“If we were dating, I might not have gone,” she retorted. And she was going to blame the fact that she was feeling warm on the alcohol. Yep, that was absolutely it.
The best way to describe Roxy’s reaction to Viola’s comment on her ambitions would be that she froze. Stopped dancing in a revelation because how had she not thought of that before? ”Oh,” she breathed. ”Of course!” She wanted to hit her head against a wall for being so blind as to not see that as a possibility before, because really, she knew enough about celebrity and the Quidditch industry thanks to her mum. There was so much work to do, because she had to get really, really good. And for all that she was probably ten seconds from being crashed into by someone, she was absolutely beaming.

“So if we were dating, you wouldn’t have cared about stepping on my toes?” Viola challenged. That was not going to the dancing lessons implied, unless if, because they were dating, Roxy would expect private lessons or something. But all of that was hypothetical, because Viola and Roxy weren’t dating. Nope.
Roxy stopped dancing abruptly, and Viola was forced to stop dancing, too. They hadn’t thought that their idea had been a particularly revolutionary one, but obviously Roxy was having some kind of unanticipated reaction to it. Viola jerked Roxy closer to them as a twirling couple nearly collided with her. “If you didn’t want to dance anymore, you just had to say.” Viola said with a smirk. “Let’s get off the dance floor so you can have your epiphany someplace less dangerous, hmm?”

“No, not that!” She was a little louder than she meant to be, but she really didn’t want to step on Viola’s toes. Really, really.
“I don’t not want to dance,” she said, pouting, but recognized the wisdom of it after her abrupt stop as she followed as Viola guided her off the dance floor. “I’m just so dumb, because I should have thought of that ages ago. My mum plays Quidditch, for Merlin’s sake!” She couldn’t even blame that on the alcohol because she’d been pondering the question enough to ask - Aunt Hermione had talked about doing two different jobs, and that was good and all, but that wasn’t the same. And this? This made far more sense to her.
Although she had stopped mid-dance. “Do you think maybe we could go get some water?” she asked as they reached the edge of the dance floor.

Viola’s eyebrows shot upwards when Roxy insisted, louder than was strictly necessary, that it wasn’t the whole dating issue that factored into her insistence not to step on Viola’s toes. Viola smiled a little at that, amused by Roxy’s tipsiness and sweetness alike.
The pair departed the dance floor, and Roxy continued to rave about how she couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought of the solution herself. “You’re not dumb.” Viola stated plainly. The only reason they said that was because it was the truth, and they valued the truth. It definitely wasn’t because they didn’t like the idea of Roxy talking down about herself. “Sometimes our brains can just get stuck in ruts. We need a fresh perspective.” And Viola was the necessary fresh perspective in this case.
“Yeah, you probably need it.” Viola said when Roxy asked about water. They flagged down a passing waiter and received two goblets of water, one of which they handed to Roxy. “Have you eaten?” Alcohol worse on an empty stomach, they had heard.

"I know I'm not dumb. That's why I feel so dumb, you know? Because I missed something obvious." She smiled a bit sheepishly, paused for a moment and then, quiet, "thanks."
She took the goblet from Viola and drank all the water straight down, and passed it back to the waiter. "Yeah, I ate before. I do have some experience in being giggly, you know," she said with a grin. Well, not an awful lot, but hey, she was a Gryffindor, the unnecessary bravado was part of the package.

Viola nodded when Roxy said she knew she wasn’t dumb, which was why she felt even dumber. Ah. That made sense. “We all miss things every once in a while.” They said with a shrug. Some people – like Viola – didn’t miss as much, but everyone had their blind spots. Roxy sheepishly thanked Viola, and they gave her a soft smile. “You’re welcome.” Even though they didn’t really deserve thanks for pointing out something that Roxy would have figured out on her own, eventually, Viola still felt pleasantly warm in accepting Roxy’s praise.
Viola’s eyes widened slightly when Roxy downed the entire goblet in one go, whistling beneath their breath when their shock dissipated enough to do so. “I never know who has experience or not.” Viola said. That was actually a lie, since normally they were in the corner of the Durmstrang parties, when there were parties at all. But they’d never gotten an opportunity to see Roxy in this kind of social setting before, and no matter how observant someone was, they couldn’t instantly know everything about someone with one glance, or even with several.

She shrugged and blushed at Viola's whistle. She was thirsty! Besides, drinking fast meant the lipstick only had one chance to escape. That mattered.
But she nodded as Viola said she couldn't generally tell. "Well, here's a hint - the Gryffindors are known for their parties after Quidditch matches, and Weasleys are notorious for bending the rules." She paused, and added, somewhat more hesitantly, "not that I'm the one breaking the rules, usually, or that they're necessarily that alcoholic of parties, but..." She trailed off. She had a healthy disregard for arbitrary rules, but she also had a healthy regard for her own health, and you could learn as much from other people's mistakes as making your own.
"But it's fun to be a bit giggly sometimes," she said firmly, finally. "As long as you have lots of water and good company."

