viola is a blunt person; she doesn’t beat around the bush for any reason, not even to protect people’s feelings. in her opinion, the truth is the truth, and nothing can change that. she has a great respect for people who tell the truth, and considers herself above lying except for in very select cases. as such viola is generally a stickler for the rules and won’t often be pulled into others’ scheming. she can be perceived as a kiss-up by people who only know of her by association because of her rule-following tendencies, but this notion is wholly incorrect, since she treats teachers and other authority figures with the same blunt words as she would anyone else. viola’s skills of observation are quite sharp – when she speaks her mind, she doesn’t want to be speaking falsely.
viola often finds herself exasperated by other people. she sees a lot of people who lie or are two-faced, and is constantly left wondering which side of them is real. people like that frustrate her, because sometimes they have no truth. as such, viola tends to avoid a lot of duplicitous people – which, when you get down to it, is most people. she’s accepted that it’s easier to observe something when you’re on the outside of it, so though she sometimes gets lonely, it’s easier for her lifestyle and her ideals to be alone. besides, it’s not exactly easy to keep friends when you won’t lie to keep their egos big or their secrets safe.

anne chase, 51, muggle actress
father:
orsino chase, 54, magical radio host
siblings:
pemberly chase, 15, durmstang student
pets:
none – she’s allergic to most animals
history:
viola was born to a struggling actress and a wildly successful radio host. from the beginning there was friction in her parents’ marriage, mostly centered on how her mother could never seem to get her big break and her father was left supporting their growing family almost entirely on his own. viola wasn’t really aware of how tense it was – no child really is – but she wasn’t shocked when her parents split when her little sister was two years old, either. it was better that way, in an entirely nonironic fashion. her mother could spend all the time in the world looking for roles, since her father was granted custody of both girls almost entirely based on the fact that he actually had an income.
growing up, viola didn’t see her mother much. the woman wasn’t exactly flighty – she just forgot how little she stopped by. since both viola and her little sister were magical, there was additional element of cultural disconnect; magic was an important part of their lives, and they didn’t know how to talk with their muggle mother about anything other than music and musicals. part of why viola began learning muggle pop culture was so that she could have something to talk with her mother about, but that still didn’t help them in becoming close to each other – she just wasn’t around enough for a meaningful rapport to be built.
going to durmstang was a relief for viola, because she had an excuse not to limp through awkward confrontations with her mother. she soon found out that it wasn’t as easy as she expected; for one thing, her father’s radio show was immensely popular, and she was pegged as his daughter early on in her school experience. other kids seemed to want to be her friend just for the connections she had, and that didn’t sit well with her. another problem with her father’s popularity was that he was also well known for being on the ore liberal end of magical issues, especially for a magical district that was still more conservative and strict. some of viola’s classmates (and teachers) were wary of her spreading “liberal propaganda” and thus avoided her.
other than the period of adjustment, though, viola’s school experience was fine. it wasn’t particularly spectacular, but she did well enough in her classes. once she realized that it was easier for her to be on the outskirts of things, life got even better. she was happier and more at ease, though she still felt like something was missing. the missing part came in her fourth year at school, when she joined the school’s newspaper. she devoured the chance to be able to investigate and tell the truth, and that became her new passion. despite that, though, viola knew that she could never be a newspaper reporter; she wasn’t nice enough to people to be able to finagle answers out of them and her writing style was too dense and straightforward for most readers. she began to wonder what job she would be good at, but didn’t get many answers.
when the triwizard tournament came into the picture, viola was excited. when she was picked to be taken to hogwarts, she wasn’t even that focused on winning the tournament, though that would definitely be a bonus. she wanted to immerse herself in the new ideas, especially since hogwarts was definitely more liberal than durmstang – the fact that they were so upset about the murders based on blood purity was part of that. at first viola’s father tried to tell her not to go, to keep safe, but her excitement for the tournament eventually outweighed his worries, though her little sister was still not thrilled with viola’s decision. she didn’t care; she was going to a strange land with a strange language and strange happenings, and she was excited to take it all in.
