Irina made a face at him. “Hey, I am sorry if sometimes I get tongue-tied, I was focusing on not losing my balance!” she exclaimed, pretending to be indignant before laughing. She squeezed his arm lightly as he looked away from Phil and Andromeda; even as a regular person Irina could see how emotional the two of them back together were; she wasn’t surprised that it was giving Dan a headache. “Come on,” she said softly, tugging him so that they were further away from the reunion and more on their own with the glow of the fairy lights to guide them.


She giggled as he took a step back and told her the lighting suited her and looked down at her dress. It really couldn’t have looked better, she couldn’t help but think to herself. It had done its’ job on the ballroom dance floor too; Irina had felt like a floating princess dancing in her princes’ arms. It probably would not have even mattered to her if Dan had been a bad dancer; he made her feel like a princess just by looking at her like he was in that moment. “How what happened darling?” she asked curiously, taking a few steps so she was closer to him. She took his other hand in hers and laced their fingers together with a small smile.

Dan laughed happily again as she defended herself. He was glad she was willing to lead him away, too. He was happy, incredibly, to simply be in close proximity with this amazing person, and he still knew he didn't deserve it. He was grateful, though, because without Louisa and Nik he had been so alone but now that wasn't an issue anymore, except for the moments that he needed it like the past few weeks. Still, he was happy and grateful for Irina, more than he ever thought he could be with anyone.

He was happy to compliment her too, as he did. He also liked that curiosity that came from her at his words. She was closer to him again and he turned, starting to walk again to lead her further into the courtyard. "Well, just the fact that I was able to... be with you," he muttered this as if embarrassed.

Irina couldn’t help but blush a little at Dan’s comment as well; he sounded embarrassed though he had absolutely no reason to be. Every time they had been together had felt special, and Rina felt perfectly content with the idea of Dan being her partner from that day until her last day with no regrets. Perhaps it was strange to anyone on the outside viewing in; they had only been dating a few months, with things getting more serious just at the beginning of October. Irina hadn’t really had a boyfriend before, not including James, so in the beginning she didn’t know if there was some sort of timeline they should be following in their relationship. It took about four hours though for her to realize that she didn’t really care what other people thought; they’d known each other for years, so there was none of this ‘getting to know you’ dance most newly minted couples played. Besides, her father always said the minute he met their mother that he knew she was the one he was going to marry; their marriage was still thriving after nearly twenty years!


“It is,” Irina agreed out loud, nudging him gently as they continued to walk. “But I’m glad because it was amazing. You’re amazing,” she told him confidently, her arm resting gently in the crook of his elbow. She leaned the side of her head gently against his shoulder with a small smile as they walked. She’d learned quickly that Dan was not big on chatter, but the silences shared between them were never awkward or uncomfortable. They were just….them.

She was feeling some deep emotions, and all good ones as far as he was reading. His ears burned red and he chuckled, shaking his head as she went on to agree with him and then say that he was amazing. He was glad they were walking again, that was good for him. They were silent for a moment, which was perfectly fine. "Well," he breathed, continuing to walk but pausing his words. "I'm sorry about this month, Ri," he kept his gaze forward, "sorry about me." He really was, too. He wanted to be the best boyfriend ever, because that was what she deserved, but at least she accepted that he wasn't ready or able to be that just yet.

Irina listened to him speak, then stopped short. She let go of his hand and walked around so that he was facing him square on.  "Hey, look at me," she said.  She reached out and touched his shoulders with the tips of her fingers.  "There are some things one should be sorry for; like if you call me a bad name, or if you hit me.  Keep in mind though if you ever hit me you'd be getting hit back," she said, her lips quirking in a half smile.  "Do not be sorry for this; never be sorry for this.  You've done nothing wrong.  I know this hasn't been easy for you, but you will get through this.  I promise."  Her eyes shining, Irina dropped her hands and cleared her throat.  "Besides, sunshine and rainbows all the time is a bit boring," she joked, giving him a tiny smile.


Holding out her hand, she jerked her head for them to continue onwards.  They walked a little further in before Irina stopped again and turned to face him.  "Now then, it's Christmas, and I have a surprise for you," she said, her smile finally widening a little.  "Don't interrupt me, okay?"  she said, giving him a stern look before clearing her throat again.  "Ich bin bis über beide Ohren verliebt.  Dubist mein ein und alles.  Ich liebe dich; meine liebe wachst von tag zu tag.  Ich lasse dich nie allein.  Ich bin so froh, dass es dich gibt.  Es tut mir leid Lily hat mich gelehrt, nur romantische Sprüche."  Irina laughed; her German was improving, and it helped that she'd spoken it a bit as a child.  Still could be a lot better though.  "But the main one is this: ich liebe dich, Daniel Hoh," she finished, taking a small step closer to him.

