Dan sat up in his bunk on the ship in a cold sweat, his breath quicked. He bent over, running both hands through his hair. His head was aching and his heart rate was still high. He hated nights like this. The nights when high emotions from the day came back to knock him out of his sleep. This time it was obvious who the bulk of the emotions came from, considering his talk with Nik today. He frowned, dropping his hands back onto the bed in front of him as he remembered it. His own anger started to peak for a moment but he took a breath to steady himself. It didn't work. He cursed under his breath, reaching over to his bag beside his bed. He reached into the familiar pocket, where he'd find the sleeping potion, only to find that the vial was empty. He barely used it, so he didn't check it regularly. He would rather just take a long walk to calm down than resort to that. Mostly because the potions didn't take the emotions away, it just knocked him out but he still felt terrible in the morning. Tonight, though, the emotions were bad enough that he wasn't even sure he wanted to deal with the cool down walk right now. But, it was empty, so a walk it was. He slipped out of bed but as soon as he tried to stand he felt dizzy. Not only were Niks emotions coming to him, but others as well. His night with Irina on his birthday, his thoughts of weird jealousy at seeing Irina with James today... and even more emotions that he wasn't sure where they came from. He sat back down on the bed, gritting his teeth and clenching his hands until he forced himself to stand. He uncomfortably found his headmaster and gave them the low down. He needed to go on a walk or something to stop the shaking. He was embarrassed to be led instead to the hospital wing and after some fussing from one of the nurses, a young guy, Dan was now sitting on a hospital wing bed, feet hanging over the side, his arms crossed over his chest grumpily. Irina was dreaming. It had been a good day that day, a beautiful time in Hogsmeade, running into her friend James for lunch, and remembering she was surprising her sisters with Nik’s visit tomorrow evening should have given her plenty of pleasant dreams. It started out nice enough, she was running through a field of daisies and she could see someone ahead of her, laughing and calling for her to catch up. Before she could however, the dream changed in a swirl of colors, transforming the scene from light to dark... Loud music thundered in her ears and she was surrounded by people she didn’t know. Trying not to bump into anyone, Rina made her way through the crowd, feeling disoriented and confused as to where she was. She saw dancers up on a stage - was she at a strip club? She looked around and finally spotted a familiar face; Nikolai. She reached out towards him and tried to call out his name, but her voice sounded oddly disoriented and garbled. Instead, Nik wrapped his arms around a girl with dark hair and kissed her soundly. Suddenly, her brother was grabbed from behind by masked men. The largest of them whirled him around and punched him in the face. Rina looked on in horror as they continued to pummel at her brother, even as he fell down to the floor, bruised and bloody. One of the men pulled out a knife; its’ silver form glinted in the light as he plunged it downwards, the strange girl's screams mingling with her own…
Bolting awake, Irina gasped for air. She knew what had just woken her; the sight of her beaten brother were still dancing in front of her in the darkened Gryffindor girls dormitory. “No no no no no no,” she whimpered to herself, rocking back and forth and trying not to cry. She was shaking like mad as she gripped her blankets, taking deep breaths to calm her racing heart. She tried practicing the breathing techniques the Divination professor, Samuil as he had instructed her to call him since she didn’t take the class, had taught her. When that didn’t work after ten minutes, Rina ripped open her hangings to see if she woke anyone else up. Anna would sometimes be woken up by her nightmares; but tonight Anna was dead asleep. She fumbled with her nightstand drawer and pulled out the note Samuil had written for her if she ever had trouble - his brother Sasha was one of the nurses in the Hospital Wing, and he would provide her with a dreamless sleep potion if she showed him this note. Samuil had enchanted it so Irina could only use it five times; tonight would be the first time she really felt she needed it. She threw on her long silk cream colored bathrobe over her shorts and tank top and pulled the tie tight around her waist. Pocketing her wand, she cast a final glance over her shoulder at her sleeping roommates before leaving the room.
Irinalit her wand as she exited out of the Fat Ladys’ portrait and hurried down to the hospital wing. She hoped Sasha would be on duty tonight so he could assist her immediately and she could be on her way back to her dorm. She didn’t really like hospital wings; too sanitary and white for her liking. Sighing, she gently pushed open the doors to the room and began making her way down the corridor of beds towards the nurses’ office. She stopped as she heard the springs of one of the beds move, and she let out a small gasp as she turned around, holding her wand up high so that it illuminated her pale face. “D-Dan?” she whispered, her voice still shaking from the night terror. “What are you doing here?” she asked, moving closer but stopping short; she didn’t think her emotions would be very good for him right now.

