As if Grey had suddenly grown a backbone within the past few weeks, he began speaking to both of them very sternly and intensely. Addilyn had not been expecting that, especially not from him. What he was saying was all true of course. They were siblings, they had to work through everything going on. But, that was all up to Claire. Addilyn had tried talking to her. She had tried figuring out what had happened with Claire and why she had been acting so sullen and hurt. That didn't work out the way she had hoped, as Claire had really made Addi angry with what she said to her. And while Addi felt there was some truth to it, she also had an even bigger feeling that Claire was lying. She kept her eyes trained on Grey's, not even taking a glance to look at Claire. At least, not until Grey was done speaking, and Claire opened her mouth.
Addilyn Slater's mouth dropped open. Her eyes flashed with anger. The whole 'Hufflepuff' demeanor the young girl usually had disappeared, and was full on Slytherin mode. Addi moved closer to her sister, her own voice barely above a whisper, and her words sounding like a hiss. "That is complete and utter bullshit, Claire. You know it, and we know it. I already spoke to Professor Jakebson, so just spit it out already." Addilyn took a step back towards Grey and shut her eyes, taking in a deep breath. Slowly, she opened them to look at her sister. "We know there is something wrong. There's no reason to hide anything from us, Claire. So stop running away."

The Monsters walk among us Grey really wanted to be the one to call Claire out on her excuses, but Addi had beaten him to it. He knew she wouldn’t stay quiet for long; it wasn’t in her nature anymore. If anything had taught him that, her punching him in the face in front of everyone in the Great Hall a few months ago had done it. Obviously the youngest Slater’s facial reactions and body language were enough for him to catch on that there was more to the story between his sisters than he had been made aware of. Addi was refusing to look Claire in the eyes as she talked too. She was beyond pissed off. Sure, she had been pretty angry at him for ignoring her and not telling her what had been happening, but this was on a completely different level than he had ever seen before. Apparently the bond those two had was far different than he had with either of them. What did Professor Jakebson have to do with any of this? That part was still bugging him as Addi spoke for both of them, stating that they knew there was something wrong, or at least going on with her that she wasn’t telling them. Watching Addi move closer to Claire, he had a feeling that he would have to pull the small blonde off of their older sister in a second, but it didn’t happen. Instead she backed up towards him again, still clearly frustrated. Looking back and forth between his sisters one last time, grey also sighed. “There you have it. Could have been said a little…” he looked at Addi, “…nicer, but Addi is right. We know something is wrong, you just need to fill us in on what that is. Please.” Grey moved forward a little so that he could be halfway between the two of them. If Addi jumped at Claire, he was going to do everything he could to stop it. The last thing he wanted was to have this pushed off more. There was something getting to Claire, and she needed to let it out. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Claire was not expecting Addilyn's aggressive reaction. It was such a fast and unexpected shift that it took her off guard, her eyes widening slightly in surprise. Those eyes widened even more when she went in to say she'd already spoken with a Calex. She knew he wouldn't have told her anything to personal, Claire had already spoken to him about it. Obviously he'd upheld his end of the promise and hadn't told Addi anything. But how had Addi even known to talk to him?
The Auror held her ground as her sister got right up in her personal space, not flinching or retreating despite the shocked look on her face. Addi eventually stepped back and Grey put himself strategically between the sisters. Her gaze returned to normal and flickered to her brother as he more politely asked the same thing Addi had. Claire didn't respond. She didn't want to have this conversation period, but definitely not today of all days! This was supposed to be to celebrate their birthdays, not interrogate Claire day!
Stop running away.
"It should have been me, okay?!" Claire didn't know why that was the comment that finally made her snap out of her stupor and invoke a reaction. It wasn't a good one though, the words harshly coming out before she could stop them. Internally she swore up a storm. She hadn't meant to say that, but she'd already opened that can of worms and couldn't close it anymore. She let out a slow and deep breath, her eyes closed. "I was the one that should have died that day on the platform, not Casey. He wouldn't have even been there if I hadn't asked him to be there." She opened her eyes, staring intensely at her siblings. "Casey... Calex's brother, pushed me out of the way. It should have been me."

