▲ May 16th, 2018 Today, they were finally going to be testing the veritaserum they'd started brewing a month prior in Potions. Juniper had been practically bouncing all day, excited to see how effective the potion was and what funny things she could get Rhys to admit to once she had him dosed up. Obviously the reverse could happen too, so a bit of nervousness alternated with the absolute giddy mood she'd been in. Even better was seeing if the antidote they'd made would work, because that had been as equally difficult in concocting. She had figured the most powerful truth serum known to magic kind would have a counteragent that was just as hard to make, but she never expected the timing to be so precise with all of the ingredients. When they had last left it, the color matched what it was supposed to look like so it seemed okay. They wouldn't know until one of them was still blabbing truths left and right after drinking it. Skipping every other step down into the dungeons as she went from finishing her lunch to class, Juniper realized that this was basically the last real potion she'd be testing as a student. There were a few smaller things they still needed to cover before the NEWT exams in a few weeks, but this was essentially it. Veritaserum got to be the final hurrah. After that came a lot of grinding towards the exam period, and then immediately trying to find a job following graduation. A few years ago she thought she had it all figured out but there weren't exactly jobs that focused on Transfiguration outside of teaching. And she had so much to learn still with that. It was amazing how it could take decades to master it fully. Getting situated in class, Juniper laid everything out that they would need and waited for Rhys to show up. Nell Ollivander was early as well, looking as nervous as always. An entire year after the incident and the girl still couldn't look her in the eyes. Juniper was positive that Nell was going to try and apologize again during graduation, as she'd been awfully quiet about it lately. Now that Sarah was expelled, it took away some of the nervous energy that Nell seemed to constantly be exuding. "Can't say I'm envious of you being stuck with Dolohov and Rosier..." she said in an attempt to spark some sort of conversation before Rhys arrived. Basically everyone was there, but a few stragglers were still making their way in. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell In life, there always existed balance. While Juniper was jumping out of her shoes with excitement at that day’s Potions lesson—Rhys was quite the opposite. Even at lunch, he’d eaten about half of what he usually did. Nell had given him a curious look, but Rhys had refused to make eye contact. But anyone who had known him for as long as she had known that wasn’t normal. But they’d worked hard on the veritaserum and equally on the antidote. They both would try each concoction and see if it worked. And at this point, he hoped it wouldn’t work.
It felt stupid to feel this nervous. Rhys took the steps down the dungeons with his classmates. The realization that his final days approached also weighed on him. One of the portraits eyed him suspiciously. The Knight had insisted that Rhys was an intruder when suddenly he was at eye level and not a foot above his head. It wasn’t that he was hiding things, especially from his girlfriend, but he was just a private person. Talking about things brought it back to the forefront of his mind. Rhys entered the classroom with a handful of other students. In a few minutes, the stragglers would be marked late.
He took his usual seat, giving Juniper a slight grin. And he glanced at Nell, who, unfortunately, was paired with the girls who somehow had been around every corner Rhys had turned over the last nine months. Rhys couldn’t imagine what was worse—possibly answering a personal question with a stranger or someone you knew. “I can’t believe they let us actually do this.” Let a handful of seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds essentially play with a tightly controlled substance without the harsh fines. He thought about what she might ask, and he thought about how he was on plan b for his future career. Or maybe Juniper would ask him something silly or if he had ever drank the firewhiskey that was always smuggled in.

