Hogwarts held many secrets, and the entire castle seemed to be bewitched in some sort of way. From the secret passages, to the Room of Requirements, even down to the staircases... Out of all the bewitches, the stairs was one of the most annoying, but you grew used to it. You had to remember which trick steps to skip, and which particular staircases liked to move the most. Bay had been navigating them for two years, and was positive they held no more surprise for her.
Braelynn, or Bay (since it seemed no one could ever remember her full name...), was heading for the library, which was her usual hide out. The witch practically lived in the long rows of books. Most people thought it was insane, until they learned her class scores. Today was no different, even though it was the weekend, with no classes to worry about. The whole way, one of the Hufflepuff seventh years seemed to be heading in the same direction. She knew him, but they'd never really interacted. When their eyes had met at the bottom of the stairs, she'd offered a warm smile and polite hello, but that was it. He was ahead of her, waiting on a landing for the next staircase to move back, having just barely missed it. When she stepped onto the same landing though, she felt movement at her back.
Quickly she turned, just in time to watch helplessly as the staircase she'd come spun out of reach. Her mouth dropped open in shock, and stumbled a step back as the railing sprang up to prevent anyone from falling.
Turning back to see if the other staircase had returned, she spotted the railing up there as well. They were stranded... "... We're stuck." She finally said, looking at the slightly older teen, her disbelief easy to read in her voice and expression. In her two years at Hogwarts, this was the first time something like this had happened.

Zander didn't really mind the magical staircases playing tricks on people. He felt that life was too short for such thoughts. So instead, he simply whipped his guitar out whenever he got stuck for a moment or two. For now however the stairs seemed to be behaving. As he stepped onto the next set of stairs, he caught himself glancing at a girl beside him. He gave a big smile and a wave, and her reply was far more simple. It was expected and Zander moved on, heading up the stairs ahead of her.
He looked around with a raised eyebrow as the stairs seemed to betray them, causing them to be stuck on this particular staircase. The girl turned to him, looking incredibly shocked at the idea that they were stuck. He notice a slight hint of a french accent in her tone and smiled, "ah, transfer student? Aw, this happens a lot." He moved down the stairs toward her. Then he recognized her, she was the sister of Desirae Rosseau.
He shrugged, "well, may as well get comfortable," he said, sitting down on the stair behind her. He slipped the guitar strap off his shoulders and nodding to the stair beside him. "Care to sit...sorry, I rudely don't know your name," he said.

Transfer student.
The Hufflepuff boy caught on quick, probably from the accent. It was hard to ignore. Braelynn smiled. She didn't feel much like a transfer after two years, but the school could still surprise her. The boy on the other hand wasn't fazed by the situation. "Yes, but I thought I was past the point of still being surprised." She sheepishly replied. "I still have a lot to learn." She added, that well trained smile never wavering.
The boy dropped down to the step, a guitar quickly being cradled in his lap. That was right.. She hadn't noticed it slung over his shoulder until that moment. As he offered her the spot next to him, she hesitated for only a second, before moving to sit, sweeping her skirt out to avoid wrinkling it. "Thank you." Her smile seemed more genuine in that moment. "I'm Braelynn, Braelynn Rousseau. Everyone calls me Bay though." She introduced herself.
She couldn't help but look at the guitar. She'd never played an instrument growing up, between all the etiquette lessons and studying, she hadn't had time. "How long have you been playing?" The girl asked as she clasped her hands around her knees. @zander

Zander chuckled at her comment, "To be honest, I don't think anyone gets past that point. I've seen you around though, how long have you been here?" he felt bad that he didn't know, but honestly Zander wasn't a very observant person in the first place. Her smile got Zander staring, and he really wondered why he had never noticed the girl before.
He watched as she, in a very lady like fashion, took a seat on the step beside her. "Braelynn... oh! Yes, you have two sisters," he said, mildly remembering the Rousseau girls. He glanced down at his guitar as she asked how long he had been playing. "Oh man, for as long as I can remember," he said, his smile growing larger by the second.
He lifted the guitar and started to play a soft melody as he spoke, "do you play anything, Bay?" he asked, glancing her way with his best debonair smile. It just kinda came naturally, honestly.