Addilyn gave her brother a small glare. She was shocked he was being so calm in all of this. He had told her that he had spoken to Claire previously about what their own issues were, but he hadn't really specified exactly what they talked about. She rose an eyebrow as he stepped in between them and crossed her arms over her chest. Of course she was angry, but Addi wasn't going to stop Grey from doing what he thought would be best, just as he wasn't with her. She just hoped that the three of them could settle everything themselves.
However, Claire's reaction was not one Addi had been expecting. She knew that...what was his name, Casey? Casey, who was Professor Jakebson's brother, had died. And Addilyn also knew that Claire and Casey were close. But she hadn't assumed that her acting in such a way was because she had, well, seen him die. Addilyn suddenly felt the rush of anger leave her, but she was still confused. Why couldn't Claire just tell them this? Why did she have to hide it so much? Addi's arms fell, and she walked around Grey to stand in front of Claire, staring at her. "You should never die, Claire. That's not why you're here. You don't live to just die, and..." Addi took a deep breath, not wanting to hurt her sister's feelings, but knowing it needed to be said. "Things happen for a reason. You lived for a reason, you just have to figure out what that reason is."

The Monsters walk among us So Casey was Professor Jakebson’s brother. That’s right, Addi had mentioned something about him being an auror too. Initially, Grey had taken that to mean they were assigned partners or something of the sort. But would that partnership illicit a response like this? He wasn’t sure. Claire was still a young, impressionable auror, and he assumed that Casey had to have been the first person she watched die, as grim as that sounded. More importantly, why hadn’t she said anything to them about that day? Had the madness and confusion of that day been enough that she decided to repress all of it, not thinking that it mattered to them? Addi spoke up once again before he could. Too caught in his own thoughts, he seemed to always lose to her in that regard. It wasn’t like he could have said it any better himself. Nodding in agreement as his younger sister said that Claire shouldn’t die, and there was a reason behind her living and Casey dying. Again with the morbid thoughts, but Addi was right. In his mind, having Claire alive was more important than Casey was. She’d probably come to terms with that someday. Maybe expecting that to happen so soon after was too much. He didn’t know, he’d never actually seen someone die in front of him. Even though he had stepped in between his sisters to prevent any physical fight from breaking out, Grey absent mindedly let Addi approach Claire. At this point, it seemed like his earlier motions weren’t necessary. He didn’t move from his spot though, just in case. Still looking back and forth at them, something was still bugging Grey. Claire had said that Casey wouldn’t have been there had she not asked him to. “Why’d you ask him to be there then? Normally the train unloading isn’t that bad, and more than one auror isn’t really necessary is it?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Claire exhaled, the breath shaking as she tried to stay calm. To swallow up all of the feelings her siblings were bringing to the surface. She didn't want to face them. She wanted the feelings to stay where they were, buried and locked away. Because if they stayed there, she'd never have to face them. She'd never have to accept that Casey was gone. She'd have to confront all the feelings. And she didn't want to. Her hands clenched as she stood there. She was now avoiding her siblings eyes. Maybe they'd just drop it in she refused to look at them.
Things happen for a reason.
That was Addi's answer. Happen for a reason? She thought there was a bloody reason behind Casey dying to save her?! Claire sucked in a sharp breath, a sharp pain in her chest making it hard to breath. Why did she have to say that? Her mind was reeling, trying desperately to come up with a response to shut down the rest of this conversation before it got worse. Before they had the conversation she'd desperately wanted to have that day on the platform but been dreading ever since. Thankfully Addilyn hadn't pushed why he was there. Just that it'd happened. Unfortunately it didn't get past Grey.
Claire's heart stopped at his questions, and all the color drained from her face. Her whole body felt heavy and sluggish and she reached up to pull a silver chain around her neck from under her shirt. She always kept it hidden under her clothes, so no one would ask questions about it. Hanging from the chain... was a ring. She'd worn it on the chain since that day, unable to wear it on her finger. Now her biggest 'secret' was out, and she felt painfully exposed. "We weren't there as Aurors.." She barely managed to say, her voice so quiet that she almost didn't even realize she was speaking in the first place.
She finally managed to look back up at her siblings.

Grey finally spoke, and Addilyn narrowed her eyes at her sister as she thought about the question herself. She didn't know what the job requirement was at the trains, so she wouldn't have realized that it wasn't too difficult of a job for that to even make sense in her head. But as soon as Grey had said that, there was different parts of the story that were beginning to piece together inside her head. But that couldn't be. That couldn't have been the situation. Addilyn would've known. Claire would've told her...they told each other everything.
And Claire pulled out her necklace. And there was a ring. And Addilyn took in a sharp breath. And Addi looked at Grey, and then she looked back to her older sister. Claire spoke, and she finally got it. It finally all made sense.
Her heart slowly broke. Addilyn had wished Claire would have told them. She wished she would've known, wished she could've done something to help. But she couldn't. Addi wondered if their parents knew, but right now that wasn't what she should be concerned with. Addilyn could never imagine what Claire was going through, could not imagine ever seeing Edmund die right in front of her. Addi walked the last few steps towards her sister, and gently brought her into a hug, tears welling up in her eyes. "I love you, Claire Bear."

