s shop. Though the challenge then was finding free time in her schedule, Veronica kept her pretty busy. But aside from that, Rhys had taken to flipping through his textbooks, trying to glance ahead at what the year would throw at them. Charms would be busy, though interesting, though he wondered if showing teenagers locking and anti-unlocking charms was a good idea.

▲ “…yeah like us,” Juniper instantly relented. That wasn’t a winning attitude to have today, because she would only fuel her own frustration with it if she kept it up, which would in turn ruin the entire day. Exuding frustration in the crowded alleyways was literally the worst thing in the world. This was also part of her attempt at reprogramming how she handled other people. Learning to be calm and nice with others, and not overriding everything they said or did with what she knew was correct, was the first step. She managed it with Rhys, so she knew she could do it for strangers as well. Accepting the fact that neither of them were special in the middle of Diagon Alley helped too. Rhys offered up the idea to go to the ice cream parlor later, which instantly grabbed her attention away from the crowds. She wanted to try a flavor that was called ‘Cadaver Coffee’. Supposedly it had so much caffeine in it that it could wake the dead. Or so the card underneath the bucket said. When she had been earlier in the summer to get the majority of her supplies, she stopped in with her parents and had ordered the usual plain chocolate, only seeing the coffee ice cream after the fact. It had been wriggling its way through her head since she and Rhys agreed on this date. Rhys went on to say that he had tried a firewhiskey flavor the last time he’d been, which certainly sounded interesting. “Do they add actual alcohol to it?” she asked, knowing that probably wasn’t the case but allowing her brain to be dumb for a moment. They most likely just recreated the flavoring used for the drink. “So where first?” Juniper quickly followed up. “I need quills and ingredients for Potions. And want to stop by Flourish & Blotts if there isn’t a line out the…” She stopped herself short as she realized then that she could actually see the line into the bookstore already, having mistaken it for just a slow moving crowd. It sort of was, in a way. “Maybe after ice cream?” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Rhys normally would have grumbled about dealing with such crowds, but he kept his opinions to himself. Though it took so much energy to be positive, he didn’t want his attitude to ruin their day. He hadn’t realized how much his friends let him be, especially when he was having an off day or it was right before a full moon. But Juniper had never been shy about asking him what the hell was wrong with him. And for the most part, that made him a little self-aware, not that he could stop it any less.
He thought about the ice cream he had tried. No, they would serve alcoholic ice cream. Would they? That wasn’t exactly the family-friendly image for which the ice cream parlor was known. ”No, but it’s a good way to attract attention.” Not that Fortescue’s needed the extra publicity. It caught Rhys’ attention when he walked by the new sign a few days ago. Butterbeer was another favorite, but he was becoming rather attached to that new fire whiskey flavor. But they had to decide where to shop first before ice cream.
He raised an eyebrow at the crowd at the bookstore. That looked like it would take hours. Even magic had its limitations, he supposed. ”I need a few things for Potions. We can stop by for quills on the way.” If he recalled, the stationary shop was next to Malkin’s. But for the shops that Rhys hardly visited, he had to think for an extra minute. They began to walk, and he glanced over at the girl who had quickly become a big part of his life. He felt good as if things were looking up for him more and more as the days went by. ”Obscurus Books is near the Apothecary, right?” Rhys could see the storefront in his mind, but the path to get there was foggy. If it didn’t have a line like Flourish & Blotts, maybe the book she was after wasn’t there, but they had other books to look at.

