▲ There were numerous problems that accompanied social anxiety when it came to classroom situations. One of the major problems, at least for Cordelia, was that she dreaded the days where she was asked to perform a spell in front of the entire class. Today had been no exception. She had never thought of herself at being particularly skilled in Charms, but apparently Professor Zhu either thought differently or really, really liked to torture Cordelia while watching her simultaneously squirm and stiffen up in front of the rest of the students. There was no way she could ever tell a professor no to participating in class, so she always obediently listened in the hope that she would be skipped over for someone else the next time. It wasn’t that she was incapable of performing the spells either; she spent endless hours trying to hone most of them, hoping that showing some kind of skill would help her disappear into the others just like her. Yet it never seemed to work. Despite knowing a lot of the spells by heart, the intricate motions and verbal incantations that went along with them as well, the piercing eyes of the professor and other students was simply too much for her. The spells always turned out as jagged, rough, imperfect forms of what she was actually capable of doing, and almost always resulted in a giggle or two from the crowd. It was one thing if her classmates were silent or at least applauded her for attempting it, but the whispers and laughs behind her back as she awkwardly stood up was almost always too much for her to handle. Without that, she might have been able to actually perform a spell flawlessly. But today was not one of those exceptions, and Cordelia left Charms class feeling less than satisfied with how things had turned out. She knew the spell and had really tried her best today, but there was just enough pressure that she messed things up again. Exiting the classroom at the back of the line, she hiked her bag over her arm, the weight of it not being kind on her shoulder at all. It was starting to seem like luck wasn’t on her side today at all; first being called on in class, and now barely able to keep her bag up for some reason. Maybe she was just tired. Getting called on was always exhausting and put way more strain on her than most things did. The thought of all those faces staring at her as she failed over and over again haunted her nightmares and she had a feeling that this was something that would never go away. Shambling down the third floor corridor slowly, Cordelia eventually came upon the statue of the humpback witch. She had never thought much of the stone sculpture, other than that it was creepy, yet oddly comforting at the same time. Pausing to stare at it for a few seconds, she made the decision that heading back to the common room was going to take too long, and she was too tired to do that right now. Cooling off after class and destressing needed to happen first. She had already experienced too much stimulation for the entire day, and forcing herself to walk down another three flights of stairs was too much to think about right now. Practically dropping her bag onto the floor next to the statue, Cordelia leaned up against it and slid down to the floor, almost as fast as her bag had. This was nice. She hoped nobody would come along and disturb her peace and quiet, and if they did, it wouldn’t be for a while. Right now was decompressing time, and being interrupted during that was awful. Taking a deep breath, Cordelia leaned her head back against the cold statue and closed her eyes. @open! ● 647 ● Corner Of My Eye by Roo Panes MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Okay, so Lily had never been that could at counter spells. So what!? Well, it would have been pretty handy right now because someone had decided to jinx her with a rather nasty little number. She was forced to only talk in repetition, as in repeating the last thing she heard. This made it hard to ask for help because she couldn't say her own words! She tried using the last word someone said to get it out, but it was just not working. Plus, she had no idea who did this to her. She was just leaving class whens he felt a tingle in her back and suddenly she was like this.
She was marching down the hall on the third floor, which was the least crowded right now. Just a few small groups of people passing through. She was on her way to get to the Hospital Wing, when she heard someone beside her say, "if she tries something like that again so help me-" which caused Lily to call out, in an angry yet pleading tone, "so help me!" The people kept walking and she stood there, growling, clenching her fists. She didn't even notice Cordelia and the statue beside her when she let out a scream, stomping her foot hard on the ground.

