So Scorp had occasionally struggled in potions when he was younger. Sure he still had to spend extra time down here in the potions classroom to make sure he actually understood the concepts he was learning. Sure he kept that a secret from pretty much every single person he knew. Well, except there was one person who knew his secret.
He scowled at the thought. Irina Krum. She was brilliant at potions, almost to a level that Scorp found his mouth gaping open in awe when she worked beside him. Still, it had been years since she had helped him out. A part of him wanted to reach out to her as a friend but... they never really had a friend relationship. Mostly just an in class one. Still, he respected her like crazy.
Sooooo maybe he was secretly hoping that she would stumble down here. Not because this potion was giving him any trouble (it was, but he wouldn't say nor think that), but because he knew he could learn from. As much as Scorp hated people being better at stuff than he was, he respected the opportunity to learn something.

Irina had special permission from the Potions Master to conduct potion experiments when the classroom was empty, and today happened to be a day where she had experienced a brainstorm while daydreaming during her morning break. Running the ingredients through her head she shouldered her bag and left Gryffindor tower in a hurry. A few staircase changes and a run in with a classmate later, Rina was briskly walking down the low ceilinged stone corridor towards the classroom.
When she entered the room, she found she wasn't alone. Scoripus Malfoy seemed to have beaten her down there, working on something. She closed the large wooden door loudly to alert him to her presence. "Scoripus," she greeted briskly, setting her things down on a worktable on the other side of the room. Curiosity, per usual, got the better of her and she inched towards his cauldron, trying to peer down into what he was making. "What...exactly are you trying to make here?" she asked, not seeing anything in his cauldron yet.

Scorpius didn't look up when he heard someone come in. He kept his eye on the potions book and the empty cauldron in front of him. As the door closed, he heard his name. He whipped around, recognizing the voice and his jaw dropped. This was just his luck, or fate, or something like that. "Uh," he closed his mouth that was apparently gaping open and turned to the empty cauldron beside him.
"Trying to get started on this," he said, adding his usual nonchalant smile and tone as he pushed the book toward he to show her the potion. "To be honest my last few attempts were rather pathetic. Came down here to practice it so I dont' have to embarrass myself in class," he chuckled. The last thing he wanted was for Rose to have a reason to mock him and to prove that she was better than him. Not that she was. But still, it would be nice to not give her any reasons to think so.
"Have you made it?" he asked, turning back to look at her. She was a year younger than him and probably wasn't studying the same potions in class, but he wouldn't put it past her to work ahead.

Rina peered down into the Potions book he was reading, silently going over the instructions in her head. "I have made this one before, yes. It's a little complicated but with some patience you can probably get it right." she told him. She walked away and headed over to the store cupboard, relisting the ingredients in her head as she pulled them off the shelves. Arms full, she went back over to Scorpius' table and set them down with a faint clatter. "There we go, that's everything you'll need for this one," she told him. She prodded the bottom of the cauldron and the flames crackled merrily. She took a quick glance at the instructions, then looked back at him. "Right, for the Elixer to Induce Euphoria you first and foremost need to add the Shrivelfig," she instructed. She waited, then gestured for him to continue. "Well go on then, it won't hurt you," she teased.

She moved and talked so efficiently and without hesitation that Scorp felt sick to his stomach. He was like that withe very other subject... why was this giving him such a hard time? He didn't want to show his weakness, however, and kept still until she had placed the items in front of him and then instructed him to add the Shrivelfig. He looked over at her with a little glare at first only to see the look on her face and realize that she was teasing him. "Oh, okay," his glare broke and he probably looked rather... frazzled as he lifted the ingredient. He stopped, turning to look at the book. Luckily this was something that was supposed to be placed in whole so he didn't have to do any added preparation. He put it in before turning to the next ingredient.
"Okay, it says to cut the Keigh into four horizontal sections..." he lifted the knife, lowering it to the ingredient before cutting it as instructed. Once finished, he added it like it said and rolled his shoulders. "Gods, I don't know why this makes me so tense."

