Why be a wallflower when you can be a Venus fly trap? Evy flipped another page, finally sitting back and rubbing her eyes. The words began to blur together after some time, but the work had to be done. Interning in the Support department felt less than glamorous, but then Evy saw the rat race of interns competing for investigative journalism positions. Quidditch did interest Evy, but not enough to devote all her time to writing about it. But Evy had grown fond of writing about political subjects. She never thought it would, but it did interest her, not to mention her great attention to detail and discipline when building a story, which earned her a spot on the team of fact-checkers.
The back office had a few desks, but room for more should more fact-checkers be required. The other three worked various hours, and Evy could hardly stand them, to be honest. But if given the choice, she’d rather deal with Cornwallis than the other two. The worst was Smith, who hardly let you get two words in any conversation. In her momentary tunnel vision during her internship, Evy almost forgot the familiar faces present here. That Hufflepuff that sort of resembled a string bean, the camera gave him away. And once or twice, Evy had successfully hidden behind a tall plant. Her petite frame made it possible. However, that lasted about five days before Evy almost collided with her turning a corner. Jimmie had ‘recruited’ Evy to the Hogwarts school paper. Not because Evy had applied or shown interest but because the uptight girl’s back only ever bent when sticking her nose in something, typically uninvited.
The gum had given her away, chewing loudly beside Evy’s ear. Despite tired eyes, Evy took a break, leaning back while checking her phone messages. The corner of her mouth upturned as ‘Nate’ appeared on the lock screen. At least she had enough sense to disable message previews. As a budding journalist, Evy knew the importance of privacy and sources, and Merlin knew what Nate would send in a message at any given time of day. In her hand, her thumbs moved swiftly across the screen as she composed a sentence, trying to find a balance between sarcastic and suggestive with a dash of catty. The only other option in this conversation was stringing together barbed words to get the point across.
It had been that way with Nate since school. No reason to change what looked like it worked. She did notice when the tone changed anything less than prickly, but Evy had very early on made the mistake of pointing it out to him, which hadn’t gone well. So, she noticed and remembered but didn’t point it out. Evy had already begun to think about her next message, perhaps something a little less acerbic, when she nearly jumped out of her chair. ”Merlin—do you mind?” Her chair, thankfully, rocked forward so its front legs slammed against the floor. ”Ever heard of personal space, Blishwick?” Evy stood up and sat in the next chair to put some distance between them. Closing the file in her workspace in the process. Some article on the rising population of mooncalves somewhere.

CHEWING THOUGHTFULLY ON A WAD OF CHERRY gum, Jimmie had wandered into the back rooms of the Prophet out of boredom alone. She had submitted her final edits for her latest news piece, and wouldn't hear of any last minute amendments until Monday at the very earliest. It meant that her Friday was sort of done, unless she went and worked on an independent piece, but Jimmie already had intentions of doing just so the next morning. It meant she had to find something to occupy herself.
Evy never looked busy, even when she probably was, with all due respect. There was something about her bland stare and complete lack of hurry with whatever she occupied her time with. She was, however, a fantastic member of the Prophet. Or, so Jimmie had gathered from higher gossip mills. And, for all her kicking and screaming, Jimmie took a bit of responsibility for her soaring success among the ranks. A fact she let her good friend know on various occasions, lest she get complacent in Jimmie's absence.
From behind Evy's rocking desk chair, Jimmie made an attempt to peer over her shoulder as she typed lazily. Unfortunately, the device was held so close to her chest that Jimmie had to stoop shamelessly to almost perch her chin on Evy's shoulder just to catch a mere glimpse of the text thread below. The ends of her flaxen hair must have brushed against Evy's shoulder because the next thing she knew Evy was leaping forward in surprise and exasperation as she finally acknowledge Jimmie's presence with a huffing admonishment.
"Who're you texting?" Jimmie asked shamelessly, rounding Evy's desk to perch her backside on one side. She blew a pink bubble of cherry gum and raised her brows expectantly. "Is it Forrester?" She said with a curl of her upper lip, chewing a little aggressively at the thought of the rancid excuse of a boy Evy had the misfortune of carrying around like an Unforgiveable. "Do they let him use a magi!mobile from his position in the ninth circle of hell?" She drawled derisively. Jimmie had hated Nate for a very long time, especially since his jaunt in her home the summer her father lost his every loving mind to self appointed 'charity'.

