Jamie needed time to think, and she needed it desperately. She had just gotten back to Hogwarts, and her life was already falling apart again. Max had had an argument with her best friend and Jamie had been the shoulder to cry on, her newest half-brother had a crazy cousin who seemed to hate her, and her girlfriend was...no longer her girlfriend, it seemed. Everything was stacking higher and higher, and she hadn't even talked with Adrian yet. She hated to admit it, but he was probably going to add something to the mess, too. And she would accept whatever he had to add - the Hufflepuff just needed time to straighten everything out first. She had stayed up late and gone up to the Astronomy tower under the guise of finishing her first homework assignment for the class, but really, Jamie just needed a place where she could think. The tower was a good place for that. She could look at the stars spread above her or the grounds sprawling below her and gain some sort of perspective on the world. When she reached the top of the tower, Jamie sat on the floor, back against the stone wall, and closed her eyes. She knew that she should spread her parchment across her lap or something similar, so that if anyone came up she could pretend to be doing her homework, but Jamie was just exhausted. Something about the school always seemed to cause her life to come crashing down, and already she was doubting if she would be able to build it back up again.

Maria had spotted the blonde at dinner. You know, the blonde trying to steal her cousin? Miss perfect perky barbie? Yeah, that girl. In yellow. Yellow was... Hufflepuff she believed. Though she honestly didn't care. It didn't matter what house the girl was in, it didn't change the fact that this girl was trying to pull Elias into something. So, Maria knew she needed to talk to the girl. Alone. No spunky little sister, or Elias to protect her, or stop Maria.
She was still learning the layout of the castle, so she had to follow the Hufflepuff girl... Whatever her name was. She knew she'd heard it, but hadn't cared enough to remember. Anyway! She had to follow the girl, all the way up to one of the towers. And, thankfully? She was alone. No one else in sight. Maria stayed hidden for a few minutes, watching the girl warily from her spot in the shadows. She was sitting on the ground, a roll of parchment on her lap. After only another few seconds, she stepped out of the shadows. "Someone looks like they've had a rough day." Maria offered as way of 'greeting'. She'd strategically placed herself in front of the door. She wasn't letting the girl leave until she was good and ready.

Jamie hadn’t realized she had company in the tower. She hadn’t thought to look around before sitting down, which was apparently a mistake. Jamie didn’t know much about Elias’s cousin, but she did know that Maria didn’t hold any fondness for her. The Hufflepuff wasn’t used to people not liking her for who she was – she knew that there were some who took issue with what she was, but that was different. They didn’t know her. In a way, Jamie supposed Maria didn’t know her, either. She only knew what Elias had told her, and Jamie hadn’t bothered to explain how absolutely messed up her life had become over the summer. It wasn’t the sort of thing that you told someone on first meeting them. So, despite Maria’s words sounding like they should have been sympathetic, Jamie knew they were anything but. Steeling herself for an argument, Jamie looked up at the Durmstang girl. “I’ve had worse.” She replied evenly. Maybe if she didn’t let herself be scared of the other girl, Jamie would be able to get out of the tower unscathed. Considering Maria was blocking the entrance, Jamie didn’t think that was likely. “What do you want, Maria?” Might as well get to the point of the confrontation, if they were going to have one.

Maria grinned. She could almost sense how the girl tensed up at her appearance. Jamie still didn't know about the half Veela, or the fire starting. But most people could sense something was off about Maria. Something dangerous. It seemed the girl was the same. That, and she knew Maria didn't like her. Maria quickly closed the distance between them, and crouched down next to Jamie, forcing that grin to soften just a bit. To appear more... friendly. "That isn't very nice! Is that how they teach you to greet people? You know, a hello and how are you are usually socially acceptable." Maria brushed her hair off of her shoulders, so it would fall into her face as they talked. "But, I suppose that'll do, this time."
Maria was quiet for a moment, her gaze moving up and down, taking in every inch of the blonde. It wasn't like she wasn't attractive. She was. But the very idea that she shared the same father as Elias was enough to deter her typical flirtatious appetite. That, and she wasn't about ready to flirt with someone trying to take her cousin away. "I wanted to talk. Just the two of us. No little kittens trying to be brave lions to get between us." She was talking about the younger sister, the one that had her wand out last time. Heck, she was even referring to Elias there. "First. I forgot your name. What was it again?"

