This was it, the night Irina had been both anticipating and dreading for weeks. Tonight, they'd announce the Triwizard Champion. Irina had seated herself next to Anna; if it wasn't to be her, she wanted Anna to get chosen She knew her friend had it in her to compete and win. As the two other schools' champions were announced, Irina held onto Dan's hand tightly, perhaps more so than she probably should have. She gave his hand a sympathetic squeeze as Elias Greyback was chosen for Durmstrang; she was relieved though because if she got chosen, then they would have competed against each other and she doubted that'd be healthy for their growing relationship. Finally, the goblet gobbed out the name of the Hogwarts champion. Irina gripped her friends hand under the table.
Molly Annaliese Weasley.
Irina felt a joy swoop through her as she engulfed her friend in a hug along with some of the other Gryffindors. The cheering was deafening coming from the scarlet and gold table. She watched as the redhead went off to the side chamber for instructions. She let her pressure on Dan's hand loosen as Headmaster Longbottom spoke. She was prepared to feel the disappointment; her parents would tell her it was alright but she knew her mom would be disappointment. But the feeling never came. What she felt was....relief. It swept through her, and as the Heads of the schools disappeared, she looked over to Dan. "Can we get out of here?" she whispered. She didn't even want to think about what the emotions of the room were doing to her boyfriend.

Dan already has a headache, and the champions hadn't even been announced yet. Dan sat with Irina, his hand clasping hers as her headmaster moved toward the Goblet. Irina's grip was tight, but he didn't mind. The nerves, excitement and anticipation rushing through her was sending him on a high, and he was dizzy with that and the other emotions around him. His free hand was on the table, clenched in a fist. He just needed to hear the names and then hopefully get out of there. He focused on Irina, soaking her emotions in like a painkiller.
Then, the Durmstrang name was called. Dan grinned. Apparently that guy was Adrians half brother so... Whatever he was to Dan, he didn't know. Irina squeezed his hand and he just smiled softly, actually kind of relieved. He had more important things in his life now...
Then it was time for Hogwarts and Dan leaned forward, eyes on Irina. She'd be crushed if-wait. Joy? What? She moved to give Anna a hug and he just blinked. What was going on? Then she was back to him and she took his hand and that relief shocked him more than anything. He blinked, staring at her when she suggested they get out of there and he nodded. He thought all the other emotions in the room would be really painful but... Her relief and her hand being there was enough to focus him, and he almost felt... Peaceful. Which was strange considering all the emotions seeping toward him from the other people. Lily's excitement normally would have had him screaming too, it was that strong.
But no. He only heard her words. He just simply nodded and stood as the feast commenced and the people around them started to eat. "Lead the way," his voice was low but for some reason he knew she'd be able to hear it. Even in the chatter and the chaos.

Irina smiled with relief as she heard Dan murmur assent to leave the Great Hall. She stood up, never letting go of his hand. "I know a place," she said softly as she led him out of the hall. Away from the emotions, away from the feelings of everyone else. She would never be an empath, but being with Dan she was beginning to learn what kind of situations would affect him worse than others, and this was certainly one of the worst he could handle. Gently tugging him along, she led him up the stairs, never speaking. She knew where she was going; it had crossed her mind that the room would be quiet with all of the students still buzzing about in the Great Hall. She waited for the final staircase to move into place before finally speaking. "You'll feel better up here; hopefully nobodys emotions can carry this high," she said with a soft chuckle.
They walked up the stone spiral staircase of the Astronomy Tower, and Irina opened the door for him to the circular room. The wide open windows offered the most beautiful views of the grounds, including both the Beauxbatons carriage and the Durmstrang ship. "I come up here sometimes to be by myself after a bad dream; it's funny that people don't automatically think of it, but I just love gazing out at the grounds," she told him, crossing over to one of the windows and looking out. She didn't really understand why she was so calm, or didn't feel the disappointment over her not being chosen, but she was at peace with this; it was something so out of her control she couldn't have done anything about it anyway.

Dan nodded as she said she knew a place. He found himself nodding a lot around her, considering he just agreed with almost every single thing she said. He didn't mind, not even a little bit. He allowed her to lead him and stayed silent, just enjoying her hand as the emotions of the Great Hall withered away behind them. He liked the silence between them at the moment. He liked hearing her breath, watching her move, taking in every second of her. He smiled as she suggested taking him away from all the emotions. She was always taking care of him in that regard, and she was getting better at it. He breathed a sigh of relief once they were in the open air, all the emotions of the castle completely gone now.
She spoke and he kept his eyes on her. He realized he hadn't taken them off her since the names were announced. He wasn't planning on taking them off her any time soon. He didn't even look out the window that she brought him too. He just nodded, still silent. He felt like he was slightly broken in the sense that he couldn't speak and didn't know why. He was just so surprised that she wasn't feeling terrible right now... why wasn't she?
He finally found the words to ask, "why are you so relaxed, Irina?" his voice was soft, but his eyes intense.

