Anna was annoyed. School was starting and she was already struggling with her least favorite subject- potions. She wished she didn't have such a hard time with it, but she did. Still, she got a decent OWL and was able to take the NEWT classes on it, which was good because she was leaning towards wanting to be an auror when she left school. So she needed that class. That didn't mean that it was easy for her though. Potions never was. She was sitting outside, beside the Black Lake as she tried to study her potions book. Anna knew herself pretty well and so she was trying to underline parts of the potion that she would likely forget if she didn't have them underlined. She tended to forget certain small details when it came to making potions. Therein lay her problem with the subject. Still, reading through potions and underlining specific parts was not her idea of a good time. There were other things she'd rather be doing right now, but she couldn't. Not without feeling guilty. Finally giving up on the potion she was supposed to be studying, she closed the book and tossed it away rather moodily. Potions, ugh. What a waste of a beautiful day. She turned and looked across the lake, trying to think of something other than potions. The only other thing that came to mind was the tournament, which wasn't encouraging. She was excited to get a chance to participate, but also nervous and she had a feeling that these particular nerves wouldn't go away until she knew who the Hogwarts Champion was going to be. She closed her eyes, wishing for something to distract her from her thoughts. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us The gorgeous days never ceased to amaze the Gryffindor. Grey would swear on his life that there was some kind of enchantment cast around the entirety of Hogwarts to make nice days like this happen more often. Looking at the typical Scottish climate, Hogwarts was vastly different. He wasn’t complaining though. Taking advantage of great days like this was what Grey was all about. He tried to spend that majority of his day outside regardless, but today was one of those rare exceptions where it was from dawn until dusk. Not literally dawn, but when it seemed appropriate to be wandering on the grounds without alerting every Auror within a kilometer of him. So far he had wandered along the Quidditch pitch to see if anyone was practicing. A few of the Durmstrang students were messing around, but they had immediately stopped once they spotted Grey watching them. They were pretty touchy about who got to see their skills. He understood, there was no telling who was going to be the champions for each school, so everyone was very careful showing what they were all about. Even Grey had backed off from practicing out in the open and he had avoided the dueling club since the term started; it had become overrun with the other schools’ students checking out the competition. After being shooed away by the Durmstrangs, or more glared at with stony eyes until he left, Grey had spent the rest of his day walking along the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Typically he tried to avoid that area, but he had been feeling pretty brave today. Plus he was positive that the Durmstrangs were still watching him as he walked away. They didn’t seem to like the forest that much, so psyching them out by taking a nice stroll along the wooded boundaries was entertaining. If he was the Hogwarts champion, he’d give them a show alright. But that was yet to be determined. He had a million other things on his mind now, things that were more important than being the champion. If he was chosen there was a good chance he’d do a poor job at it. Still, it was a once in a lifetime chance, so he wouldn’t be completely against being chosen, just a bad pick by the goblet. Grey had eventually made his way to the Black Lake somehow. He wasn’t a fan of it, stories of the creatures in it deterred him as much as the forest did. Magical creatures didn’t play by the rules that humans did. As he rounded the lake, he passed a few small groups of students scattered along the banks of the lake, some studying, others talking. That was the other problem with the lake; it was a really popular place to sit outside. Why would anyone want to be sitting right next to where a giant squid lived? That was absurd. Grey still found himself there from time to time, and today was no exception. Hands shoved in his jacket pockets, Grey managed to make it pretty far away from most of the groups. Eventually he was on his own, save for one person sitting near the water. It wasn’t hard to tell that it was Weasley, based on the red hair. The question was which one was it? There seemed to be so many of them, that Grey could hardly keep track sometimes. As he got closer, he saw the girl toss a book off to the side. That seemed a little drastic to him, but he could sympathize with not wanting to read on such a nice day. Walking up, he bent over and picked up the book. “Potions, eh? I think I need to do this too…”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Anna jumped when she heard someone talking behind her. She turned around quickly and looked back, smiling when she saw that it was Grey. She'd never been particularly close with him, but they were in the same year and she knew who