It was July, and the weather was unusually warm. Irina had hiked out to the woods by herself the day before and had found a cave that looked interesting enough to explore. She would never go alone though; not after what happened that summer she was nine. She could remember it clearly as if it had occurred moments before; she had fallen down the shaft of the cave in Germany by her mothers parents house and landed hard on a sharp piece of rock. It had pierced her skin and stuck fast; Irina had known better than to pull it out without something to stop the bleeding from what her father had taught her, but she had made the mistake of screaming for him when she fell. He wasn't that far away and he did hear her but so did the bats. Great flapping dark creatures; hundreds of them swooping and diving at Irina's head. Her heart had raced and she screamed and cried uncontrollably until she felt her fathers arms around her. He kept on telling her she was safe now, he had her. But Irina still had the scar on her side from the rock and she never would go in a cave by herself first for the fear of the bats ever again.
She hadn't counted on one thing though; Daniel Hoh, her brothers best friend. He had come to stay for the week to hang out with Nikolai mostly, and of course her father. She knew that Dan was a good Quidditch player from what Niko had told her; she wondered if Dan was trying to stay in Viktors good graces to get a good recommendation when he graduated from Durmstrang in two years time. Ripley and Tania had declined to come on their hike but Dan had decided he wanted to come; Irina was too proud to beg her father to not let him, so now the three of them were set to head off to the caves. Irina looked up from lacing her hiking boots as Dan came in the room. "I hope you don't plan on slowing us down today Hoh," she said causallly, issuing the challenge.

Dan was glad to be hiking with the Krums, of course. They were his second family and hiking was one of his favorite things to do. Things just seemed... quieter up here. Literally and just in his head. He would never pass up the opportunity for a hike, no matter who it was with. He entered the front room, all dressed and ready, only to find Irina already issuing a challenge to him. He scoffed, folding his arms over his chest. "Don't mess with me, Irina Rose Krum. I bet I could teach you a thing or two about hiking, kid. Don't lace your boots too tight."
He stood by the door, leaning against it as to look casual. He wasn't stupid. He noticed how good Irina looked now. They were the same age, and he'd always noticed how she was growing up. She was tough, tall and beautiful, and he wasn't blind to that. Still, he avoided thinking too much about it. He'd noticed early on his life that thinking to hard about how he was feeling made him sick. He didn't know why, but it was enough to stop feeling at all.

Irina made a face at him. “A word of advice, make sure your flys’ up,” she retorted with a smirk. She hadn’t actually looked there, of course, that’d be weird. But a made-you-look was always hilarious; James had fallen for it several times. They had tried dating earlier this summer, but trying to hold hands or even be alone together had proven impossible with the combined Krum and Potter family. Still, she had had her first kiss ever behind a tree; it was nice, but there was just nothing there spark wise. Irina hoped one day she’d meet someone that she felt that with. Rina noticed Dan was looking at her and she felt her cheeks tinge pink. “Well what are you standing there for? Let’s go,” she said briskly, marching past Dan and out the door. She noticed as she passed that there was this faint trace of stubble along his jawline. Wait, why was she noticing that on Dan of all people? Ew, that’s just...no. Irina made another face to herself as she started jogging towards the edge of the forest. She felt the excitement build, but also the underlying fear; she couldn’t help but remember the last time she’d gone into a cave. Still, she was older now, and taller. Clearly that wouldn’t happen again. @daniel

Irina offered her own advice and Dan scoffed, but didn't look down. At least he wouldn't until she wasn't turned toward him anymore. She was teasing him, he could tell by the way she spoke. He felt like he could read Irina, always had. He couldn't deny that she was easy to understand and easy to get along with. At least on the surface. He didn't realize he was staring at her until she spoke, then he turned away and followed her out the door, making sure to look past her and not right at her. He felt like she was keeping some kind of secret from him, which was strange... he cleared his throat, marching up beside her. "So, are you leading the way or am I, kid?"Irina Rose Krum

Irina wondered if Dan had looked down when she looked away; she would at least think he did for satisfaction's’ sake. She tapped her food intentionally as he marched up to her and cleared his throat. “Well seeing as how this is my house I am pretty sure I should lead, Hoh,” she started, a devilish smile forming at her lips. “However, if you think you know best, please feel free to go forth,” she said, gesturing down the path and bowing slightly.
She followed him down the path, noticing there were some low branches on the trees. Not being able to help herself, Rina got a running start and jumped onto one of the branches, landing gleefully on her feet. She hopped from branch to branch, feeling tall and powerful several feet above Dan’s head. As she jumped to the next one, the branch suddenly snapped and Irina helped as she leapt up and grabbed a higher branch as the wood tumbled down to the ground. She swung herself up and hopped over to the next tree before climbing down to the ground. Though she was confident in her capabilities, Rina needed solid ground for a few minutes there.