Why be a wallflower when you can be a Venus fly trap? Quickly and out of habit, Evy immediately locked her phone screen. Such reflexes were built quickly with so many older sisters who also held an evident curiosity about the life of their youngest sister. She supposed Dakoda would have been the same were he still among the living. ”None of your business—that’s who.” Her answer was far more defensive than Evy cared to admit, but it was none of her colleague’s business. It wasn’t as if slander about him was new; she had only been a year under him at school, though she did well to avoid the temptation of ending up under him for that time.
At least Evy’s poker face came in handy. She stared blankly at Jimmie, refusing to give anything away. ”Merlin—I didn’t realize Nate was such a rare name. Is it rarer than Jameson?” At least it was better than Stephen Smith's number, whatever generation he was. Evy was convinced the man was using the world’s laziest pseudonym. Sitting back down, Evy cleaned up the paperwork that had shifted in the brief moments. ”What are you doing back here anyway? McLaggen finally escape?” Evy had to admit it was entertaining watching that tall photographer shrink in Jimmie’s presence, not that Evy would involve herself in that.

QUICK AS THE CRACK OF A WHIP, EVY YANKED her magi!mobile out of Jimmie's view. Her voice sharp and dismissive, though Jimmie didn't find it particularly insulting. Instead, she let her smirk grow, Evy's reaction practically a confession note written in ugly red ink. She settled herself on Evy's desk with a slight snicker of laughter, leaning forward on one hand braced on the wood beside her so that she could give Evy a long, knowing stare.
"Maybe so," She drawled, shaking out her hair and rocking her legs back and forth carelessly. Though her smirk didn't last, as Evy was as quick with her mouth as she was with her devil emojis, Jimmie thought disparagingly as she pulled away enough to display a slight curling down of her mouth. "Wow, didn't mean to hit a nerve." She said with a pop of her cherry gum, smarting a little at the retort. "Nate isn't rare, exactly, but the people who tolerate him are few and far between." She snapped back, her lip curling in abject disgust as she swung her legs until the table shifted gently with every back and forth.
Watching Evy make a point to appear busy, she plucked one of the forms from the pile Evy was gathering and pretended to peruse it leisurely. "McLaggen knows better," Jimmie replied back with a slight grin, knowing that it was a low blow, but understanding her lording influence of the Prophet photographer preceded them both. He took it like a champ, unlike Evy, who made a point of wriggling every time Jimmie cornered her to chat without warning. "I'm bored," She sighed truthfully, pouting out her bottom lip with a cheek-full of cherry chewing gum. "You make doing nothing like much more fun than I do." Jimmie taunted.

Why be a wallflower when you can be a Venus fly trap? Unfortunately, Jimmie wasn’t fazed by any of Evy’s responses. It was strange how insults hurled at the girl only seemed to fuel her, while others would have walked away with their tails between their legs, nursing whatever verbal wound Evy had set on them. And Blishwick’s eyes boring into Evy didn’t help. It was off-putting, to say the least. ”Last I checked, one might say the same about you.” Evy spoke matter-of-factly, her eyes glancing at the blonde as she completed her retort. Merlin, when had Evy ever needed to defend herself to Jimmie Blishwick? Why was she bothering?
Well, aside from the fact that Evy couldn’t help herself, she would rather willingly lie down on the train tracks at King’s Cross than let Jimmie have the last word. And when the topic had to do with Nate…well, even Evy was aware of how quickly she was prone to react. Evy grabbed the paper from Jimmie, returning it to its appropriate spot in the file. The last thing she needed was for things to become disorganized. ”Careful—you’ll have Slater at your doorstep before you know it.” Evy recalled how Nate had shared that little tidbit with Evy the previous February at that ridiculous charade of a festival on Valentine’s Day. Natural, Evy and Nate attended to watch everybody make a fool of themselves.
”I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m working.” Evy closed that particular file. She had finished it earlier in the day but needed to keep busy as she waited for Jimmie to leave. ”Unless you want your story delayed until Thursday.” Evy looked at Jimmie innocently. These things couldn’t be helped if someone kept distracting the fact-checkers. Not to mention, Evy had her own stories to write. ”I was trying to complete it before the day’s end, you know, for old time’s sake, but Karkaroff asked me to review his story first.” Evy found it easy to keep a straight face. The truth was, Evy had already reviewed Jimmie’s story with a few notes and Damian hadn’t submitted any story that day but the day prior. But Evy was also bored.