he was. He tended to keep to himself mostly. She laughed when his words registered in her mind. "What, you need to study potions or throw the book away?" She raised an eyebrow teasingly. She knew most people were better than she was when it came to Potions so she had no problem laughing at her abysmal ability. Still, she tried hard and that's what mattered, right? "So what are you doing over here?" She asked with a smile. "Most people don't come to this side of the Lake ..."grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us The last thing Grey had intended was to scare Anna, but apparently he had when he started talking to her, watching her jump a little as he finished. Whoops. He had a bad habit of creeping up on people sometimes without even realizing it. Having a somewhat quiet and relaxed nature was good for being stealthy. He laughed as she asked him what he had to do with the potions book. “Well…I was going to actually do the homework, unlike someone I know, but throwing it away seems more like something I would do.” For whatever reason, Potions wasn’t the strong suit of the seventh year Gryffindors, Grey had found that out over the last few years. There were a few exceptions of course, but even those like him in the NEWT course had a really tough time. Most would just chalk it up to taking the more difficult class, but he knew it was more than that. Someday he’d have to take a tally of how many of the Gryffindors were actually semi-decent at it. Grey pondered her next question for a little bit. What was he doing again? He was pretty sure he was just wandering around like usual, sucking in the sun’s rays on his daily walk around the grounds. He had never thought he needed a reason to do that before. Maybe it was all so he could think about everything, without the castle and other students looming over him. That seemed like too complicated of an answer to give though. “Just enjoying the day. I try to get outside as much as possible around now, before the weather gets ugly.” As much as he enjoyed the winter and snow, freezing winds and pathways that weren’t actively cleared out in the winter months were not the best ways to enjoy the great outdoors. During the winter, a lot of his outside time was fixated on Hogsmeade, since there wasn’t much else to do on the grounds. Grey looked around at the lake as Anna mentioned that he was on a different side of the lake than usual. “Huh…didn’t even notice that. I start thinking when I’m wandering around and I usually end up in some pretty weird places.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Anna started to laugh when Grey did. She didn't expect anyone to find her all the way out here, but running into him was nice. She hadn't really seen Grey very much at all this year. Well, she saw him, but they didn't have a chance to talk until now. Still, before they got down to talking, she needed to defend her honor. Or something like that. "Hey! I was working on the homework for ..." she tried to estimate how long she'd been at it before giving up. "For a long time, but you know what? Every once in a while throwing away the dang book is good for morale. I don't think I could study it any longer right now even if I wanted to," Anna looked over at the book and glared. Why was potions so hard? "I'm glad I'm not the only one that wants to give it a toss every now and then."She nodded when Grey mentioned enjoying the weather before it got cold. "I know. I was studying up in the library, looking out the window when I realized it wasn't going to stay nice like this for long. So I decided to move my studies out into the fresh air,"She looked up at him and then patted the grass next to where she was sitting, "Well since you're already all the way out here, if you're not busy, why don't you join me for a bit?" Anna knew grey was probably pretty busy and didn't have time to just sit down and talk with her, but he was wandering the grounds. That meant he had a bit of free time, right? And even if it didn't, she was sure that he needed a distraction from his thoughts, just like she needed a distraction from hers. "So what do you think about the Tournament?" That was a safe topic of conversation, right? Almost the whole school spoke of nothing else since the announcement on their night back, but Anna knew that lots of people had different opinions about it. Maybe Grey's would surprise her. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us It was funny listening to Anna try and defend herself about tossing the book to the side. Grey knew all too well how difficult some of the potions assignments were, and he had a feeling that the one they were talking about fell somewhere into that category. “Not doing work is my personal philosophy. I still wonder how I managed to get into NEWT level classes.” Sure he had done pretty well the past few years, but Potions was far from being one of his better classes, and it was extremely selective most of the time. Still, he and others just as bad as him managed to make it into the class and continue dragging everyone down. Grey felt like it was his responsibility to take most of the heat from the professor so everyone else could scrape by. He was confident in his other skills and classes that they’d get him where he needed to be, so Potions was more or less a lost