November 20, 2027 Rose understood perfectly why Lily had chosen to work at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. It was essentially the family business, having been started by their late uncle Fred and uncle George years before they were born, only for Rose's own father, Ron, to go into business with George later on. It was a fun shop, too, as the shops of Diagon Alley went; it was bright and cheerful and full of exciting joke products and all manner of other items that her father and uncle had decided to sell.
The only problem with it was that there were constant surprises around every corner. As much as Rose told herself that her own family wouldn't stock any inventory that might actually harm her, the constant bangs and flashes that inevitably happened when younger shoppers—or older ones who really should have known better—were given their freedom in the joke shop had become too much for her to handle in the two years since her mother had died in an explosion.
Those two years had given her enough time to figure out some compromises, though. When she did have to go there to meet with relatives, just as she had agreed to meet Lily on her lunch break, she stayed out back or in the areas reserved for employees instead of out on the shop floor, where it was less likely that she would be triggered by something that was too much of a reminder of how her mother and so many others were killed.
As the daughter of one of the owners, Rose was able to let herself in through the back door without a second thought. She wasn't exactly there to rob the place, and that was perfectly clear; she was just there to grab lunch with her cousin. "Lily? Are you back here?" she called out, not sure if Lily was still working the till.

▲ The ramp up to Christmastime was bound to happen any day now. As the best employee of the joke shop (self-proclaimed but how would she ever be wrong about that?), it was her job to unpack all of the new items that were delivered. Packed shelves of product led to more sales, and her nonstop brain liked the task of manually placing everything where it belonged. Especially the more delicate items. Anything that had the potential to blow up at the introduction of a little levitation charm was an instant normal handling. Lily still didn't trust her magic perfectly, and she found that she used it even less these days than she did at school. Simple things, like summoning charms or fetching her lunch from the employee fridge were one thing. The best use of her levitation charm was dangling crisps about two feet above her head and dropping them from there into her mouth. The shop was sort of boring during the school months, so she had found resourceful ways to keep herself active when her uncles weren't around to observe her. Which honestly was super dangerous. They knew what she could do if left alone too long. At the same time, that kept her in line. Because if she blew up half the shop, there was no one else there to take the blame except her. Mighty smart of them to arrange it this way. The majority of her morning had been spent organizing new stock and then breaking down the cardboard boxes by building towers out of them before crashing into them. Literally no customers had come in yet, so it was basically free reign of the store for her today. One of the major problems with cardboard - which she found out after putting body sized dents into most of the boxes - was that it was more difficult to fold into even pieces like that. So she was currently stepping onto them as if she was aggressively giving someone a back massage using her feet. Even at twenty, gentle didn't exactly fit into her vocabulary, and there was no such thing as daintily evening out the cardboard boxes for removal. Everything had to be smashed back into place. One particular jump led to an impressive crunch from the corrugated packing, tickling her ears in a way she didn't know was possible. If only she had plastic bubbles to pop too! Thinking fondly of the last delivery that had it for packing, Lily heard the door to the back of the store open and then her name called. "I'm out here!" she screeched back, letting her feet break down a few of the crushed sides as she put all of her weight into the current piece. It sounded like Rose, but she couldn't exactly tell with how much noise she was making below her. Whomever it was had a key, unless she forgot to lock the door again. If that was the case, then she'd get reprimanded again if either of her uncles found out. As long as it wasn't Benny trying to cop a napping location again, she'd probably be fine... November 20, 2027 "I'm out here!" Lily called back to her. From the context (and the loudness of her voice), Rose knew that that meant that her cousin wasn't in the back of the joke shop near her. Rose could hear some other noises, too, although she didn't think that those were coming from customers.
Rose wasn't sure exactly what she was getting into as she began to walk in the direction from which the sound of Lily's voice had come, but she knew that it wouldn't be any worse than what she dealt with at work. Although some people might have begged to disagree, Lily was actually more mature than the average four- or five-year-old child.
Well, that was in theory, at least, as it soon became clear to Rose what the source of the other noises she'd heard was. Lily was apparently in the process of breaking down cardboard. Even with magic, it wasn't a quick or easy task, so Rose wasn't as judgmental about it as she could have been. Blasting it wouldn't really work, for obvious reasons, and there were only so many Severing Charms a person could cast without getting sloppy and risking injuring themselves or someone or something else.

