It had been a long summer, the first summer Asa had spent as a real adult, with a job and everything. All the effort had been worth it, though; scrimping and saving and camping out in their parents’ house had given them enough financial padding that they felt confident in buying a small apartment on a street nearby Diagon Alley. It wasn’t big enough to have much of a housewarming party, but Asa’s parents had helped them move in, and when Lavinia had some spare time, she’d probably visit, too. Asa had balked at the idea of inviting their cousins over – Victoire was busy being the Minister, Dominique was grieving her friend’s death, and Louis was probably also busy, getting into all sorts of trouble or hanging out with his friends or something.
Despite their reservations, Asa had invited their cousins. They were still working out the planning details with Dominique, but Victoire had agreed to take a small amount of time out of her schedule for some rest and rejuvenation. Asa was waiting in the corner that served as a living room, which was more like a coffee table with chairs around it, but that was a technicality. She had put tea on the table, and some biscuits, but wasn’t sure if Victoire was actually going to sit down and eat or just take a cursory glance over the place in a congratulatory manner. It didn’t really matter to Asa, but they could hope for time with their cousin.

Victoire apparated just outside her cousins new apartment. She was ecstatic for Asa having gotten her own place and joining the staff at the orphanage. She had always been proud of Asa and looked up to her cousin highly. She entered the building and rang the bell at her cousins apartment. "Asa? It's me, Vic," she announced. It was always nice when she wasn't in business mode, even if it did give her anxiety. Heck, she was even wearing a t shirt, heans and a jean jacket if you can imagine Victoire Weasley in such a thing. She was in a good mood today. Why? Well, that was her own little secret.
She had always felt close to Asa, encouraging her cousins to do whatever Asa wanted with her life. Victoire tried to encourage that with all her cousins, but Asa was the main one who had listened and acted as though she appreciated the advice. At least, that's what it seemed to Victoire. Vic had many cousins whereas Asa and Liv only had a few, so Vic wanted to make that count.

Since Asa had been waiting for that moment, it didn’t take long for them to cross the distance from their impromptu living room to the door when the bell rang. The voice announcing who it was wasn’t necessary, since few people even knew that Asa had moved, let alone where to, but it was still a nice gesture. They swung open the door with a broad smile. “Bienvenue à chez Asa!” They greeted their cousin warmly. Asa took a moment to switch their brain back to English. Both cousins spoke French fluently, but Asa made a point of speaking English when she was at home, since she spoke French so much at work.
“You look well, Victoire.” Asa said, stepping out of their cousin’s way so she could enter and the door could be shut. It was true – Victoire did look exceptionally happy, though that could just be because she wasn’t wearing her normal business attire or doing things that befitted a Minister of Magic. “Tea? Biscuits?” Asa offered, gesturing towards the coffee table with said treats set upon it.

Victoire chuckled and smiled happily as Asa spoke to her in French. "Bonjour, c’est un bel appartement!" she returned, happily returning the French until they switched to English. Victoire shrugged at their compliment, entering the apartment as they shut the door. "As do you, Asa. I hope adulthood his treating you well so far?" she asked, glancing about the apartment. Vic nodded as they offered tea and biscuits, "merci," she said, having a seat near the table and pouring a cup of tea for herself. She looked back up at Asa, "how are things at the Orphanage? I'm so excited about you being there. That place needs much more attention then it gets," she said with a small sigh. There was probably something more she could do about that but what with the war on her hands... it was hard to juggle so many things at once. Thankfully, she had a team she could delegate to. Even if she hated delegating.

Asa smiled at their cousin’s compliment of their apartment; it was an auspicious beginning if there was such a thing. Asa was glad to hear that they looked as well as Victoire did – maybe things were finally on the upswing after such a horrible year. “Adulthood is wonderful, merci.” It was work, but it was wonderful work, and the fact that they got to help people wasn’t lost on Asa. “Something interesting happened at the orphanage the other day, actually.” Asa said, glancing at their cousin and pouring themself a cup of tea when Victoire was finished. “The Hogwarts counsellor came to pay me a visit, and one of the girls at the orphanage seemed…panicked, I guess would be the right word.” Asa finally decided. “She was panicking because she thought the counsellor was going to send her to an asylum or something.” Asa shook their head sadly. “These poor kids. The orphanage is understaffed and most of them don’t have much to their name.” Asa paused. “I know it’s not your fault, though, Victoire. It’s not the other Ministers’, either. It’s just difficult to know how much these children are struggling until they see them every day.” Asa didn't want their cousin thinking that they were blaming her for the orphanage's poor situation. It was just one of those places that would probably be eternally overlooked.