She stopped and he looked up at her, making eye contact. As usual, he felt like the breath was knocked out of him on that eye contact. She always had so many words for him, and good ones too. Sometimes they were just words, but right now they weren't. He nodded, "well, in thats case, this'll be very interesting," he agreed, taking her hand as they walked on.

She stopped again and he turned to her with an eyebrow raised in confusion. "It's not easy to surprise me, Ri," he chimed in before she told him not to interrupt. Then... she spoke in German. It took him a second to get past the shock to actually register the words she was saying. He chuckled at the mention of Lily only teaching her romantic sayings and she was laughing too. She took a step closer, saying that she loved him, again in German. He shook his head, his eyes fixed on hers. "Well, thank God for Lily," then his hand found the back of her neck, her hair, and he pulled her lips to his.

Irina grinned broadly as she recognized the look on his face as one of shock. She knew full well it was not easy to surprise Dan due to his empathic sensory ability, but luckily he could only read emotions and not minds. He would have sensed probably a little nervousness at speaking in a language she hadn’t spoken in ten years and excitement to show off what she’d learned, but not what it was. “No, it’s not easy. But I did it anyway, so I hope you liked it,” she said, sounding proud of herself.

Then he was pulling her in closer for a kiss and as their lips met, Irina felt like the world was simply melting away. Nothing and no one else mattered in that tiny moment; there were no worries, no issues, no problems. It was just Dan and Irina. She wrapped her arms around his waist and deepened the kiss, sighing softly without realizing it. When they finally broke apart, Irina kept her eyes closed and rested her forehead against his. She didn’t speak, she didn’t want this cozy bubble she was in to be popped just yet.

Dan nodded, "I did like it," he said softly. It would be fun if Irina learned even more, then they could talk in secret. "I'd romance you by talking in Bulgarian but it's not that exciting, is it?" he joked. He knew plenty, of course, since he went to school in Bulgaria.

As they kissed Dan was well prepared to never end it, but it did, and they both kept their eyes closed and foreheads pressed together for several moments of silence. Until Dan felt a panicked presence behind them in the courtyard. He jerked away, spinning around to look as two aurors led a blonde girl out of the yard and back toward the entrance... he turned back to Ri with a raised eyebrow. "Well, tonight is certainly eventful."

Irina laughed when Dan offered to romance her in Bulgarian; the language was a bit harsh, but it'd be almost like being home if she heard someone else speak Bulgarian.  "Bulgarian is my native language, I would be happy to hear you speak it - I wouldn't laugh if you butchered a word either," she said in Bulgarian with a small giggle.   Still, it would be nice to eventually get back to trilingualism, and even nicer if Dan would help her with some basic sayings that wouldn't make a stranger blush.  She opened her mouth to ask when suddenly he jerked away from her.  Her eyes widened as they watched a blonde girl being hauled off by Aurors.  "She was in my house," she said dazedly.  She wondered what on Earth Simralin Jones had done to have so many Aurors taking her off the Hogwarts grounds, presumably to prison.  Or worse, but Irina would happily go with the prison option over that though.

She stepped back towards Dan and took his hand in hers.  "Come on, let's keep walking," she said softly, tugging on his hand so he fell into step with her along the path.  They walked in a pleasant silence for a few minutes, before they came upon a small clearing.  By the edge of the fairy lights, there was an ornate two seater swing, and Irina let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding.  "My grandparents in Germany used to have one like this; I used to swing on it with my sisters all the time," she said, then laughed.  "I think we almost broke it several times."  She let go of his hand and floated over to the swing.  She gathered up her skirt and plopped down onto the swing.  She curled one of her arms around the chains and smiled.  "Come sit!" she called out to him, patting the seat next to her.

"Fine then," he understood most of what she said, "you are a perfect erh... sunflower pumpkin," he frowned, "crap, what did I call you? I don't think I said it right. I usually only speak it for school stuff," he muttered.

"Well, she's not in your house anymore... she's really, really guilty. I can feel it," she shuddered. He was glad that she stepped back toward him first and took his hand. "Yes," he agreed, continuing to walk. Soon they came upon a swing and he turned to her with a grin. She let fo of him to go to the swing and sit down, her skirt making it disappear. He laughed, "noooo. Better idea," he said, moving around the swing to stand behind her. He grabbed the chains with both hands on either side and started to gently swing her, "we should get one of these," he said impulsively.

Irina could understand Dans Bulgarian perfectly even with the slightly German lilt, which was why she burst out laughing and didn't stop for several minutes. "Sorry.....I'm sorry!" she gasped, wiping her eye with her free hand. "I don't mean to laugh but darling, you just called me a sunflower pumpkin."

