Dan nodded as Nero answered about the school owls. He understood the owl getting jealous, that seemed pretty typical. The guy then finished attaching his order and watched as the owl took off. He glanced back to where Nero pointed out the school owls. Then Dan turned back to the guy, his smiling present. The emotions in the room had changed since he first walked in, of course, and that made Dan feel better. Still, there was something deep in this guy that Dan couldn't grasp. Some kind of... ingrained sadness or something. Dan nodded, "that's great, thank you. It's good to know where this is," he said with a nod. "Guess it's time to head down," he suggested, pointing back toward the stairs, "I just came up for some air, so, my business is done here," he chuckled a bit.

Nero had to think about that. Of all places you could possibly go for air, why would you pick the owlery? But Daniel had said he got on with animals. Each to their own, he supposed.
He still felt frustrated and confused, but he felt cheerful too. This polite banter was a safe zone, and he felt comfortable for the first time in days, the terseness in his voice and the tightness in his shoulders long gone. Even if it turned out Decima did hate his guts, he was more than just that, and he had needed that reminder.
“Well, if there's anything else I can do to point you in the right direction, now or in the future, feel free to ask.” He gestured to the staircase. “Guests first.”

Dan felt bad about the way Nero was feeling, but of course he wouldn't say anything to the guy about it. He'd already been acting weird enough when he first arrived. He nodded as Nero spoke, "thanks. I'll be glad too. I hope the rest of your year goes well, too," he added before following Neros gesture and heading down the stairs. Well, a rough day turned to be a fairly all right one, so far. New acquaintances were always... interesting.