cause at this point. “Tossing books around every now and then is more like once or twice a day for me,” Grey said laughing. “But here I am, still in Hogwarts taking high level courses and just barely pissing the professors off.”Grey could sympathize with Anna about studying inside. Sometimes it was inevitable, especially if it was too cold out or raining, which happened more often than not. Being stuck in the castle was terrible and they were really only given the option to escape all of it for Hogsmeade trips, and even then, most people ended up going in the shops and pubs to get out of the weather. Grey thought that defeated the purpose of being able to leave campus. “I’ve found that the library is really only good for sleeping in,” he said, contemplating whether or not that would be a good place to shack up later on. Then again, most places were relatively easy for him to fall asleep in, so it was more the comfort of the big fluffy chairs they had there. He watched as Anna patted the ground and asked him if wanted to stay for a while. There was no opposition on his end, and he took a seat next to her, listening as she asked him what he thought about the Triwizard tournament. “That’s a tough one,” he started. “I entered, obviously because it’s a once in a lifetime event, but I’m not too sure what I would compete for. A lot of people seem to be doing it for honor, glory, their school…all that jazz.” He placed Anna’s potions book, which he was still holding on to, on the ground between them, still thinking about the tournament. “It’s too late to back out now though! Can’t walk up to the goblet and ask it to spit my submission back out to me. I’m sure I had a pretty good reason for entering in the first place, so I just need to remember what that was, or find a new one.” The tournament had taken a back seat with everything else that had been going on in his life. Getting picked as the Hogwarts champion, while thrilling, might not be the best time for that to happen, unless he managed to fix everything before then. “What about you? Decide to enter?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Anna laughed when Grey said that not doing work was his personal philosophy. "I wish I could use that philosophy for myself, especially when it comes to potions, but my conscience gets to me. That and the fact that I'm trying to qualify to be an auror ..." she trailed off, not sure what else to say about that. "No, you did well enough to get into the class, so you can't be too bad. I mean, at least not too much worse than I am," Anna teased, laughing with him at his comment about annoying the professors. From Anna's experience Grey could be pretty funny when he wanted to be and apparently this was one of those times. She laughed, "I agree, but sometimes I have to do more than just sleep in there. Especially during the winter, where there's basically nowhere else to study."She listened quietly as he explained his thoughts about the Triwizard Tournament. He was being a little confusing about it, but she thought she understood. It seemed like he was just nervous about entering, like she was. Entering was exciting and thrilling, but now that she had time to think over it, she was nervous that she'd made the wrong decision. What if she was chosen and ended up being a terrible champion? Not that she was going to tell Grey about her worries. She grinned at him, "I did!" She laughed for a second, "I mean, I don't really have a reason like some of the ones you were listing. I just think that if I didn't at least put my name in the Goblet, I'd regret it. Now that I put my name in, if I'm not chosen, I did my part. If I am chosen ... well then I'll just have to ask a bunch of people to support me in it." She shrugged, "I really wish it was Halloween already. I want to know who the Champion will be."grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us Grey’s eyes lit up as Anna mentioned that she was going to attempt the auror gig following graduation as well. “You too?” Was all he could manage out at first. He hadn’t really talked to too many other people about the process of becoming an auror other than Finn and Rei, and that was because they were already in the middle of the training. It was somewhat relaxing to know that there was somebody else out there that was almost in the same situation as he was; struggling in potions and trying to become an auror. He wondered how common that could be. “I’d say I’m probably bottom of the class, so no need to worry. I have my moments of brilliance here and there, but never in potions.” Anna was right though, he had to be pretty decent at potions to be able to get into the NEWT level course. That wasn’t an easy feat to pull off. “We’ll manage though, and end up as aurors one day.” Amongst all the things happening in his life, that was the one goal that continued to shine through. Grey had a feeling that aiming to be an auror was what he was meant to do, and that completing that dream would make everything better for him. He wasn’t sure why that was exactly, but it seemed like having a goal to look forward to was the best way to improve himself. So far it had worked. It was always interesting to hear other student’s reasons for entering the tournament. How he had explained it to Anna just a few moments ago was the