overall personality:
Edmund is a very conflicted sixteen-year-old. Growing up, he constantly felt overshadowed by his older siblings and truly believed that he couldn't live up to the expectations they were setting. After a while he decided that he didn't want to. He just didn't care anymore, or that's what he told himself. He still tried to find his own way of making his parents proud, but struggled with those efforts. When his father died, the small amount of confidence Edmund had shattered. Then he found out about magic.
During his first year at Hogwarts, Edmund began to find himself. He gained confidence in his schoolwork and let his sarcastic, snarky personality shine through. After all, since he was in Slytherin not many people would judge him for that. Still, sometimes he reverted back to the Edmund before he knew about magic, the dark depressed Edmund who really didn't care for much, other than himself.
Edmund has a need for attention and for glory, often being jealous of the fact that he isn't the eldest child in the family. He always wants to better himself and often compares himself to others in this pursuit. More often than not, he compares himself to Peter and almost always decides that he doesn't measure up.
Edmund is sassy and likes to seem witty and smart. He often shows this by coming up with good on the spot insults and comebacks. This can make him a lot of enemies, which he is not averse to. He doesn't really care what other people think of him, as a general rule. However, he does care what his family thinks, as well as what his close friends think. By now, his fifth year, he is pretty confident of who he is.

history:
Alright, I'll admit it. Lucy explained what happened to us better than I probably could ... how it all started, that is. Either way, I'm not interested in trying to top her at the moment, so here's how she explained it:
"It all started with a look. But that is how most things start. Hannah Prewitt was out for a walk when she met Prince William Henry Windsor of England. Of course she didn't know he was a prince til they actually started dating, it happened kind of like a fairy tale. They started seeing more of each other and then one day he drops this bomb: "by the way, I'm a prince." She didn't believe him until he took her to meet his family. After all that pomp and circumstance, there was nothing she could do but believe him! Eventually they got married, it was a really romantic ceremony and I am pretty sure the entire world was watching either on TV or on the internet. Maybe I should mention, they are both Muggles. So far as we know, no magical blood in the family except for me and my sister and two brothers.
Many people think that royal life is easy and just like a fairy tale. Well I can tell you, it is rough work. My father, William, was not even the crown prince but he had just as much responsibility as my uncle. He worked in the parliament and my mother was a lawyer for the royal household. They tried to live their lives as ordinary as they could, so that was where children came in. Over the years they had four kids. William Peter, Susan, Edmund, and then I came in last. We lived in a modest muggle home in the country. My mother insisted that we didn't live in the city or the palace, she said she didn't want us to end up being spoiled. But we still spent plenty of time in the palace visiting cousins and spending long weekends there. It was especially common to stay at the palace during times of crisis or election times. I always hated elections.
One year, when I was about 8, we were staying at the palace for a big party my grandparents (the king and queen) were throwing. I always loved the parties, fancy dresses, hair styles, and the make-up. After we were ready to go my dad said he had something he needed to take care of and would meet us there. We arrived at the party and sat down for dinner. It was always my dad's job to give some sort of speech before dinner and so we looked for him. He wasn't there yet. My grandma sent someone to look for him. When the guard came back his face was pale. The next few hours were a blur. My mom rushed me and my siblings into a different section of the palace and told us not to leave the room. Then she left. I didn't even find out until the next day that my father had been assassinated.
The palace put the whole royal family into protective custody for a few weeks while they figured everything out. We were moved to a summer home on the coast. That was when things really changed. Peter got it first. Weird things started happening around him. Once the maid's skirt turned blue, another time a dog that was barking at him ended up on the roof. It was almost like he was sick because it wasn't long after that me, Edmund, and Susan all started having weird things happen around us as well.
No one knew what was going on until a representative of some place called Hogwarts, came to talk to our mother. She wouldn't let us in the same room as she talked with him, but after he left she told us. We had magic. All four of us. He said that it was rare to have 4 muggle-borns in the same family, but not impossible. He also gave my mom two envelops for Peter and Susan. On September 1st, they got to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. My mom wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but eventually they convinced her that the safest place they could be was at a school with magic!"
Now let's get some things straight. I did not want to stay at home while Peter and Susan went off to explore a hidden castle and learn magic- that truly wasn't fair at all. But there was really nothing I could do about it. Even if there was, Mom wouldn't have let me go early. So that year was hard, especially with Dad gone. I missed him. Out of everyone in my family, I felt like I got along with Dad the best. It's just my sort of luck that he got taken away from me.
That's beside the point. A year after Peter and Susan went, I got to go. I'm not going to lie, Hogwarts was better than I ever could have dreamed. Magical, exciting and different. Best of all, there were lots of people there. I wasn't alone with my siblings. In fact, I got sorted into Slytherin while Peter was in Gryffindor and Susan in Ravenclaw. That meant I got to have more privacy from them than ever before. The next year Lucy joined us and went into her own house, Hufflepuff. Now don't get me wrong, I love my siblings and we are very close with one another. I just ... also like having my space sometimes.
This last year has gotten weird though. All the Muggleborn attacks have made the atmosphere at Hogwarts change drastically. Peter wants to take us out, but I'm not going. Not even Mom could make me. I mean, I understand the danger, but I love it here. For once I feel like I fit in somewhere other than in my family and I don't want to give that up. I just hope they find whoever is behind the attacks before it gets to that.