▲ What had to have only been a few minutes, Cordelia slowly opened her eyes to see a rather large group of students walking by. She groaned as the noise that accompanied it got even closer and closer, and then finally drifted off into the distance. Their voices still echoed back down the hallway to where she was sitting though, so it was like they were still standing right next to her. All she wanted was a little silence, but it was starting to look like that would be impossible in the middle of a hallway. Resting her head back on the statue once again, Cordelia made her mind up and decided that she was better off trying to relax in the common room. As she thought this over one last time, she heard another voice saying something about help. She wasn’t one to normally interject in somebody else’s business even if they needed help. The pressure of having to do well under those circumstances was equivalent to her classroom situation. That never fared well when trying to give aid to someone else. Peering around the corner of the statue, she spotted the person that she assumed the voice had come from, and the girl looked upset. Bag over her shoulder once again, Cordelia was going to attempt to sneak around the girl as best as possible. She liked to think that she could be quiet enough that she practically disappeared, some kind of skill that was possible because she hated drawing attention. Attempting to step around the statue and behind the girl so that she could slip away towards the stairs, Cordelia jumped backwards and let out a loud yelp. The girl had screamed and stomped at the exact moment that she had tried to run away! Slightly shocked by what had just happened and still frozen in her place from where she had landed, her bag slipped off of her shoulder again, landing with a thud on the ground. “Ummm…” she started, unsure if the other girl was even aware that she was standing next to someone else. “Are y-you o-ok?” Cordelia was hesitant to get any closer, the other girl had screamed rather loudly and that stomp looked like it was a force to be reckoned with. The yell had to have been loud enough for someone else to hear it, and hopefully they would come to help out. She just wanted to get away before any attention was turned towards her again. Lily didn't even hear Cordelias yelp over her scream, but soon she opened her eyes to see another girl, asking if she was okay. Lily growled, shaking her head, "okay," she repeated, but she was shaking her head. Trying to say she wasn't okay. She didn't know how to explain this! She couldn't even write it down. She'd tried. This jinx was impressive, she had to give it that.
She didn't feel bad for startling the girl, even though she looked scared witless. She didn't have time or energy to be worried about her feelings right now. She just had to get this fixed! She reached for her wand and pulled it out, holding it out in front of her in both hands flatly, to show that she wasn't going to start a fight. Hopefully that worked. Then she turned to the side and tried to act out someone shooting a jinx at her.
She mimed walking with a happy smile on her face and then pretended to be the perpetrator, snickering and tossing a spell ahead (she just acted it out, though) and then pretended to be herself again, being hit by it and then frowning. She looked at the girl with wide, pleading eyes. Did she get any of that!?

▲ To say she was confused was an understatement. The girl growled at her. She actually growled! Taking a half-step back, Cordelia stopped as the other girl started shaking her head and responded, saying she was okay. What was going on? First she was screaming, stomping and growling, now she was shaking her head like there was something wrong, but also saying she was fine. Cordelia didn’t know what to believe. Obviously this girl was frustrated over something, but she couldn’t exactly tell what it was just by looking at her. For some reason, curiosity took her over and she really wanted to figure out what was going on here, even if it was somewhat terrifying. As long as the girl didn’t start yelling and stomping around again, then Cordelia figured she’d be fine trying to solve this strange puzzle of a person. Before Cordelia could ask another question, the girl pulled her wand out. That was a little too much for her to deal with. She was willing to give this weird character the benefit of doubt up until this point, but she was acting strangely and pulling her wand out rather aggressively. Seeing as it didn’t take much for Cordelia to get scared, especially by odd people, she immediately backed up a few more feet and started to bend her knees so she could pick her bag up again. Whilst doing this, the girl suddenly held the wand out, as if to show she wasn’t going to use it. Cordelia was still confused. Grabbing her bag just in case, she slowly inched her way back up to where she had just been, the bag going back over her shoulder once again. Then the strangest thing happened. The girl started miming out some kind of scene. Perplexed by what was going on, Cordelia could feel her head slowly tilt to one side, trying to understand what the girl was trying to tell her. It looked from the onset that the girl was acting out some kind of battle, or what seemed like one. There was a good character, which Cordelia found out by the end of the skit had to be the girl based on her reaction, who was happily walking along and then apparently got hit with a spell by another person. Was she trying to tell her that a spell had hit her? The girl looked completely fine. Then again, she had been yelling and looked frustrated, even if she had said she was okay. At least she knew that the girl didn’t mean any harm now. That was what worried her the most. After finishing the act and showing that she had gotten hit by the spell, the girl looked at Cordelia like she wanted her help. Did that mean she wanted her to fix it? Sure, she liked healing spells and all, but she had no idea what was wrong. Even then, she still didn’t know if the girl was playing around or actually in need of help. “Did you get hit by a s-s-spell?” Cordelia finally forced out, clutching onto her bag tightly, just in case the girl did something crazy again. Immediately speaking up before the other girl could say anything, Cordelia continued. “I can help if y-you want. I’m good with c-counter curses.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Lily started to bounce excitedly on her toes as the girl spoke. She figured it out! Oh, lily could just hug and kiss her right there! but she didn't, she knew she already scared the daylights out of her a moment ago by pulling out her wad. "Hit by a spell!" Lily repeated, jumping up and down now. "Counter curse! Counter curse!" she agreed. She re-pocketed her wand and held her arms out to her side, a pleading look on her face. She bit down on her lip hard... how was this girl supposed to due a counter curse if she didn't even know what was wrong?! Lily dropped her hands to her sides after only a few seconds, feeling just as discouraged as she was a moment ago.

