So, Viola had talked with Elias Greyback, and somehow the whiny werewolf managed to think that he had offended her. In truth, she hadn't been offended by a single word he said - he was an airhead who was too self-absorbed to realize that not everyone hated him because he happened to be a lycanthrope. Of course, messing with Elias normally meant messing with his cousin Maria, too. If Viola was being frank - and of course she was, she didn't know how to sugarcoat anything - Maria was a lot scarier than Elias. Viola was lucky that she hadn't gotten the side of Veela when she had dealt with the werewolf. That would have been a little overwhelming. Still, if Elias had said anything to his cousin, then Viola could be in massive trouble. Especially if Elias had managed to spin one of his 'poor me' tales that he was so fond of.
The Durmstang girl had decided to get a head start and approach her classmate first. It was easier that way. She had followed Maria outside after lunch had finished, and Viola was going to waste no time in getting straight to the point. "Flamethrower!" Viola said casually, sauntering up to the other girl. "Your cousin said anything about our discussion the other day?"

Maria knew who Viola was. Not that well, but she knew her fellow seventh year. Just like Elias knew most the people in their year. But for a very different reason. Elias knew them because he was usually being harassed and tormented. Ad her? Well, she was usually retaliating. Typically with fire. Elias had a reputation for being an easy target, and Maria had a reputation for making you an easy target. An interesting combination, but it worked for them. Well... That and Maria was known for flirting and sleeping with anyone willing. (As long as said person hadn't ticked her off in the last 24 hours.)
Maria had just plopped down on one of the benches, stretching out her long legs and hiking up her skirt a bit to soak up some of the sun when she heard the word 'flamethrower' and knew they meant her. Running her fingers through her perfectly curly hair, she tilted her head and searched the grounds with her eyes for the search. Only Viola was close enough to have said it. It didn't take long for the girl to prove Maria right. She approached, speaking once more. Maria brushed her hair off of her shoulders then, and laid back on the bench, eyes closed. Obviously she felt absolutely no threat from her fellow Durmstrang student. "Can't say he has. Why? Should I know about your 'conversation' with Elias?" She opened one eye, eyeing the girl warily. After a moment she grinned and closed the eye. She wasn't concerned. Elias had been acting normal. If Viola had done something that bad, she'd know it by Elias's behavior. "Hello, Viola."

One of the things that Viola liked about Flamethrower was that, unlike everyone else, she could be persuaded to cut the bull and actually get to the purpose of their conversation. When Viola asked the question, she didn’t get the small talk that so many people seemed to be fond of, but Viola despised. “I was just wondering.” Viola said with a shrug, sitting on the arm of the bench that Maria was currently reclining on. “You see, I wanted to talk to him about being a werewolf – more on that later, actually, I totally met his little sister – and just have a normal conversation with him, but he didn’t seem to be having it.” Viola looked over at Maria, but she appeared pretty at ease, with her eyes closed and a serene look on her face. “Is his only topic of conversation how much the world hates him?” She asked. It wasn’t that Viola didn’t thank that Elias hadn’t been dealt a bad hand in life – he certainly did have a lot to deal with – but she was certain that he also ignored a lot of the good things that happened to him because he was so busy focusing on the bad. “Because, I swear, I was being nice,” Well, as nice as Viola could be – she still wasn’t going to pull punches when it came to talking to people, even to people she liked, “And all he talked about was how no one likes him or ever wants to talk to him.” Even as she had been talking to him! Was he stupid or something? “I mean, I guess if he wasn’t upset by it this is what always happens.” Viola said with a shrug. She should have known that there was a reason why Elias had no friends other than his cousin. “He seems really great at self-sabotage.” Viola commented. You could learn a lot about a person from watching them, from talking to them, and Viola was pretty sure that she already had Elias Greyback figured out. Now she just needed her suspicions to be confirmed.

"Hm." Was all Maria offered as way of acknowledging Viola's response of 'just wondering'. Maria wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. But, as previously mentioned, if Elias hadn't mentioned it, or acted strange, she wasn't worried. Though, as Viola continued, Maria opened that eye once more, staring at the girl. She wasn't that far, the girl sitting on the arm right by her feet. That word 'sister' had struck a nerve in Maria. Sister. To say Maria wasn't fond of this whole 'Greyback sibling' thing was an understatement. She hated it. She felt like that girl, Jamie, was trying to make her cousin join their little sibling club. As if their fatherhood was something to be proud of. Well, news flash, barbie. Elias wasn't proud of his father. Fenrir Greyback raped her aunt. And if that wasn't bad enough, he had to come back years later to permanently mark Elias as 'his', turning him into a werewolf. So yeah, you could say Maria had a... slight grudge against Fenrir Greyback. For some reason that grudge was carrying over to Elias's annoyingly blonde half sister. "Being blood related doesn't make her his sister." She snapped back, venom in her voice and daring Viola to say that word again.
While Viola had her... faults, there was always one thing you could count on. Brutal honesty. If Viola said she was being nice, then she was. At least her definition of it. Which was probably similar to Maria's definition. She closed her eyes once more, and stretched her arms up over her head because letting them drape across her chest. Still just as relaxed as before. That is, until Viola started to focus a little to much on Elias. Both of Maria's eyes opened, and focused intently on the other girl. You could practically feel the slightest hint of hostility building. Not bad yet, just the smallest of warnings. Like a dog baring it's teeth at an intruder. Only this dog had more then just teeth to be afraid of. "I think you should be more worried about your self-sabotage." She slowly stated, pausing only a moment. "My cousin's personality isn't your concern."

