The Monsters walk among us He had done it now. Everything he had done to avoid contact with Addi may as well get thrown out if Theodosia had just witnessed all of that. Grey thought he had been careful the past week, removing himself from the room whenever he saw her or Edmund. The idea was to show that he was being distant, hoping she would get the hint and go back to how things used to be. Clearly a screaming sister and a punch to the face later, it didn’t seem like that had worked out the way he had planned. To make it worse, he could have ended all of it right then; break the pact with Theodosia, explain everything to Addi, and that was it. It would put all of them under close watch by the nasty Slytherin, but it was better than this. And yet, he had gotten up and left the Great Hall, refusing to look at Addi, refusing to talk to her. Grey realized now that this is what Theodosia wanted out of all of this. To ruin his sister by using him. How stupid to fall into such a simple trap like that. Walking out of the Great Hall was the hardest thing Grey had ever done in his life. He knew everyone was watching, talking, and judging him for what he had just committed to. It disgusted him that he was even capable of that. The black-eye he was sure Addi had given him was proof that he deserved everything he had signed up for. Brushing by a few students standing out in the hallway, he was sure his appearance probably freaked them out a little bit. They might have just missed the show of a lifetime. The whispers of passerby’s only solidified everything that had happened even more. Grey couldn’t keep doing this to Addi. It was wrong to have even taken up the deal in the first place, he knew that now. Getting around all of it was going to be a pain too, especially the way Theodosia had laid everything out to him. Grey was positive she had others helping her, or ones that she reported to. The girl had made that quite clear at the end of their little chit-chat. Edmund was a possibility, but after the circus show that just went down, there was no way he could confront the kid without getting attacked again. As all of these thoughts were running through his head, Grey started to feel dizzy. He hadn’t noticed that his adrenaline was now wearing off from getting punched, and the pain from it was starting to kick in. He had barely made it up the marble staircase to the first floor when he unconsciously tapped his eye, only to have a sharp stab shoot through his head. Grinding his teeth, he moved as fast as he could for the bathrooms down the hallway. Practically kicking the door open, he ran in and used one of the porcelain sinks to hold himself up as he tried to check out his eye. It looked awful. Grey choked back a small laugh at this ungodly sight. Finding time to laugh after a situation like that was his only release from all of it. He’d need to either fix it up on his own or go to the hospital wing and get it checked out. Right now though, he needed to collect his thoughts and bearings until the dizzy spell passed over. There was no way he was walking around in the hallways when he could barely stand on his own. Whether that was from the pain in his head or the sickening thing he had done to Addi, he didn’t know. Claire couldn't believe what she'd just seen. Addilyn. Sweet, sweet Addilyn and just walked up the Grey and hit him. Really hit him. You could hear the force behind the punch from where she'd been leaning against the wall on the complete other end of the Great Hall. Claire instantly moved to rush in, but stopped, waiting to see what happened next. What would Grey do? Why had Addi hit him? The strangest thing happened though. Grey just got up.. and left. Not a word. Not even looking at the youngest Slater. Looking at one of the other Aurors stationed near her, they knew immediately what she was going to say. They could read the request on her face. They nodded, and waved her off. Something was going on with her siblings, and she was going to find out what.
She hurried after Grey. He wasn't moving fast, so she caught up quickly. The only problem? He headed straight into the boy's bathroom. Well... That was awkward. With a sigh, she hesitated only a moment before following him in. HE was at the sinks, examining the already bruising eye. Addilyn had hit him dang good, that was for sure. There were several other students in the bathroom, and Claire shot them strict looks, in full Auror mode. "Out. All of you." She ordered. They didn't hesitate, scurrying out like mice. You didn't mess with Aurors. Once the bathroom was clear of everyone but herself and her brother she looked at him, hands on her hips. "What was that about?"