Braelynn's smile turned a little shy at his question, as if embarrassed that she was a transfer student. "Two years. We moved here just before my fourth year.". It was so strange, to have been at this school for so long. The transition had not been easy for Bay, but it seemed she was finally fully accustomed to the culture of Hogwarts. It was finally starting to grow on her.
Bay's expression almost lit up when he mentioned her sisters with an affectionate smile. "Desirae and my twin." It was easy to tell that she loved her siblings dearly. Of course she didn't always agree to what they did- her smile almost faltered at the thought. Desirae... Quickly, she banished the thought away, she couldn't worry about Desirae's antics right now, couldn't afford to.
He got so... excited at her next question. She blinked as she watched that smile of his, it was almost contagious. After a moment, she laughed softly, lifting a hand to hide it. Her giggles were under control very quickly, but that smile of hers wouldn't be so easily subdued. "You must really like it." she finally said. At his question, she shook her head. "No, unfortunately. I wish I did though."

Zander let out a long whistle, "Two years, wow, that's a long time for me to be oblivious to you," he was dead serious, too. He should have paid more attention sooner. This situation on the stair was starting to seem like a major blessing. "Awesome! Do you guys get along? I've only got brothers," he added with a little shrug, "and we don't share shoes or anything like that. Do sisters do that?" he was joking at the start of the question but then he was actually quite puzzled by the thought.
Her little laugh, her lifting her hand to hide her mouth, Zander couldn't help but chuckle again at that. "Hey," he said, reaching up to touch the tips of her fingers hovering over her mouth, "smiles aren't meant to be hidden!" His smile was just as bright and wild as ever, of course.
"I love it. And hey, I could teach you!" once again, he was quite serious about the offer. "I've only got one guitar, I'm sentimental like that, but I could definitely teach you. If you really wanted to learn, I mean." He raised an eyebrow at her, almost as if he was giving her a dare.

Braelynn's smile shrank a little, becoming more shy and reserved. The way he'd said it... it almost sounded like he'd wished this had happened sooner. Wait, why was she feeling a little embarrassed by it? Determined to quickly hide the emotion, she opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out. Nothing. Quickly she closed her mouth, hoping he hadn't noticed as she masked it with that fake, practiced smile of hers. She forced the smile to stay, trying not to let her emotions slip up again. "Yes, but we all have our differences. We've gone through a lot together. It would have been nice to have a brother though. How many do you have?" Oh, she was sure her parents would have loved to have a son. Instead, they were stuck with three girls.... His remark about shoes made her perfectly practiced expression slip a little, just about chuckling again. "When we were younger we did."
Smiles aren't meant to be hidden! Bay froze as he gently touched her hand, her eyes widening slightly. They went even wider as he spoke. To say she was surprised was an understatement. The girl always felt such a need to be proper, to never step a hair out of line, even when she knew her parents couldn't see. No matter how painful it was inside, she kept everything back. That one comment though had felt like a hot knife running through butter. It reminded her that she didn't like keeping everything hidden and withdrawn from the world. Her hand slowly lowered, dropping back into her lap. This time... a truly genuine smile crossed her lips. "You're right." was all she could bring herself to say.
As he offered to teach her, she hesitated. Her gaze wandered quickly, this time slightly nervous. Not at their current predicament, but to see if any students going up and down the staircases were close enough to overhear the conversation. Satisfied that neither of her sisters were in sight, she looked back at Zander. That nervous look disappeared. She knew what she should do. Politely decline, but thank him for the offer. But as he raised an eyebrow, she caught the message. Her lips pursed slightly. That one side of her, the side she tried so hard to keep under lock and key, was practically screaming at her. The other, more reasonable side was trying it's hardest to convince her this would be a terrible idea, and it would somehow get back to her parents. The louder of the two sides won. "Have you ever taught someone else how to play the guitar before?" Was her answer, her agreement clear as day.