typical response he had received when he inquiring about it. The rest turned out similar to his and Anna’s; they didn’t really know or did it just because it was a once in a lifetime chance. Grey still hadn’t figured out if that was a good enough reason to enter, or if a reason was even necessary to be able to become the champion. For all he knew, the higher power that dictated which students from each school became champions could be completely random. The way the headmaster had made it sound though, there seemed to be specific parameters that the champions needed to have in order to be selected. Whichever it was, Grey would be completely content with either being picked or becoming a spectator. “I’m kind of anxious now too. The more I hear people talking about it, the more I want to know.” It seemed like everyone from all three schools was starting to get that way. Almost a month had passed already, and they still had to wait until the end of October to find out who would be representing the three schools. “I feel bad for the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students that aren’t picked though. They’re sacrificing their final year of school to try and become champions. And only one of them will be able to do that. Seems like a lost cause for most of them.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Anna's jaw dropped open and she turned to stare at Grey a little. "Wait. You want to be an auror? I didn't know that! How have we never talked about this before?" She exclaimed, suddenly excited. She wasn't the only one! And apparently not the only one who wanted to be an auror that was bad at potions too. She laughed a little, "Moments of brilliance are almost impossible to have in potions, and maybe we should just agree that we're both pretty bad at potions, but not bad enough to keep us out of it!" Surprisingly, Anna was really relieved to know she wasn't alone in her goals. She was almost completely decided that she wanted to be an auror now, so she was dedicating herself more to her studies. Potions in particular. The others were never too much of a problem for her. "Yes we will," she agreed when Grey said they'd make it and be aurors eventually. She grinned, "Good. I'm glad I'm not the only one that's nervous about entering. Everyone else I talk to seems so excited about it all the time. I think I'll be fine, once we finally get to know who is chosen. Then I can relax or start to prepare. Not knowing what to do is just torture." She nodded when he mentioned the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students, her mind instantly pulling up the image of the cute one from the other day. Oscar. She really didn't know what to think of him. They yelled at each other once and sort of gotten along once. If she was closer to Grey, she might ask him what that meant, but she wasn't. "I don't know. I mean, isn't the point of the tournament to make friends? If they only left the person who was chosen champion, we wouldn't be able to do that. And their champion would get lonely." Then a thought popped into her head and she let it out, "I wonder if they have to study classes somehow this year or if they just get out of school." She shrugged, not knowing the answer or how to get it. It wasn't like she was really close with any of the foreign students. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us He was slightly embarrassed that he had never said anything about wanting to be an auror before. Other than briefly mentioning it to Rai and Finn over the summer, he was pretty sure only a few of the Gryffindors knew at this point. It wasn’t like it was a secret or anything, more that he was keeping it away from others until he was absolutely certain that was where he wanted to go after graduating. Now that Anna knew, as well as a few others, it seemed like he had pretty much confirmed that becoming an auror was his intentions. It was a good job anyways, so there wasn’t much he had to worry about. “I’ve been kind of keeping it myself. I wasn’t really sure if that was what I wanted until this year anyways.” The other choice was continuing with the newspaper job, moving towards the Daily Prophet or another wizarding paper. Grey wasn’t too keen falling in with a lot of that crowd, since they were often seen as sneaky, conniving people. That wasn’t him in any sense. “We’re pretty much guaranteed a spot with the training program regardless how potions turns out this year anyways. Heard from a source that they’re really strapped for trainees, so they’ll look the other way on a class or two.” Having Finn and Rai on his side really helped ease his mind when it came to being accepted into the program, so giving that information to Anna wouldn’t hurt anyone. “You didn’t hear that from me though.”Back to the tournament now. There were a lot of things Grey still wanted to know about it, or his reasoning for entering, but none of that really mattered until the actual selection, just like Anna had said. If he wasn’t picked, then that was it, back to normal life like usual. If he was selected, then he would have to worry about all of it again. There was no escaping the Goblet apparently. “I agree. I don’t think anyone really needed that much time to decide anyways. If they didn’t enter on impulse right away, everyone was pretty much