The Monsters walk among us Grey had only been in the bathroom for a short period, but it had filled up quick. He wasn’t sure if they were observers, trying to see what had happened to him. There was no way anyone in the Great Hall had missed any of that show. How pitiful. It was stupid that this had evolved into what it was. He had never intended Addi to get that hurt over him ignoring her like that. All she had to do was send Edmund over and talk to him about it, but apparently something had happened before that could, and the punch was the result. He didn’t care anymore. This is exactly what Theodosia had wanted from the beginning, and Grey had stupidly wandered right into hit. Barely touching his eye, he felt the burning sensation from earlier return, shooting little pings of pain through his face. Merlin’s beard Addi could throw a punch. Once this was all over, if she could ever forgive him, he’d have to ask her how she learned to do that. All he could do right now was make light of it and move on. There was a deal still in place with Theodosia, and he knew it was bound to hurt Addi more than it would hurt him. It was for the best though, because that meant the freaky little Slytherin wouldn’t get off on torturing Addi anymore. Suddenly, he heard the bathroom door open and a female voice yelled for everyone to get out. Grey looked over and saw Claire enter. Great. That’s exactly what he needed. He continued to observe his eye, not acknowledging his sister. She was only going to make things worse than they were, and Grey was already trying to move on from the punch. “Oh, were you talking to me?” Grey said, finally turning from the mirror to face his sister, pointing at himself as he did so. “Nice to see you too! When did you get to Hogwarts? Right now? Yesterday? Last week? Or at the start of term?” He could deal with Addi, no problem. But Claire….she was an entirely different story. This wasn’t going to be pretty. “And since when did you start caring about what I’m up to, Claire?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

There was the attitude. It was like a switch. He saw Claire, and bam, switch flipped and suddenly the sarcasm and spite was flying out at impressive speeds. It was a real talent he had. One she'd never appreciated. They'd never gotten along. At least not that she could remember. But their dysfunction had gotten worse the older both of them became. And of course his first jab had to do with when she'd gotten to Hogwarts. She frowned. It was a valid point, but one that struck a nerve. She hadn't told him she was being stationed at Hogwarts. And she hadn't sought him out before now either. But, to be fair, she'd only spoken to Addilyn twice. Once just to say she was there, and the second time because Addi was searching the castle relentlessly for her. She'd had to confront her the second time. She'd planned on keeping her distance from both of them, but they were making it near impossible. She chose not to retaliate to his jabs, letting out a soft sigh instead.
"People tend to care when their younger siblings start hitting each other for no apparent reason, Grey." Well... She'd manged to not retaliate to most of them... A moment later, and she sighed, taking her hands off her hits and running a hand through her hair. "Look, can we not do this right now? Really, what is going on? What was all that about?"

The Monsters walk among us He figured Claire would avoid the question about when she had gotten to Hogwarts. Scratch that, he knew she would jump around it. She had been more and more distant than usual lately, more so than normal, and that was saying a lot. Addi didn’t even think Claire was sharing everything with her, or even acting the same as she always had, and it was starting to look like the youngest Slater was right. Even if they weren’t getting along, Claire still would have at least made it known that she was at the school. Grey had a feeling she might even have gone far enough to tell Finn and Rai not to say anything to him about it. That wasn’t their fault of course, she was their superior, and they knew the problems that the siblings had with each other. The fact that it wasn’t just him she had ignored when she arrived though, Addi apparently unaware of her position at the school too (at least the last time Grey had spoken to Addi, she didn’t know), was infuriating. Claire and Addi had always gotten along miles better than Grey had with either of them. And here was the oldest sibling, doing whatever she wanted without even talking to her siblings. How did that make her any better than Grey? He didn’t think it did. All Grey could do when she finally answered him was roll his eyes at her. He had expected that kind of response as well. Feigning innocence seemed to be Claire’s specialty, especially when it came to communicating with him. “Care about your siblings, or just Addi? Because we both know you don’t give a damn about me. Remember, I’m the one who can’t live up to anyone’s standards. Yours, or mum and dad’s. That’s okay though. I’m doing fine. Absolutely, positively, wonderful. Just like always.” He clenched down onto the sink with his left hand, as he felt his head start to spin again. Now wasn’t the time for that. Grey needed to deal with Claire, get her off his back, or something. “No, I think now is perfect for it. Addi obviously hates me, I’m sure you saw that, so we might as well get everything else out in the open right?” Grey felt like he had been preparing for this encounter his entire life. After he started to pull away from everyone, trying to focus on himself more than what his family wanted for him, he knew this would eventually happen. He never would have imagined it would be under these circumstances, but it was now or never. He wanted to know why Claire and his parents treated him the way they did, why he was the black sheep of the family. Grey knew it wasn’t all in his head, because Addi had pretty much acknowledged that she saw it happening too. All that was left now was the real reason, and Grey knew that Claire had an answer to all of it. “My day can’t get any worse as it is, so lay everything on me Claire. Then maybe once we’re done with that, we’ll talk about what just happened.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

The eye roll was like a small jab in her side. He didn't want to talk to her, obviously. No. But as he went on about her not caring about him, and him never living up to her expectation, she felt a flash of anger. That was the second time she'd been accused of that. First by Addilyn, and now Grey. She took a slow, deep breath, trying to keep those emotions from rising and showing. But he didn't stop. He just kept talking, even though he was obviously disoriented from Addi's hit. She didn't move to help him, keeping her distance from her younger brother, arms folded defensively across her chest.