Viola raised her eyebrow when Maria snapped about sharing blood not making people siblings. Well, if that was the logic the half-Veela was going by, then she and Elias weren’t cousins, either. Viola was smart enough not to say that, though – she was blunt, but she also preferred not to be scorched. Medium rare was not a good look on her; Viola preferred all of her internal meat to remain perfectly raw, thanks. She put her hands up, palms out, in a gesture of surrender. “Sorry, didn’t mean to offend.” She said smoothly. Maria was one of the only people that Viola ever apologized to, probably because she was the only one who could set her on fire with barely more than a thought. If everyone had that power, Viola would probably have become a lot more careful about holding her tongue. Either that, or she would have gotten used to going to the burn unit. Probably the latter.
Maria didn’t seem to be that receptive to what Viola was saying. Of course she was overprotective of her cousin – he had probably sold her on his whole ‘poor me’ narrative. At the mention of Viola herself committing self-sabotage, she blinked. “If there’s one thing I know, Maria, it’s that I’m being the most genuine self that I can be.” She answered. There was no self-sabotage here. “Everything that’s happened in my life has happened because I chose it, or because I let it. I’m one of those people who’s better off alone.” Viola blinked again, hoping that her next comment would be seen as concerned instead of overbearing. “Your cousin doesn’t seem like one of those people at all, though, and I just wanted to help.” What was the point in seeing everything about everyone if you couldn’t help make their lives better? Viola didn’t want to be the one with all the answers who never thought it prudent to share those answers. She didn’t often intervene, but she felt she had an obligation to, especially since Maria was giving her the third degree (not literally…yet) about the whole conversation. “I know sometimes it’s hard to believe, but there is a heart beneath the stone cold bitch you see before you.” Stone cold Viola was, but bitch she wasn’t. She was just honest. If Maria couldn’t handle it…well, Viola had heard that Hogwarts had an excellent hospital wing.

Hm. So it looks like Viola knew when to back off. Maria's gaze softened as Viola made that gesture of surrender and apologized. That slight hostility seemed to disappear, like a spark that had been blown out. Just that fast too. It wasn't that she thought blood didn't make you related.... But she felt it didn't give them a... right to him. That just being blood related gave them a claim on Elias. He didn't even know them! He was her family. They knew each other. Trusted each other. Them? They were strangers, trying to make something out of nothing. "No offense taken." She finally retorted, accepting the apology.
Maria sat up a little, propping herself back on her elbow so she could get a better look at Viola and not just stare down her nose at the girl. Viola was good at defusing the situation. Nothing in her next comments fanned the flames that were Maria's temper. Her head tilted a little, some of her dark curls falling into her face as she eyed the girl for a moment, as if judging the sincerity to her words. Slowly she started to grin. She had to give Viola some props. "So this conversation now. Are you choosing it, or letting it happen?" She asked curiously. Maria and Viola had never really spoken much. But in these few minutes she'd learned more about the girl then she'd learned in six years. Now that she'd had just a little taste of Viola's personality? Well... she was curious. Insatiably curious. "Then give me a chance to figure out just what you are, and how deep that heart is. I've heard Hogwarts has these 'trips' to the village. Next trip. Go out with me." The way she said it.... It almost wasn't even a question.