He felt his heart stink a little when her smile lessened, but he figured it was just because he had shocked her with his compliment. He let it go, only to chuckle when she spoke again. "Aw I would have loved a sister. Would have spoiled her rotten and beat up any guy who looked at her," Zanders mind slipped to Soph for a moment, and how he had sort of hijacked her as his sister. He was pulled back to the present by her question, "three brothers. Good guys, we're very diverse though." He nodded as she talked about the younger Rosseau house where they shared shoes. She seemed nostalgic in that moment. He could tell it was a happy memory. Though, he couldn't imagine Desirae sharing anything.
When her eyes widened at his touch, his did too. He wasn't expecting that reaction from his self, but she looked so... Gentle, and innocent. It made his smile shrink a little, but not out of sadness. He was focused on her. He moved his hand away as she dropped hers into her lap, admitting he was right. He had forgotten what they were even talking about.
He waited patiently for her to answer him, letting her look around no doubt for someone she didn't want to embarrass herself in front of. As she made eye contact with him again, he could see fire in them. She was up for a challenge. That made his smile grow into a smirk, his eyes alight as well. "Yes, once. Didn't go anywhere though. They were too chicken to keep going," his voice was low as a chuckle came through again.

"Your poor mother! Four boys?" Braelynn softly exclaimed. Coming from anyone else, her comment would have sounded teasing. This was Braelynn though, as he was probably seeing, her tone of voice didn't change much, it always stayed so calm and collected, except for that one moment where he'd shocked her... But, it seemed like she'd shocked in too. Neither of them had spoken when their gazes' met. It wasn't until they'd looked away, or rather, when she'd looked away, that Bay started to think. Why had he given her that look..?
Braelynn wasn't worried about embarrassing herself. Yes, she didn't like to be embarrassed, or to fail at anything, but she also had the determination to not quite anything due to initial failures. No, she was... worried. About her sisters catching them. They'd only been sitting here a few minutes, but she knew he wasn't the sort her sisters, or parents, would approve of. And that was just his personality! She didn't even know what his blood status was! Even though... It didn't matter much to her. It never had, no matter how hard her parents had drilled it into her head. As he explained the person had been to chicken, she raised an eyebrow, silently asking if he was thinking she was the same. "I don't give up easily." She retorted. This was a girl who's whole life was finding out how to overcome failures and short comings. She didn't give up.

Zander rolled his eyes at the 'poor mother' comment, but chuckled. "I'm not sure if she would have been able to raise girls. At least, not delicate little things," he said. "She loved every second of it," he gave a sarcastic little wink before shifting a little to lean back on the steps.
She didn't give up easily... Zander gave a happy, perky little smile at her at the comment and whipped his guitar around to the front, "here, take it," he said, offering the guitar to Braelynn. But, as soon as he had said those words the stair started moving again, back to it's original destination. "Nooo," Zander said dramatically, throwing his head back and looking up at the ceiling.
"These stairs think they're so funny. Guess we better reschedule unless.. where were you headed?" he asked.

Braelynn wondered what life would have been been life with a brother. Her father would definitely have been pleased to have a proper heir. "If your brothers are anything like you, I'm sure she did." The girl said with a smile. From anyone else, the comment might come off flirtatious, but she wasn't the sort to make such a bold statement. No, it was that ladylike demeanor of hers, her comment the sort you'd make at a party to impress a guest.
Bay's own smile brightened at how excited he got. He was just so.... adorable, almost like a child (even though he was older then her...), And then, before she could take the offered guitar, she felt the staircase lurch, moving once again. The Ravenclaw frowned, finally looking away from him as the staircase shifted back to it's normal position. There were several students who'd stopped at the landing they were moving to, waiting for the staircase the two were currently sitting on. Thankfully, Bay didn't see either of her sisters in the crowd. She only looked back when he spoke. She had to think for a moment. Where had she been going..? "Just to the library, to study. Nothing important." She said. Wait, why had she said that last part? Since had studying, which she did all day, everyday, become unimportant?