Irina looked slightly taken aback when he asked her why she was so relaxed, mostly because he used her full name. She contemplated him for a second, head tilted to the side. “You know, I’m not really sure,” she said slowly, thinking about what had just happened. She knew she had wanted to be selected as the Hogwarts Champion so badly; it was an opportunity to make a name for herself within the Krum family. But as she thought of it more and more, she realized how much less important this tournament meant to her. Because of Dan. “I think over the past few weeks, I’ve been coming to a subconscious realization that there are far more important things in life than being Champion for a Tournament that has caused so many deaths and injuries, the like,” she finally said, her eyes never leaving is. She took a step closer and took both of his hands in hers. “Specifically, you are more important to me than winning some Tournament, in case I wasn’t being clear,” she told him, giving him a shy smile. “Sure, eternal glory would be nice, but it’s not this,” she admitted, squeezing his hand. “Plus, think about how much damage I would do to you if I was champion - you’d probably dump me within a week,” she said with a chuckle. She couldn’t really believe she was admitting this to him, but she wasn’t embarrassed of how she felt. Was she quite ready to say out loud those three words? No, probably not. But she already felt them, insane as that was to admit.

She began to answer his question and Dan listened intently and quietly, never interupting her. He felt that tug in his gut when she said that he was more important. That eternal glory would be nice, but it wasn't this. There were words swimming around in his head. Words he wanted to say but he knew he couldn't. He didn't even really know how to form the words with his mouth. Not yet.
His eyes were still trained on hers this entire time, and he was glad she hadn't called him out on it. She made a joke about him dumping her because of her mad Champion skills, and he chuckled as well. Her calm emotions mixed with his own was making him start to feel a tad loopy, like when you're half awake. But he was fully awake and fully present here. Right now. With her.
He simply nodded at all the words she said, his smile soft. He didn't open his mouth to speak. He was afraid that he would say something that he... didn't know if he could say. He wasn't stressed about it, though. Just cautious.
Finally, after a few breaths he opened his mouth, but he closed it again. He laughed, then spoke, "I feel the same way, Ri," he said simply.

Irina’s stomach was in knots after she said her piece; she feared she had maybe said too much. But the words came flowing out of her as easy as could be before she could stop herself. She was a passionate person in general, but she was scared to come off too strong. Especially to Dan, who on top of her being one of the first people he’s allowed this close, was also an Empath. He could feel everything she felt, good and bad. She shivered as a cool breeze rippled through the Astronomy Tower; it was colder outside than she had imagined. Finally, the knot released itself as Dan spoke, and said he felt the same way. It was a simple, short sentence but it was enough. She gave a small nod, and smiled. “Good,” she said softly.
She stood there for a moment, then another breeze rippled through the Tower and she shivered again. “Dan? Can...can you just h-hold me really tight right now?” she whispered, her words tumbling out quicker than she could process them. She didn’t make the first move to close the gap between them, rather she waited for him to. She wasn’t sure if she was just trembling from the cold anymore, or just being so dangerously close to saying something she didn’t think they were ready to say.

When she shivered Dan would have moved toward her, but he was too busy thinking way too hard than was good for him. She nodded and smiled and said 'good' and he smiled back. Then another breeze came and he shivered tool. She spoke, saying just his name first and then asking if he could hold her. It was a whisper, but that was all he needed. He nodded once before stepping toward her and wrapping his arms around her, pulling her close and tightening his grip. "Just tell me if I'm about to crush you and probably kiss me too, that'd be a good idea, so I don't talk anymore," he spoke just as fast as she did, whispering too as he looked down at her face less than an inch from his now. He still was a little jarred by the fact that he was letting someone be this close to him, and him to them, but this was Irina here. He had told her that she wanted to feel everything she felt and that was true.
If that wasn't Dan's way of saying I love you without using those three specific words, then he didn't know what was. he had never wanted to feel anyone's emotions before.

Irina let out a soft giggle as he asked her to tell him if she was being crushed as he pulled her close. She wouldn’t because she liked being held tight by him, and she knew he’d never crush her. Her arms snaked up around his neck as their faces grew closer and closer. “Okay,” was all she said, and then she was kissing him. There was a time to talk, and a time to not, and right now it was the latter. She put all she wanted to say out loud but was afraid to into this kiss, feeling the world melt away and just leaving the two of them behind. She thought she felt the wind blow again but she no longer felt cold; Dan always had a way of making her feel safe and warm.
They stayed just as they were for awhile, until Irina broke away with great reluctance; breathing was a necessity though. She contented herself by snaking her arms under his outer robe so that her arms were still covered by the blood red of Durmstrang. She rested her head on his chest and sighed peacefully, still not saying anything. Sometimes she had learned, when it came to Dan, just being silent and focusing on her emotions was what was better than the spoken word. It was like his own language, and she was excited to be learning it with him.