Only when he finished speaking, demanding that she 'lay it on him', did she uncross her arms, taking a step closer. "You want the truth, Grey? Really? After seventeen years, you think I have some bloody standard for you? I've been too busy trying to live up to mum and dad's every damn expectation!" She hissed. She never raising her voice, aware of where they were and that yelling would attract more attention. "You've always acted like you're some 'reject'. Like no one gets you. And you'll never be good enough. And it drives me insane, because I'm not allowed to think like that. Because heaven forbid, I set a bad example to you or Addi. How dare I ever have a bad day. Or do something wrong. Or fail in anyway. You and Addi can do all those. You two are allowed to be human."

The Monsters walk among us To say he was taken aback by Claire’s sudden, explosively quiet response was one way to put it. Never in a million years would Grey have thought his sister would finally snap back at him. He had always expected it to happen, but never like this. After the events with Addi only a few minutes earlier it was starting to look like he enjoyed this kind of confrontation with his sisters. In a way, it was long overdue. These were issues they had always struggled with but could never materialize into words because it meant something like this would happen. Here they were though, finally ‘laying it all out’, exactly how Grey wanted it to be. He wanted to understand why Claire had always acted the way she did, and now she was telling him all about it. All he could do was stand there and listen. Had he expected her to say something different? Maybe. Somehow, Grey had always assumed their parents had treated Claire the same way they had done with him. Set them to ridiculous standards that were of astronomical proportions. The only thing was that it was easy to always assume he was the only one that it applied to. Claire had made school and getting a job look so easy, how was he supposed to realize that she was trying to ‘set an example’ for him and Addi when it didn’t look like it affected her at all. She was more than diligent, and the more he thought about it, the more it all started to make sense. “So…” he started, not sure where to go with it. Trying to understand all of this at once was difficult. He still had thoughts about Addi punching him in the face swirling around in his head and now Claire was telling him all these things about how she could never risk failing or show weakness around him or Addi. Why not? He had done a pretty damn good job and their parents didn’t care. It sounded like Claire had taken to heart something that wasn’t necessary. After a few seconds of silence, Grey continued his thought. “…why keep doing it then? I understand what mum and dad expect out of us, but you don’t have to follow what they want all the time. Look at me, I’m a prime example of that. I’ve stopped caring about what they want, and do what I think best suites my life. I can’t really speak for Addi, but she seems to be happy with the way things are going for her,” he stopped for a few more seconds to think about that again. Addi had never been placed under the scope of scrutiny like Grey and Claire had. She was the youngest, albeit only by one year, but the youngest nonetheless. “It’s not like you have to stop caring about what they want you to do, but maybe realize that they aren’t the absolute power over you. The only one who can decide that is you Claire.” Grey tried to crack some sort of smile, but even the effort hurt his eye. The sharp pain that had existed there was starting to turn into a dull throb now, so it was slightly more bearable than a few minutes earlier. Clearly the two of them had misunderstood everything from the very start. If only they had been able to communicate that years ago, and he never would have treated her the way he had. It wasn’t fair for Claire. Grey knew that he had been set up for those standards as well, trying to become another poster child for Addi. Everything revolved back to her. They had to be perfect for her, no matter what. It was a little disgusting, because all Addi wanted was her siblings to act like normal people around each other, instead of this crazy hostility that they had now, at least that was what he had gleamed from all of it. Maybe now was the time to set that in motion, despite the situation that was currently engulfing Grey and his younger sister. “Listen…I’m sorry for not realizing that they treated you the same way. I’m sure acting out wasn’t the best impression to make either and I can only imagine what mum and dad wanted you to do to try and get me back in line.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Grey made it sound so.... so easy. Like she could just say to hell with it all, and drop everything. She wished it was that simple. That she could be like them. Carefree, have fun, be... normal and not care about everything she did. To not stay up late every night mastering some new concept that she'd use the next day so she could make it look easy. To actually let people know she struggled sometimes, and that she wasn't perfect and occasionally needed help. Casey had been that person for her, while he was alive.... But now? There was no one. No one she trusted to be that honest with. Even her own siblings.
"I can't stop." She slowly muttered, her outburst finally over. She didn't even think she could function if she stopped. Trying to be perfect and meet all their expectations had become so ingrained with who she was, she might break if she stopped. Because in light of Casey's death? That was one of the only things keeping her together. "I can't let them, or you two, down." God, all she wanted was to finally make her parents proud. For once. To finally hear 'good job', instead of 'that's what we'd expect'.
