The Monsters
walk among us
There they were. The doors leading into the Great Hall. The Great Hall at Hogwarts. One of the greatest magical schools in the world. Once he stepped through those doors with the crowd of other first-year students around him, he would start his education in magic, learning the ins and outs of how their world worked and what he should expect to see once he graduated and made it into the working world. Concepts like these meant nothing to an 11 year-old, especially one that had only attempted at using his wand a few times, always resulting in a blast of red and blue sparks. His older sister, Claire, three years his senior, was already waiting inside to see what house he and the rest of the new students would get sorted into. To say he was anxious was an understatement. Grey had been nervous from the minute his parents had ushered him onto the Hogwarts Express and into Claire’s capable hands.
The ride to Hogwarts had been interesting, intriguing even, and his older sister had introduced him to some of her friends, each of them showing him neat spells that he had yet to see at home. His parents had a strict no-spell policy in their house, not that he knew how to use magic yet, but that meant Claire had to practice in their basement, away from everyone else and the furniture, and even their mother and father decided against using magic for daily necessities. Grey had always found that strange, seeing as most magical families were fully ingrained with it every day; not the Slaters. Now that he had escaped the confines of home though, he could learn and practice the art to his heart’s content. It was surely going to be a thrilling year. After he was sorted into one of the four houses in front of a thousand other students that was.
Fidgeting slightly in the crowd of his peers, Grey slowly edged his way towards the back of the group, feeling much better standing away from the front, where he would surely be seen first by everyone in the Great Hall. As he walked backwards, he felt the heel of his foot catch onto the tail of his brand new robes, and the tension from it pulled him towards the marble floor. With a loud slap as his hands hit the ground, the other first-year students turned around sharply to look down at him. A few giggles emitted from inside the packed group, and Grey pushed himself back to his feet, his face beet-red and flushed with embarrassment. That was a great way to start off his first year at Hogwarts. Everyone was going to know his name in a few minutes too when he would have to climb up to the Sorting Hat. At least he hadn’t fallen in front of the entire school.
Brushing some of the dust that had gotten on his hands and the back of his robes, Grey quickly checked his pockets to make sure he had all of his belongings. Wand? Check. Watch? Check. Wallet? Negative. Where had it gone? He had thought it couldn’t get any worse than it had, but the feeling of sheer dread loomed over him. That was most of the money his parents had allotted him until Christmas break. If he told them that he had lost all of it (even using most of the money would have drawn their ire), they would probably disown him on the spot. He was positive that the small pouch had been on his person when he entered the school, remembering that Claire had told him to make sure he hadn’t left anything on the train, and triple-checking when he actually entered the castle. Surely he hadn’t been pickpocketed by one of the other students or a ghost already? He had to find the wallet quickly too, before the first-years were all ushered into the Great Hall for the sorting ceremony.