Dan heard someone enter the wing and quickly laid down, not really wanting to explain to anyone why he was there. His hands were back behind his head and he closed his eyes. When the person got close enough for their emotions to hit him, however, he turned onto his side in hopes to shut them out. This person was panicked, wary, uncomfortable. All things he didn't want right now. He shfited his hands to flatten his palms over his ears as if that would help. He heard a voice through his hands, only vaguely, and he groned, turning back towarad the person, his eyes narrowed in anger. Then he saw who i was an his gaze softened, but only slightly. His head was still pounding and most of the emotions coursing through him were negative. He really hoped she couldn't tell in the dim light how red his eyes were. He nodded once, trying to ignore the shaking in her voice and the desire to stop it. He couldn't. Not right now. She took a step toward him and he lifted his hands at the same moment that she stopped short. She must have figured it out before he stopped her, which was a good sign. He smiled weakly, just a litle curve up on his lip. "Can't touch," he said softly. He hated this, but he sat up and moved back so he was as far away from her on the bed as possible, "it's nothing. Are you okay?" Irina Rose Krum

Irina managed a weak smile towards Dan as he lifted his hands; he looked terrible, so she was glad her instinct to stop before she got too close had held her back. “I know,” she said softly. Her smile faded as he asked if she was okay. “N-no...no I’m not okay. I had another dream, a nightmare,” she said, her lower lip trembling. She realized her emotions were bubbling over and took several steps back. Taking a deep breath, she let it out slowly, as an idea came to her. “Give me a moment,” she said, pulling out a small black book from her notebook pocket. “Samuil said I should have a dream diary when...when things like this happen,” she explained as she sat down on the bed furthest from Dan. She figured that if she could write out what she had seen, she could funnel her emotions onto paper; that way when she read it out loud to him. She paused before beginning to write; the images still swirled clearly in front of her. Shuddering, she cast an apologetic glance over at him before scribbling down her dream furiously, letting her emotions flow on the page.
Minutes passed, and Irina finally looked up, tears drying slowly on her face. Hastily wiping them away, she finally felt that she held her emotions in check, though her hands were still trembling. It was almost like an aftershock of the earthquake; even after getting her emotions out the shaking still lasted. “I think I’m okay to read you this now,” she said quietly, moving slowly towards him. Casting a glance at the door leading to the nurses’ office, she cleared her throat, willing her hands (and failing) to stop shaking. “In my dream, I was in a nightclub, unfamiliar and full of loud noises and colors. I saw Niko and tried to call out to him, but he couldn’t hear me. Instead, he grabbed a girl with long dark hair and kissed her. I don’t mean a kiss your mother greeting, I mean I don’t want to see that sort of kiss. I moved to turn away when all of a sudden three men in masks grab Niko and begin to beat on him. I tried to move towards him but I was rooted to the floor. They didn’t let up, not even when he fell to the floor bruised and bloodied. Then the person in front of him took out a knife, and the strange girls screams mixed with my own as I woke up,” she read, the shaking in her hands growing worse. She felt almost a sigh of relief exhale from her body; she didn’t have to suffer knowing this on her own anymore. She looked down at her book for a few minutes, too nervous to meet Dans’ eyes. “What about you? Will you tell me now what happened?” she whispered to break the silence.