▲ Nell didn't verbally respond to her, as the hawkish eyes of Rosier and Dolohov were scanning over the both of them immediately upon entering the classroom. Juniper didn't like them - and never really had - but since their little encounter in Diagon Alley before school started it seemed like feeling was mutual now. She wasn't stupid. She knew exactly what they were trying to get at inside the apothecary. And they definitely figured out that she was the one that created the puddle on the floor that Dolohov slipped on. Screaming at the poor employee was the only way they could make it look like they weren't targeting her or oblivious to their surroundings. It had been hilarious to her at the time, but she disliked their attitude towards her ever since. While she cared very little about what went on in the life of Nell Ollivander, she was positive that the Slytherin girl's roommates were taking out their frustration on her during Potions. Whatever onslaught of questions were about to happen would be brutal. How could anyone not feel for the girl about that? Rhys showed up soon after she tried getting Nell's attention, immediately taking her own off of the politics of the seventh year Slytherin girls. They were a needlessly aggressive bunch, minus the one. "Excited to answer all my questions?" she asked, pulling a notebook out of her bag and slapping it down between them, keeping one hand over it to make it seem like it was more important than it actually was. She didn't actually have any questions written down in it, but she was hoping it would make him nervous enough that there would be a clear difference before and after taking the truth serum. "I spent all week coming up with these, and you have to answer them," she teased, grinning back at him. Sliding the notebook closer to her as the professor placed their vials of veritaserum and it's antidote that they'd made a month prior, she stared at the liquid intently. Everything looked like it should, not even a hint of cloudiness in it. All they had to do was spike their drinks and start asking away. "Spin a wand to see who goes first?" she asked, pulling hers out and placing it on the desk before giving it a hard twirl. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell The rest of the class trickled in, and Rhys took his usual spot. His elevated heart rate distracted him, but then his attention fell on the notebook she’d loudly slapped onto the counter. Rhys’ thoughts had distracted him even at that moment that it startled him, and his eyes grew wide. Merlin, how many questions did she have? His eyes locked onto the notebook, and didn’t move for a moment. Visibly his jaw clenched a few times. ”Right…” He muttered hoarsely before clearing his throat. While he wasn’t surprised she prepared for this class, it was unsettling that she had prepared for it.
If Juniper wanted to know something, she could ask. And maybe he was not surrounded by their peers. But Rhys kept his opinions to himself, his eyes still locking onto the notebook for a few seconds at a time. On his end, he still didn’t know what he wanted to ask Juniper. What do you ask the most candid person you knew? Usually, it was Rhys trying to get a word in when she explained something, and now he was supposed to ask her something. A few questions popped into his head, a few of them private, but the rest felt superficial.
Around them Rhys noted Nell with the pair who seemed determined to become his shadow. For that, he did feel a little guilty. It was one thing to work with Sarah but not these two. It had taken Rhys a little time, but it had clicked after one very unsubtle encounter. Why hadn’t he noticed it sooner? Well, he wasn’t accustomed to attention like that. He hadn’t told Juniper because Rhys knew her well enough that it would create consequences. The potions and the antidotes were passed out, the vials sitting harmlessly on their table. Rhys’s mouth felt dry, landing on the vials and the spinning wand. ”Sure.” The wand spun, and Rhys wished that Nell was partnered with him on this. Over the course of their friendship, there were things he had shared with her about him and his life, things he hadn’t told Juniper yet. And Nell knew better than to ask. It began to slow before it stopped. The tip of her ebony wand pointed straight at him and he almost wondered if it had been charmed. And he was dreading whatever came next.

▲ Seeing how uneasy Rhys instantly became from her notebook bluff was amazing. Juniper had to hide the smirk that tried to climb onto her face, forcing it back down by turning away to face the professor while they got their remaining instructions for the class period. She had a few questions she wanted to ask him, though none of them were too invasive. They had a relatively open-door policy when it came to things, but she knew there was still stuff he hadn't told her yet. Using veritaserum to weasel it out seemed disingenuous to her though. She didn't need to use a cheat to get that sort of thing. Instead, she was going to ask a bunch of normal questions to gain a baseline to make sure their potion actually works, and then slam a few more personal things to give her ego a boost. Her wand spun rapidly, eventually coming to a full resting stop while pointed at Rhys. "The wand chooses the wizard," she stated, pulling out their vial of veritaserum and handing it to Rhys to place into his drink. The antidote was on hand, but the questions came first. Flipping open her notebook so that he couldn't see what was inside, she inspected her blank sheet of 'questions' that she was going to ask. Scanning the nonexistent text with the tip of her quill, she made a show of tapping a few times on 'one' and then shaking her head at it. "So many choices..." Juniper let out a sigh. From behind her, at the table that consisted of Ollivander, Dolohov, and Rosier, she could tell that Nell had been the victim chosen to go first. They were rapid-firing questions at her, probably trying to confuse her. Thankfully Rhys wasn't going to get that treatment from her. "Let's start with something easy. What's your favorite food?"MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell Rhys’ anxiety was typically far more subtle than this. Or at least he had grown accustomed to its consistent existence. What he felt now was in addition. And why? Juniper never had an issue holding back or bluntly asking him a question. This was simply a test of their potions. The questions did not need to be complicated, yet Rhys clenched and released his jaw several more times before forcing his leg to stop tapping and taking the potion. For a split second, he didn’t move, eyes locked onto the vial, but then he willed his arm to reach for it.