Vic smiled as they said that adulthood was wonderful. She was surprised. Asa had always been incredibly competent and Vic had no doubt that they would succeed. She leaned forward as they started to preface a story about something interesting happening at the orphanage. An asylum? Vic shook her head. Vic knew the situation wasn't pretty, but she was more focused on the fact that they even had an orphanage. When her father was a child they didn't have anything like that for wizards, at least not anything well known and used. They had to go to muggle orphanages which Vic thought was much worse.
"I understand," she said, "I think it's still such a new thing to the Ministry that it's often... overlooked, in a way," she didn't want to say that she had overlooked it, but she had thought of other things more often, of course. "I can try to find someone to put over it, maybe Sebastian or Royal," she was thinking to herself out loud at this point and she cleared her throat. "I hope you've been able to ease their minds a little, at least?"

Asa could understand why the orphanage wasn’t the first priority, but they were worried that if the scuffles with the unknown, malignant force continued on such a large scale that it would be needed more than ever. People were dying, and when people died, they left children behind. Children who had to go to an orphanage. Asa nodded along when Victoire said that she’d put someone on it; Royal and Sebastian, as far as they knew, were both competent people, and they were certain that Royal would be more inclined to be compassionate towards orphans after losing his own father. “I’m just a translator, Vic. A translator who also happens to do a bunch of other odd jobs.” They did whatever was necessary, really. It wasn’t like Asa was amazing with children – or people in general – but they tried their best. “You know I don’t really do the whole people thing well.” They weren’t a good orator, nor good at making friendships. Asa wasn’t like Victoire and her ability to make anyone like her. Hell, Asa could barely even get one person to like them, which was a shame, because there was only one person they really wanted to like them…

Vic nodded as Asa explained that they were just the translator who did other odd jobs as well. She couldn't help but smile as they said that they didn't do the whole 'people thing' well, which Vic knew of course. "I'm sure the kids like you. Though, often in that situation it's hard to really like someone you have to depend on," she guessed. Not just in the orphan situation, but in a lot of other situations too. Victoire was one of those people who didn't like to depend on anyone and whens he found it happening she often tried to dispel them from her day to day. She wouldn't push them away completely.... at least not every time.
Vic lifted her cup of tea and took a sip before moving on, "have you seen any friends since graduation? I know it's hard to not get too swept up in adult life right away," she had basically shut most of her friends out after school due to her big career plans... which was something she regretted. She hoped Asa wasn't going through that.

Asa gave Victoire a dubious glance when she said that the kids liked them. They didn’t think so, personally. Like Victoire said, it was difficult to like someone you had to depend on, especially when that dependency was shoved in your face every single day like it was when you lived in an orphanage. Asa got to go home every night; for the kids, Asa’s workplace was home. “Especially since a lot of these kids got there in the first place because they depended too much on somebody and then that person failed them.” A lot of the older kids who could remember their parents resented them for dying or for leaving, and Asa could understand why. It was difficult not to resent someone who was supposed to love you unconditionally and then up and left, even if the leaving wasn’t intentional.
“Not many.” Asa answered their cousin’s question somewhat sheepishly. “The only people I’ve really seen are my sister and parents, you, and Lucy.” Asa paused, unsure if further clarification on which Lucy was needed. “Your cousin, Lucy.” Victoire’s cousin Lucy who Asa had a huge crush on. No big deal.

Vic smiled at the look Asa gave her, tightening her lips to try and stop it from coming. She didn't hold it off for long, though, as they went on to speak about how a lot of the kids got there because they depending too much on someone who failed them. Vic sighed, nodding in agreement, "it is sad that anyone has to deal with that. Especially in a parent - child capacity," she was lucky that she didn't have trouble in that department. She had seen her fair share of leaving and done her fair share... not in that way, though. She'd never do that to a child. Hopefully not even on accident.
Vic frowned slightly as they answered her question. At the mention of Lucy, though, and the clarification, Vic raised an eyebrow. "You know Lucy? Well, I mean, you're friends with her?" Vic really didn't have much of a relationship with her cousin. She honestly didn't know that much about her except that she was a bit of a pain as a child.