She was smart, and he liked that about her. She also clearly was troubled about something but took the time to assess what he needed. He wished he had thought of doing that for her first but... alas, she was a better person than he was. He frowned, any trace of his smile leaving with the thought of how he was being so selfish right now, but that's how he had always been. He was used to it. She went on about how she had a nightmare and his brows furrowed in worry. Her emotions were starting to rise again and he instinctively leaned back, but she took those steps back and he immediately felt terrible for leaning back. This was why he knew dating someone was a stupid idea. She mentioned her Divination teacher and how he said she should have a diary for 'dreams like this', which meant it must have been seer style. This caused him to move closer, just a little. She caught her breath and they stayed apart for several minutes while she attempted to calm herself. He waited patiently, happy for the time to try and calm himself too. Just sitting here being distracted was actually making him feel a little better. not by much, though. When she finally looked up his eyes were waiting and he was sitting at the edge of the bed closest to her. His eyes shifted to her shaking hands for a moment and he realized that his had stopped. He breathed deeply, waiting for her to speak first. She did. She read from her diary, the horrible dream from tonight, and her emotions mixed with his until his knees were bent up on the bed next to his chest and his hands were back in his hair. He didn't shut his eyes though, even though he wanted to. She looked up, asking him to tell her what happened. He nodded, slowly lowering his hands to wrap around his knees instead. He looked like a little kid who had just had their own bad dream. "Overload," he explained, with just one word. He took another shaky breath, "you can come sit, I think," he said slowly. Immediately, Irina felt her legs take a few steps forward, but she stopped, hesitating again. Overload, that couldn’t have been good. She knew he had seen Nik that day, and wondered if it had anything to do with him. She didn’t know what Nik could tell Dan that he couldn’t tell his own sister, although she knew Nik had his own secrets. He didn’t like to be touched; he physically recoiled when strangers got too close to him, and Irina had no idea why. She’d asked him once, when they were younger, but he had grown so angry that she had never asked again, out of fear. Part of her hoped he had found someone to talk to about...whatever it was, but the other part of her was yearning to know. “I-are you sure I should get closer? I don’t want you to get overloaded because I can’t promise I can keep my emotions positive right now,” she said with a shaky laugh.
She cast another glance over to the nurses’ office. “Samuil’s brother promised he’d have a Dreamless Sleep potion for me if I needed it, that’s why I’m here. It was so real..the last time it got this bad was when I dreamed of the Kings Cross attacks and...and that came true,” she told him quietly, her eyes brimming with tears again. She immediately took another step back and took a shaky breath. “I’m-I’m sorry, I...” she stopped talking, and put her face in her hands. She turned away, not wanting Dan to see her in such a vulnerable state.

Her steps forward didn't cause him to lean back this time, but he was a little wary when she stopped. She went on, asking if he was sure and saying she didn't want to make him worse. His own hands started to shake and he let out his own shaky laugh after she did. He didn't speak yet as she looked over to the nurses office and explained why she came. He nodded, "it's a good ide-" he was cut off by her emotions heightening again. He clenched his fists and leaned back with a groan, "Irina I can't do this with you right now," he said through gritted teeth. He shut his eyes tight but he could still tell when she took a step back. He didn't know she had turned away until he looked back at her again. His knuckles were white now from the fist clenching. She had her face in her hands and she was facing away from him. He sighed, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees again. "Ri..." he started, but he just shook his head again. "I think you should go," he muttered it but his voice was firm. Irina Rose Krum

As Irina pulled herself together, she heard Dans words. I think you should go. A new emotion bubbled up inside her, not one of happiness, sadness, or fear. No, it was anger. "Go?" she finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. She was trembling again but her eyebrows were drawn as she finally turned to face him. "Is this how you handle things? By shoving people away so that you can deal with yourself by yourself? Is that how you expect to get through life? Because that sounds like a very lonely life to me," she said angrily, knowing her vocal level was rising. "Do you really think I want you to see me like this? Out of control and scared? I wanted to tell you everything when I had time to process things, not five minutes later! But here you are and here I am. You can't just send me away when you feel like you can't handle things. I want to be there for you, don't you get that you bloody idiot? I care about you!" she felt the angry tears pinprick her eyes as she clenched her hands into a fist. "But fine, have it your way. I will go to the nurse at MY school, get MY sleeping draught and leave MY hospital wing so YOU can be alone with your thoughts," she spat as she stormed off and banged on the nurses door.
It flew open at once and Irina was surprised to see not the brother that looked so much like Samuil, but his coworker, Cassius. Fortunately, one look at the note Irina handed him and he was off, grabbing the dreamless sleep draft for that night. What she did not foresee however, was when he ushered her back into the ward and locked the front door. Explaining that the nursing staff was studying side effects of the potion she was taking, he insisted that she needed to stay the night. With a warning and pointed glance at both of them, the nurse went back into his study, and the light turned out.
Immediately, Irina crossed over to the door and tried it without luck. She pulled out her wand and whispered 'Alohomora!' but it did not work either; he must have put a charm on it so it could not open by anyone but him on the inside until morning. Sighing resignedly, Rina took the bed that was the furthest away from Daniel and flopped down onto it. She got under the blankets and crossed her arms huffily, determinedly looking away. She looked down at the potion and realized that until she calmed down, it was pointless to take. She lit her wand and took out her dream diary again, going over what she had written, and writing out what she was feeling now to try and drain the emotions from her body.