Claire sighed, shaking her head. "It's fine, Grey. I can handle them. But... I need you to look after Addi. She probably hates me right now, and she needs someone." She didn't say why Addi hated her. Didn't elaborate into the situation at all. Because that'd mean admitting she was barely keeping her head afloat these past few months. Letting out another breath she slowly approached her brother. "Sit down, okay? Let me take a look at your eye..." Healing wasn't her specialty, but she knew quite a bit about it. Had to, considering her field. You couldn't always get mediwizard help, so you needed to at least have a basic knowledge of healing. And for Claire, that meant learning and mastering as much of it as she could.

The Monsters walk among us He didn’t really understand why she couldn’t stop. Was it simply because she had been doing it her entire life? He had done a pretty good job at meeting expectations for more than half his life, and didn’t have too much trouble tossing all of it aside in one fell swoop. But this was Claire they were talking about. She had a point, to a degree. He could list off numerous things that he would think could help her out, but he knew her too well. Things weren’t that simple with her. While he had been fundamentally wrong about their disagreements, she was still the same person he had always made her out to be: driven, relentless, and hardworking. She just didn’t know what would happen if she stopped. To add to that, it seemed like letting all of that go would do insurmountable damage to her relationship with their parents. Grey was willing to throw his own away, and the way it sounded with Addi, she would do the same thing if push came to shove. “I think you’re more afraid of letting yourself down, more than anything.” He tried to crack a smile at his sister. “You’ve done a good job Claire. You became an auror, graduated with high marks. Addi and I are kind of following in your footsteps.” His head tilted back and forth as he tried to reason himself into that statement. Sure, he was in NEWT level classes, but he wasn’t the best at them. When she said she could handle their parents, he felt a pang of guilt. There was no way he had made it any easier on her. Realizing that now was a little too late though. He tried to ignore the part about Addi hating her, but it was too hard to dodge around. Pointing at his eye, he laughed. “Guess we can agree on something then.” As soon as he stopped laughing, Grey tried to turn the conversation back around. This wasn’t something to joke about. They had obviously both screwed up when it came to Addi. “Honestly, I think you can help her more now than I can. All I’ve managed to do lately is screw up.” Frowning, he accepted Claire’s offer to look at his eye. He had been planning on fixing it on his own, it wasn’t hard, but he needed to make things better with her. Sitting down on the floor, he tilted his head back so she could get a clear look at his eye. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Claire's eyes widened slightly at her brother's observation. Letting herself down? She'd.... never really considered it that way, but he had a point. Was she afraid of letting herself down? After a surprised moment, she slowly smiled. "Maybe I am. Maybe I'm afraid I won't be able to function if I stop, like it might be the only thing holding me together anymore." More then maybe. She knew that for a fact. Because if she let herself stop, then she'd have to face the full force of Casey's death. If she kept moving at this pace, trying desperately to be perfect then she didn't have time to worry about that.
She slowly closed the distance between herself and her younger brother as he sat on the ground and tilted his head so she could get a good look at his eye. She hadn't commented yet on his remark about her helping Addi and how he'd screwed things up. She knew how that felt. She crouched down next to him, and placed her fingers under his chin as she carefully examined the black eye. Dang, Addi had hit him hard. Harder then she'd thought Addi was capable of. "Looks like we're both screwing up at this whole 'older sibling' thing." She muttered as she pulled her wand out. "I don't.... really know how to relate to her right now. A lot has been going on..." She'd been distance since summer started, with the whole family. Almost as if she'd forgotten how to function and interact with them after Casey's death.

