"I don't know…" Lyka mused. "Maybe you'd do another year at most? I feel like continuing to go after seven years already just seems exhausting. Even if they do let you pick your field and schedule."
There was some flexibility moving up to NEWT-level studies after OWLs because students didn't have to take everything that they had taken previously—and sometimes, they didn't really have a choice because it depended on how well they had done on their examinations. Most of the professors when he'd been at Hogwarts weren't ridiculously strict about requirements, but he'd heard stories about how tough it had been to get into certain classes at NEWT-level once upon a time. (Then again, some of that could have been a scare tactic to motivate students not to fail their exams…) The career training at LIFE, though, was different. It was closer to a Muggle university.
"I'm just done with it all. Honestly? I was done with it when I had to go to Ilvermorny for that year."
Felix nodded sympathetically. He had been at school for some of Elaine Dupree's reign of terror, but the Hogwarts kids who were in the year below him and younger had been put through even worse: The fire that had destroyed the castle as they knew it and left a shocking death toll, having to somehow move on after that to another school or job training, possibly finishing their education in another country or at least having to process everything that had happened so far from home… It was a miracle that any of them could function.
"Yeah, I'm sure," Felix agreed. The downside was that most families either didn't want to or didn't have the ability to homeschool their children for one reason or another, so that left Hogwarts as the option that was most readily available. "You don't exactly get the excitement of studying abroad when it's forced on you."