Jamie sighed when Maria got closer to her, kneeling beside her. Had the fact that she had gone up to an abandoned tower late at night not screamed ‘I want to be alone’ enough for the girl? Apparently not, because now Jamie was being lectured on appropriate manners of greeting people. She was really not in the mood for any more lectures, or talking to anyone, really. Maria seemed insistent, though, and it was all Jamie could do not to roll her eyes. Normally she was the epitome of Hufflepuff patience, but today was not a normal day. Jamie just gritted her teeth and nodded slowly. She wanted to get this over with so she could go back to thinking about her current situation – Jamie knew herself well enough to know that if she didn’t think it over, she’d end up doing something rash that would ultimately make everything worse.
“If you want to talk, then talk. I’m listening.” Jamie said impatiently. Was that really worth the announcement? Of course they were going to talk – that was what they were doing at that very moment. Normally, she would have bristled at the implication that her sister was pretending to be anything, but today, lion was really the wrong word to use. She was too done with Gryffindors and their arrogance right now. “My name is Jamie.” The Hufflepuff snapped. Couldn’t they just get this over with?

Ooooh, snippy little badger! Maria was grinning widely as the girl, Jamie, retaliated rather viciously. She definitely wasn't in a good mood today. And yet, she was permitting Maria's presence. No demand she leave, or ferocious little come back. That made Maria's grin even wider. For some absurd reason she was going to tolerate Maria. "Right. Jamie. Sorry, I'm not that great with names." Well, that was a lie, mostly. She just hadn't wanted to remember Jamie's name the first time. Maria had already been on the defensive last time the spoke, so she hadn't been very open to new information. Today though? She was a bit more receptive.
Maria stayed crouching, mostly because if Jamie made a move she could react much faster if she wasn't totally sitting. And she liked being just a little taller then Jamie, who was sitting down. Made her feel like she had more power and control over the situation. "I'll just get straight to the point then. Elias isn't interested in joining your little 'Greyback club'." She said quite bluntly. No reason to sugar coat it.

Something in the way Maria said she wasn’t great with names made it so the Hufflepuff didn’t believe her. It wasn’t like her name was particularly hard to remember, especially since it tended to float around school quite a bit as people told the first years about the Greyback family. There were three of them – well, four, now – at the school and so it was kind of difficult to avoid hearing their names every once in a while. They were almost becoming on par with the Weasleys as far as school wide recognition, though Jamie hoped that, unlike the Weasleys, they weren’t being known for carrying on the family name or whatever. The Weasley family name was stupid anyways.
“It’s not a club, it’s a family.” Jamie retorted. “And if Elias isn’t interested, why isn’t he up here telling me himself?” It seemed to Jamie like it was Maria who wasn’t interested in Elias getting to know his half-siblings, not Elias himself. That seemed pretty stupid to Jamie. If Elias didn’t want them, fine, but if his cousin was the one who didn’t want them, that was definitely not fine. “Look, this may be hard for you to believe, but just because we’re not proud of our dad doesn’t mean we don’t want to get to know each other. It’s nice to know that someone else has to deal with the same crap as you do just because of a stupid last name.” Maria wasn't a Greyback, so she wouldn't understand. No one really could.

Family. Maria hated hearing Jamie say that word and Elias' name in the same breath. It made her blood boil actually. "Elias is too nice for his own good. Even if he's not interested, he just can't say no. That's why I'm here." Elias was nice. And sweet. And Maria had to protect him. From everything that might hurt him, or take him away from his real family. "You aren't his real family, sweetheart. You're a complete stranger to him. You and the rest of your little family." She started, smiling sweetly. "So, what's the plan? You want to have some big, happy family? Your own fairytale ending, where everything is all rainbows and lolipops?" She asked, taunting and venom in her voice. "Elias has been handling it just fine, with out your help. Or is this really all about you? You want to find and make people as miserable as yourself so you can feel better?"
Maria smirked, leaning forward a bit. "Look, hun. I don't want to make things worse for you. But if you don't back off... Well, you'll find out why the little one felt such a need to carry a wand around me. And believe me, the whole werewolf thing? Doesn't scare me."