That anger was like a red hot wall of fire crashing toward him, and he winced as the words started to follow it. He wished she hadn't turned around, but she did, and that was basically the last thing that he could take. Has she went on, his hands clenched tighter around his legs and he started shaking even more then he had been before. She was right, of course. He shoved people away, but he didn't think that was anything new. It was a lonely life, he was acutely aware of it. He started to rock back and forth, wincing every time her anger peaked. When she said, I care about you! he stopped for a moment, his eyes widening. Then she went on to confirm how this was her school and her hospital and her anger was stronger than ever before she marched away. Even though she had left, the emotions were still as strong as ever. That was Dan's problem, sometimes he couldn't make them stop. That's why he had come in the first place. he was so angry. At himself, at her, because of her anger. He was also sad, and in pain and before he knew it, tears were starting to come out of his eyes and there was nothing he could do to stop them. He started to rock back and forth again, his arms still wrapped around his knees. He didn't bother trying to cheer himself up, he knew it was just going to get bad again anyway. He hadn't even taken his own sleeping potion yet, it just sat on the table beside him. he just wanted to calm down on his own without some stupid draughts help. Well, that idea went to hell. When Irina came back out, he didn't' watch what she was doing. She heard her mutter 'Alohomora', so he assumed that Cassius had locked the door. Normally that idea would have amused him, but he was still sitting there crying. He kept his eyes averted when Irina moved to take the bed farthest from him, and he was thankful that no other students were there that night. This was bad enough. After a while, maybe twenty minutes, he cleared his throat loudly, "Ri, come on..." he muttered, not even sure if she could hear him. The sound came out as more of a choking sound then actual talking, though. Irina Rose Krum

Irina knew, moments after her outburst, that she had made things worse. Daniel felt emotions as if they were physical, and she didn’t think the feeling of anger was a pleasant one to experience. Still, she thought to herself a bit tartly, he had it coming; he always was pushing her away, ever since he discovered his empathy. One minute they were snogging, the next they were walking side by side as if nothing happened. It was frustrating to say the least. As she initially cast a glance over to Dan, she saw to her alarm that he was shaking. Was he...crying? Did Dan cry, was that something he was even capable of? The guilt within Irina bubbled over, and she forced herself to turn away, ashamed of her behavior. If she really cared for him, as she had claimed in her outburst, she would not have put him through this.
So instead of trying to approach him with her emotions running high, she wrote. She just wrote whatever came to mind, potion untouched by her side. She knew that if she went to bed angry she would wake up feeling drained, no matter the concoction she took. Slowly, but surely her anger subsided; she still felt a slight irritation and a more than slight pang of guilt, but much more calm. Her head jerked up as she heard Dan say something; she couldn’t really understand what he had said it came out as mumbled jargon, but she thought she heard his nickname for her. She looked over and saw him, hunched over his legs. Again, she felt a rush of sympathy and pity that ebbed away her irritation. She paused though, waiting to see if she could control herself. If anything was ever going to continue with them, she’d need to learn the ins and outs of this empathy thing.
Finally feeling alright, she sighed and got out of bed. Padding over to the bed next to his, she sat down, reached out and gently put her hand on his knee. “You are such a prat sometimes, do you know that?” she said softly, a small smile playing at her lips. She could tell now, this close up, that he had been crying, but she chose not to say anything about it. With her other hand, she held out her journal. “Have you ever just tried writing? Not writing down what you feel maybe, or what got you here, but just...anything that comes to mind. It’s cathartic, and maybe it can help?" she suggested. It had certainly helped her; she was willing to have him try anything to make him feel at least a little better.

Dan was unmoving, head leaning down onto his knees, when he heard her sit across from him. She touched his knee, and all her calm seeped into him, along with her subsiding anger and other emotions. Curiosity, that was clear. He looked up as she spoke, making eye contact. He couldn't help but smile a little as well at what she said. That he was a prat. He nodded slightly, making it clear that he was indeed aware of that about himself. Then she held out the journal and he raised his eyebrow. Writing? He shook his head then, reaching a hand out to clasp the journal and pull it toward him. He looked at it, then up at her, then at it again. Then with his other hand he patted the bed next to him, looking at her one more time, "I guess I could. Come here," he said softly, hoping that she'd take the invitation. He felt terrible, not just because of his abilities but because of himself. It was hard to feel everyone's emotions and then add your own on top of it. He opened the book to a blank page and took up a writing utensil, "I mean, where am I even supposed to start? And this is your book. So, unless we're sharing it..." he chuckled, realizing how ridiculous and possibly awesome that sounded. He'd have to get his own book as well, of course, if this worked but it was still a... cute idea? Irina Rose Krum