▲ Firewhiskey ice cream was absolutely a great way to draw in the crowds. Crowds of teenagers thinking they were about to get drunk without anyone realizing it. Even if it did contain alcohol, she doubted that a double-scoop would be anywhere close to the amount needed. Not that she knew, of course because she had always been too busy being straight laced to the point where the most adventurous things she'd done in life had only happened over the last eight months. She could thank Rhys for that. It also made her look normal, and a few other classmates started seemed to see it that way as well. Building that trust back up again was difficult though. Maybe by their ten year class reunion everyone would simply forget. That would be the easiest solution to it all. Passing by the line for the bookstore, Juniper saw at least a dozen familiar faces though none of their names were memorable. That was mainly on her though. Rhys thankfully distracted her by saying he needed ingredients for Potions as well, and a quick stop for her much needed quills we're before that. "Based on what we need to get, it looks like we have to brew veritaserum this year. I've been looking forward to that." Mostly because she wanted to test it on Rhys in class. She had been brainstorming questions all summer, writing down her best ones in her potions notebook. Rhys then mentioned stopping by Obscurus Books, which confused her slightly. Where was that? "I've never been before...didn't know there was another bookstore here..." Well, there was another in Knockturn but she wasn't allowed there. That had been the number one rule she had to follow since her parents started to give her free reign in Diagon. But if there happened to be another, she definitely wanted to check it out. Shops off the beaten track or on Horizont Alley tended to have a wider range of products and were almost always quieter. "Quills first it is then," she said happily. Getting her most important item out of the way first meant being able to actually shop the rest of the day. And pay attention to Rhys. Both were equally important. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Rhys hadn’t had a chance to look through his potions textbook just yet. He’d been focused on charms and defense against the dark arts, plus the book that Juniper had gotten him for Christmas. It was a beast of a book, but in the best way. Cursebreaking as a profession seemed fascinating. It was a combination of advanced magic in terms of Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts but with more history and research required. Rhys still hoped he could get into a prestigious field. Perhaps something in Law Enforcement, the NEWTs were all the same. He’d done well on his OWLs, so he figured his hard work would pay off when the exams arrived at the end of the year.
”Really?” Veritaserum fascinated the students, naturally. It seemed strange to teach seventh years how to brew such a regulated product. Rumors always swirled about that particular class. The Common Room became alight with stories of people making a fool of themselves in class or scandalous secrets revealed. It was the living embodiment of a teenager’s worst nightmare—the truth in truth or dare. For Rhys, he honestly couldn’t decide which one was worse. ”I haven’t looked through the book yet. Should be interesting.” It wasn’t something he was excited about. The potions aspect, sure, but that was all.
”it’s a small shop near Ollivanders.” Most walked right by it. Their eyes focus instead on the ancient wand shop. Maybe they could see if Nell was free (unlikely) or wave through the window. Rhys knew that Nell still wasn’t thrilled with the arrangement in Potions class, but she only brought it up once a month instead of every three days like she used to. Rhys nodded, acknowledging they would go to the stationary shop first. It wasn’t far in front of them now. The sign was hard to miss. It was stylized in a delicate script that appeared to be written into thin air repeatedly. People exited the shop, and Rhys held the door to let Juniper in first, and he followed. It always seemed excessive to him. One just needed basic quills, ink, and parchment, but the items he saw here looked too expensive to even write with or write on. He would just wander nearby while Juniper bought what she needed.

▲ Knowing something that Rhys didn't (yet) always gave her a fuzzy feeling of victory, even if it wasn't a competition. She was more inclined to read through the textbooks ahead of time, hoping to get a leg up. Rhys, on the other hand, knew way more about history and things she normally considered non-magical, even if they inherently were. At the end of the day, he filled her in on topics that she never thought about looking into and she liked to think she did the same with her 'lessons'. "We have to brew the antidote to it too, apparently. So I'm betting we get to test it out and then have to cure one another." It made sense. Past potions requiring antidotes were done the same way. If the lesson turned out to be that, she was definitely going to hold off on giving the antidote as long as possible. Oh the things she could ask... Near Ollivander's sort of helped, but there were tons of tiny shops in that area of the alley. Plus she had a feeling Nell would immediately pinpoint them walking by and make a scene. Juniper hadn't figured out what the other girl's deal was yet, whether it was jealousy or that Nell felt there was contention between them, but it had to be cleared up at some point. Not when they had a date though. This sort of trivial nonsense could wait until they were all back at school. An argument over toast in the Great Hall sounded appropriate. Air it all out so the whole school could see. She didn't think she was bitter, but Ollivander really got on her nerves sometimes. Apparently it was too much to just be happy that Rhys was happy. Entering the stationary shop, she thanked Rhys for getting the door. Compared to how some of the other stores were, this one was fairly empty. That boded well for her because there were very specific quills she wanted, and the less picked over the place was the better her chances. The brightly colored Fwooper feather quills were easy to locate, and a variety pack of the four colors was offered. Grabbing two, giving her a total of eight quills, she found Rhys quickly and held the packs in front of his face, "I've been trying to get these for ages! Fwooper feathers are so hard to come by..." She felt like she could talk about them for almost as long as she'd been searching in stores. "Merlin they're adorable..."MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Rhys couldn’t pinpoint how he felt about this particular Potions lesson. Brewing Veritaserum and allowing a student to test the potion and verify if their antidote was correct…somehow Rhys would rather his face turn green. At least he could keep all his secrets where they were. Assuming they kept their current Potions partners, it would probably be all right. By nature, Rhys was a very private person. He shared few details outside of his circle of very close friends, and they didn’t even know everything. Eight months later, Rhys had slowly begun to share small tidbits with Juniper, but he wasn’t in a rush.