ready to go in the first week.” Anna was right, waiting was torture. Once October hit, people would be losing their minds for the last thirty days. Paying attention in class was going to be a nightmare. “I guess they still have to cheer on their champions, but it just seems like a waste if they’re only here to be the champion. Obviously those that want to make connections already are, but I’m sure there’s a few that only want to compete.” Grey wandered about the class thing too. They still had to take them, but it seemed like the other schools didn’t have to. “No clue. I’m sure there’s a few things they probably work on. I half thought that they would be taking classes with us. Guess that isn’t happening though.”grey xavier slater & @annelise 490 Holdin' It Down For The Underground by A Day To Remember MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Anna shrugged when Grey mentioned keeping his plans of being an auror to himself. "Oh don't worry about it. I've been debating between a few things too, so I haven't told anyone yet either." She smiled when he told her that they were probably guaranteed a spot in the program. "Well that's a relief. I've been studying myself crazy for that stupid class." She chuckled a little, "Thus, me throwing the book." She laughed again, "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. I'll just let that information help me calm myself down a little bit.""Right?! I heard they used to take just one day. Oh well, I guess they know something that we don't," she grumbled. Anna wasn't very patient and waiting for this tournament to start was like waiting for school to start over the summer. At least she had classes and things to distract her, but even so, it didn't distract her for long. She nodded, "Yeah, I don't think I'd really want to stay if I wasn't chosen. Unless it was a close friend or something. It would kind of feel like rubbing in what I don't have. At least with the Tournament being here at school, I'm still surrounded by my friends and distracted by class."grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us It was almost comical how similar their situations were when it came down to deciding on whether or not to become aurors. The decision was a hard one to make. The training program was no joke, and it was a law enforcement position. There were hundreds of things to take into account with it, and there was always that subtle thought that there could be a point in time one day where it’s kill or be killed. Aurors sole purpose was to keep the public safe and sometimes that meant dealing with some unsightly characters that would rather go down in a blaze of glory than peacefully hand their wand over and be nice. It had taken Grey a long time to think that part over. He was mostly hesitant about working with others and possibly screwing up, causing them to get hurt, or worse. Having Finn and Rai there, and now possibly Anna too, was a relief for him. He would have people that he could trust with his life and vice-versa. It was silly to say it was because they were all Gryffindors, but that was exactly the reason. They had all grown up at school together, the only bonds that were stronger than that were bound in blood. He chuckled at the comment about Potions. It was a struggle, he knew. “I could see loving Potions if you wanted to advance in that career, but the only use it has for us is to know if we’re being poisoned.” Grey laughed awkwardly. Unfortunately that was all too true. He was sure that it didn’t occur as often as it had in the past, but poisoning someone was extremely easy to do if they were unaware of it. “I don’t mean to sound paranoid, it’s part of the job I guess.” He was sure there were other potions that would be useful to them on the job, but they probably weren’t the ones making them up. So what was the point of taking the class again? “Irina is the Potions club captain right? Could always steal her notes or something. At this point, I’m not too opposed to doing anything to pass that class.” Stealing might be too far, but surely she’d let them borrow her notes. Outside of worrying about Potions class, he knew the tournament was something they were both anxious over. “Only one day? That seems a little too fast. I was thinking a week at least…” On the other hand, that was the most effective way to choose the champions. Those that really wanted to enter would have placed their names in that fast anyways. “True. Plus that’s missing out on your last year of schooling. Unless they brought professors with them, I don’t see the point of sticking around. Friendship and bonds with other students is great and all, but I wouldn’t take that at the price of learning.” Grey paused for a second to think over what he had said before continuing. “Never thought I’d actually say I preferred school over doing nothing. Hit me if I say that again.