▲ "Hey Rosie!" Lily called out cheerfully to her cousin as she came crashing down into another box feet first. Technically it would have been easier to just cut through the tape on the bottom, but where was the fun in that? Other alternatives to jumping through the flipped over box included tomahawk kicking it or using a pressure spell to force it to snap inward. The only issue with the latter was that then she had to pull the flaps back out so the cardboard could be folded, and they didn't like to cooperate sometimes after blasting them to smithereens. The goal was to make the boxes stack in an orderly fashion after all, and the more that were misshapen, the more awkward they would be out in the alleyway. Organization and shape stacking was basic kid stuff. Even she could do that semi-correctly. As much as she wanted to drop her heel into this box, jumping off her stepladder was far easier. It was just tall enough to be waist high, and even with her superior flexibility she couldn't kick her leg that far up. Maybe if she had gone pro in Quidditch... "So what's up?" she added as she straightened herself up in the center of the now broken box. Stepping over the edge - which required some finagling of her legs because of its size - Lily started the process of pulling the folds out so that she could break it down and add it to the pile. "I think this one was a new stock of fireworks. Uncle George thinks people are going to start buying them earlier for the Lunar New Year festival this year." The previous year's had been a resounding success in the business side, and she remembered being surprised that the store could actually run out of one of their trademark items. November 20, 2027 Watching what Lily was doing and knowing that the noise was coming from breaking down boxes made it a bit easier to deal with than if the noise were coming from somewhere else and neither of them knew what it was. Still, the sound of it wasn't pleasant to Rose, and she wished that there were some way that they could accomplish it all in one fell swoop to cut down on the racket.
Lily asked her what was up, but Rose didn't have time to answer before she had changed the subject on her. "I think this one was a new stock of fireworks. Uncle George thinks people are going to start buying them earlier for the Lunar New Year festival this year," Lily then commented in reference to the box that she was in the process of breaking down.
Rose nodded her head. From a business standpoint, it was a good thing that people were eager to get their fireworks from Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes before the selection was picked over. Personally, however, Rose was making a mental note not to attend the Lunar New Year festivities that would be involving fireworks of any kind. It wasn't anything against the people who were going to be celebrating, but she knew that she and explosions didn't exactly mix anymore.
"Are you ready for lunch?" asked Rose. It wouldn't have been the first time that Lily had gotten sidetracked. They both had the disadvantage of only having so much free time in the day when they were working, so they couldn't really afford to waste what was available to them.
As much as Rose wanted to drag her cousin out of the shop so that they could grab food with enough time to eat it without having to choke it down, teaching young children had made her more creative with her problem-solving. She didn't want to get angry with Lily, even though her younger self might have. They weren't guaranteed more time to spend together, as terrible as that sounded; they needed to make it count.
Combining lunch with the work that Lily needed to get done wasn't what she had anticipated when she had gotten away from MYSTIC, but it seemed like a good approach to the problem at hand. Since they couldn't just transfigure some Nosebleed Nougats into something more filling (and hopefully less messy), though, there was the question of what to do about food.
"Shall we stay here and order takeaway?" she suggested. "We can eat, and I can help you with the boxes." They could collaborate on getting the box situation dealt with and eat their lunch without wasting time spent together, considering that the conveniences of the modern magical world were such that it wasn't out of the question to place an order at a restaurant with a mobile phone and have it delivered in minutes.