”What happens if the antidote is wrong?” Potion's side effects could vary from something mild, like a stomach ache or sneezing thirty-eight times in a row. But they could be very harmful, obviously. The mark on Juniper’s leg was evidence of that. Hopefully, the Professor could verify it somehow first. But Rhys’ real worry was being stuck in that state of truth-telling long that needed. He noted to himself to ask Nell if she knew anything about this lesson, or maybe Sarah could ask her brother about it since he’d just graduated.
But aside from the anxiety of a truth-telling potion, Rhys felt alright. Staying at the Leaky Cauldron was not his dream, but rules were rules when one turned seventeen. But he was closer to friends and people he knew in Diagon Alley. Nell was still incredibly busy, but it had been nice to catch up a few days before. Plus, she seemed relaxed, unlike during the school year. Rhys had assumed that the potions incident with Juniper had rattled her, but it was almost a year now. She would get tense and very serious when Juniper had been around, but hopefully, a new year meant a new start.
Rhys was looking slightly sideways at a very brightly multicolored quill when Juniper hurried over to show him more quills. He blinked a few times, unable to see them as they were right in his face. She was very excited about these, so he grabbed one pack to look at it further. ”They’re nice.” A quill was a quill as far as he was concerned. ”They’re—um—very bright.” Rhys hardly thought about magical animals, if he was being honest, so he’d forgotten that Fwoopers could be a variety of bright colors.

▲ "I...I don't actually know," Juniper answered honestly. Such an admission was painful, but it had been happening a lot more since she and Rhys started dating. That was what she called progress. Obviously there were topics where she knew everything. There just happened to be outliers sometimes at the higher class levels. That and the textbook didn't explicitly state what would happen if the antidote was off. She assumed that the veritaserum eventually wore off on its own as most ended up doing. Telling what you assumed to be the truth for an extended period of time couldn't be all that bad. At least she didn't see anything wrong with it. "We could ask one of the potioneers when we get our ingredients. They might know," Juniper offered instead. That was their job after all. If everything went sideways after graduating - with an attempt to get a job suited for Transfiguration - becoming a potioneer was a close second on her career checklist. Being able to recite the antidote to veritaserum off the top of her head didn't seem like the type of thing one would need to know on a daily basis anyways. Just nice? They were literally multi-colored Fwooper feather quills! Not only were they light and easy to write with (fitting into her hands easily), but they were enormous and flashy. She enjoyed the way they sort of flailed around when she raised her hand in class, making the whole thing more of a show than it needed to be. "Right, but that's what makes them special. They need an equal amount of feathers for each color. Like if they can't find a yellow Fwooper, then no quills," she explained. "And then there's the supply and demand issue because of how popular they are, which makes finding them in store like this even better." For a moment, she contemplated grabbing another pack but knew if she did then she would be downsizing by a whole scoop of ice cream later. "Anyways, I'm getting them," Juniper said before heading towards the cashier to purchase them. Finally she had Fwooper feather quills! MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Rhys raised an eyebrow. He could count on one hand the number of times Juniper had admitted she didn’t know something. It made him feel just a little smug, though mainly when he knew the answer. But it was more the fact that she’d admit it so easily. For now, he just nodded. He still felt uneasy about their future task to test the antidote. And since they all had to brew their own potions, they would all have to test them. It was an anxiety-inducing situation for anyone who liked to keep to themselves. However, he did wonder what he could ask Juniper. But he wondered if he wanted to know.