Rina shook her head and tried to hide a small smile playing at her lips. "It could be the simple fact, Scorpius, that this is the one subject you're not perfection at," she said, not unkindly. "It's okay, I know our bargain. I'm not going to tell anyone you're not perfect at Potions." She remembered the first time she had run into him down here during their second year. She had been eager to try one of the more advanced potions in their textbook with the Potions Masters' permission, and Scorpius had been down there as well, for the opposing reason. He had warned her not to tell anyone of his potion skills and she had obliged, and they had formed a strange and unlikely friendship since.
She took a quick peak at the next step and pulled the ingredient out of the kit. "Alright then, the next step is to add these porcupine quills. The potion should turn blue; then you're going to want to stir until it turns purple." She instructed, and gestured towards the cauldron. "Come on now, I have faith in you," she reassured him.

”This is just one subject you’re not perfection at,” at the horrible but true words, Scorpius found himself twitch. He groaned, not wanting to think anything less of himself. Scorpius was always confident, always the bell of the ball. He hated someone seeing him like this. He did as she said, adding the porcupine quills. The potion did turned blue, and as she reassured him he started to turn. ”I think I just get too impatient. You know with potions you have to sometimes let it steep for a while or stir or wait. I just like being able to burn through a subject and get down to the gist of it and learn as far ahead as I can but with this... I have to focus on it so much that I’m just at the same level,” or lower, ”than everyone else. And I can’t stand that!” The panic rose in his voice a little more but he cleared his throat, turning back to the potion as it started to turn purple.

Rina stifled a chuckle at Scorpius' involuntary twitch. There he went again, believing he had to be the very best at everything. She was surprised he wasn't in Ravenclaw with the perfect Rose Weasley instead of Slytherin, but she expected that had to do with his heritage more than his brains. "Patience is definitely a virtue when it comes to Potionmaking, something I highly recommend you practice," she told him, not unkindly. "Once you get the patience thing down, it'll come easily to you. You have the brains for it, just need the focus."
She looked at the potion, which was turning to purple as it was supposed to. She smiled and nodded with approval. "Right, add the sprig of peppermint to reduce the side effects, and now comes the hardest part - you need to wait 30 minutes while it stews," she said, holding back another laugh. She sat down on a stool and pulled out a small hourglass she kept in her bag. She tapped it and muttered something under her breath and the timer began to count down. "Now the second this finishes you'll want to add the seven Sopophorous beans - the potion should turn pink after," she instructed. She pulled out her small silver knife. "The beans are tricky to cut so you're going to want to crush out the juice and collect it in a small bowl before you add it in," she put the knife down on the table next to the small wooden bowl and beans. She looked back over at him. "So....how is life?" she asked him, trying to make conversation.

Patience was hard. But he could see how it was so important. He nodded and proceeded to follow her instructions as she started to make small talk. He shrugged at her words, "in all honesty? Pretty bollocksed up," he said. He hadn't really talked to anyone about his feelings as of late, and he wasn't going to give all the details to Irina, but it was kind of nice to know that there was someone around who wasn't directly involved. "It'll be fine though. I hope. What about you? How are things in the famous Krum household?" he smiled a little impishly at her. He understood being part of a well known family. It wasn't the easiest thing, but it could be fun to use your families reputation for your benefit. If not just for a jokes sake, like he and Al did. Irina Rose Krum

Irina raised an eyebrow at Scorpius’ comment. Pretty bollocksed up couldn’t be good, but he failed to elaborate and she didn’t want to push him. They may be friends, but their friendship was based more off her knowledge of potions and willingness to help him than anything else. His girlfriend seemed to be alright, though she didn’t know too much about Ondina to really know her well. She watched in silence as he crushed the Sopophorous beans, even after he asked about her family. She wasn’t sure how to respond really; he hadn’t seemed to want to give much up to her, and she didn’t really want to unload on her mommy issues either.
“It’s…probably how you’d think it’d be growing up in a household where both parents are famous Quidditch players,” she said finally with a small chuckle. “My brother keeps talking about where he’s going after school ends for him this year, which is a strange thing to think of,” she added. She checked on the potion; they still had about fifteen minutes until the beans would go in. “So I’m guessing you don’t want to be a Potions Master when you leave?” she asked, half teasing.