A compliment. Once again the French girl was surprising him. It sounded like fact, rather than some frivolous comment tossed carelessly into conversation. He didn't know many people that talked this way. He simply gave a little bow of the head in thanks at her words. He nodded at her words about going to the library, standing and offering a hand down to her. "Well, I'm sure you don't want to get trampled," he started, "I know many a secret corner of the library... however, music may be a little distracting there..." he added, stroking his chin with his free hand in contemplation.
"Well, you have two choices here, Braelynn. You could go study all on your lonesome with nothing but your books, parchment an quills to keep you company..." he made a faux frowny face, "ooorrr you could join a charming, kind gentlemen on a jaunt to find an abandoned room to begin your learning of the ancient art of the guitar," he raised the guitar a little, as well as giving a little double eyebrow raise as well. He was saying a lot of words right now, trying to be funny or proper or something. Still, the offer was there.

Braelynn smiled that well trained and polite smile of hers at his silent thanks. It was more out of habit, and not necessarily intentional. It seemed her genuine smiles had vanished without a trace... Accepting the hand he offered her, she got to her feet, brushing her skirt out in the same motion. "Thank you." There was that well trained smile once again.
That 'fake smile' vanished though as he spoke, presenting two options. Braelynn clasped her hands behind her back and tilted her head slightly. "Hmm... Both are tempting offers." She started, her proper demeanor vanishing for a moment as a mischievous spark appeared in her eyes.. "I suppose... My studies can wait just a little longer. If only because we'd both be lonely otherwise." That look vanished after she spoke, realization striking. Why was she acting like that? What was it about this boy that, not once, but twice managed to bring out this side of her? Better yet, knowing this, why wasn't she leaving? Why was she staying, knowing that he brought out the side of her that her parents despised?

Zander was both surprised and pleased that Braelynn was contemplating his offer. He stayed casual, trying not to show too much stock in her answer. He noticed a little spark in her eyes, only for a brief moment, before she agreed that the homework would have to wait. "Well, even Ravenclaws get lonely and we can't have that, right?" he agreed. Standing, he offered a hand down to her to help her up.
"In all honesty I can think of many places that would do the trick. What do you think, dank and dreary? Windows for sunlight? Fireplace? What's your niche?" he asked as they started to step off the staircase and onto the landing. It looked as though they had arrived on the fifth floor, which was a good enough floor to find somewhere. They wouldn't want to go back and get caught on the stairs again, now would they?

Braelynn shouldn't have agreed. She knew what her parents expected of her. Things that wouldn't be accomplished by any involvement with this Hufflepuff. She didn't know his blood status, for one, something her parents would want to know immediately. They wouldn't approve if he was anything less then a pureblood, but even then, it all depended on his families status. To them, just being a pureblood wasn't enough. A part of her didn't care what they thought. So what if he didn't meet their insane standards? But the more logical part quietly reminded her what would happen if they found out. It was like a hot knife, her confidence in her decision wavering a little. To reassure herself, she scanned the stairway once again for anyone that could rat her out. Still no sign of her sisters or... him...
"Somewhere bright." She quickly said, looking back at him with that masking smile of hers, the one that hid her real emotions well. She looked up at the steps ahead of them. The fifth floor. The Ravenclaw common rooms were on the floor. Instantly she knew of the perfect spot. Someplace she knew her sisters wouldn't find them. That masking smile of hers broke away to reveal the sincere and true smile underneath. "I know a place it's this w-..!" Braelynn cut off, that smile vanishing so quickly it was almost as if it'd never been there. She wasn't looking at Zander anymore. She'd spotted something, or rather someone, a few flights below them. Someone that, the mere sight of them made her pale a little. "I... I'm sorry, I just realized, I have to go. Maybe tomorrow?" She apologized with a shaky smile. She wanted to stay, that much was clear. But whoever she'd spotted... Her reaction was unmistakable. It was fear.
Quickly, she turned and disappeared down the hall.