Juniper seemed perplexed that Rhys wasn’t as excited as she was. But he had difficulty mustering up that energy for something he didn’t feel. It was just a quill, after all. ”Oh…I didn’t know that.” Magical creatures were far down on Rhys’ list of favorite interests. After her declaration, Rhys nodded, giving a sheepish smile. ”I’ll wait outside.” There wasn’t a need for him at the front. He opened the door, the bell rang, and he blinked a few times to adjust to the light outside and crossed his arms for lack of knowing what to do with them. The crowd was slowly growing larger, though he didn’t pay much attention as he leaned against a wall.
Mentally, he sorted through his list of remaining supplies, mainly Potions ingredients and supplies. As he focused, his face grew serious, but that was normal when he spaced out. But he hardly noticed the door to the shop open since the sound of the bell mixed with the sounds of the crowd.

▲ If Rhys hadn't taken the initiative in going outside, Juniper had been prepared to drag him through the rest of the shop looking at other knick-knacks. While she got a decent amount of freedom from her parents, getting a day like this where she could keep all of Rhys's attention to herself was sort of unheard of, at least when comparing it to school. Nevertheless, she now had a self-imposed time limit to check out so they could continue on to the next store. "...fifteen sickles, please," the shopkeeper requested for the Fwooper feather quills, causing Juniper to scramble everything in her purse to find the coins. She'd been so excited about finding them that she forgot she actually needed to exchange money for them. "Here you go," she answered after finding all of them, the last two being stuck together by what looked to be a long melted and re-hardened tongue-tying toffee. It was gross. "...sorry," she added sheepishly, quickly taking her net purchase once everything was finalized before speedily heading outside. "Slug and Jiggers next?" Juniper asked Rhys abruptly without announcing that she was right next to him. "Where'd all these people come from?" The crowd in the street had certainly surged from only a few minutes prior. Getting through all their shopping now before it got worse would definitely be the smartest thing to do, though that had sort of been her plan to begin with. Making sure her quills were safely secure in her bag, she slipped her fingers through Rhys's again, conscious that she would easily get pushed around the second they stepped fully out into the street. Maybe if she'd played Quidditch she would have a little more physical fight in her. People didn't really take her seriously if she tried to talk down to them in the middle of Diagon Alley. It just didn't work. "And then ice cream after?"MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Despite his tendency to stay quiet, Rhys still had difficulty pretending to be interested in something he was not. It was a trait forced into children by their parents at a young age, and Rhys had none of that training. It was amusing, however, when Nell grew frustrated at Rhys’ blank stare when she explained some wand wood property in a verbal form of a run-on sentence. Rhys was an intelligent guy, but after a while, it went over his head. And unfortunately, anything in this stationery store fell into that category, so rather than accidentally rain on Juniper’s parade, he opted to wait outside.
She didn’t seem to mind. Rhys wasn’t sure how long he’d stared off into space before she reappeared, which she did very suddenly. His lack of awareness of his surroundings would probably be his death one day. ”Right—yes.” Rhys cleared his throat and pushed off the wall. Everybody was walking in every direction, so when Juniper slipped her hand into his, he instinctively brought her close. It was far too easy to get lost in such a crowd—a problem for adults and children alike. Thankfully Rhys had his height on his side, plus he could navigate a crowd quickly because he didn’t like them.
”It's been like this all week. People usually appear after lunch.” Then it would die late afternoon as people wore themselves down with all the commotion. His eyes scanned for an opening. ”Erm—we can probably cut around this way. It doesn’t seem as busy.” The shops to their right were less popular than some of the other ones. Rhys looked at Juniper reassuringly for a moment. He was glad she had come by today. Typically his rush to get the summer over with was so he could return to school. Even with the bullies and constant trips to the Hospital Wing, it was better than where he was. Plus, several friends he’d been close to had left him behind, so the anxiety always worsened.