It was small. Rhys could hold it between his index finger and thumb. Veratiserim was potent and did not require a lot to work. The books and their professor said just a few drops. So, Rhys followed suit and placed a few drops in a glass of water. The potion disappeared instantly as if it had never existed. Raising it, he stared at it one more time before drinking it. Did he feel different? No? Rhys couldn’t tell, but he looked back at Juniper, who made quick work of scanning the page in her notebook for her first question.
’What’s your favorite food?’ Rhys blinked a few times and didn’t hesitate to open his mouth and speak. It was a straightforward question, and his brain gave him a clear answer, like an incomprehensible level of clarity that Rhys had never felt before. ”Cinnamon cookies.” Okay, that wasn’t so bad. Favorite food was hardly a deep dark secret to expose. But Juniper still had the duration of the potion, or at least until someone provided him with the antidote. All around, he glimpsed other groups testing their potions. One pair was already escorted out of the classroom for an adverse effect. Near them, Nell answered those girls’ questions, and Rhys looked back to Juniper.

▲ She could tell he was nervous. The way his foot was tapping the ground and how he eyed her notebook. In the long run, she knew that would help with whatever focus the potion gave to him. Instead of having him wander about and waste time. This had the potential for crazy results, but she wasn't sure how much she wanted to push it just yet. While trying to think of a second question, a few of their classmates were removed and her eyes followed them. It was no surprise considering who it was - they were always whispering in the back of the room during lessons and practically tossing their ingredients into their cauldrons. Somehow even the cranky Slytherin girls next to them more competent potioneers. There had been a constant amazement about who had managed to get into the NEWT class over the past two years, and now they were practically done. Failing at the end sounded about right for that pair. Rhys answered quickly and truthfully (as far as she was aware) with cinnamon cookies. From her own observations of his eating habits over the past seventeen months, that definitely aligned. He'd devoured the tin of cookies they'd been given the first Christmas they'd spent together at school, and she could've sworn there were even more during this last one that she never even managed to see because of how fast he'd eaten them. But there was little time for pause and reflection on cinnamon cookies right now. She had to ask more questions. "Are you excited for graduation?" she asked, giving enough time for a response before firing into the follow-up, "What are your plans for work after you graduate?" More standard questions to give a baseline. But it would be good to scribble down the answers regardless. Plus, she sort of wanted to know how nervous he was for the whole thing. Because she always absolutely terrified of what came next. It was a great unknown, and being tossed out into the world without any idea of what she wanted to do was scary. She did have Rhys though. That eased a lot of it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell Rhys and Juniper had discussed and marveled at how many of their classmates were terrible at Potions. How did they survive Potions as younger students and make it to the NEWT-level courses? They approached it from different perspectives, however. Rhys thought it was ridiculous, considering that not following directions on a Potion could have damaging effects. Much like the mark on Juniper’s leg, though that had been an accident. He supposed they both viewed that incident differently as well, and Rhys hadn’t been in class that day which apparently was part of the initial problem. But also part of a journey that led him to this moment. Where his girlfriend had given him a truth potion, and he didn’t know how anyone could fight this compulsion to speak.
The sounds in the room distracted him. So many people were talking at once in a space that wasn’t that large, but he would look back whenever he heard her voice. And whenever the question would register in his mind, there was this strange feeling of a fog lifting. ’Are you excited for graduation?’ Rhys’ head shook slightly before his mouth even opened. ”No.” He felt like he wasn’t even thinking. ”I’m afraid.” Rhys wasn’t scared. He was nervous about what came next and about stepping into a world where he could so easily fail. How do you navigate a world that has already made up its mind about you? Not to mention his friends were here. Would he even see them after? What if Juniper decided her life would go in a completely different direction than his own?