▲ Lunch? Was it that time of the day already? Lily's head whipped around so that she could squint at the clock that sat behind the front counter, an almost neck-breaking whiplash that would have hurt anyone but her. The hands of the clock were dragon wings, and she could sort of see them pointing to after noon. Not that time meant anything to her when it came to lunch. Eating for Lily was the same as breathing, so Rose could have proposed getting food at three in the morning and she would have shirked her responsibilities and agreed to it. "Always!" she responded happily before jumping straight down into the next box with a satisfying corrugated crunch. Totally would have been better if there was bubble-wrap. She was going to die on that hill. "Good idea. Because I still have like, all of that over there," Lily pointed behind her at a stack of boxes that needed to be broken down. It was half the size it started at this morning, and would have been gone by now if she'd used magic. But what was the fun in that? "I'm not partial to anything, so whatever you want works for me." She wasn't sure if that was a human trait or something granted by the werewolf. Being essentially a garbage disposal for food was great though. With her absolutely uncontrolled restraint, she could put down muggle fast food and Fortescue's ice cream all in the same sitting, and then rinse and repeat. "I could also just lock up for lunch. No one's come by today and I doubt they will until this evening..." she offered. The next box was set up as she talked, the process repeated for probably the thirtieth time that day. This was the calm before the holiday storm right now. As much as she enjoyed talking to customers and seeing the store bustling, having a quiet day to bring the pain onto dozens of boxes was just as entertaining to her. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

November 20, 2027 The speed at which Lily moved just to check the time was uncomfortably fast, and Rose was just glad that she wasn't moving her own neck like that. Rose also wasn't sure how her cousin's neck hadn't snapped in the process; it was like watching an owl move its neck, only not. Realizing that it was actually lunchtime and that she wasn't being fooled, Lily answered that she was "always" ready for lunch.
At first, Lily was in agreement with her idea of ordering something to be delivered to the shop for their lunch because of the boxes that she had yet to break down, but then she mentioned that she could always close temporarily while they went and got something to eat. Regardless, Lily expressed that she didn't have a preference for anything in particular where their lunch was concerned.
With that, it was time to narrow down their options, and Rose started to list a few of them. "Blishwick's pizza?" That would give them an obvious option of getting it delivered or locking up to go to Hogsmeade. "Spellbucks?" That one was more caffeine than Lily probably needed. "The Leaky Cauldron?" That would be close by but not the most exciting menu.

▲ Another satisfying cardboard crunch of the material beneath her feet like it was a great place to stop for the afternoon. Food was more important after all, and with Rose’s invitation, there was no way Lily could turn it down. “The Violet Hound?” It was about equidistant from the joke shop as the Leaky Cauldron was, but the atmosphere was always so much better there. Not to mention the food. And then maybe after she’d get ice cream. Go for the Fortescue double-feature. Uncle George couldn’t be mad at her for supporting the other local businesses. Her appearance everywhere just meant more customers would associate her with the shop and stop by. Or something like that. “They have really good sandwiches there,” Lily commented as she snuck behind the counter to retrieve enough money for food, as well as her jacket. While it wasn’t terribly cold out yet, there had been a few chilly breezes over the last few days. Being caught without an extra layer meant a few minutes of being subjected to brutal, frigid air. “I go to the Leaky Cauldron like, three times a week as it is. They’re sort of sick of looking at me I think…” Also known as dealing with her everything. The loud talking that some called borderline screaming, her need to be up close and personal…apparently what she was comfortable with, not everyone seemed to like. But if Cordie could deal with her, why couldn’t anyone else? Sliding her jacket on and zipping it aggressively all the way up to her neck, Lily produced two thumbs-ups from the slightly oversized sleeves. “Ready to go!” she stated as she headed towards the door and found the key to lock up in her pocket. Luckily the ‘BE BACK SOON’ sign was always stashed right next to the front, and she flipped it around while waiting for Rose to exit. Perfect timing it seemed, as the food talk was making her stomach start to rumble. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