Oh, she pulled the 'this is my house' card. He grinned at her, shaking his head slightly. The girl had always carried such spunk, and Dan had always liked that about her. Niko had some pretty awesome sisters, Dan was lucky to have them. "Well, if you insist," he replied, going ahead of her. She was behind him now, which he realized he didn't like. It was harder to keep an eye on her that way. However, soon she was eunning agead and jumping onto branches and looking like a deer of some sort with all that leaping.
He felt a worried lurch in his stomach, but none of that showed on his face. Then, just as he worried, one of the branches snapped and he reached out as if to catch her, even though he was several feet away. She was soon back on the ground and he glared at her for a moment before letting himself smile softly, "impressive work there. Climbing happens to be one of my specialites," he mused. If she could do it so could he, right? So, he made his way to one of the trees himself and lifted onto one of the branches and climbed a little as well, though not too high. "All right, onward then," he said after a moment, swinging onto the next tree and using his hands to balance. He looked down at her, shrugging before coming back down. "Why don't you lead for a while?"

Irina made a face as he glared, but curtsied as he complimented her climbing abilities. “Oh really?” she challenged, one eyebrow raised as he hopped up into the tree. He crossed over to the next and Rina had to admit (though not out loud) that he wasn’t bad. “I can lead,” she said casually, breaking into a jog through the forest and resisting the urge to race Dan as he jumped through the trees.
They came to a clearing and Irina slowed to a stop, waiting for Dan to get down from the trees to see what she did. “Here’s the cave I found the other day,” she called to him, pointing towards a crevice opening next to a small stream She’d seen something glitter from just inside the caves mouth upon her first discovery, but flashbacks to the last time she’d entered a cave by herself had made her reconsider a solo trek. “Gentlemen first,” she said, bowing and gesturing that Dan should go in first. Her father was several yards back, taking his time; Irina wondered if it was on purpose, but why would he do that?

Dan followed her until they came at the clearing, her calling out to reference the cave up ahead. He moved beside her, still keeping at least a two foot distance between them. He had always kept his distance from people, though he still didn't understand completely why. He knew that he had some strange intuition, but it didn't fully make sense to him yet. He nodded at the cave, "did you want to go in?" he asked slowly, turning toward her.
Then she said 'Gentlemen first,' and he looked around the forest around them, "I don't see any here, so I guess I'll go," he joked, moving ahead. Her father was a ways behind, probably giving them space to just be crazy teenagers... or whatever. Either way, Dan moved forward in order to slip into the cave. Once inside, he turned toward the opening, "come on in, the dark is great!"

Irina waited a few beats before making a small face as he called out that the dark was great. Irina didn’t mind the dark per se, but in a choice between darkness and light she’d always go light. So she inched her way into the cave, gently placing her hand on the side of the wall while her eyes adjusted to the rapidly diminishing light. There was definitely something glittering on the walls; she could see the white and purple flashing dimly. “I saw something glittering-” she said distractedly, but then they turned the corner. “Oh wow," was all Irina could muster as the crystallized stalagmites glittered. Her mouth dropped open as she inched closer, putting her hand on one of the crystals. “It’s so beautiful,” she breathed, not helping a smile crossing her face. She looked around and saw several tunnels leading into the unknown. “Left, right or straight?” she asked, finally remembering Dan was also there, turning and looking over at him.

Dan hadn't actually noticed the glittering, at first. He was too busy worrying about whether Irina would go down an opposite tunnel or something and he'd lose her. But, he heard her voice clearly and turned the corner ahead of her, his own mouth dropping as the crystals appeared before them. He gasped, but then turned toward her as she spoke about how beautiful it was. He could tell that she really believed that, that she was in awe.
"Straight," he said, "you're dad will probably assume that we took the straight path if he comes in, or he may just wait outside but... straight it the safest bet," he said, gesturing ahead of him, "you first or me this time, darling?" he joked. He'd never called her that before, but it seemed oddly fitting for this little adventure in the dark.

“Straight ahead it is,” Irina agreed, taking the lead. “Dad will probably come into this room and wait until he hears something he finds unsettling,” she told him as she ducked her head slightly as she went through the opening. Though she scoffed at Dan’s nickname for her, she was glad it was dark and he couldn’t see her smile just a little bit. “Darling? Really? You couldn’t think of anything better?” she called back teasingly.
She walked forward, then stopped suddenly, suddenly very tense and alert. She heard something; some kind of rustling. “What’s that?” she whispered, gripping the side of the cave very tightly, her heart pounding painfully fast. The rustling grew louder, as did Irina’s panic; it became clear that the rustling was wings flapping, and a screech from the bats signaled their entrance. Irina wanted to flatten herself to the ground, or even curl into the fetal position and cover her ears, but she was rooted to where she was, eyes widening in fear. She could feel herself falling again, the sharp pain in her side where the sharp rock had stabbed her when she landed, crying out for her father. She tried to call for him now, but her voice had left her. She was helpless, completely and utterly helpless.

