Maria's heart had stopped for a moment at the feast when they'd announced the Champions. She kept running over it in her head, over and over again, the Hogwarts Headmaster's voice echoing through her thoughts.
Elias
She hadn't believed it at first. Even when he stop up and left the Great Hall she hadn't believed it. She hadn't spoken to her cousin since their fight several weeks ago. It'd become increasingly more difficult to avoid him as time went on, but she'd been to stubborn to apologize. Now that she was forced with the reality of her cousin, and the closest person to her, being put in such a dangerous situation did she realize how stupid all of this was. She was happy for him, no doubt about it, but she was scared that he might get hurt...
Maria sat by herself at the edge of the lake, staring absentmindedly at the water. She just didn't know what to do. To keep on ignoring him. To act like the fight never happened. To apologize. God, she was terrible at this sort of stuff! She ran her fingers through her hair, letting out a deep breath, before laying back on the grass and staring up at the starry sky. Most the students had gone back to the ship, or carriage, but she hadn't. She was waiting for Elias to get back. To finally walk out of the Castle and head to the ship.

@maria <3 Elias was still in shock. He was Durmstrang Champion. It was him. And although he knew it, he felt like it really hadn't hit him yet. Maybe it would hit him later, and he was sure he'd want to be on his own in that instance. Directly after meeting with the Headmaster and his 'mentor' you could call him, Samuil Delov, Elias had owl'ed his mum. She had responded immediately, excited but scared for him. Fortunately for him, she had planned on coming to England and staying until the year was over.
He was exhausted, mostly mentally exhausted, and he just wanted to sleep. All of this stuff going on in his head gave him a headache, and he wanted to get a good night's sleep before all of the crazy happened. Elias exited the front doors of the Hogwarts castle, his maroon colored robes billowing behind him, but he stopped short when he saw a particular curly haired girl sitting out by the Lake in front of the Durmstrang ship. Elias took a deep breath, shut his eyes, and let a small smile fall on his face.
Walking up to her, his hands in his robe pockets, he tilted his head, his own curly hair falling over his shoulder. "Maria, why aren't you in bed?" Elias could hear the parties throughout the castle going, but he wasn't sure if there was such a thing inside the ship for him.

Maria didn't hear him coming. She'd been staring to intensely up at the stars, trying to decide what to do and say that he managed to sneak up on her. She knew it was late, but she didn't feel tired. Elias might, but he'd had a long evening. She couldn't imagine what he'd felt, or thought when he heard his name. Just that, when he'd passed her, he'd touched her shoulder, the first contact they'd had since the fight. It was probably that small contact that ripped away all her remaining defenses.
Hearing her name was enough to bring her back down from the stars and down to earth. She sat up, turning her head to look at him. Her expression didn't change from.... well neutral. That was odd, to not be able to read anything in her expression. She was usually so flamboyant, wearing her emotions on her sleeves, it was never any doubt about what she might be feeling. "I'm not tired." She mustered as a response, before looking back at the dark water. "I.... I also wanted to talk to you. Have a minute?"

@maria <3 Maria sat up and looked at him and Elias' eyes widened slightly, his eyebrows raising. This wasn't...normal. She was not showing emotion, and it made his eyes narrow slightly as he was now very curious as to what was wrong with her. Maria was usually quite open. So when she asked if she could speak to him, he nodded and sat down next to her, letting his knees bend slightly so they weren't outstretched.
She was now looking at the water. Elias was wondering if this was all just because he was chosen and had made a point to touch her when he walked by. It was kind of a sucky feeling, not having Maria around the past few weeks, and knowing the only reason she was talking to him was because he was picked to do something dangerous. But then again, dangerous things made people realize how dumb they were being. "What did you want to talk about?"

Maria let out a sigh as he sat down next to her. Just him being there felt better. Like, as if everything had returned to normal. She hated not talking to him. She hated ignoring him. She hated not being around him. Maria hadn't thought she cared so much about her cousin until he was suddenly gone. He was one of the only important people left in her life.
As he spoke, she pursed her lips, gaze still on the water. "I'm only going to say this once, okay? So listen up, you aren't hearing it again." She finally looked over at her cousin. "I'm sorry." She spoke slowly, just to make sure he didn't miss it. She hadn't said that word in so long. "I'm an idiot. And selfish. A complete pain in the ass. Insensitive. And yes, possessive and violent." She felt like vinegar saying all that, and he'd know it. She didn't like admitting her faults. But she knew she needed to. "I'm a terrible listener, and I've been an absolutely horrible friend to you."
Looking away, she ran her fingers through her hair. "So.... I'm sorry."