Scorp understood growing up with everyone knowing who your parents were, at least his father. Irina had to deal with both parents being famous for, well, pretty famous reasons so it must have been hard on her growing up. Still, he was glad she turned out mostly normal. "Oh? Where is your brother talking about going?" he asked. It was weird to think of anyone graduating, especially himself. Still, he was incredibly comfortable with the idea of moving on. Then, she joked about his future career and he shook his head, "whatever do you mean?" he chuckled, leaning forward a little to look into the potion before pulling away again. "I want to travel... be a researcher. Like work for the department of mysteries, you know?"Irina Rose Krum

Irina laughed when Scorpius asked her where her brother wants to go. “Where doesn’t he want to go?” she said, still chuckling. “He wants to play for Bulgaria or England’s national Quidditch team and travel the world, meet pretty girls who swoon over him for being the second coming of our father. Not that he’s not talented on the Quidditch pitch,” she continued, adding the last part in quickly. She and her older brother got along fairly well, and while he did enjoy the attention his Quidditch notoriety got him, he still always made time for her and her sisters.
“I’m in your shoes, I want to travel too, but I want to be a Curse-Breaker for Gringotts, not working in the Department of Mysteries. I can see the allure of that department though,” she told him. She thought back to a few days ago when Lily had suggested traveling to find Camelot’s vanishing ruins and smiled. “Lily and I are going round to try and find the ruins of Camelot over the summer,” she added, not really sure why she was telling him this. She looked over and saw it was time to add the sophophorus beans. “Right then, now add the bean juice to the potion and then the wormwood, and stir six times counter clockwise. The potion should turn yellow,” she instructed.

Scorp rolled his eyes as she went on about her older brother. He wasn't a little surprised that the eldest Krum was what he was. He had heard about the amazing Viktor Krum, of course he had. He had seen her brother play and he was pretty good at it. "Well, good for him. I doubt I'll get many adoring fans in my line of work," he chuckled. Plus, there was only one girl he wanted... "Camelot? Why so?" he asked. He thought that sounded like a really fun trip, actually. "Well, you'd be a great curse breaker," he complimented. Then he went on to follow her instructions with the potion, after the six turn the potion turned yellow and Scorp grinned, turning to her, "I've never got it yellow before. Thanks!" he said, turning back to the potion. Irina Rose Krum

Irina laughed; she could tell that Scorpius thought her elder brother was ridiculous, and she actually agreed with. "Don't worry, I think he's as ridiculous as you do. We don't all feel that we need to have an adoring audience to do jobs we love," she reasoned, then smiled when he mentioned that she'd make a good Curse-breaker. "Thanks! I've been meaning to talk to Professor Aminev, she used to be a Curse-breaker until she got injured, to see what the training was like," she told him.
Looking down at the yellow potion, she smiled. "Great! Now, most people nowadays add a sprig of peppermint to reduce some of the side effects, but it's totally up to you whether or not you want to do that. Otherwise you can bottle up a sample of it and give it to the professor to show your hard work," she said, feeling proud that she had actually helped someone take a step up in Potions. She had been tutoring Scorpius for a few years now and this was the first time where REAL progress had been made. "Camelot because there's just so much historical mystery behind it; was it real or was it a myth? We're going to find out," she told him. She was quite looking forward to the summer now that Lily and her had made those plans.

He chuckled as Irina said she also found her brother to be ridiculous. At her next point he nodded, "oh, yeah. Professor Aminev would be a great resource for that," he agreed. Then she spoke of the peppermint and he smiled, but shook his head. "I think that I should just not tamper with it anymore," he lifted his wand and pulled out a flask, using magic to fill his flask with the potion. "Thanks for you help," he said, lifting it to wiggle it slightly in between them before placing it safely in a pocket of his leather brown bag. Then he nodded at her reasons for going to Camelot, "sounds like a great time. Granted, I'm not sure Lily would be too interested in the history side of things, you may have to amp up the mystery for that kid," he chuckled. He knew her well, due to Albus being his best friend, and he knew she had a short attention span. Irina Rose Krum