The Monsters walk among us The smile was all he needed to see to know that Claire understood him. Her response still showed hesitation though, but at least she was starting to grasp the things that were apparently plaguing her. He had never expected to be giving his older sister life advice. There were still things missing from their conversation, like why she was acting the way she was now, compared to when she had still been in school with them, but he decided not to push that any further. That would come out eventually. “Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to let it all go.” Was that the right way to put it? “Or just take a step back from it all for a little while. It doesn’t mean you need to change at all, just find where you want to go.” At least that was stuff that he had used before. Usually a lot of the advice he gave others ended up resonating with his issues more than he thought. This time it was all reflection. Tilting his head back so Claire could get a good look at his eye was way more painful than he had anticipated. The low throbbing sensation that he had somewhat ignored since he entered the bathroom was now a pounding force shock waving through his head. It was comical that the punch itself didn’t hurt, and neither did him poking the bruised area, but the second he tipped his head back it was a completely different story. It was the type of pain that was nauseating. Sheer willpower kept the contents of his stomach down, not wanting to make anything more out of the black-eye than it already was. He was sure his face was ghostly white, maybe even enough to scare Peeves if he happened to pass through the bathroom at that moment. Grey let out a small laugh as Claire examined his eye, mentioning that they were both messing up as older siblings. Barely noticing that she had pulled her wand out and had it rather close to his eye, he inadvertently pulled away slightly, her hand holding him steady though. She was probably used to working under the pretenses that the other person knew exactly what was going on. Having a wand pointed straight at his eye was terrifying. “Maybe step back and let her do her own thing? Like you did with me? I know I need to listen to her more…” he trailed off, realizing that it was that exact reason, not listening to Addi, which resulted with him getting the black-eye. “No rush though. It sounds like you have things you need to figure out first. Addi is pretty forgiving. Might have to let her punch you first though.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Part of her wished Grey knew. Wished her family knew. About Casey. About them. About the engagement. About how he died. But it was too late to tell them now. She didn't want to go and tell them now because it felt like.... like they'd just tell her to move on. Like everyone else. She didn't want to move on though. Each morning when she woke up there was a blissful moment where everything was alright. Where Casey wasn't dead. But that's all it was. The faintest of moments, and it was gone so quickly that it left her empty. So, she just nodded at his advice. Because for her? She didn't want to let go. IT was how she was functioning. Keeping busy kept her from thinking about him. But she couldn't stop thinking about him because she didn't have any sort of closure. A painful cycle.
"Where did she learn to hit this hard?" Claire thought aloud as she examined the eye. She could see the way his eyes moved that this was a painful, and probably disorienting position. "She might have even give you a slight concussion." She added. Nothing that couldn't be fixed, thankfully. When he moved to pull away she tightened her grip, just enough to hold his still. He wasn't getting away, not in his state. "Hold still." She ordered before he mentioned letting Addi do her own thing. Claire lowered her wand for a moment, mulling it over. Maybe Addilyn did just need some space. She smiled and shook her head. "Maybe. But I'd rather she not hit me after seeing her handiwork on you." She teased and raised her wand once more. With the smallest of waves, she softly muttered the healing spell. It wasn't perfect, obviously, but it'd help. She pocketed her wand and released his chin. "You'll probably want to see one of the nurses about the concussion, but otherwise you should be fine."

The Monsters walk among us Stifling another laugh as Claire mentioned Addi had hit him hard, Grey could feel his arms tense up. The nauseous feeling he had gotten right when he tipped his head back hit him again, forcing him to close his eyes until it passed over. “Who knows...probably had to learn how to fend for herself in Slytherin.” Either that or Edmund had showed her how to after her encounter with Theodosia. Seemed like something he would help her out. Grey didn’t want to mention Ed though, unsure if that was his business to tell Claire or not. Addi was already pissed off at him enough, spilling her rather public relationship with Edmund to an unknowing older sister was the last thing on his list of what not to do. He had his moments of idiocy and ignorance, but this was not one of those times. Claire’s grip on him tightened as he tried to pull away, but she wasn’t having any of it. Finally relenting, he kept still as she waved her wand around his eye. The fact that he could have a concussion from this wasn’t too pleasing. It explained the dizziness and nausea though. The last thing he wanted was one of the nurses forcing him to stay overnight for observation. Plus explaining to them that his little sister punched him in the face was embarrassing, even if they were only a year apart. To add to that, he didn’t want her getting in trouble, assuming she hadn’t already (it was in front of the whole school after all), so having to give more details to adults was only going to make things worse for Addi. Once the spell fixed his eye, to whatever degree it was healed, he wouldn’t know until he went to the hospital wing, Grey managed to climb back to his feet. He felt a lot better standing up than he did with his head leaning back. Never having had a concussion before, if that’s what it was, Grey assumed the effects wouldn’t go away immediately. “I guess I should go right now then.” He turned back to face Claire. It seemed like they had kind of resolved their issues, at least in his head they had been, but there was no telling what would come of this. Ticking off one sister only to fix things with another. Seemed rather ironic to him. Making eye contact with his sister, Grey nodded his head at her. “I’m sorry for the way I’ve acted the last few years.” He trailed off, stepping past her towards the bathroom door. “Thanks Claire.” Pushing the door open, Grey headed up to the hospital wing to get his concussion checked out.
