Odd was certainly one way to describe this experience, Lysander thought. He nodded slowly at Alice’s comment. “Did I do something wrong?” He asked, voice barely above a whisper. As far as Sander knew, unicorns weren’t this friendly with any human, even females – they would interact if they were approached, but otherwise kept their distance. In all of the literature he had read, Sander had never once heard of a case where a unicorn was an active participant in the interaction, seeking affection and interaction with a human instead of just accepting it when a human approached them. Lysander decided, like any good Ravenclaw did, that he needed to test the situation, to be sure that it wasn’t just coincidence that the unicorn was continuing to stay near him and look at him. He took three careful, pointed steps backwards. The unicorn took three steps forwards. Lysander caught Alice’s eyes. If his eyes hadn’t been saucers before, they certainly were now. What had he done?

Alice stayed silent, looking back and forth between Sander and the unicorn. The look on her face was one of confusion and maybe even slight concern. Alice knew enough about unicorns to know that this behavior wasn't normal. She shook her head once, know that whatever was going on wasn't Sander's fault. When she then saw Lysander move back and the unicorn followed him, Alice's eyes widened. She met Lysander's eyes for a moment then glanced back at the unicorn as something seemed to dawn upon her. She looked back at Sander with intense eyes but tried to speak calmly.
"Lysander. Tell the unicorn to do something."

Tell the unicorn to do something? Lysander was going to repeat the sentence back to Alice, just in case he hadn't heard it right, but he knew that he had. Alice seemed to have an idea of what was going on here, though, so as ridiculous as the idea seemed, Lysander found himself thinking of what to ask the unicorn to do. "Uh...bow, please." Lysander asked, voice a normal speaking tone instead of the whisper he had been employing earlier. His voice clearly betrayed his uncertainty, but whether or not he was uncertain didn't seem to matter to the unicorn. It curled one of its forelegs up underneath it, bending its head towards the earth, and then looked back up at Lysander with warm brown eyes. "Thank you." Sander told it quietly before it resumed standing. The Ravenclaw turned to look at Alice. "You know what this means." It was a statement, not a question, and Lysander would really like to be clued in.

Alice's eyes lingered on Lysander for a moment before she looked back at the unicorn. She watched the creature as Lysander told it to bow. Alice had a feeling he sounded a little uncertain, but in the moment all she was concerned with was the interaction between he and the unicorn. After a moment, the unicorn sure enough bowed its head to the ground and Alice's eyes grew so wide. The Hufflepuff alum stood frozen longer than she had intended. It wasn't until a long moment after Lysander had turned to her and addressed her that Alice came to and found her words.
Alice had... a feeling. She wasn't sure how right said feeling was... but she was willing to bet anything it was somewhere close to the truth. Slowly, Alice turned herself to look at Lysander as well. "I have read things," she began, her breath trying to catch up to her thoughts. "I... I've read things about people having animal affinities." She glanced once more between Lysander and the unicorn. "The ability to... communicate with animals."

What Alice was saying sounded too good to be true, but Lysander knew that she would never intentionally lie to him, and everything that she said seemed to make sense. How else would the unicorn have known to bow when he asked it to? It wasn’t like unicorns on the American plains often interacted with humans, and they definitely didn’t interact with humans enough to learn tricks like bowing. Sander wasn’t even sure if the unicorns at Hogwarts, who were fairly tame, knew how to do anything other than not bite humans. The thought dawned on Sander slowly, but once the reality hit him, he had to bite his fist to keep from shouting at the top of his lungs. When he had calmed down enough, Lysander moved his fist from his mouth, beaming at Alice. “I can talk to unicorns? If I tried, do you think I could understand one, too?” A whole new door had just opened in front of Sander, one he didn’t even know existed before, and he wanted to know everything.

Truthfully, Alice had not read up too much on human to animal affinity, but it didn't take much to tell when it was occurring right before your eyes. Alice was still in shock from the sheer fact that she had actually seen it happen that she almost didn't see Lysander biting on his fist to hide his excitement. But when she caught him doing so, she smiled softly. This was a pretty big deal, especially for anmail lovers such as themselves.
"I don't know," Alice responded after a moment. She really had no idea. "I'd imagine some practice may be required..." She looked up toward the hill and thought she saw a tent rustling. She looked back at Lysander. "Are you going to tell your mom?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.
@lysander Now we can wrap it up.

Alice was smiling at him, and Lysander wasn’t sure he could not smile back if he tried. Alice said that he probably ought to practice, and Sander nodded. That would probably be easier when he was at home, and had access to unicorns (and other equines, if his affinity extended that far) who were tamer than the ones that they were with right now. “I…I suppose I have to, don’t I?” Lysander was of age, of course, but his mother would probably be just as excited about it as he was, and Lysander couldn’t deny her the kind of joy that he had right now. “We should probably get back, though.” They had been out for a while, and while it had been early morning when they had met on the hill, the sun was slowly creeping upwards, and the camp would soon come to life.

It was funny; ask Alice a few months ago and she never would have thought she would befriend Lysander or any Ravenclaw. Yet here she was, sharing this lovely experience with him and making lovely memories and new discoveries. "Hey, maybe we could go to a muggle stable and ride some horses or something?" She asked, going with her gut and asking Lysander to hang out like this again. It was surprisingly nice to be around him. "I agree," Alice nodded at Lysander saying they should get back. "I can't believe we just saw that." She shook her head to herself with a smile as she led the two of them back up the hill to their campsite.