Roxy blushed at Viola’s whistle, which did nothing other than make them want to whistle again. Roxy was cute when she blushed – which was not, of course, a thought that Viola would have had if it was any night other than the Yule Ball.
Viola followed Roxy’s logic about the whole Gryffindor Quidditch match parties and Weasleys breaking rules. They had snuck alcohol into Hogwarts and drank it every time they won a Quidditch game – and probably when they had lost, too. Which meant that Roxy had quite a bit of experience with alcohol. “I understand.” Viola said when Roxy said that she wasn’t into breaking big rules or getting so smashed she couldn’t remember her own name. The girl seemed only to like the pleasant buzz that came with a little bit of alcohol, and not much more than that.
“Do I count as good company?” Viola asked innocently when Roxy mentioned it was fun to be giggly sometimes. There already was plenty of water, so the good company was the only thing missing from Roxy’s equation.

Viola's question was absolutely a leading one, she was certin of it, but Roxy took the bait anyway. "Very good company," Roxy said, trying not to flush and failing.
Godric, it was warm, wasn't it? Maybe outside would be better. "Fresh air? I haven't been down to the courtyard yet." She wondered whether she should offer her arm, and then decided that that probably wouldn't be the smartest idea. She didn't exactly want to pull Viola down with her if she fell - not that she thought she would, but... just in case.

Viola tried not to flush when Roxy said that they were good company, and when their cheeks did inevitably get a little pink, Viola tried to convince themself that they were just overheated. Viola nodded at the Roxy’s suggestion to visit the courtyard, since they obviously could use a cooling down themself, and put their hand at the small of Roxy’s back. They weren’t sure where the nearest exit was, so Viola just guided the pair of them to the exit that they knew how to locate. “Are any of your family here?” Viola asked, to make conversation. They knew Roxy had a lot of relatives, and it was possible that some of the adults were Ministry members and were thus intermingling with all of the students.

Roxy was glad that Viola wanted to go out too, because that meant their hand was in the small of her back as they made their way to the exit, and that was good. She also appreciated that even if Viola had been leading, they still blushed a bit at the compliment.
Viola asked whether any of her family was there, and Roxy laughed and nodded. "Yeah, loads of them. Not my mum or dad or brother, but Anna is obviously, because she's Champion. I think Hugo said he had something else planned, but Dom and Rose will be around somewhere. Lily too. Lucy and Ondina wouldn't miss it, but -" she shrugged. It was Christmas, she would be charitable and not finish that sentence. "Uncle Harry and Aunt Hermione and I think Uncle Percy because Ministry, and then Uncle Ron and Aunt Ginny and Aunt Audrey." Was that it? Eh, close enough. She grinned. "I have a large and awesome family."

Roxy laughed when Viola asked if any of her family was there, and at first Viola wondered why, but then they got it. At least five of Roxy’s cousins were there, in addition to a handful of aunts and uncles, though none of Roxy’s immediate family members were there. Viola was still reeling a bit at all of the names, but they could grab on to the bit about having a large and awesome family. It was a good conversation starter for something about their own life, right? “I’ve only got one sibling, too.” Viola said. Pemberly was still back at Durmstrang, but it wouldn’t surprise Viola if, after this year, their dad decided to transfer Pem to Hogwarts, since their family was more or less based in England anyways. “But I haven’t got all these cousins and such.” Viola was pretty sure that their mother had had siblings, but given the state of relations on that side of the family, Viola wasn’t sure those cousins would ever be met.

"A brother or a sister? Older or younger?" Hopefully Viola liked their sibling, or this might get awkward - she knew enough people who didn't like their siblings, but Roxy loved Fred.
"Weasleys are notoriously prolific. It can be a pain at Christmas time. Too many presents to buy." Fortunately the cool air was helping clear her head, because her humour worked far better when she could get through the full thought without cracking up at her own joke. She grinned, though. Of course, she'd never really bought presents for all her cousins, and chances were she never would - it really was a lot of cousins.

Roxy asked whether their sibling was a brother or a sister, and Viola shrugged. “Pem is kind of…” They made a vague hand motion. Pemberly had never made a point of saying that they didn’t agree with their gender, but it felt wrong to label them as one or the other when there was always this sense that they might be disseminating false information. “Younger, by two years.” Viola answered. They were just close enough in age to their sibling to make them friends without being too close in age to cause arguments and such.
“That does sound like a problem.” Viola mused. They only had to buy two presents, and even that seemed like a hassle sometimes. They couldn’t imagine having more relations than there were countries in Europe – that just sounded exhausting.

Vague hand motion - oh, right, gender not a binary. Roxy pursed her lips for a second, and then decided not to inquire further. Well, about that, at least. "D'you miss them? I mean, I guess they're back at Durmstrang, right?"
She hummed agreement that it was a problem. But it was a problem she had established a handy solution to. "This is when chocolate helps. When in doubt, head to Honeydukes." So much chocolate. Maybe she should see if there was chocolate desserts around somewhere.