He was making eye contact, which must have meant he was starting to feel a little better. Irina was very glad that she had decided to keep away while she let her emotions subside into a calmness before coming over to him. He was receptive about the journal idea too, which made her happy. Though their….abilities were different, Rina had found solace in writing. Her heart fluttering a little, she got up and sat in the bed next to him. For a second she felt her heart pounding, but just as she was about to tell herself to calm down, she did. This wasn’t so scary; it wasn’t as if it was this summer and she was confused about her feelings for him. Now she wasn’t confused anymore.
“You start wherever you want; literally, the first thing that pops into your head, you write down. Just don’t think through it too much. I promise it’s cathartic,” she told him. She rested her chin on his shoulder lightly, gently reaching over and flipping through the pages she had already filled. “We can share if you want, unless you don’t want me reading what you say,” she added with a small chuckle. It was kind of cute, thinking about sharing something like this with him. Of course if he wanted his own she wouldn’t mind getting him one. “You could also just rip out the pages or wipe them blank if you don’t,” she said, still smiling though. She could feel her emotions grow happier, calmer as she sat with him; she'd almost completely forgotten about her night terror. Almost.

He breathed a sigh of relief when she got up and sat next to him. He didn't skip a beat in leaning toward her just slightly, so that their arms were touching. Even though that made her emotions stronger, he still did it. Because he wanted her to know that she was more important to him then his problems... or something like that. He nodded as she explained the book, staring at it with wide eyes. She rested her chin on his shoulder and he turned toward her a little before turning right back to the book as she flipped through the pages. "I want to share. I do," he said softly, taking in a deep breath afterward. Her emotions were changing as they sat together, growing more positive and happy, which in turn made his moreso. He lifted the writing utensil and pressed it onto the page, "you're going to watch me write then?" he asked, a slight humor in his voice. Irina Rose Krum

Irina lifted her chin slightly and raised a brow. “I mean, there was always some question of whether or not you can actually write,” she teased, wrinkling her nose. She raised her head off his shoulder and looked in another direction, twiddling her thumbs. She reached into her robe pocket to take out her wand and frowned as she felt something else in there as well, something tiny and square. She unearthed it to find a tiny music box, and her expression softened. “I forgot I put this in here,” she whispered breathlessly, more to herself than to Dan. The last time she had woken up with a night terror, she had pocketed the small music box her brother had given her when she was eleven and had gone up with it to the owlery. She must have played it for hours; she was surprised that the music would still play when she wound it up, but she thought her parents must have helped him enchant it with a spell to make it last longer.
She held the box in her hands, studying it closely. Without saying anything, her fingers automatically wound it up and smiled softly as ‘La Vie en Rose’ chimed gently through the air, its notes breaking the silence that always seemed to be cast over the ward. “My mum used to sing Niko and I this at night, so on the night before I left for Hogwarts, he gave this to me in case I ever felt homesick,” she explained aloud, her voice barely above a whisper. She turned to look over at him. “Sorry, it’s probably distracting,” she said as the last of the notes began to fade away; she had only turned it three times and the music could only last so long.

“I mean, there was always some question of whether or not you can actually write,” Daniel bit his lip hard and shook his head at this, trying not to laugh. How did she always have that way of cheering him up and being nice to him even when he had been a cold jerk only moments before? It was a serious gift on her part, one that few people had he was sure. "Well, I'll prove that I can, then," he muttered, watching as she lifted her head from his shoulder to reach into her pocket for... a music box? He leaned toward it slightly as it started to play. He smiled, then shook his head as she said it was distracting. "No, no. I like it. I wish I had something like that," he found that the music comforted him too, and he turned back to the notebook. He tapped the pencil against it for a moment before starting to jot some things down... Hogwarts is full of crazy emotions, but it's not worse that Durmstrang. Pretty much the same amount of teen angst. My best friend- He couldn't write all the details about that. Not for Irina or anyone else to see. He looked back to Ri, "Nik and I had a heart to heart today... let's just say it was emotional," he tried to chuckle but it came out as more of a choke. He cleared his throat, turning back toward the page, "maybe I should write about something else..." he closed his eyes and listening to the music box for a few seconds before starting to write again. This time it was just a list of random words, seemingly having no meaning. Brown. Red. Soft. Cold. Loud. Loud. Very Loud. Brave. Broken. Beautiful. British. Piano. Louisa. Soccer. Quidditch. Bludger... He went on like that for a while, just scribbling away. He lost track of time until his eyelids got heavy... Irina Rose Krum