@maria <3 Her voice was snippy, and it made Elias raise his eyebrow at her. He hadn't done anything to her in the few weeks they hadn't talked so he was curious as to why she was so aggravated already. He literally had only said a few words to her. But, as soon as Maria spoke, Elias knew why she was acting this way. His eyebrows fell, but a smirk slowly appeared on his face. This was a part of Maria that Elias had never had to see before, he had never even needed Maria to say sorry to him before, and it was actually quite amusing although he appreciated her trying.
"I'm glad you finally realized everything I tried to tell you, Maria. And..." He took a deep breath. "And I accept your apology. But I don't want to have to ever yell at you like that again, Maria. I didn't like it as much as you didn't." Elias' voice was stern. He knew he'd need to figure things out with Maria and his siblings; he needed them for this tournament. He really, truly, needed them.

It took all of her self control not to make a face as she saw that smirk. Oh, she just wanted to slap it off his face! But no, she was apologizing, and she wasn't about to do anything that would warrant even more of an apology! It was almost like he was making fun of her though! But, to be honest, it was probably a pretty pathetic apology. But considering she never gave them, it was a dang good one for her!
She nodded in agreement as he spoke. "I don't want to fight with you, Elias. You're-" She stopped, cutting herself off. Was she going to say it? She swallowed, keeping her eyes far from him. "You're one of the only people I care about." She paused for a moment, trying to work up the courage to continue. It was strange, realizing that she didn't have enough courage to just flat out tell him everything. That even though he was the closest person to her, she still kept him as in the dark as everyone else. "I don't want you to get hurt, but I know that I've hurt you too many times." She sighed, shaking her head. "And.... I want you to know that I'll always be here for you. No matter what. I'll try to be better about how I act around people. And I promise, no more secrets. I'll tell you everything I've kept to myself until now, and I won't do anything completely psychotic without telling you before hand."

@maria <3 His smirk disappeared quickly at her words. It was bittersweet, as well as completely unnatural, to be hearing these words from Maria. She usually wasn't one to speak this way, so real and honest. But Elias knew it would happen someday, he just didn't think that someday would be so soon.
Elias tilted his head at Maria. Things she's kept to herself? What did that mean? "Well, I think you'll always be psychotic but I'm glad you'll try to be more calm around people...I need to have them in my life Maria, I need all of them..." His voice was low, and he didn't need to mention their names. Maria was smart enough to know he was speaking of his siblings. "And what do you mean what you've kept to yourself?"

Maria lay back down on the grass, staring up at the night sky and all the stars over head. She let out a sigh. "I know." Elias's family had gotten a lot bigger, a lot faster. And as much as she hated to admit it, family was family. He needed them in his life. It was hard to accept, and to swallow, but she'd have to. Because Elias was important to her, and she wanted him to be happy.
His next question was met in silence for a moment. She bite her lip softly, before closing her eyes. "You know I've never been.... open about my past. I don't tell anyone. But.... I don't want to keep any more secrets from you, Elias." He knew she was 'from' Brazil, but she'd told him near nothing about her parents. He only knew what his mother had told him, which wasn't much. He didn't know how she ended up with their grandparents. He didn't even know much about their grandparents in general.

@maria <3 Maria laid back down and Elias tilted his head, looking at her. He had missed her quite a bit. Not just her in general, but her voice, her laugh, even those fiery hands at times. Her company was something that Elias had constantly had, and now, the past few weeks, he'd been walking around alone trying to figure out his family and everything as well as worrying about the tournament.
As Maria spoke, Elias took a deep breath. He hadn't expected this. Yes, he knew she was from Brazil but...Elias had never even questioned her past or anything about her parents. It wasn't something that he needed to know, at least he thought he didn't need to. Maria was Maria, and her past wasn't going to change his opinion on her. Elias lied down himself, his head to the left to look at her face. "I never expected you to keep secrets from me, Maria. But if you aren't comfortable telling me, I understand." The last thing he wanted was for her to feel pushed.