▲ Apparently offering the girl help was the right thing to do, and there was an immediate shift in her attitude when Cordelia did so. Seeing her jump around in excitement was kind of nice. She had seemed so…angry and upset earlier. Doing as a little as possible and making people happy was a nice feeling. As she jumped around, the girl repeated that she had been hit by a spell as well as saying counter curse twice. It was a little strange, but Cordelia didn’t pay it any head because the girl was clearly excited that someone was finally helping her. She had screamed rather loudly earlier for help, and no one else had showed up. Finally putting her wand away, which was still making Cordelia nervous, especially during the jumping parts, the girl suddenly looked sad again. What on earth could have happened that fast? Obviously it had something to do with the spell that had been put on her. Then Cordelia realized it too. She didn’t know what the spell was, so that meant she couldn’t fix it. The expression on the girl’s face was enough to tell her that it was one of the nastier types too; the kind where she wouldn’t be able to say what it was. That explained the whole charade sequence a few minutes earlier. Cordelia stood still for a second, staring at the other girl and trying to figure out was exactly wrong with her. The hex, jinx, or curse, whatever it was, had a built in system to keep the person cursed from saying anything about it. Unfortunately there were quite a few like that, and running through all the counter-spells one by one would take the rest of the day. Physically, it didn’t look like the spell was affecting the girl, other than maybe her attitude, unless the excessive energy and quick flicks over to anger were normal for her. She couldn’t figure it out. If there was no way to tell just by looking, it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Cordelia didn’t need to know what the spell was called, but knowing what it was effecting would lead her in the right direction. “W-w-what part of your body does the spell affect?” She bumbled out. The girl was really active with showing what had happened, so she had figured phrasing the question that way would get some kind of physical movement indicating what it was causing problems with. Cordelia slid her wand out from her bag, getting it ready just in case. She wanted to help the girl as soon as she figured out exactly what was going on with her. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Lily watched as the girl realized their predicament, but her smile came back when the girl asked the question. "The spell affect," Lily pointed at her mouth with both hands. Dang, this girl was pretty smart! Lily would have to get to know her more once this ordeal was over. Plus, she was cute, so Lily really had no choice but to befriend her in one way or another. Lily only hoped the girl would be able to figure this out! As her hopeful savoir drew her wand, Lily stepped forward again, nodding and pointing at her mouth. She repeated the girls words again, slowly, and exactly as she said them, “W-w-what part of your body does the spell affect?” she hoped that by being so obvious about repeating her that the girl would be able to figure it out. Lily's eyes were still big and pleaded and she moved her hands away from her mouth eventually, figuring the girl had at least gotten the point that this was the spell effected place. cordelia regan smith