She took the led and he followed, hoping that her dad wouldn't actually hear anything unsettling... that wouldn't bode well for them. She scoffed at his little quip and she mocked him at his choice of a nickname. "What, you'd prefer... your highness?" he guessed, his voice dropping back into the low, flat tone that he often entertained.
He heard the rustling just as she did and tensed as well, taking a step closer to her. He felt her panic rising, or at least thought he did. He knew he wasn't really that panicked, so it must have been his intuition again. Then he saw the bat.
He surged forward catching her shoulders and moving her aside, flattening his back against the wall in order to hold her tightly against him, moving her out of the giant bats path. The moment his hands caught her shoulders he felt a surge of panic and fear, to the point that he shouted aloud before turning her to face him and wrapping both of his arms tightly around her.
He wasn't afraid of bats... why was he feeling so distressed? His heart was beating a thousand miles a minute, his ears ringing and his face was warm. He was still holding Irina, his arms wrapped around her tightly, but the feeling of fear was still there. He tried to shake it off but... he slowly realized that he wasn't the one feeling this way.
In a way he'd always known, that's why he had avoided for as long as he could remember. He'd even told Louisa that he felt strangely connected to people and how they were feeling, and she'd always protected him from that feeling. Now, however, in this moment, he realized it was more than he had thought. He was actually reading Irina's feelings.

Bats. Why did it have to be bats? Irina felt like she was in a trance; she felt hands on her shoulders, moving her body so that it was pressed tightly against the wall. No, she wasn’t against the wall, she was against Dan. The bat flew by and Irina let out a whimper as Dan turned her around and wrapped his arms around her. She clung to his shirt and buried her face in it as her limbs went from numb to shaking. She felt her eyes moisten but she didn’t look up - what if there were more bats? Slowly, she realized the threat had passed and she looked up into Dan’s face. She didn’t know what to say; should she thank him for moving her out of the way as she became a useless mannequin in the face of her biggest fear? She should, but she could make out the way he was looking at her in the dim light and words failed her again. She couldn’t read what he was thinking, but there was definitely something going on in that brain of hers. She looked down and noticed the two tear stains on his shirt. Absent-mindedly, she tried to wipe them off his shirt before realizing that it was useless. “Your highness would be just fine.” The words came out before she really thought it over; she wasn’t sure why she had decided at that moment to speak. Her shoulders began to shake and she was suddenly laughing. It wasn’t even that the idea of being referred to as your highness was all that funny, but in the rush of fear and panic, Irina felt that maybe laughter would just make her feel better.

Dan didn't notice at first that she had grabbed onto his shirt, burying her face there. she started to shake and he held her tighter, moving one hand to the back of her head to gently stroke her hair. He waited for her to calm, for her to realize that the bat was gone. Then, she looked up at him and he looked down at her, their faces only inches apart.
Now, if you asked Dan what he was thinking in that moment he would probably go to his grave telling you that he was just worried about Irina like he would a little sister, just like he would with Tania and Ripley. He would tell you that his heart beat didn't alter again at the sight of her eyes so close to his. He would tell you that he didn't start feeling his own fear, one that he didn't share with anyone.
She started to attempt wiping the tear stains off his shirt, her words oddly steady as she spoke about him calling her 'your highness'. He let off a bit of a scoff/laugh and then realized she was laughing too. Her emotions didn't match the laughing, though. At least not yet. He moved his hands to either side of her face, looking into her eyes, "hey, you okay?" he asked quietly, "your highness," he added.

Irina felt oddly comforted as Dan stroked her hair gently. She couldn’t remember a time where he’d even touched her, unless one counted playing tag when they were kids. He wasn’t half bad at this whole comforting thing. Then, she locked eyes with him - when did his eyes get so blue? She knew this wasn’t right; this was her brothers’ best friend, but she couldn’t look away. When he put his hands on either side of her face, she reached one hand up and rested it on his. She felt herself wanting to lean forward, to just close the inches of space between them, but she resisted with great effort. Brothers. Best. Friend. As in, off limits. She wasn’t allowed to want to kiss him, however tempting it felt at that moment.
He called her her highness, and she blinked, letting her hands drop to her side. “Yes, I’m alright,” she whispered, then cleared her throat and took a step away. “Thank you,” she added, pulling her braid over her shoulder so she could twist it between her fingers. “When I was younger, I fell into a hole after some bats scared me, and I’ve been terrified of bats ever since.” She could hear the rambling tone her voice had taken on, but more than just the bats was scaring her now.