Still chuckling, she turned her head to watch as Daniel walked around behind the swing and began to push. She smiled widely and closed her eyes; the breeze coming from being pushed was cool but pleasant, a nice change from the heat inside of the Great Hall. She felt her heart skip a beat when Dan said they should get a swing like this; she paused for a second before turning back around to look at him. "That is an amazing idea!" she declared, looking up at the top of the swing. "But it has to be like this one, not one of those swings that has the canopy over it and is freestanding. It needs to be attached to a solid branch of an awesome tree so that it would hold for years and never snap, though I suppose we could just use magic to keep that in tact," she added, trailing off. She rested her chin on her hands, still watching him as he pushed the swing. "Will....do you think you could teach me basic German? You know, enough so I don't sound like a blithering idiot if I run into a German on the street," she asked him suddenly. She left out that she would probably run into a German or dozens if she came to visit him in Germany, but she knew that was implied.

She was laughing at him, which meant he said something terribly wrong. She finally explained what it was and he laughed too, "I meant to say beautiful princess! What!" He exclaimed, more laughter escaping his lips.

She turned around to look at him and said his idea about the swing was amazing and he chuckled, shrugging. "Of course," he agreed, "we'll obviously have a lot of strong trees. who do you think I am?" he joked. Then, she asked if he could teach her some basic German and he chuckled, "but bumbling idiots are cute," he laughed.

Irina was trying not to laugh, really she wasn’t. However, every time she thought of being called a sunflower pumpkin, one or two escaped her lips. “For future reference, it’s beautiful princess,” she said with a grin. Bulgarian was certainly not the easiest of languages to learn; she doubted she’d know it if her father hadn’t begun teaching her at aged three in order for her to be bilingual. Her mother had tried with German, but not until Irina was five, and by that point Bulgarian was sticking much faster than Dan’s native language. It had an entirely different alphabet too, so she didn’t think it was strange that Dan confused words at all. “I was just making sure you knew I only want the best for our tree swing. There can’t be any second rate trees that would break easily,” she said, pretending to scoff but foiling herself by giggling again.

Irina made a face as he protested that bumbling idiots were cute. “Fine, if you want me strolling down the streets of Berlin saying ‘I love you’ to everyone I meet, I suppose I could live with that too,” she said, batting her eyes teasingly. “I’m sure I will pick up a few people on the road,” she added with a lazy air, tossing her hair back and pretending to be hoity toity. She broke character though as she laughed again. “Or I could just say hello and people will just assume I’m weirdly friendly,” she added, shrugging as she smiled.

He made a mental note of how it was actually said, mouthing it to commit it in his mind. Then, as for the tree swing, she spoke about how she only wanted the best and not something that could break on a second rate tree. He nodded firmly, agreeing and chuckling a little as well. "I'll give you only the best trees," he promised, leaning down to kiss her lightly on the lips before standing up to push the swing again.

He chuckled again at her face when he said bumbling idiots were cute, and how she would just say 'I love you' in German to everyone. "We don't have to live in Germany, Ri," he cut in. Though, he really did want to. "If you pick up people just be sure they aren't going to kidnap you or something. But yeah, they'll probably just think you're a crazy friendly brit. Oh wait, you are!" he laughed.

Irina shrugged modestly. "I only want what is best, I don't think that's too much to ask," she said silkily, before grinning. She accepted his kiss happily, not turning around when he began pushing the swing again.  When Dan mentioned they didn't have to necessarily live in Germany, Rina felt her heart skip a beat again.  "I at least want to visit Germany, I haven't been since I was ten I think?  For my grandparents funeral," she reminded him.  Her mothers parents had died within days of each other; Elena claimed that her father had been too brokenhearted to live without his beloved wife, which Irina had found wildly romantic.  Who knew what was really the cause; probably the dragonpox her grandmother had come down with.  Still, the notion of them only having to be apart for a few days was sweet to think of, even if she did miss them.  "My grandfather used to teach me swear words in German when my mother wasn't around; I accidentally said one once and my mother panicked.  I was I think four."  Irina laughed at the memory; she had always liked her Opie better than her Omie and when she cried at their funeral the tears were more for him.  

"Oh my father would have a heart attack if he heard you calling me a Brit," she laughed; her father may have grown to love their home in England, but he was still a Bulgarian at heart.  "But I will take weirdly friendly over something else any day."  She reached over and touched his arm gently.  "I'd like to see where you grew up.  See if your trees compare to the ones in Bulgaria," she told him, squeezing his arm before releasing it so she could rest her chin on both hands again.