▲ Cordelia hoped that her question about where the spell had affected would work. The girl seemed to be pretty good at indicating everything that had happened thus far, so she assumed that it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility for it to continue. Even if that didn’t happen, they’d figure out a way to remove the spell eventually, whether it was by Cordelia’s hands or one of the nurses at the Hospital Wing. They were extremely talented individuals there, and she looked up to them, similar to her own mother, who worked at St. Mungo’s. Those that dealt with fixing magical messes deserved the utmost respect of other witches and wizards. Other than aurors and other high level security workers in the Ministry, Cordelia was sure that healers at the hospital and the nurses at Hogwarts were some of the best out there. Aspiring to possibly be at that level someday, she knew that helping this girl was just another step down the right path. Figuring out the counter-curse was the tough part. Once that was done, she’d have no problem removing it from her new friend. Upon asking the girl where the spell was affecting, another large grin took over her face. Cordelia assumed that was the right question to ask, immediately, the girl started pointing at her mouth wildly. She already knew that the spell prevented her from saying what it was, but it seemed like it had to be more than that, otherwise it would be a pretty useless spell to cast on someone. Still pondering what it could possibly be that it affected the girl’s mouth, she spoke up again, this time repeating the entire question Cordelia had asked her. Verbatim. Stutter and all. It took a second for it fully click too, since she had just disregarded the repetition as the part of the spell that prevented the girl from saying what it was. “Does the spell make you repeat things?” Cordelia inquired quickly, positive that this was the answer. She hoped the girl would react exuberantly, like she had earlier, if that was the correct question to ask. She had an idea of what the spell, or jinx rather, could be, but confirmation was needed first. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

When Cordelia guessed the spell correctly, Lily let out a squeal of delight and ran forward, clasping the girls shoulders and shaking her. "Spell make you repeat things! Repeat!" she was so happy that the girl had guessed it! After a moment of happy jumping, she released the girls shoulders and pointed at her mouth again, "spell?" as if asking if the girl had any idea what counter spell would help her in this situation. She seemed smart enough up to this point and probably knew what to do! Lily felt bad for a moment that she was being a little overbearing, but that feeling didn't last very long. She was actually a damsel in distress this time! Where was Grey when ya needed him? This girl was doing great, though, and would have her fixed up in no time, hopefully!

▲ Bingo. Correct answer. Right again. She was on a roll today. Despite her blunders during class earlier in the day, Cordelia seemed to have been getting lucky. Someone must have slipped Felix Felicis into her pumpkin juice this morning, because she had never managed to get this many things right in a row before, maybe even in her entire life. It was a surreal experience that was for sure. So surreal in fact, that she didn’t even care that the other girl had jumped towards her and grabbed onto her shoulders, whipping her around in excitement. She had gotten pretty caught up in the whole thing too, a smile erupting on her face for figuring out all the pieces to the puzzle. At least, almost all of the pieces. There was still one left and Cordelia was reminded about it when the girl pointed to her mouth again and asked if she knew the spell to stop it. The elusive counter-jinx to stop her from repeating every single thing said within earshot. The smile that had so quickly appeared on Cordelia’s face disappeared. The fact was, she didn’t know what the counter-spell was. She hadn’t even heard of one that could make people only repeat words. “I-I’m sorry. I don’t kn-know…” Then, as luck had it, she happened upon another brilliant idea. The Charms classroom was right around the corner. As long as Professor Zhu wasn’t still in there, she could sneak in and find a book on counter-spells. Surely she would have one in there right? They weren’t exactly charms, but anti-spells were protective ones, and she assumed the two things were pretty much the same, at least in theory. Holding up a finger to the girl, Cordelia hoped she would wait by the statue. “I’ll be right back.” Turning on her heel quickly, she jogged back to the Charms classroom and popped the door open. Luckily it was unlocked. “P-Professor Zhu?” Cordelia asked cautiously as she stuck her head into the classroom. Nobody was in there. Perfect. Knowing exactly where all the books were stacked, she went over to them and started digging for anything that remotely resembled a title that would have jinxes or counter-spells in them. After scanning over a few different books, she grabbed a couple different ones and ran out of the classroom and back towards where the other girl was hopefully still standing. Happily seeing that her new friend was still there, Cordelia tossed one of the books at her and sat on the ground, motioning for her to do the same. “The c-counter-spell might be in one of these b-books.” Flipping through the index of the first book in her pile, she didn’t spot anything that looked anywhere close to jinxes or counter-spells, so she tossed it aside and grabbed the third book that she had taken from the classroom. “I’m sure it’ll be in one of these...” She trailed off, now fully concentrating on the content of the book she had stuffed in her face. Lily frowned as the girl said she didn't know. But then the girl seemed to get an idea and Lily stared hopefully at her before she ran off. Lily waited, though she'd never been good at waiting, and tapped her foot until she got back. She didn't dare move from this spot in case the girl could in fact figure all of this out. She was getting impatient though when suddenly the girl was coming around the corner again with books and Lily rushed forward to help, taking a few from her.
Then they began their search. "Might be in one of these books," Lily repeated, leaning forward to search through a book herself. She was no good at this stuff, though, and got frustrated quickly and easily. She slammed the book shut and folded her arms angrily, looking up at the other girl for guidance.