Dan breathed in the entire moment for as long as possible. Her hair, her peace, her warmth, all of it. He was just as reluctant when she broken away from kissing, but was fine with her resting his head on his chest. There was even more silence and even more breathing in of the sensations going on around and inside him, inside her, for who knows how long. Curfew would soon be up, though, and he didn't want to put a damper on the night by keeping her out too late. He sighed after what seemed like eternity, kissed the top of her head, and squeezed her one last time. "Come on, darling," he said softly, gently pushing her back so as to create that unwanted distance between them, "we should get going before they ban us from ever seeing each other again," he joked. But he got lost in those eyes again and kissed her one more time, okay maybe more than one more time... Irina Rose Krum

Irina laughed softly as Dan gently pushed her back, only to pull her close once more. She didn’t complain though, she’d never complain about spending more time with Dan. She had noticed he had taken to calling her darling too; while Rina wasn't one for nicknames, it felt nice, normal to hear it from his lips. Pulling back for just a moment though, Irina checked her watch. “Nine thirty, we have a half hour,” she whispered, gently pulling him for another kiss, then took his hand in hers. “Come, I want to show you this sight, which believe it or not was the reason for coming up here,” she said, leading him towards the wide window that overlooked the grounds. The sky was a purplish black, but the nearly full moon shone brightly in the sky, reflecting over the lake and gave the grounds a soft, silvery light. She sighed, taking in the beauty of the night. “We should come up here during the daytime sometime, you can see every treetop; sometimes you’ll even see some of the...birds coming out of the trees after being disturbed,” she told him, stopping herself before she said thestrals. She hadn’t disclosed to anyone that she could see them now; only Hugo Weasley knew about what they had witnessed the day of the kidnappings. Shuddering slightly from something other than the cold, Irina pulled Dans arms so they wrapped around her waist and leaned back into him, just staring out at the grounds. A lone thestral then burst from the treetops, and Irina tensed before she could help herself.

So, they still had a half an hour? Strange, it felt like eternity had passed by while they were kissing there. She suggested going to see something that she came up there for and he nodded, of course, agreeing. He'd let Irina take him anywhere, really. She led him to the wide window and he smiled, looking out it, even though he didnt' want to look away from her. But she seemed pretty set on showing him this and he didn't want to not go with it. He nodded at the words she said about the trees and the birds. He looked up toward the sky, though, at the stars. "Hey, you okay?" he asked after she shuddered, allowing her to pull his arms around her waist. He rested his head on her chin, "what's on your mind?"

Irina paused for a moment, before forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Nothing, it’s nothing,” she said, then sighed in defeat. It was no use pretending that she hadn’t tensed up at the sight of the thestral, and no use hiding it now. “A thestral just took off from the treetops, and I’m still not used to seeing it,” she told him, pausing for a moment to let it sink in. Nearly everyone knew that you could only see a thestral if you’d seen someone die, and Irina had seen just that back in April. “During the kidnappings, one of my friends had to defend herself against the kidnappers, and she ended up killing him. I saw the whole thing, so now I can see the thestrals.” She wasn’t scared of the beasts themselves; they were quite harmless albeit not the most attractive thing to lay eyes on. No it was more about the memory it brought up whenever she saw them; the screams, masked men flinging curses everywhere, the man her friend killed dropping to the floor like a stone. She closed her eyes for a minute, trying to block out the images from her mind.

Dan knew better than to believe that it was nothing, so he waited until she spoke again and told him. Even if he wasn't an empath he would have been able to tell that something was wrong. She explained what it was and he tightened his hold on her, pulling her close. Her emotions were a bit scattered now, and he could tell she must have been reliving that moment. "What do they look like? The Thestrals," he asked softly, in hopes that maybe paying attention to detail would distract her. He felt terrible again that he hadn't been there last year during all of that, at least to look after Rip and Tania. He knew all the girls, and Nik, were fine now, but he still felt like he had let them down, just because he went to another school in another country. He hated every second of that. He kissed the spot behind her ear gently as he waited for her to respond, just hoping his arms made her feel safe, at least a little.

Irina relaxed a little as Dan tightened his grip on her. It made her feel safe, protected from any sort of harm that could come her way. She just hoped he knew that she’d do the same for him. “At first glance, they’re a bit scary looking. Black, skeletal horses with leathery wings,” she began, leaning her head back so it rested in the crook of his neck. “But when you have my curiosity and go in for a closer look, you begin to realize they have this….morbid beauty to them. They look a lot like Pegasi from Greek mythology, if the winged horses were black and looked nearly emaciated,” she said with a small chuckle. It was definitely helping for her to explain what they looked like. “They’re kind creatures too; people obviously are wary of them, but in a way they sort of help you accept what you’ve seen. They really like it if you bring them raw, bloody bits of meat too. I read that this year; so I decided to try it and see what happened. They’re shy at first, but then become gentle and happy to be around you almost. There’s a whole herd of them, babies too.” She finished talking and just closed her eyes. She’d never be able to erase what she saw that day, but with Dan at least she felt more ready to accept it.