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Anna nodded and laughed when Grey commented on Potions as well. "I'm just glad you don't think I'm crazy for hating the class," she told him with a laugh. He was right about the poisons, but Anna didn't have anything else to add about that. "Yeah, and quite honestly, if I'm worried about poisons, I'll carry around a Bezoar. That should take care of most of it and if it's a poison that won't take care of, I'm already a goner." Not that Anna wanted to be negative, but it was true. If the Bezoar couldn't take care of her, she wouldn't be able to make a remedy potion in enough time. "But we don't have to steal Irina's notes. I'm sure she'd let us look if we asked." Anna and Irina were close friends. She didn't know how well Grey and Irina got along, but if all else failed, she could look at Irina's notes and then share her own notes with Grey. Still, she doubted that would be necessary. She laughed at Grey's surprise, "Yeah, that's what they told me. I just think we're waiting too long. Everyone is getting more and more anxious about it as time passes. I don't know about you, but I'm having a hard time focusing on class ..." Anna normal did quite well in school, but the worry over this tournament was driving her mad. Really, she should try to forget about it, but it was hard when you saw foreigners no matter where you went. She shrugged, "I'm sure they're studying somehow. But ... if I had the chance to go to another school for the tournament, I would probably go." Completely the opposite of Grey, but that was alright. Anna cared more about people than her schooling even though she did well with both generally. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us “If you’re crazy for not liking potions, then I need to be locked up somewhere. I have no idea how I passed last year, let alone got accepted into the NEWT class…” Diligence and hard work is what the average person would have answered with, but he was sure that it didn’t have to do with that. Grey, and everyone else in the class for that matter, knew he could do it. He just didn’t want to apply himself in something that was interesting enough. Unfortunately potions drew the short straw from him and that was it. The professor had given him hell over the last few years because of this, but he didn’t really care. He made it to the highest level somehow, and was still going to pass this year too. Asking anything more from him was silly. “Bezoar isn’t a bad idea…I always forget about those.” He would definitely be killed by a poison. Utilizing bezoars to stop poisons was the first rule of potions class, and yet he forget about them most of the time. “Would she?” Grey asked, knowing full well that Irina wasn’t the biggest fan of his. It all stemmed back to a few years ago when he put two and two together and decided to write a newspaper article on her father. That was obviously a mistake. To add to that, she was probably the best at potions in Gryffindor, and Grey was more than likely one of the worst. He knew that usually the better students refused to help sometimes, letting the ones at the bottom to scramble around and figure it out on their own. He was positive Irina wasn’t one of those people, but if it was him asking, there was definitely a chance. He had never really thought about the fact that the tournament could have been held at one of the other two schools, and that they could have potentially been the guests. Putting it that way, then maybe he would have given up his final year to try ad participate. Again, if he wasn’t chosen he could use it as a chance to report on the tournament, same to what he’d be doing at Hogwarts. “I’m sure studying on that boat or in the carriage is quite the experience. A few of them have ducked into our classes, so that makes me think that they’re not really doing much outside of events they’re needed for.” The students from both schools were highly talented, that was for sure. They could have been ones that were on track to graduate with the highest marks, or ones that showed exceptional talent; enough that they would bring the victory back home. Grey was sure he wouldn’t have been a first choice for Hogwarts if they were sending students off, if anything, he was the type of student they didn’t want the other schools to see. Anna laughed. It was nice to talk to someone who understood her distaste for potions. It may be a bit ridiculous, but it wasn't really something she felt like she could control. She just didn't have the right touch for it. She shrugged when Grey said he wouldn't remember about a Bezoar. "It's kind of part of a story I've been told from birth about Uncle Harry saving Uncle Ron with a Bezoar, so it's kind of burned into my memory," she confessed easily. Really, that's one of the only reasons she remembered the thing. "Probably," Anna answered slowly. Why did Grey think Irina was out to get him? It didn't really make sense to her, but it was probably none of her business. "I can ask her to help both of us, if you want," she commented, wondering whether or not Grey would be interested in that kind of a thing. Anna nodded, "Yeah. I guess if I ever get the chance, I'll ask one of them about it because I'm curious, but you're probably right. I wonder what the rest of them will do when one gets chosen as champion. Do you think they'll stay here or go home?" Like Grey would know any more than she did. Really, Anna was just thinking out loud. "So what are you supposed to be doing now? Studying?" Anna asked with a teasing smile. She was almost ready to go pick up that book and try again ... but she could talk to Grey for a bit longer. Especially if it meant putting off potions. grey xavier slater (ooc: do you want us to end this soon?)