The Monsters walk among us Grey could feel all the blood drain from his face as Claire finally answered the question that had been bugging him and Addi for the longest time. Now he understood why it had been so hard for her to say anything; why she had reluctantly played it off as just work stress, or other the problems he and Addi had been causing her. Hell, they had probably made things that much worse, acting out all the time and constantly pestering her for details on what her life was like now. He had no idea how Addi had gone about it, but he had practically said she needed to find something to care about other than living up to their parent’s expectations. And she had. But now that was gone, and he had been constantly driving the stake into it over and over again without even realizing it. Grey had always liked to think that he could read and understand people, something that his former upperclassmen in the newspaper had taught him for when he conducted interviews. Yet it was starting to seem more and more like that wasn’t true. At least not with the people or things that actually mattered. He had already succeeded in screwing things up with Addi this year, and was only able to fix it because of Edmund, and he was sure his actions around Claire had only made things worse for her too. He watched as Claire held onto the ring that was chained around her neck, and as Addi broke down right then and there. The only thing he could think about was how insensitive he had been; regardless of the fact that he was unaware of what had happened. Maybe if he hadn’t tried to rebel or act out things between them would have been different and he would have already known. And then there was another part to it too. Claire had brought Casey to see them at the station when they were arriving. Had things been different between all of them, maybe they would have already been made aware of it, and then the two of them wouldn’t have had to show up there that day. There were too many what ifs though, and grey couldn’t find the words to say anything right then and there. Instead, he stood watching his sisters silently, arms crossed tightly as he tried to process everything once again. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Claire wished she hadn't told them. Well, sort of told them. She hadn't outright said it. She hadn't said that she'd been in love with Casey, hell she still was. She didn't tell them that he'd proposed. She didn't say that she'd wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. Her actions had made all those points clear. Casey had been the one person that made her feel like she could be.... well normal. He'd never had the same expectations as her parents. Hell, he hadn't really had any at all. He'd just wanted her to be herself, and that was good enough for him. He'd accepted and loved all of her quirks that she tried her hardest to hide from her family. He'd definitely known her better then her parents and Grey did, and in some ways more then even Addilyn. She hadn't had to try to live up to any standards with him...
Claire swallowed hard as Addilyn pulled her into a hug and said that she loved her. She could hear the emotion in Addi's voice, and while she couldn't see it she was sure Addi was starting to tear up. Claire's own eyes stayed devoid of all emotion. She wouldn't cry, she had to be the strong one. She wouldn't let them see just how broken she really was. Her arms remained limp at her side, not returning the hug as she forced her eyes closed. Stay strong. Stay stoic. "Me too." She managed to say softly. She did love her siblings, both of them. She just didn't want them to see her like this. Struggling to keep her head afloat.

Grey didn't move. He didn't speak. Addilyn didn't expect him too, but at the same time she did a bit. He had helped her out in different ways when she had been crying and upset, and it doesn't even match up to what Claire was upset about. And maybe that was because her and Grey had always had a much closer relationship than him and Claire, or maybe he was just uncomfortable with doing so or didn't know how to react. Either way, Addilyn was going to try her hardest to be here for her sister.
Claire wasn't crying, although she looked like she wanted to. She looked plain exhausted, and it made Addilyn sad. Her sister was never like this, ever. This must have been hitting her hard, and Addilyn wasn't sure that Claire had really spoken about it before. Claire said a simple two words to Addilyn's 'I love you', and Addi gave her a sad smile and squeezed her tightly. "You can cry, Claire. You can let it out, you don't need to act like it doesn't bother you..." Addilyn's tone was gentle and hopefully understanding; her sister needed to deal with this, and with family.