They walked around, only dodging a few people and small children that ran in their path—but it could have been worse overall. Rhys had seen someone get pummeled by a kid on a brand new broomstick the day before, causing him to drop a box that revealed a large cake charmed to fit inside. It was quite a mess. But Rhys kept Juniper close by. She was much smaller than him, so easily lost in a crowd as a child might be—not that he’d ever word it like that if she asked.

▲ Juniper had forgotten that Rhys had spent the last few days basically living in Diagon Alley, which seemed like a dream come true at times. But also maybe a bit lonely. With everyone here this week solely focused on getting school supplies, what else was there to do? One could only walk through a shop so many times before it got boring. Even she knew that. She supposed he was probably spending time with Ollivander when she wasn't busy buffing wands, or whatever it was she did. Juniper had been subjected to listening by proxy on how wands were made, and she was positive there was a point where the wood had to be sanded and treated to achieve the smoothness they all had. There was no denying that the Ollivander family knew what they were doing. Her own wand had been purchased there prior to her first year at Hogwarts, though she was starting to see its limited range in what she wanted to use it for. It sort of sucked for high-level transfiguration and charm casting. Maybe she could extend an olive branch to Nell and ask what she thought about it. Doing so would probably make Rhys happy too... She stayed hooked to his side as he led her through a shortcut in the crowd and towards a less busy side of the street. On a normal day she never would have thought much of it, but the flooded alleyway was definitely harder to walk through now. Rhys explained that it most likely had to do with being after lunch, which was a good observation. He knew Diagon better than she did at this point. Which made her think of a very important problem that was about to come up after graduation, "How hard do you think it would be to rent an apartment here?" Hogwarts prepared them for a lot, but not when it came to learning how to find a place to live or do basic things in life. She had been planning on living at home for a little bit after graduating but also didn't want to be a repeat of her sister. Merlin...that one had problems. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

right here with me where it truly lies Rhys still wasn’t sure how to feel about his new situation. A room all to himself without at least one roommate. And, more importantly, space to himself. It was too quiet at times, so Rhys still couldn’t sleep all that well without some noise in the background, but he just spent that extra time reading. Plus, when he did sleep, he was so tired that he slept through those remaining hours of the night. When his nerves were up like this, it usually triggered more nightmares, but he’d been lucky so far. The little things he never spoke about. So few people knew about them. Actually, while Sarah knew what he saw in his nightmares in terms of content, she didn’t even know about them.
Not even Nell knew, and that was one of the people closest to Rhys. Even with the newer relationship in his life, he still considered Nell one of his best friends. Now that didn’t transfer to her getting along with Juniper, but maybe the Cauldron incident was still lingering or the fact that Rhys had stopped working with her in Potions. He couldn’t pinpoint what it was. They made their way through the crowd, Juniper stuck close, and he slowed down as soon as they were through the thick of it. Rhys shrugged. He hadn’t thought about apartments here. The room at the Leaky Cauldron had been such a step up that anything more than that was not yet in his line of sight. ”I dunno.” Rhys muttered, eyes scanning buildings he usually didn’t look at.
”Do you think a lot of people try to live here?” Probably people that worked in Diagon Alley, Rhys figured. Or at the Prophet, even Cursebreakers since Gringotts was right there. He supposed it was convenient for Ministry employees as well. But Rhys didn’t know how it all worked. Hogwarts didn’t have classes in those things. It was an unsettling feeling for Rhys, but he still had a year left for school and time to figure it out somehow. The thing was, Rhys didn’t know who to ask about it either. They approached the Apothecary, and Rhys opened the door to let Juniper walk in first. There was a small crowd, but not so large that it was uncomfortable or claustrophobic. But every year needed their potion supplies. ”I think they rearranged again…” Where Rhys remembered the vials being was now containers of various mushrooms and a large container of wiggentree twigs.
