who walks among
the famous living dead
Fall 2022
Merlin, it made sense that Juniper had done this excursion alone. While Ewan hadn’t encountered the same logistical problems, the timing was the real pain. It was an excellent time to finally use his accumulated personal time. Unfortunately, employment in Human Resources did require that he constantly speak, as it were. And the time off gave him a chance to catch up on reading and more time for his observing. A small notepad had constantly accompanied him; both of his sisters had given him funny looks for it, but then for the last week, he’d stayed home.
And Ewan began not long after his initial discussion with Juniper. He would never admit that her brilliance in Transfiguration exceeded his own, but his younger sister had never been short of confidence. Well, normally being the keyword there. His questions and preparations probably annoyed her, but Ewan knew it was a good distraction from recent events in her life. Ewan visited her flat more often in the past few weeks than in her old one—or Rhys’ flat. Speaking of their favorite Werewolf, Ewan had conveniently walked by a pub or two keeping an eye out for him.
But his information told him that after a couple of weeks, the boy had been sent on assignment halfway across the world. ’No doubt entertaining himself in some bar in Mexico.’ Ewan and thought privately. He didn’t make it a habit to pry into his sister’s lives, but when it came to the oldest, she didn’t leave him much of a choice. The interesting characters she brought around were either dumb, shady, or clearly trying to take advantage of her. It never worked out, and Ewan merely didn’t want some swindler charming her while slipping his mother’s good silver into his coat pocket.
So, he visited his sister for help on his Animagus journey. But it was an excellent way to check in on her. Ewan may have been a proud man but not so proud to play the part of the concerned older brother. He had his heartbreaks in the past, and that was not a pain he’d wish on anyone. Although he couldn’t say any of his past paramours had ingrained themselves in his life as Rhys had with Juniper. Unfortunately, the last parts of the journey were easily done in solitude. And just as he’d planned, success had followed.
Unsurprisingly, Ewan looked down and saw the tiny paws of a cat. Relief swept over him for a worry he hadn’t realized until now. Imagine a McGonagall and Animagus that was not a cat. With the notoriety of his family, that felt simply blasphemous. But unlike his Great-Aunt with the lighter fur of a tabby cat and Juniper with her all-black fur Ewan fit somewhere in the middle. Black fur with random splotches of white and orange fur—or rather, orange fur with black and white splotches? Ewan transformed back, looking back down at his hands which were large and human again. Pleased with himself, he apparated to Diagon Alley, turning a corner into an alley to transform into his new form.
Quickly and nimbly, he traversed several boxes onto a trash bin in front of a window with the blinds drawn. Bright eyes looked back at him, and more than half his face was covered in black fur while the rest the lighter colors. It was strange to look and not see himself, but he could wait to complete his registration until the morning. In the meantime, he jumped down and made his way to Horizont Alley. Nobody looked at him, some might glance, but all they saw was a cat. A tortoiseshell cat. Being invisible would be something useful for him.
Turning a corner, he walked into the middle of an alleyway and transformed into his human self. While he was in a magical part of London, he was still technically unregistered, and there was no need to put the spotlight on himself when his goal in life was to be a wallflower. This was exciting. He’d actually done it. And just as he had as a young boy, Ewan sought out his sister to tell her. Although the younger instead of, the older. Could Ewan have done this on his own? It would have been silly not to ask someone who had already done this. Ewan exited the alley and made his way to Horizont. It wasn’t too late for a visit.