Viola had fully expected to become one of Maria’s burn victims, but apparently today wasn’t her lucky day. Or was – it all depended on how you looked at it. When Maria asked if Viola was choosing the conversation or letting it happen, she grinned. “I chose it, of course. Why the hell else would I have walked up to you?” She said with a shrug. Now that Maria was sitting up, it was easier to make eye contact with her, which was good. Viola liked getting a good read on people, and that was impossible without eye contact. She didn’t like keeping it up for too long, though – hence why she had turned away from Elias. Viola could, generally, read people quicker than they could read her, so breaking off eye contact after she had gotten a good feel for them ensured that her own secrets stayed safe. “In case you were wondering, I let the conversation with your cousin happen to me. He kept smiling, which was kind of weird. If I wasn’t worried about you setting me on fire I’d tell you to tell him not to smile at random people unless he intends to talk to them.” Viola had intended to give the advice despite her preface – she found that sometimes reminding people of their own powers actually made them less likely to use them. People were weird like that.
“I doubt you’ll be able to figure me out in just one day.” Viola said, trying her best not to smile. Most people still hadn't figured her out after knowing her for six years. “So, how about we meet up here, same time tomorrow, and you can see if you can figure anything out before we go to the village, hm?” There. This way, Maria still got what she wanted, but she wasn’t the only one with power. Besides, Viola wasn’t into anything except for monogamy in a relationship, and forcing Maria to meet her closer to their current meeting limited the amount of time she had to find someone else. Viola knew of Maria’s…looseness, so to speak, and while that didn’t dim her interest, it certainly posed some interesting challenges.

Maria's grin turned into a sly smirk. "I'd hope my good looks and amazing personality might have played at least a small role in your decision." Maria teased, though she was also quite serious. No one with Veela blood was ugly, it was genetically impossible. And Maria? She was half. Which meant she had a fair amount of Veela blood coursing through her veins. She knew she was pretty, and she was extremely vain about it. Not only that, she was a perfectionist when it came to her appearance, never going anywhere unless she'd done her hair and makeup. When Viola commented about Elias' smiling, Maria shrugged as best she could in her current position. "He's a smiler. Nothing wrong with that." He was a much more carefree, and sweet individual then herself. It was one of the reasons she had such a strong desire to protect him, because he was too nice to do it himself. The world would crush him if someone wasn't there to stop it.
That grin was back though as Viola said she doubted Maria could figure her out in one day. Part of her wanted to come up with some snide remark of how surprised she'd be if she gave Maria a chance. But she did know that Viola's comment was giving Maria that chance. She wasn't expecting Viola to come back with her own offer. Maria's eyebrows raised, her eyes going slightly wider with surprise. Obviously Maria wasn't used to counter offers. Of course, the very idea that she was offered a counter was enough to fully captivate her interest. It was something new. And new was always fun. Maria sat up completely, her gaze never leaving Viola as she contemplated in silence. Finally she made a decision. "You've got yourself a deal."

Viola rolled her eyes at Maria’s teasing about her good looks and personality. “Yes, your Veela Charm and the chance that I might be burnt to a cinder with only a moment’s notice were totally reasons I decided to talk to you.” She said, rolling her eyes for a second time. If anything, they were reasons not to talk to Maria – most people didn’t risk the whole burn thing. Still, if Maria wanted to see her tomorrow, chances were the half-Veela wasn’t going to burn her. It wasn’t a good strategy for making friends, or for capturing lovers – Viola didn’t know why she hadn’t seen that earlier. When it came to Elias, though, the Durmstang girl sighed. “Yeah, and I used to be a scowler, until people started reporting me to the headmaster because they were worried I was going to murder them in their sleep.” Viola paused, and then shook her head. “I know it sucks, Flamethrower, but even if we can’t change the world, it’s sure as hell is going to change us. For me, it meant I couldn’t scowl anymore. For Elias, it might mean that he has to smile a little less.” She shrugged. It was sad, but it was true. You could only resist so much when it came to societal pressure. It was one of those things that Viola said she let happen to her, but never would have chosen herself.
Maria accepted her counteroffer, and Viola smiled. “Great.” With that, she stood up from her position on the arm of the bench, lifting an arm in farewell to Maria. “I’m going to give you some time to ponder the enigma that is Viola Chase before tomorrow.” She said with a smile. If Viola had hair, she would have flipped it over her shoulder as she walked away. Even without locks of the sufficient length, though, Viola was sure that she made a rather unforgettable (and extremely abrupt) exit as she walked away.

"Veela charm is a good reason. Besides. You knew the risk of being burned before you even came over." Maria was grinning widely, and leaned forward just a bit. "But you have to admit, life's always more fun when there's a little danger to it." She'd lowered her voice to a.... well dangerous level. She was taunting Viola. It was true though. Even knowing Maria's reputation, Viola had approached her. Without worry or concern for her own safety. She'd only back pedaled once, when she'd realized Maria was getting ticked. And, amazingly, she'd been successful, defusing the situation before Maria lashed out. "Really? Maybe they just wanted to see that charming smile of yours. But scowling can be pretty cute sometimes too. Maybe I'll get the chance to see it sometime." Well, that was one way to completely ignore the idea of telling her cousin to stop smiling so much.
As Viola made her exit, Maria swung her legs off the bench, finally sitting normally. She smiled back as she ran her fingers through the ends of her hair. "Until then." She offered as a farewell, silently watching Viola's exit. Well. Maybe Hogwarts wouldn't be as boring as Maria first thought.