From what Jamie had seen of Elias, he was perfectly able to say no. He had said no when he walked away from her in the alley, and he had said no when he told Jamie not to fight with Maria. She’d barely conversed with Elias and both times, he had said no. Maria was just too self-centered to realize that Elias was his own person with his own agenda, a person who couldn’t be controlled like a puppet. And then Maria had the audacity to claim that Jamie wanted a fairy tale! Right now, she would be happy to settle for a mediocre ending. “If you care to know, we are a big, happy family.” Jamie snapped. “But we sure as hell aren’t a fairy tale. Do you really think that Elias is the only one who got screwed over by Fenrir? Because let me tell you, he wasn’t. He killed my sister’s mother. He took advantage of my mother, a minor, and then persuaded her to let him bite me. He tore my girlfriend’s uncle’s face apart with his bare hands.” Well, ex-girlfriend now, but that was all fine print. “We aren’t a fairy tale, and I don’t want a fairy tale ending. I just want an ending where the people I love are happy.” That was a lot to ask in these dark times, but Jamie hoped. Jamie hoped hard.
“It’s not the wolf you have to be afraid of, hun.” Jamie snarled. “She doesn’t know how to hold a wand.” It was too bad that Maria had thought Jamie was safe enough to get close too, because it was all too easy for the Hufflepuff to draw her wand and aim it right between the other girl’s eyes. “Stupefy.”

"Oh! So... This is about a collection then? Because if you're already sooooo happy, why the hell do you need to drag Elias into this? Just not content with what you have? You have to have all or none, right?" Maria taunted, smirking wickedly as she leaned back just a little bit. "Love? You don't even know him. So don't need to include him in your delusions." She finally hissed. Maria was pretty sure she'd made herself clear. Jamie was the one dumb enough to not listen, and keep fighting the inevitable. Well, Maria was slightly okay with that. It meant she could teach Jamie the hard way what happened when you didn't listen to her.
The wand in the face was surprising to say the least. It was by pure chance that Maria managed to turn her head just in time to avoid the stunning spell right in the face. Though it brushed right through her hair, so close Maria almost felt it on her cheek. Well. Look who finally bared her teeth. Maria raised a hand, to touch the spot on her cheek that the spell had almost struck, before turning her gaze back to Jamie. She wasn't smiling anymore. In fact, her expression had gone deathly still. No emotion. And that was even more terrifying then the anger and rage that was usually written all over her face. "Interesting." She finally said, as she rolled back tot her feet and took a step back. "You're even stupider then I thought. If it's war you want, then it's war you'll get. Just remember one thing though. There are always casualties... and you have more to lose then I do." She threatened. "Thanks for telling me who's most important to you, Jamie. It'll make this so much easier. See ya." She sounded almost... cheerful as she finally offered her farewell. But it was far from innocent. She'd made her intentions clear. If Jamie was so determined to take away Maria's family? Well, Maria would take away Jamie's.

“Sorry that I want my half-brother to have more family than a crazy Veela bitch who threatens everyone who’s not on her good list!” Jamie snapped. She was so done with this conversation. Screw sitting around and thinking. She wanted to go to bed, and curl up under the covers, and sleep, and never, ever come out again. That sounded like a perfectly good plan to her, especially since it involved absolutely zero interaction with Maria. “I didn’t include him in that, and if you weren’t such an idiot, maybe you would realize that!” Jamie wasn’t normally this mean-spirited, but Maria had really gotten her at the worst time, and what she was saying about Elias and about the rest of Jamie’s family wasn’t really helping her case. The Hufflepuff was patient, but she snapped when she was stretched too far, like some bizarre rubber band.
When Maria left, threat hanging in the air, Jamie finally felt the aftereffects of snapping. Her stomach was somewhere near the bottom of the tower and her lips began to tremble almost as soon as Maria had exited. She was just so exhausted, and all of this Tournament stuff wasn’t making her life any easier, and she was…alone. Again. She couldn’t go to her family with this because they would all be so, so mad at her for putting their lives in danger because she lost her temper. Jamie felt like Maria had sawed her heart out of her chest, and then lopped off all of her limbs, to boot. She was scared, and suddenly sleep didn’t seem like such a great option. She wasn’t strong enough to chase the inevitable nightmares away.