But Rhys didn’t have much time to ruminate over the words that had just left his mouth when she asked the next question. ’What are your plans for work after you graduate?’ Well, if that wasn’t the question on the forefront of everyone’s mind these past weeks. Owls had flooded the Great Hall every morning approaching all the seventh years as they waited to hear back about conditional work offers. Even Rhys had managed to land one, though not his top choice, which had left him with a sinking feeling in his stomach at the time. And he’d spent the following two days brooding and slightly withdrawn. ”I'll be a Cursebreaker.” He immediately answered. ”I heard back from Gringotts.”

▲ It was scary how quick Rhys responded to her first question, and how straightforward his answer was. While she had expected him to say that that he was ready, this took her a moment to process. She realized she was afraid too. Because what came after was an unknown. She'd seen her siblings graduate and then enter the work force but hadn't been old enough yet to truly understand what that would be like by the time it happened for her. There were guaranteed jobs at the Ministry, as there always were, but what if she hated that? Then what? So Rhys's very honest answer of being afraid and not excited for graduation made so much sense to her, because she was feeling the same way even if she hadn't thought about it too much. At the end of the day, she still had a home to fall back to and a support system to back her up if she needed it. Rhys didn't have those same options as her, and she knew that probably made it that much scarier. So she really didn't think her second question would generate much more than the previous one. Except it was all news to her. "Cursebreaker? They got back to you? When?" she asked excitedly, forgetting he was under the effects of the truth serum. This was the first she had heard of it, though had known he'd sent in an application a while back. Merlin, that was a insane career to get into, which was one of the reasons she didn't even give it a second thought. Only crazy people and Rhys chose it. "Why didn't you tell me? We could've celebrated...or something." There wasn't much room for that sort of thing at Hogwarts, and they didn't have any more Hogsmeade trips left this year. But she could've figured something out. Even going as far as asking the house elves for help. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell Just because Rhys was under the effects of a truth serum didn’t mean he wasn’t lucid and aware of what he was saying. So far, just three questions. And Rhys would’ve been more than happy to talk about food, but the rest he’d stowed away neatly in that corner of his mind with everything else collecting dust there. This compulsion that the potion creation had forced those things out into the open. Rhys felt very aware, or at least more than usual. This inability to suppress certain things in one’s mind was uncomfortable. And she kept asking questions continuing with asking him about work. Merlin, one of those topics he’d shoved away to deal with later.
His jaw clenched and unclenched several times, and he fidgeted in his chair. This wasn’t something he could fight as much as he wanted to. ”Last Friday. You weren’t at breakfast.” Every time he opened his mouth and spoke, he closed it quickly as if he’d said something wrong. This time he did feel it. It was Wednesday now, which meant Rhys had kept this to himself for the better half a week. And then the why. Would a permanent sticky charm work to keep his mouth closed? He’d been dreading this particular question, though, in his mind, it had all taken place entirely in another context and setting.
If she had asked Rhys this question before the potion, Juniper very well could have been met with silence. ”It wasn’t my first choice, so I wasn’t happy about it.” The backup plan that wasn’t supposed to happen. And it wasn’t a fear of the job. He wasn’t scared of the danger, but what could he prove on some random spot on the earth essentially digging for ancient gold? ”I didn’t want to talk about it.” Rhys almost felt as though he’d answered that one on purpose. It was true. He hadn’t and didn’t want to talk about it. Eventually, he would be alright with this, but he needed time. Rhys crossed his arms as his fingers had been loudly tapping in sequence on the table for lack of knowing what to do with them.