November 20, 2027 Lily suggested the Violet Hound for their lunch, and Rose had no problem with that. Among the different restaurants that were available to them on the magical side of London, she had to say that the Violet Hound was one of the better options. As Lily said a few moments later, the sandwiches there were really good, and most everything else there was, too. The Violet Hound was of a consistently high quality, and for as popular as it was, it wasn't usually so busy that it was a turn-off.
Another point in favor of the Violet Hound was that Lily explained that she went to the Leaky Cauldron a lot. It was a mainstay in Diagon Alley, but there was only so much traditional pub fare a person could have before it got a bit old.
Rose, who hadn't needed convincing to begin with, verbally agreed with her cousin. "The Violet Hound sounds perfect," she told Lily, moving around along with her so that they could keep conversing. "The Flobberworm and Lettuce at LIFE isn't bad, but I don't exactly get the chance to go there during the week." She had students to supervise during lunchtime, which meant bringing a packed lunch to the Hogwarts campus. It occasionally made her jealous of the staff members who taught at LIFE and didn't need to watch children constantly, but she really didn't have anything to complain about.
"Ready to go!" Lily looked to Rose as though her jacket might have been one of the old hand-me-downs her father was always complaining about from his childhood. That was no longer a financial necessity for their family a generation later, but some items had still ended up being passed down between the various cousins out of convenience.
With Lily signaling that she was ready and preparing to lock up the joke shop while they were out grabbing lunch, Rose went ahead and stepped out of the building. The Violet Hound wasn't far—no farther away than the Leaky Cauldron—so they would be relatively close by in case they needed to come back for any reason before they finished eating.

▲ ”Oooooh, I’ve been meaning to try it too,” Lily fawned over the idea of going back to the Hogwarts campus just to eat at the pub there. ”Do you think they’d let me in? Because like, I barely passed again when I had to retake seventh year. Prettty sure they don’t want to see me anywhere close to the school any time soon.” Not that she cared. School wasn’t exactly easy for everyone, and Lily had been proud of her accomplishments by the end of the year. There were a lot of her classmates that wouldn’t have made it out of the school if not for her map and the secret passageway out of the castle… Locking the door to the shop behind Rose, Lily triple checked to make sure the key ended up in her pocket. There was a thirty-three percent chance that she’d lost it along the way, but only if she forgot to make sure it was safely secured. The same could be said about the door being locked, to which Lily tugged at the handles a few times as well. ”Locked!” she said aloud, as if that alone was some sort of accomplishment. In reality, it was. ”So, how is teaching? How many little kids have spewed dragon pox on you? Oh! Wait, or accidentally levitated themselves? I did that once when I was like, three. I don’t remember doing it, but apparently I floated my toy broom like, all the way to the ceiling.” Rose had definitely heard that story before, but Lily still told it. Filling the empty air with her voice was the only way to avoid her never-ending hunger pangs. That and she literally didn’t know how to function without talking or some sort of action. ”I would have been a terror if those classes existed at our age. Could you imagine?” A long cackle erupted from her at the mere thought. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