The Monsters walk among us The hardest part about all of this wasn’t the fact that he was starting to feel personally responsible for Casey’s death; who had accompanied Claire to the station to meet him and Addi. It was Claire’s reaction to telling them about everything. She had barely said anything, simply shown them the ring on the chain. That was enough to tell him everything, but at the same time it made him wonder why she hadn’t reacted the way most grieving people did. Obviously telling them was difficult, she had kept it from them for months now. Holding all of that in couldn’t have been easy. Having a grandparent or old family friend die had happened once or twice in his lifetime, and all three of them had been through that, but nothing like this had ever occurred. The look on Claire’s face, the lack of emotion, was slightly disturbing. Was she that broken by all of this that she couldn’t even react properly? “Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” Grey swallowed. That hadn’t come out the way he had intended. He didn’t want to make it sound like he was blaming her for all of this. There was no way they could feasibly or legally change any of that now, so there should have been at least some point that she should have been able to tell them about it. “I-We know you feel like you need to be strong for us, to push us in the direction that we need to go, but holding that in will kill you.” Grey took a deep breath. “And we can’t lose you.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Claire didn't want to cry. She didn't want to let out the emotional storm raging inside her, swirling about chaotically. It'd almost become... normal. Almost like the grief had become a part of her. As if it was the only thing holding her together anymore. She finally managed to move in her sisters arms, to return it. Sort of. At least with one arm. The other remained limp at her side. "It's fine, Addi. I'm fine." she felt fine, for the moment she said it, despite knowing deep down she wasn't. But she wasn't going to cry or break down in front of her younger siblings.
Grey managed to speak up and Claire's gaze flickered from her little sister to her brother. Why hadn't she told them? Claire's expression was still as void of emotion. "None of you had known before, and telling you after his death wouldn't change anything." she stated, almost as if she was reading off a fact. What good would it have been to tell them then? Not only that... "Our parents... they knew I'd gone out with him a few times, but they didn't know it was serious. They thought he was a distraction." she didn't want to prove them right, or have her parents say it was for the best that he was gone. She didn't want to hear them tell her to get over him.

Addilyn felt Claire give her a partial hug back. And while it felt good and made Addilyn slightly happy, Claire's words are what gave her a short burst of anger. Addi moved her body back, holding Claire's shoulders and looking her in the eyes. "Stop it, Claire. Stop. You're not fine, it's not fine, and it never will be fine if you don't deal with it. Why do you think this world gave you an amazing little sister and an annoying little brother?" Addi gave Grey a small smile. "So we can help you and be there for you."
As Claire spoke Addilyn crossed her arms, listening. Well of course their parents didn't know, otherwise, Addi was sure she and Grey would know, too. All of this had been inside of their older sister for how long? And who else knew besides their Professor? "Is Professor Jakebson the only person you've spoken to about this, Claire?" That couldn't be good; he had lost a brother, and he had to grieve just as much as she did.

The Monsters walk among us He couldn’t help but shake his head as Claire said she was fine. That was a stupid thing to think, because it was pretty obvious that she wasn’t. Grey was about to point that out, but Addi beat him to it again. She seemed to be able to put her thoughts together into coherent sentences faster than he could. The last few years of working at the school paper had taught him to watch and listen more than to talk immediately, articulating his words instead of spouting out whatever came to his mind first. Addi seemed to be able to do both. She was forced to live in the house known to be built on cunningness after all. He continued nodding his head as his younger sister talked. That was exactly what he was going to say anyways, although a lot more forceful and meaningful then whatever was going to come out of his mouth. “Of course it would change everything. You’d be able to get it all out instead of holding it in. You’re only going to make it worse…” That was one way to tell her to move on. Grey wasn’t sure where he fit in with this conversation anymore, seeing as Addi had pretty much said everything he had wanted to get out. At least they were thinking the same things. He couldn’t help but think that their parents probably wouldn’t have said anything to either of them even if they did know about how serious Claire was. Maybe Addi would have been dropped a hint or two, but disturbing his “studies” would have meant he was going to stay in the dark until the very last moment. Sticking his hands in his pockets, Grey decided to continue to listen. That was pretty much all he could do at this point anyways. @jill2 & Claire Evangeline Slater 305 Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day sorry for the wait. i think this response is indicative of how much trouble i was having with it >.>MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Claire let out a slow, even, and deep breath as her eyes closed. She knew, deep down, that they were both right. That she needed to talk about it. Needed to get out these emotions. Needed to address the problem. But she didn't want to. Because when she tried it hurt. More than anything else she'd ever experienced in her life. And she'd rather feel nothing than that agony of admitting that Casey was gone and talking about it. Exposing her raw emotions to the trauma of having her heart broken. She couldn't do it. Couldn't face it. "I'm not ready to talk about it." She finally and softly admitted, her eyes still closed. No, she wasn't ready. For any of that.
Her eyes finally opened as Calex was mentioned. That same emotionless look in her eyes. "No. I've spoken to him, yes. But I had a psychological evaluation at the Ministry." That really didn't count, but she seemed to think so. They'd determined that her depression was at an acceptable level, and she was still fit to work in the field without being a danger to herself or her co-workers. "Calex lost a brother that day, but... he also knows what it's like to lose a companion." Calex had lost his wife. He knew how Claire felt even when she herself wasn't sure what she was experiencing.