Asa nodded along sadly when Victoire said that it was sad that anyone had to deal with abandonment, especially in a parent-child relationship. Their parents were both alive, obviously, but Asa had talked with their father about his brother dying when he was young, which had obviously left a mark. Any sort of abandonment did, even the small ones, like friends leaving. Asa tried to get their mind away from that idea; they’d rather not be sad when happiness was an option. And when Lucy came up, of course, it was easy to dispel any sort of sadness away. Lucy and Lavinia were the two people in Asa’s life who always managed to make them happy just by existing.
“Yes, I know Lucy.” Asa confirmed. They couldn’t exactly remember how they had met Lucy – perhaps it was through Dominique? – but the two most certainly knew each other. And were…friends. Right. “And yes, we’re friends.” Asa replied. “Though I suppose we do make a bit of an odd pair.” The loud Slytherin and the quiet Gryffindor; not the most expected of matches.

Vic nodded as they confirmed that they knew Lucy and that they were friends. She chuckled at their comment about the two being an odd pair, "Luc makes an odd pair with... lots of people," she said, shaking her head and taking a sip of her tea. "I as hoping her being in Slytherin would help us bond more but, alas, I haven't been bonding much with Slytherin the past few years. I'm glad you're a friend to her," she said with a genuine smile. She liked the idea of Asa being an example for Lucy, not that she had any control over what Lucy did with her life in any way- but it was nice to see that relationship.

Asa didn’t know why, but something twisted in their chest when Victoire mentioned Lucy being an odd pair with other people. They had thought they were the only one that Lucy was a pair with – other people, the Slytherin girl was in a group with, right? Asa pushed the thoughts aside. They were being stupid and jealous and it was pointless, because Lucy was just a friend. “I feel the same way with Gryffindor.” Asa commiserated. They had never really belonged in Gryffindor – they were too timid, too quiet, too non-confrontational. All of the Gryffindors in their year were so loud, and they had gotten lost in the noise. “Sometimes I think the house system is kind of useless, because you always get those people who don’t feel like they belong where they were put. Besides, who you are at eleven and who you are at seventeen are two vastly different monsters.” It was possible, Asa believed, to grow out of your house, and they had done just that.

Vic nodded, agreeing that the house system was a bit useless. "Exactly. I think just splitting dorms at random would be better. I mean, sometimes I feel like the house system creates unnecessary rivalries and... well, I'm not sure that the school board would be thrilled if I brought up my feelings on that," she chuckled, "but yeah, it's a bit odd to place us as children and expect us to grow to fit into the same house. Oh well," she shrugged, "I'm hoping the house differences are just getting lesser and lesser. While I was at school it didn't seem as bad as I've heard it was in the past, so that's nice," just then a patronus burst into the room, a platypus, and Vic frowned. "That's for me," she muttered. It didn't even give a message, just did a cute little flip that caused Vic to chuckle, "they need me back at the office. Hey, let's do this again. maybe if we do these tiny visits often enough it'll add up to a whole normal visit," she suggested, getting up to hug Asa before apparating out.

Asa nodded when Victoire said that the house system created unnecessary rivalries; Gryffindor and Slytherin were infamous for not getting along, though Asa definitely wasn’t a subscriber to that notion. Victoire was, after all, a Slytherin, and here Asa was, talking to her. Asa’s best friend was a Slytherin, which everyone seemed to think was strange, simply because of their houses. The house system, however, would likely never be abolished – it was one of those things that people kept around because ‘it’s the way it’s always been’. Asa agreed when Vic said that there was definitely a lessening of house differences. The rivalry was still very much alive, but there weren’t sneers or scowls in the hallways…most of the time.
The platypus that burst into the room was a surprise for Asa, but Victoire seemed to know what it meant. They smiled at their cousin when she said that she had to take her leave, agreeing quite readily that several mini-visits were in order. It was easier to keep caught up that way, with shorter visits more often. It was less likely they’d forget to say something important. After hugging their cousin goodbye, Asa watched as Victoire disappeared into space.