November 20, 2027 Lily brought up that she had been meaning to try the Flobberworm and Lettuce, too, and she asked if she would be let in even though she wasn't a Hogwarts student anymore. Rose didn't see why she wouldn't be (or why anyone who wasn't a student there wouldn't be let in). Like with any pub, if someone created a reason to ban them from the establishment, then that was one thing. As far as Rose knew, though, there was no rule about keeping "outsiders" out of the pub. Chances were, people either weren't aware of its existence, or they just didn't care to go to the Hogwarts campus for food and drinks they could get elsewhere.
"Because like, I barely passed again when I had to retake seventh year," Lily added. "Prettty sure they don't want to see me anywhere close to the school any time soon.”
Rose couldn't pretend that Lily had been the best student that Hogwarts had ever had, but she knew that she had tried her best… most of the time, at least. Though she hadn't been at Hogwarts herself to see it firsthand, Rose's understanding was that not all of the staff there appreciated having a student repeat a year, especially when some of them thought that Lily would have been better off cutting her losses and leaving school with only Ordinary Wizarding Levels to her name. To her credit, Lily had proven her critics wrong; it might have taken her longer than expected, but she had done it.
While Lily's concerns might have been true of a professor or two, Rose didn't think it would matter that much. She wasn't going to be going there to retake her NEWTs for a second time on top of her first retake; she just wanted some pub food. If she had a criminal record, then that would be different. But not doing well academically wasn't a crime, and neither was showing back up to Hogwarts.
"I'll go with you sometime, if you want," Rose offered her cousin. Going to the Flobberworm and Lettuce as a guest of a Hogwarts staff member would definitely keep her in the clear. If anyone gave them a hard time about Lily's being there, they would have to deal with someone credentialed. In all likelihood, it wouldn't be necessary, but if it made Lily feel better about it? Rose was happy to do what she could. "It's not like it's the Room of Requirement, but…"
"Locked!" The verbal confirmation that the door was locked meant that they could walk away from the shop without any concerns. More accurately, Rose wouldn't have to be thinking about whether or not everything was secure while they ate lunch. It wasn't that she didn't trust Lily; it was just that she could get distracted unintentionally. She gave Lily a thumbs up, though.
"So," Lily started after that, "how is teaching?" She proceeded to ask her how many kids had spewed Dragon Pox on her so far or accidentally levitated themselves. Lily mentioned that she had done that herself when she was about three years old, which Rose didn't doubt. Young magical children often performed underage magic without realizing what they were doing. It was just a part of growing up.
"Touch wood, no Dragon Pox," Rose replied, not that she had anything wooden to touch upon saying it. She really didn't want to catch Dragon Pox from anyone. Even though it could be treated easily enough in most cases instead of being the death sentence it once had been, having to spend time at St. Mungo's wasn't on her to-do list. Frankly, Rose was glad that she hadn't been teaching when Hag's Fever had been going around. That would have been nightmarish. Small children were notorious for spreading around various illnesses amongst themselves and to any other people who happened to spend any length of time in their presence, and it was hard enough as it was to teach her pupils that they shouldn't cough or sneeze on others without the addition of a rapidly spreading magical disease to make it that much more of a necessity.
"I would have been a terror if those classes existed at our age. Could you imagine?" Lily laughed.
Rose, too, laughed. "It wouldn't be too bad," she said. If she couldn't handle the hyperactivity of small children, then she was in the wrong position. "Some days, it would be nice if I could sit them down in front of Witch TV," she admitted, "but our parents didn't have that option, either."

▲ ”Perfect!” Lily said aloud as she turned away from the shop door. She gave her cousin a side hug as she did so. ”You’re the best. Now they won’t try to chase me out again.” As if the powers that be at Hogwarts would actually care if she showed up to eat at their student run pub. And it wasn’t like they would be worried about her coming back for more schooling because, like, that was never going to happen. She laughed the thought away instantly, a loud, ”Ha!” to herself as she pulled away from Rose. ”Speaking of, did that survive the fire? I used to love stumbling on it.” And throwing parties out of it. And telling everyone about where to find it. Hogwarts’ little secret wasn’t much of a secret once the entire school knew about it. The trick, of course, was actually getting it to appear. Most couldn’t do that even if they happened to have an idea of where the door was. Lily had never exactly had any issues with that, having relatively strong convictions about what she needed out of it. ”Oh yeah, obviously don’t want you coming down with it. That would blow.” Like an erumpent horn. Lily was frequently surprised that she wasn’t constantly dying from one illness or another, considering her frequency with touching and being in the faces of others. Her immune system was clearly bolstered by some sort of unknown magic. Or just catching everything under the sun from all of her cousins growing up. Being a snot-dripping child rolling in dirt did its job well. Lily nodded her head at the idea that Witch TV solved the problem with watching children. The family home had a television, but it had mostly been used for movies and nothing more than that. Her attention span really didn’t allow her to sit still long enough to watch an entire film, sadly. The children’s programming on Witch TV sort of did though…which she wasn’t ashamed to admit. ”I really like Vertic Alley,” Lily stated nonchalantly as she started to see the turn into Horizont appear. Only a little further until the pub. ”Its fun, and it has pretty good lessons. And the short episodes are easy to watch during my breaks.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