It was probably her parents and grandparents that had made Maria so.... secretive. Even to her own family. Romani, traditional Romani were secretive and superstitious. And her father had been on the run, so he'd been extremely guarded. Maria, due to all these circumstances, had guarded her secrets possessively, ever since she was a child. And the older she got, the more withdrawn she'd become. "I keep secrets from everyone. Even those closest to me. Your mother.... She's different then the rest of our family. She.... trusts people. She doesn't think the worst of everyone she meets." It was no secret that Maria admired Elias' mother. Greatly admired her. Given a choice, Maria would have spent every summer with her and Elias, but her grandparents would never allow it. She turned her head to look at him. "I don't trust anyone, Elias. Except you."
So, she told him. Told him everything she'd withheld. About her parents. How her mother died in a bus accident. how her father committed suicide. How she was shipped off to their grandparents in Sweden at the age of seven. How their grandparents were strict and traditional Romani. and how they hadn't intended to enroll her in school. How they'd planned on at least getting one decent marriage out of her, since both their parents had been failures. How the only reason she'd been permitted to go to Durmstrang was because she severely hurt (burned) a neighborhood boy that had been bullying her, and the local magical government had forced their Grandparents to enroll her, or they'd place her with a family that could keep Maria in line.
Strangely, after telling him all this, she felt.... relieved. As if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She hadn't looked at him the entire time she spoke, just stared up at the stars. And now, finally finished, she let out a sigh.

@maria <3 She only trusted ... him? Elias looked back up at the sky, not at her anymore. He kind of assumed that, but he never actually put any belief into it as she had never said anything like that before. He'd never really asked about her home life much either, not wanting to prude into things she didn't want to tell him. But, Maria spoke, and Elias listened. He always listens.
He would always listen. To anything Maria said. He loved her, through and through. Elias rolled over onto his stomach, and propped himself up as soon as she was done speaking. Her facial expression looked weirdly calm. Eli knew Maria didn't cry much. But while explaining all of this to him, he was shocked to see no tears. Maybe she had cried enough and had come to terms with everything that had happened. Elias reached his hand up to brush her curls away from her face. "Thank you for telling me all of that, Maria. Are you...are you okay?"

Maria wouldn't cry. Not after all these years. Not about her parents. Or about being uprooted and moved halfway across the world. If it hadn't happened, she never would have met Elias. That, and she just wasn't the crying sort. In the six years they'd known each other, the first time Elias had ever seen her cry was during that fight they'd had. Not even during their first year when she'd been bullied just as badly as him but hadn't begun her violent streak yet. She hadn't started lashing out until their third year, when she realized that she could use her mother's gift against other people to get them to back off.
She turned her head to look at Elias when she felt his hand touch her hair. "I'm fine, Elias. I just don't want to lose you too. I've already lost everyone else I care about." She explained. She knew she was.... possessive. Overly possessive. Especially of Elias. Hence her behavior with his sisters... And their classmates.

@maria <3 Elias knew Maria would never lose him. But apparently she thought he might, and he wasn't sure why. Yes he had been extremely angry a few weeks ago, but he couldn't recall saying anything about never speaking to her again. She had done something without him around, that caused other issues in his life. And while he was still extremely angry about it, he knew he couldn't not talk to Maria. Especially after already being chosen as champion for Durmstrang. It was something he'd need her for, even if he was angry and hurt. He will always need Maria.
"I don't think you have anything to worry about anymore, Maria..." Elias crossed his arms and put his head on top of them, staring at a blade of grass in front of his eyes. He took a deep breath. "Whatever you said to Jamie, well, she told me I couldn't be in their family anymore. Not unless I got rid of you. So...I can't get to know my siblings." Just like you wanted. As much as Elias wished to say that to Maria, and as much as he was hurt, he couldn't say it. The emotions he felt would all come pouring out, and that wasn't what he wanted to do right now. He wanted to be excited.

Maria didn't really know why she was afraid she'd lose Elias. Maybe it was just because'd lost her parents. Because she'd lost her entire childhood, and he was the first one she'd let in after so many years. Because... Because she couldn't handle losing anyone else. And she knew that Elias didn't have to put up with her. He had a wonderful mother, and if he so chose, he didn't need to put up with his crazy cousin. She was afraid that someday, he'd realize that.
Maria slowly looked back at him as he told her she didn't have to worry about that anymore, an eyebrow raising. When he continued... She felt her blood boil. Okay, yeah, she'd sort of asked for this to happen, but Jamie had told Elias that he couldn't be in the family? "Couldn't." She hissed the word out slowly. Her hands felt warm, but they hadn't ignited yet. "So, it's her decision? What, they can't think for themselves, they have to follow her ever whim like dogs?" Maria hated Jamie, she decided. Hated her. They'd only spoken a few times, but Maria knew she hated the blonde. "Let me guess, she told you that I was a psychotic bitch, and that I was trying to kill her." She rolled her eyes. "Bet she left out the part about pulling her wand out and trying to stun me right in the face. I didn' touch her. Physically or magically, just so you know."
Maria sighed, and ran a hand through her hair. "I don't want to talk about that right now. It will make both of us angry, and I don't want to be angry."