▲ The other girl’s search through her book didn’t last that long either. This was starting to look like a very futile situation. If they couldn’t figure it out from one of these books, Cordelia was going to have to take the other girl to the Hospital Wing and explain what had happened to the nurses. They would definitely know, or at least know where to look. But she had too much pride to give in that easily, and kept flipping through the pages of the second book she had picked up. This one was looking extremely promising compared to the first one she had opened. Then she found it, or at least something that seemed to be described as such. The other girl slamming her book on the ground made Cordelia lean backwards, as the shock of the sound and finding the counter-spell simultaneously was a little too much stimulation at the same time. Turning back to the book once again just to make sure she was right, Cordelia skimmed over the section on it again. It looked like it was about a repetition jinx, so that had to be it, right? “I think this is it. C-can you look?” She handed the book over to the girl, crossing her fingers that this was the right one, and they could finally talk like normal human beings. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

The girl thought she had found something and Lily leaned forward eagerly to take the book. Yes! That looked like it! Lily pointed at the passage and nodded. "Found something!" she repeated excitedly, "take a look," she pushed the book away again and held her arms out to her sides, completely trusting this girl to perform the counter spell. Lily was also prideful in the sense that she didn't want to take this to the nurses. Students dealt with pranks and jinx all of the time without getting adults involved. Plus, this little journey with her new friend had actually been fun, kind of making this all a little worth it.

▲ The look of surprise on the girl’s face was enough to tell Cordelia that this was the correct spell. Perfect. Now all she had to do was perform it, and the girl would hopefully be back to normal. No pressure or anything. The book came back into Cordelia’s hands and she placed it on the ground in front of her, reading over the incantation one more time in her head and once out loud to make sure she had it correct. Pulling her wand back out of her bag once again, she watched the girl put her arms out like she was ready to be engulfed by whatever the counter-jinx looked like. Biting down on her lip, Cordelia pointed her wand at the girl, having to grab her wand hand with her other one to keep it straight. As long as she pronounced everything accurately and without stuttering at all, it would go smooth. The more she thought about it, the more it would make her mess up. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she ran the counter-jinx incantation through her head one last time before opening her eyes again. She had this. Her goal was to become a healer one day, so this was simple. Repeating the counter-jinx just as she had memorized it from the book, a flash of blue light shot from her wand and into the girl. Was it supposed to do that? Cordelia dropped her wand and quickly picked the book up again to check. It was. The blue light meant everything had gone perfectly. Just to make sure, she looked up at the girl to see anything had changed. “Did it work?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