November 20, 2027 It seemed likely that Lily would take her up on her offer to accompany her to the Flobberworm and Lettuce, giving her a hug. She also asked if the Room of Requirement had survived the fire.
"I'm… not sure," Rose answered Lily thoughtfully. Unfortunately, she hadn't gone exploring the entire campus to know where the Room of Requirement was, if it was still there. The closest building to Hogwarts as it had been before was the MAGIC building, so there was a chance it was… somewhere in there. Someone was bound to know, most likely the members of the High Council who now oversaw the operations of all of Hogwarts. "There's a Class Outing Room at MYSTIC," added Rose. The effect was sort of similar to that of the Room of Requirement, though the magic that made it work was closer to that of the weather at the Ministry of Magic because the pupils couldn't just switch it to whatever they thought up. "It's brilliant. We can take the kids on trips without leaving the building."
That they didn't have to go off-site also kept the germs at bay, potentially. And it made it much easier to handle the children who, like Lily, needed a few reminders of what they were supposed to be doing. (Saying that, Rose hadn't had to remind her of the direction in which they were going to get lunch, so that was nice.)
"I really like Vertic Alley," Lily said on the subject of Witch TV's programming. "It's fun, and it has pretty good lessons. And the short episodes are easy to watch during my breaks."
"Yeah," Rose agreed, "it's cute." As Lily had pointed out, the lessons taught in the episodes were actually good. "I wonder if I could get them to bring the puppets to Hogwarts sometime?" she considered. "Viv must have connections." Then again, Rose guessed she had connections of her own, too. If she wrote to someone at Witch TV, then they wouldn't just ignore her.

▲ Lily was confused for a moment when her cousin mentioned that there was a room designed for class trips, without actually having to leave the school. Her first thought was that it was a room that happened to have a portkey in it, or could mass teleport people or something, but that obviously didn’t fit. And then it immediately went to that this was simply the Room of Requirement, adapted from what it had previously been. That was apparently not true. ”Wait,” she held up a hand to try and pause the conversation while she thought more on it. ”They can just like, make rooms that turn into other places like that? Why didn’t they do that before? We could have had classes on the beach or something!” Lily was sort of offended now because it seemed like they had missed out on a lot. Not to mention being able to start school way earlier. She was pretty sure if she had been given a primary magical education before entering Hogwarts, she would have done better. But just by a small amount. ”Oooh! That’s such a good idea!” Merlin, even she would like it if someone brought the puppets by. Like maybe for her birthday. That sounded awesome. ”I occasionally see her during the full moon, so I could always ask her if you can’t get a hold of her.” Lily had no idea how close Rose and Viv were, but it was the least she could do to get the puppets to the kids. ”Could you imagine how fun that would have been when we were that little? Merlin…” She really wanted her own plushie of the puppets now. Because who wouldn’t? They were cute and spread fun messages. After what she had been through in the last year, Lily felt like she deserved it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

November 20, 2027 "Wait," Lily instructed her, moving her hand out to indicate the need for her to stop with what she was saying. She was absolutely amazed that "they" could just make rooms that turned into other places. It was possible; it had been done at Hogwarts, and there were elements of the same sort of magic in the weather that was displayed at the Ministry despite its being underground. The work behind establishing something like that was beyond Rose's abilities as an individual, but it was incredibly useful as a teacher. "Why didn't they do that before?" Lily wondered, obviously feeling as though she'd missed out. "We could have had classes on the beach or something!"
Rose laughed a little and physically stopped so that her cousin could catch up her thoughts. A lot had changed since they had been at Hogwarts, and it hadn't been that long since then. Rose didn't regret her own schooling, and she was happy that there were so many more opportunities for magical children than there had been when she was a child. Her mother, especially, would have loved seeing so many new developments. Often, she wished she could update her mother about everything that had happened since she'd died. She knew that there wasn't any way to do that, but she could imagine her mother's pride.
Lily was excited by the idea of recruiting the Vertic Alley puppets for a visit to Hogwarts, too, so much so that she volunteered to ask Vivian herself. Since Rose and Viv lived together in Hogsmeade, it wouldn't be too hard to get ahold of her when the full moon had been a week prior, Rose thought, but she appreciated Lily's willingness. "Could you imagine how fun that would have been when we were that little? Merlin…"
"I know," Rose agreed with a smile. "I probably would've had a Nigel plushie. And the rest of the characters, honestly." She was a little old for that at her age, but she could see herself buying a set to keep in her classroom. That was acceptable, wasn't it?