▲ Right. Friday. She'd slept in because of a particularly nasty head cold that set in the night before and knocked her off her feet until she got to the Hospital Wing for a pepper-up potion the following morning. After that she was right as rain, but clearly missed a relatively important letter that she otherwise would have seen arrive if they'd been eating together. Juniper could tell that he didn't want to answer the question, with the way he looked at her as he answered truthfully. The follow-up question about why got her the rest of what she wanted to know, and she immediately wondered if she actually needed to or not. It felt like a forced confession, an unintentional one of course, and she disliked that he was forced to respond when she hadn't meant to ask the question in the first place. Was it disappointment that he hadn't heard back by his number one? Possible. Juniper couldn't tell and didn't want to pry into that further. She furrowed her eyebrows as she thought about what to say next, knowing that he was still under the spell of the veritaserum. "You can talk about those things with me you know... she reached out for the hand that had been tapping on their table the entire time. For a moment, she completely forgot that they were in Potions class, truth telling aside. Only when she heard the group behind them start a ruckus - Nell's group - did she remember that it wasn't just them. "Do you want the antidote now?" Another loud commotion from behind her caused her to roll her eyes and turn around. Someone in the other group had spilled either the potion or the antidote, and there was a screech coming from Rosier. It wasn't like veritaserum was going to burn them like she'd been the year prior... MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell His jaw clenched again. At this rate, he knew it would feel sore later. But this entire time, his anxiety was creeping up slowly. He kept his gaze low, mostly staring at the table leg in front of him and memorizing all the marks and scratches that had accumulated over time. Rhys wasn’t bothered that she’d asked the question, although he would have preferred that conversation to occur at another time. In his head, he simply told himself that the other jobs he’d applied for were highly competitive, so even the best and brightest of his class would not get in. Many had famous names or siblings with their foot in the door. Or maybe rich parents on their side. Rhys knew he’d believe it eventually.
As he’d barely moved to cross his arms, he felt a hand on his own. Looking up, he finally looked at her. Juniper, supportive as always, letting him know what he already knew but needed to hear sometimes. Rhys acknowledged, lightly squeezing her hand. Naturally, he didn’t trust himself to speak and give a simple answer. But then the word he had been waiting for. Thank Merlin, it would be over soon. ”Yes.” That was the fastest answer he had given yet but then a loud noise. Juniper turned around, letting go of his hand, and Rhys was distracted, looking ahead. Somehow Nell’s table was upside down, and small vials on the floor where at least one was open. The rest seemed intact.
Nell and Dolohov had scooted back until they were just a few paces steps in front of his own table. Dolohov seemed to recognize that and turned around. The surprised expression on her face quickly shifted to a mischievous one as her eyes narrowed in on him. Rhys didn’t like that look at all. ’Hey Rhys.’ She walked toward their table, sitting right on the edge of his half and far too close for comfort. ’Now that she’s busy—‘ She glanced over her shoulder at Rosier, who was speaking to the Professor. ’And this one’s no fun.’ She obviously looked at Nell—ignoring Juniper altogether. ’Why don’t you help me test my potion. You can ask me whatever…you…want.’ The short pauses between her last few words were only the latest in the unsubtle attempts these girls had begun taking with him. And in front of his girlfriend, no less.
It must have been the veritaserum because Rhys kept stoic when he opened his mouth. But he knew his answer would have been the same more or less without it. ”I’d rather kiss a Dementor.” Rhys kept his tone even as he crossed his arms. Did they really not get the hint as he actively avoided them. At least he could blame the potion for this. Dolohov gasped in surprise, outraged, and she stood from where she’d been sitting and marched back over to Rosier. The other answer that had floated from his brain involved a blast-ended skrewt, but he didn’t say that one. The dementor must have been the greater truth. Now that was settled, he remembered—the antidote. Scanning the table, he saw the vial in Juniper’s hand, and she said something right as he looked at her that his brain took an extra second to process.

