it's just the time to pay the price for not listening to advice Ewan kicked the door behind him as he entered Human Resources, scrolls in hand. It was that time of year again. While processing for new interns was almost complete, Ewan got a head start on the interns the Ministry intended to hire full-time. Usually, very few were let go or moved to different departments, but every year, it never reached more than one hundred percent. And this time of year, Ewan learned quickly, was when he would see his older sister far more than he ever remembered seeing her his entire life. "Holly?" He called out before reaching his desk, dropping the scrolls in a prepared bin.
Hearing no answer, Ewan looked around. "Holly?" The solicitors were all before the Wizengamot, no doubt. While Ewan missed watching the proceedings, knowing his good work was in the hands of a barrister, he far preferred this sort of digging instead. Sitting behind his desk, Ewan began sorting the scrolls—new intern applications, pending hiring conversions, general new hires, and others. The other consisted of special requests from various departments on current employees. Sometimes, they didn't appear for a few days, or their excuses were shoddy at best for their absences.
He grumbled, wondering if seeking a cup of the terrible tar-like Ministry coffee was worth it. Deciding against it, Ewan merely waited for Holly to return so they could begin their work. And he only hoped by Merlin's good graces she had completed her end of the paperwork. She processed all new hires with her colleagues, and Ewan's work was only one part of that—the background check.

May 1, 2020 Working with her younger brother had been strange at first, but Holly had since become used to Ewan's working in Human Resources with her. Though their personalities were different, they made a pretty good team in the workplace. Ewan was more organized, but Holly had more years of experience. In combination, they somehow meshed, and they had gotten to know each other even better through having to work together as part of the team responsible for hiring other people. Holly didn't know what it was like for a family-run business, but the processes that were in place at the Ministry kept it from turning into a free-for-all.
Internship season was always their busiest time of year, since everyone from Hogwarts (and anywhere else) who hoped to get a foot in the door at the Ministry was applying, sometimes for multiple positions at once. There were so many applications to sort through—and then sort again and again. Reading a bunch of CVs thrown together by seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds with no real experience in anything except maybe Quidditch got old, and the repetitive movements of stacking, stamping, filing, and so on made Holly question why she didn't wear dragon-hide gloves to keep from getting paper cuts.
Having stepped away from her desk in order to magically heal a paper cut deep enough that it had drawn blood, Holly could hear Ewan calling out for her. (She hadn't heard him the first time, but she heard him what was actually the second time around.) "Coming!" she hollered back to him, returning a few moments later to see Ewan sitting at his desk, working his way through even more scrolls.
"What did you need?" Holly then asked, approaching Ewan and stretching her shoulders.

it's just the time to pay the price for not listening to advice Ewan looked up to spot his older sister. Part of him hadn’t expected her to appear so quickly if he was honest. Sometimes, she was off on a break or hand-delivering a memo as an excuse to gossip with a secretary on another floor. ”I have the reports for the applicants.” Switching gears, he waved his wand, causing a stack of scrolls to stack themselves on a shelf behind him. The remaining documentation was the reports they would file with the employee applications.
”Were there any new applications from last month?” Any applicant to the Ministry of Magic could expect a response in no less than a month. It took time to gather all the applications and review resumes and CVs. Then, whoever made that first pass was handed off to those such as Ewan as they investigated pertinent details of the applicant's background. The last thing they needed were unsavory characters within the Ministry. That wasn’t to say that certain last names didn’t raise eyebrows. However, when those individuals had no red flags of their own, there were little human resources could say.

May 1, 2020 Ewan informed her that he had the reports for the applicants, which was more exciting for his team than for anyone else. And probably for the applicants, even though they weren't aware of the goings-on behind the scenes. If everything checked out, they were that much closer to being hired. If it didn't, well, they were more likely to find their application in the bin from that point forward.
"Were there any new applications from last month?"
"Yeah," Holly answered her brother. Even in the middle of winter, they would end up getting applications. Holly wasn't sure why anyone would bother at that time of year, but it was inevitable. The Ministry had so many positions in so many different offices that there was always some role that needed filling, whether or not she was really interested in doing the work to fill it.
She began to gather up the relevant files and then plopped them on top of Ewan's desk. "Here. They should be in alphabetical order." She was pretty sure that they were, at least, and flipped through the first few to check while muttering the alphabet song to herself.