▲ The clatter was a lot worse than she'd expected, being more of a crash than anything else. One singular broken vial lay on the ground, as well as the table, which was a feat on its own. Her first thought was how such a thing was possible, especially with veritaserum and it's antidote. Neither were explosive nor had properties that could lead to a table being flipped but it was on the ground nonetheless. Juniper instinctively stood up to make sure there wasn't anything potentially dangerous flowing towards her feet, not one to want a blue or red foot on top of her already green leg. It seemed like she was relatively safe, but tapped Nell on the shoulder just to make sure. Rosier had already scampered off to their professor, which could only mean she was concocting a story to keep herself out of trouble. Or, more unlikely, was asking for help. "What happened?" she whispered to Ollivander, completely missing the fact that Dolohov had snuck by her and was now interrogating Rhys. If she had seen the snake, she would have cut its head off right then and there. Nell didn't seem to actually know, responding with a shrug and an equally lowered voice about how Dolohov had asked Rosier something extremely personal and then the table was where it was now. A magical outburst maybe? It wasn't until she heard Rhys next to her say that he'd 'rather kiss a dementor' that grabbed her attention back, finally noticing Dolohov attempting to flash her assets at him. A loud snort came out of Juniper's nose, almost a scoff, as she picked up the antidote vial and waved it in front of the other girl's face. It was very clearly still full, meaning it would be obvious to her that Rhys was telling the truth. Off she went though, clearly pissed off by the combined effort between them. "We both know you only love m-" Juniper started to say 'me', but was cut off by Nell who had turned around and was staring at both of them, now saying something about being her backup if her partners tried to pin it all on her. As she thought about it, Juniper handed over the antidote vial to Rhys, forgetting momentarily that she'd been asking him a question. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell Rhys had been distracted and annoyed, but Dolohov sitting so close to him. Her skirt purposefully rode up high up her thigh though his eyes remained on that smug impression on her face. At least that expression changed quickly, as did the situation in their part of the classroom. Nell and Juniper both turned around as he answered. Nell looked away, probably suppressing a smile, and Juniper simply waved the antidote almost proudly. Rhys wondered if he would have felt any semblance of guilt if not for the potion, but he realized he wouldn't have.
But he remembered what they'd been talking about before, so while he was a little proud at his honest answer, his thoughts returned to his other honest answers, and he scanned until his eyes locked to that vial in Juniper's hand. She said something, but then Nell grabbed both their attention, and he looked at his best friend. While she hadn't asked a question, Rhys gave a light nod. Of course, he'd help her, plus after years of working on Potions together, he had sort of just changed it on her. But then Juniper handed him the vial.
Thank Merlin and whoever else he was allowed to thank in these situations. Rhys started at it for a full two seconds before removing the stopper and drinking it directly. Oh, that did not go down easily, and he cringed slightly. Maybe he should have put it in some water like he had the veritaserum. But he just wanted control back of his thoughts. As he placed the vial back on the table, he waited for some indication that the potion had worked. Or some sign of anything, really. " How do I know if it worked?" Rhys asked. Their textbooks weren't clear on what it felt like to be under the potion's effects or the antidote. Simply stating how to make it.

▲ The issue with Nell's group seemed to be resolving itself on its own, and she reluctantly turned back to face Dolohov and Rosier as they returned to the desk. The professor managed to get everything back in order with a couple wand waves, and like clockwork the rest of the class was back to conducting their experiment. It was nice not being the center of attention in Potions for once. Somehow Nell always managed it though. There was no obvious change in Rhys after he took the antidote, similar to how he was following the veritaserum. But that meant nothing with these tricky, almost invisible potions involved. They were beyond dangerous, which she understood now. Having the ability to slip this thing undetected into anyone's drink and then go to town with questions was a horrifying revelation. Did professionals in the Ministry carry antidote with them everywhere or only prepare food for themselves? Clearly it was a controlled substance to a certain degree, but it seemed almost foolish to be showing teenagers how to make it. Especially students like Rosier and Dolohov. Somehow it was still better than a love potion. The untold destruction the two of them could sow with such power... Rhys asked how he would know if the antidote was working, and Juniper nodded her head. "I can ask one of the same questions again and you could lie instead? I think that would be the easiest way to tell if it's working yet." Seemed simple enough to her. Going back through her now not-empty notebook page, which had the few questions she'd managed to ask, Juniper decided to go with the first question she'd asked again. "What's your favorite food?" A line was drawn down the center of her page to indicate which questions were under the effect of veritaserum and those that weren't. It would be easier for them to write their reports that way - maybe even create a fancy graph to have a visual aid. Those always went over well with professors. Before Rhys finished answering, Juniper had already taken the veritaserum vial and started to drop a bit into her glass, "My turn now," she said cheerfully. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
